Architectural paint is being dumped into India from U.S. The import price is as low as Rs. 18 per litre. Petroleum order 2000 plans to bring solvents (such as xylene. toulence, CIX and white spirit)used in manufacturing which leads to production becoming costly. NRIs interest on real estate in India is also aggressively acting, to construct houses. shopping complex. Domestic producers are targeting private construction companies to increase the volume of their products (Viz. paint. construction materials) so as to face competition created out of dumping from foreign companies. Attempt to export Indian construction materials and paint to other developing nations (third world countries) has become slow. Since the establishment of HDFC in India opl1ons for house properly increased but recently. due to high margin quoted by contractors customers feel difficulty in cutting the costs. Obviously they prefer to opt for imported materials having low costs. especially in metropolitan areas. Producers of paint in India have opted to concentrate on rural markets taluk head quarters by opening more retail and wholesale shops to increase their volume. Some producers have also attempted to strategies like the cost management to face the new situation. Parallely they are offering incentives to wholesalers and stockists to invest and aggressively increase their volume of sales, (especially in economy paint sector). Vdine MIS and MDSS ? Compare and contrast between marketing information system and MDSS. (10 Marks) Case: Northwest Marketers

8.

Tom, a recent MBAgraduate, was contemplating starting an export business. He had noted that there were a large number of small and medium - sized speciality food producers, in Pacific North West. These small firms took advantage of the region's high quality, fruit. nuts, vegetables, spices, and fish to produce high quality and for unusual foods. Most firms sold locally and direct mail as well. None of the firms thought of expansion if demand developed. Tom had few hundred dollars in the bank and a job that covered his living expenses. He was convinced that. there would be a stgniflcant market for these special food products in Japan and perhaps in Taiwan and Europe as well. He hoped to buy the products from the local producers under his own labe. He would then export them as premium - priced gift items. Tom formed a firm, Northwest Marketers, and began to consider ways to make his dream a reality. Telephone contacts with a number of local producers convinced him that he could obtain a significant supply of the various items. His next step before seeking the funding needed to launch the venture was to determine if there would actually be a demand for his products and what types of distribution might be possible unfortunately he had no source of funds at this time other than his rather meagre savings.

Question~ :i)

What is Tom's management problem? His research problem? ii) Sp .ctfyprecisely the information Tom requires. Hi) How'should Tom collect the needed dat.a ? Be detailed and precise. Iv) What errors would you be concerned with, in the data you have suggested he collect? (20 Marks)
