Meditation

MATTER FOR MEDITATION Look to the matter for meditation. Let it be some truth which will assist you in reviving some languishing grace, or fortify you against some triumphing corruption; for it is the most darling sin which most envenoms our thoughts. As if you have a thirst for honor, let you fancy represent the honor of being a child of God and heir of heaven. If you are inclined to covetousness, think in the riches stored up in the Saviour, and dispensed by him. If to voluptuousness, fancy the pleasure in the ways of wisdom here, and at Gods right hand hereafter. This is to deal with our hearts as Paul with his hearers, to catch them with guile. Stake your soul down to some serious and profitable mystery of religion; as the majesty of God; some particular attribute, his condescension in Christ, the love of our Redeemer, the value of his sufferings, the virtue of his blood, the end of his ascension. the work of the Spirit, the Excellency of the soul, beauty of holiness, certainty of death, terror of judgment, torments of hell, and the joys of heaven. Why may not that which was the subject of Gods innumerable thoughts be the subjects of ours? Gods thoughts and counsels were concerning Christ, the end of his coming, his death, his precepts of holiness and promise of life; and that not only speculatively, but with an infinite pleasure in his own glory, and to the creatures good to be accomplished by him. Would it not be work enough for our tights all the day to travel over the length, breadth, height, and depth of the love of Christ? Would the greatness of the journey give us any leisure to make any starts out of the way? Having settled the theme for all the day, we shall find occasional assistances, even from worldly business; as scholars who have some exercises to make, find helps in their own course of reading, though the book has no designed respect to their proper theme. Thus by employing our minds about the one thing chiefly, we shall not only hinder them from vain excursions, but make even common objects to be oil for our good thoughts, which otherwise would have been fuel for our bad.. Such generous liquor would scent our minds and conversations all the day that whatsoever motions came into our hearts would be tinctured with this spirit, and savoir for our morning thoughts; as vessels having been filled with rich wine, communicate a relish of it to the liquors afterwards put into them. We might also more steadily go about our worldly business, if we carry God in our minds; as one foot of the compass will more regularly move about the circumference, when the other remains firm in the center. Congregational Life
Today, Pastor David Murray will preach for us. Next Sunday, Ian Macleod will conduct the worship services, the Lord willing. The Sunday School classes (beginners 7th Grade) Psalter of the month is #44. Please review with your children. From the Deacons: The Free Reformed Christian Education letter and form are due today for those requesting assistance for this school year. The form will need to be filled out completely and returned to a deacon. From the Deacons: There will be a collection for the denominational Seminary Instructor Fund on October 6. There is an increased need to support the fund at this time. At its September 10 meeting the consistory was at liberty to accept Confex & Mwai Makhalira as Associate Members of our congregation. They come to us from their church in Malawi as Confex studies at PRTS. Please take the opportunity this morning to welcome them. We pray that God would bless their time with us and continue to make them a blessing. The Confession of Faith/New Members Class will meet in the fellowship hall downstairs for an introductory meeting after the morning service. All who have finished catechism classes and have given any thought to the class are urged to come and find out more. Adult Sunday class will start this morning after the service. For the first few months, Pastor Murray will lead a study of the book "The Peace Maker" by Ken Sande. This morning we will be studying chapter 1. We encourage all adults to attend as able. The books are available in the narthex on the book table at no charge.

October 1 - (Tuesday) 7 PM Dorcas Guild meeting. Our project for this month is hygiene kits for international aid. Items needed are: 12-16oz bottle of shampoo, 3-6.4 oz. bar of soap, washcloths, comb 4 - 6 oz. tube of toothpaste, 6 inch toothbrush (individually wrapped) 2 - 6 oz. hand sanitizer and 2.5 - 3.5 oz. "stick" deodorant (no spray). October 5 (Saturday) 7 AM Mens Breakfast Bible Study will have their first meeting of the season at Russ in Grandville. All men of the congregation are encouraged to join us.

Speakers for this evening are Mr. Riko Viviers; mission worker from Yakutia, Siberia and Mr. Cees Brouwer; project manager. Speaker Evening: You are invited to a Speaker Evening, hosted by the FRC Sunday School Association on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 8:00 PM in the St. George FRC. Rev. Timothy Bergsma plans to speak on the topic "The Learning Teacher." Everyone is welcome to attend this annual event, especially parents and teachers.
