Survey research is the most commonly recognized and utilized social science research methodology for studying large

populations worldwide. The purpose of the Survey Research Methods online certificate program is to provide participants with basic knowledge and skills in scientifically-grounded survey research methodologies. Completion of this program will enhance employment opportunities for expanding professions that demand evidence-based research regarding social issues and conditions.

The Survey Research Methods online certificate program is designed to provide you with:

Who Should Apply? The Survey Research Methods online certificate program is ideal for individuals who routinely produce, analyze or utilize survey data. Individuals who work in government, nonprofit and research organizations will benefit from this program. Upon completion of the Survey Research Methods program, participants will know how to:

Best meet the goals of the survey project Design a survey that minimizes error to reduce costs Make effective decisions regarding mode of delivery, target population, incentives, advance letters, number of contacts, and use of refusal conversions Construct a representative sample based on a target population Translate research questions or project goals into a survey instrument following current best practices of question writing and questionnaire design Develop procedures for data survey collection, including sample management, interviewer training, survey administration, quality control standards and creation of recruitment materials Critically evaluate the methodology used in a survey and assess the potential sources of error in a survey design Conduct basic analysis of survey data using correct analysis procedures Interpret analysis outcomes and decisions using survey data Comprehend statistical procedures used to process and analyze survey data.

PA 575 - Survey Planning and Management This course focuses on the practical aspects of planning a survey and managing survey data collection. This course will also lead students through the steps of planning and conducting a survey, including: linking survey goals or research questions to survey design; sampling; sample management: and basic descriptive analysis of survey data. Field work required. Prerequisite(s): Consent of the instructor.

PA 576 - Applied Survey Sampling This course provides an introduction to sampling from an applied social science perspective. It includes a discussion of basic decisions to be made when designing and drawing a sample. This course will also give students a basic understanding of sampling and the skills to develop a sampling strategy that focuses broadly on social science applications. Emphasis will be placed on practical application of sampling methods and procedures to applied research problems. Prerequisite(s): Consent of the instructor. PA 582 - Survey Data Collection Methods This course focuses on examining the impact of survey data collection techniques on data quality and survey costs. The course involves learning about and discussing the major data collection methods used in surveys (e.g., face-to-face interviewing, telephone survey and mail questionnaires); new advances in data collection, including computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) and computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI); and the role of interviewers and their impact on survey data. Prerequisite(s): Graduate or professional standing or consent of the instructor. PA 588 - Survey Data Reduction and Analysis This course provides an overview of current methods and issues in regards to the theory and logic of data editing, imputation, weighting and special considerations in the analysis and reporting of data from complex sample surveys. This course provides an in-depth overview of available procedures and standards for survey data reduction and data analysis activities. Prerequisite(s): Admission to the MPA or PhD in Public Administration program or consent of the instructor. CHSC 577/PA 577- Survey Questionnaire Design This course provides in-depth training and experience in survey questionnaire design. The course trains students to develop and assess survey questions to measure key groups of variables for surveys involving different modes of data collection. It also teaches students how to understand the effects of question formatting, wording, coding and ordering on responses and data quality. Students develop and present questionnaires related to their individual interests. Prerequisite(s): CHSC 446 (or equivalent) or CHSC 447/PA 447 (or equivalent) or consent of the instructor.

The workshop is highly interactive and includes a mix of discussions, group activities and scenarios to help work you through the procurement process
