ADVANTAGES 1.

Can train students to apply it in their daily life Such as asking directions, ordering dishes at restaurants, buying airline tickets or chatting on the Internet. 2. Can train students to ask directions, order dishes at restaurants in English by themselves. Students can practice what they learnt in the classroom and try to practice it in reality. Students will more understand real situation in life. Examples of activities are paired practice", "group work", "problem-solving and information-gap activities", "role-playing and dramatization". "Playing games" "singing songs" and so on. If those activities can be really exercised in classrooms, students surely will like learning English. 4. This approach is student-centred. The students involve in all the activities held in the class actively and their learning will be meaningful. They can easily remember what they have learnt and try to apply it in real life.

3. The activities in this approach mostly are fun and involve the participation of the students

5. Experiential learning is more powerful than instructions Rather than a teacher just giving instructions and input directly to the students, the teacher might just giving hands-on activities that require the students themselves to do all the activities so that they can explore. In other words, this approach encourages participants to discover outcomes rather than being told answers. 6. Promoting learning This returns us to the consideration of who we are teaching, and why. Are our students aiming to learn or acquire English? According to Richards and Rodgers (1986), they said that communicative approach is basically about promoting learning. After all, if the students master the language, they will get good grades in exams if that is their goal. While to those who do see beyond classroom-related English will be better in using the language socially. 7. The interaction between students and teachers Teacher-student relationship is an interactive and harmonious rather than the traditional education which is more like master-servant relationship.

Criticism The communicative approach focuses on the use of language in everyday situations, or the functional aspects of language, and less on the formal structures. There must be a certain balance between the two. It gives priority to meanings and rules of use rather than to grammar and rules of structure. Such concentration on language behaviour may result in negative consequences in the sense that important structures and rules would be left out.
