Summery The above-mentioned vessel was attended in Nagoya, Japan and sailing to Mokpo, Korea from 2013-07-23 to 2013-07-29 to follow up on the condition of engine and low load operation with slow steaming nozzles. The piston under side on all cylinders was inspected at Nagoya port. Inspection of exhaust gas manifold and slow steam nozzles were replaced with reconditioned ones at Osaka, Japan. For further comparison on the engine condition as discussed with owners superintendent, general parameter of the engine at 82, 90 and 100 rpm were taken during sea passage from Nagoya to Osaka, Japan. After sailing from Osaka to Mokpo, Korea, engine condition at 79, 90, 100.5 rpm was rechecked. Based on pictures and inspection taken and made before and after the test, it could be stated that the way of operating the engine showed promising conditions as the cylinder condition was generally fine and gas ways were clean. This was the picture before as well as after the test, no significant changes were observed.

Background Vessel is planning to operate low load operation about 3 weeks and 2 weeks with normal operation due to economic situation of fuel oil consumption. In order to evaluate engine condition and possibility of turbo charger re-matching after exchange of slow steaming nozzles, our service engineer has been attended. Inspection of scavenging air port at Nagoya and exhaust gas manifold at Osaka Inspections for piston under side and scavenging air receiver showed normal oily deposit condition and carbon building up on the top land of the pistons. Ring land of the piston was deposited carbons. The surface of piston ring was showing sharp edge on top and bottom. Air cooler outlet was observed dry condition. Inspection cover for exhaust gas was opened up. A thin layer of dry soot was observed on whole surface. The general picture is quite satisfactory. The condition of piston running and oily deposits on scavenging air port should be monitored at regular base for further safety operation in case low load running. It was recommended to follow the situation by scavenge port inspections until the situation has improved and then return to the normal recommended lubrication pattern. Oily coating without carbon deposits on piston ring land was proper operation and feeding of cylinder oil. Therefore, motoring of inspection interval for piston running condition should be reduced in case low load operation. Comparison of scavenging air port, exhaust gas manifold and turbo charger Inspection of scavenge air receiver after the test and after arrival to Mokpo, Korea showed these pictures. Based on the previous picture, the condition is more or less the same. The groove clearances on all pistons were measured. Cylinder#1 & #4 were oversized max. limit (0.8 mm / normal: 0.35 ~ 0.40mm) as followings. Unit: mm #1 Ring groove clearance on top ring Over 1.0mm #2 0.50 #3 0.40 #4 0.80 #5 0.38 #6 0.50 #7 0.50

Engine performance from Nagoya to Osaka / Osaka to Mokpo, Korea The engine parameter at 82, 90 and 100 rpm was taken for comparison after exchange of slow steaming nozzles at next port, Osaka, Japan. Shop test at 50% (97.6rpm, 5708 kW), 75% (113.7 rpm, 8834kW), 90% (118.2 rpm, 10047kW) and 100% (123.9 rpm, 11509kW) had been recorded. Vessel had found sea trial report with 100% load only. The fuel index on cylinder #7 was higher than other cylinder. It might be worn out plunger and barrel. Slow steaming nozzles were replaced with reconditioned ones at Osaka, Japan. After that, engine condition at 79, 90, 100.5 rpm was rechecked. The Pmax, Pcomp and other temperature level seems similar condition. The fuel oil consumption before and after was noticed as shown below.

For details of engine parameter, please see attached sheet. Service parameters to be considered when operating the engine on low load Aux Blowers To protect the auxiliary blower motors, it is important that they are not cutting in and out during this low load service. Stop pressure for auxiliary blower has been set as 0.72bar and continue running till 100 rpm. If rpm is increased over 102, blower has been stopped. The current for the blower motor should be checked not to be above the value given on the sign for the motor. It is a general recommendation to carry a complete spare blower on board the vessel if low load operation is employed for long periods. Cold corrosion In order to protect the cylinder against cold corrosion cooling water outlet temperature, we would suggest increasing between 80 to 85 C Fouling of turbo charger turbine and nozzle ring General intervals for cleaning of turbo charger should be followed according to makers instruction. Regular inspection from peep hole cover will be required. Economizer With installed type of economizer of the smoke tube type, the risk for serious fouling is limited a boiler type normally is designed to give a relatively high velocity of the gasses and at normal load is considered as self cleaning. However, water tube economizer are designed on base of relatively low velocity of the gas are more exposed for fouling and consequential fires.

Conclusions Regarding the low load operation with slow steaming nozzles, general comments from MAN service letter SL85-205 should be carefully followed. No running above 75% of normal MCR output will be required except during manoeuvring period. No special precaution can be obtained at least down to approx. 30% of normal MCR output. However, continuous running for more than one or two day below 20% should be avoided. Based on investigations for engine condition at low load with slow steaming nozzles at short term operation, reduction of slight oil consumption was noticed and no any special precautions with turbo charger re-matching will be required. Regular inspection from turbo charger turbine side, scavenging air port, exhaust gas manifold will be necessary for further engine operation and evaluation. Due to oversize of ring groove clearances on top ring, piston crown #1 & #4 should be replaced with new or reconditioned ones as soon as possible. For correct calculation of the engine power, we would recommend supplying planimeter.
