National Hispanic Heritage Month is here! This is a time of the year I always look forward to as I not only get to participate of events planned to celebrate my heritage, I always get to learn something new from other cultures. This month we have included as many events in our center page calendar that were forwarded to us so that everyone in the community can take advantage of them. If you or your organization has a planned event in honor of this month and it is not included in this printed calendar, you still have time to add it to our online community calendar. Visit http://www. rochesterlavoz.com/ and click on the events tab to add yours! I also hope you enjoy the read of various local news and articles. Check
out The Six Tips for Keeping Teens Safe on Social Media (page 15). We also covered three awesome events that includes Monroe High Schools Back to School Kick-off, the Opening Act for the City of Rochesters Hispanic Heritage Month (our cover page image was created by the City of Rochesters graphic designer) and an Evangelical Crusade with pastors who came all the way from Venezuela and a renowned Christian singer from South America. Enjoy the read! Until next time! Raquel Editor

Pelotero - Ballplayer (3:00pm): This compelling documentary narrated by John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge, Ice Age, Carlito's Way) is a gritty and rare look inside Major League Baseball's (MLB) recruitment of top talent in the Dominican Republic. Miguel Angel Sano and Jean Carlos Batista are among 100,000 teenagers vying for a handful of coveted contracts with MLB teams. As they turn 16 years old and become eligible to sign, each must navigate the fiercely competitive and frequently corrupt system if they are to lift their families out of poverty and achieve their dream: to one day play in the Major Leagues. Filmmakers Ross Finkel, Trevor Martin and Jon Paley take you inside this never before seen world for an up close and personal look at the cost of the American dream.
La Clave (4:45pm): La Clave is a fascinating musical documentary film about the similarities between two types of music genres known today as Salsa and Reggaeton. In this film, we were fortunate enough to have gathered the hottest stars of Reggaeton as well as the old school greats of salsa. We have interviewed salsa icons such as Willie Colon, Ismael Miranda, Gilberto SantaRosa, and on the Reggaeton side we interviewed billboard chart topping artists such as Julio Voltio, Tego Calderon, Hector El Father just to name a few.
America (6:30pm): While the setting of her Caribbean beach village seems picture-perfect, America's life is anything but peaceful. When their daughter runs away, America's abusive lover unleashes his rage against her. Leaving everything behind, America escapes to New York City hoping for a new life. There she works as a nanny for a wealthy family and at night in a laundry. She befriends three nannies -a Mexican, a Colombian and a Dominican- and with their help and support from relatives in the Bronx, America is determined to bring her daughter back to her. But her past haunts her. America must confront her terror to protect her dream .

Guest ministers from Venezuela came to Rochester, New York as spiritual ambassadors for two weeks. Pastor John Jimenez and his wife Pastor Maria Jimenez from Ministerio Internacional Jesus Rey de Reyes (one of the fastest growing churches in Venezuela) were invited to our city by Rev. David Valle from River Citychurch. Psalmist Kerwin Marquez who is recognized in South America for his presentations in Enlace (a Spanish TBN Christian network) delighted and lifted souls with his powerful voice. They brought teachings, workshops, preaching, encouragement, healing and time of prayer to many local Latino and African-American pastors. Bilingual services also took place at HOPAR (House of Prayer and Restoration). Pastors and church parishioners from the evangelical movement are more united than ever to stand up against strongholds that are affecting our city such as violence, suicide, homicide and poverty.

disengaged, uninformed citizenry that mostly dont vote or vote blindly. At its most basic level, democracy is about choice. The public square that choice creates, in turn, insures diversity and brings accountability to those who represent us. When the two majority opposing political parties concede their respective strongholds to one another for years not challenging each other -- even the most engaged citizen feels powerless over impacting the results. With approximately six weeks to go in such an important event for any city, already our community is abuzz, and very much convinced, of what the result will beand the citizens are short-changed one more time. We can only hope that in the midst of such a truncated political process that the eventual winner will be a capable, caring, leader who will primarily remember to be a servant leader to the people she (or he) represents.

Honoring Grandparents
In 1978, President Jimmy Cater proclaimed the first Grandparents Day to be celebrated the first Sunday after Labor Day. Marian McQuade, a housewife IDA PEREZ from West V i r g i n i a originated the day with the hopes to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. What an ingenious way to honor those that help mold our communities and who provide us with love and understanding. the very end. Although my two grandmothers were very different in many ways; they both were strong and determined women. They knew when to give advice and always gave it with this great sense of humor. They both knew how to cure a belly ache or neck cramp with herbs and rubs. And they both would kill a chicken in a second and slaughtering a pig for a roast was an everyday task. They both outlived their husbands, yet they faced each challenge courageously and learned to adapt to the new times. My mother who was grandmother of 19 grandchildren and over 23 greatgrandchildren is remembered by her kind and thoughtful acts. She always remembered her grandchildrens birthdays and made it a point to give them a small token of love. She too was known for her good cooking and wealth of advice. She had a name of endearment for all her grandchildren which made each of them feel super special. and memories will I be leaving my granddaughter. Unfortunately, Tashy loss her paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather within the last 3 years. Therefore; its really up to me to provide her with the great experiences and fond memories she should have from her grandparents. Although Tashy is only six years old, she and I often have long conversations on topics that interest her. I am her cuddling buddy while watching her favorite TV shows; we enjoy cooking, dancing and playing together. Sometimes she even enjoys going to a meeting with me. Tashy has seen me work long hours at my job, as well as labor intense cleaning and repairing in the house we just moved in to. She has seen me wipe a tear and put on a smile and she has seen me fall and get back up. It is my hope that she sees in me the same qualities I saw in my grandparents; strength, determination and courage. So if you didnt know about the National Grandparent Day, it is not late to pay your grandparent a visit. If you are a grandparent, its still not late to start creating those fond memories
with your grandchildren. Remember, you are your childs first teacher and best advocate. Future Grandparents Day (In United States, Grandparents Day is always the first Sunday in September after Labor Day): September 7th, 2014 September 6th, 2015 September 11th, 2016
I had the privilege to meet and even live with my maternal grandparents in Puerto Rico during my youth. Although they barely left the house and never watched TV, they were prime examples of true love and commitment. Their daily rituals and faith in God helped Grandparents Day (September 8th, them take good care of each other until 2013) makes me think of what legacy

hispanic heritage kick off Monroe Highschool 2013 back to school kick off
Monroe High School Back to School Kick Off was a success! Kids started to get ready and motivated for the new school year. They were provided with school supplies, haircuts, music, and food among other things. Parents and students got to meet the principal, teachers, staff and other students. There were also many organizations, including La Voz with information about their different services to the community. Members of the City of Rochester Hispanic Heritage Committee Monday hosted a ceremony at City Hall kicking-off the celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month in Rochester. Students from Joseph C. Wilson Foundation Academy unfolded 23 national flags of Latin America from the mezzanines overlooking the Atrium. As each flag was unfurled, an important and historic fact of each country was mentioned. Honorable Mayor Thomas Richards and City Councilmember Jacklyn Ortiz read a proclamation.
