AF Focus Checking Instructions for using the AF Fine Tuning Focus Chart
1. 2. 3. 4. Lay the focus chart on a flat surface stable surface Make sure the chart is evenly lit with no shadows or glare Mount the camera on a tripod Position the camera at a 45 degree angle to the focus chart

45 degrees to the chart Focus Chart 5. Remove the Lens Shade 6. Pop up the in-camera flash > Custom setting e3 > set to TTL. Or mount a speedlight on the camera and select TTL flash mode. 7. Set the Camera Flash Sync mode to Normal Sync with a Flash Power Compensation setting of -1.0 8. Select Flash White Balance 9. Exposure Mode - Aperture Priority 10. Press the Menu button > Shooting Menu > select Set Picture Control > select Neutral > set sharpening level to 0 > OK 11. Select Auto Focus - AF-S 12. Select Auto Focus Area Mode Single 13. Select the widest possible Aperture Setting available on the lens (f/2.8, f/4) 14. Shutter Speed in Normal Sync mode will be 1/60 second 15. If the lens has VR (vibration reduction) feature > turn off 16. Position the camera and zoom the lens so that the Focus Chart fills the viewfinder 17. Position the Priority Sensor in the center position and lock the focus selection ring 18. Adjust the camera position so that the Priority Sensor is placed of the FOCUS HERE portion of the focus chart

19. Half depress the shutter release button > check the focus indicator dot in the lower left hand corner of the viewfinder. If the indicator dot is solid. Fully depress the shutter release button to capture an image. If you have a ten-pin shutter release cable use the cable to fire the shutter and reduce vibration Note: Reducing vibration is critical to capturing an in-focus image. Any vibration could cause the image to appear to be out of focus. You cannot effectively hand hold the camera to check the focus. 20. Repeat steps 18 & 19 to take a second image 21. View images on the computer screen to select the image that is in focus.
