The new scalable and compliant chromatography software platform with multi-instrument control
OpenLAB CDS EZChrom Edition is part of the new Agilent software suite OpenLAB for the analytical laboratory and enterprise. The connectivity to the Enterprise Content Management data base system, for instance, opens new possibilities for easy and fast archiving, retrieving and searching chromatography data. The multi-instrument control capabilities, scalability and compliance of OpenLAB CDS EZChrom Edition are ideal to fulfill the requirements of todays chromatography laboratories and to optimize their efficiency. Central administration functions have been arranged in the OpenLAB Shared Services/ Control Panel module while keeping the existing user interface and workflows for the EZChrom chromatography data system. Many exciting new functions are now made available as e.g. the Result Package mode, the Result Review/ Result Sequence mode and the new Intelligent Reporting mode.

OpenLAB Concept
The new version of the EZChrom Elite Chromatography Data System (CDS) has now been integrated into Agilents OpenLAB software suite. OpenLAB enables the combination and connectivity of different software modules important for analytical laboratories and enterprises, e.g. the combination of the CDS, an Electronic Notebook (ELN) and/or a comprehensive data base module: the Enterprise Content Manager (ECM). Thus, the combination of OpenLAB CDS and ECM enables the direct storage and archiving of chromatography methods, data, results and reports in the ECM data base and vice versa: using the CDS these data can be directly retrieved from the ECM data base. OpenLAB CDS is the new Agilent software platform for both EZChrom Elite and ChemStation Chromatography data Systems. It provides a common navigation layer (Shared Services/Control Panel) while maintaining the instrument control and CDS user interface familiar to the analysts.

OpenLAB Shared Services

This software module is a key element of the OpenLAB software portfolio that enables sharing of functionality and integration of applications between different OpenLAB software modules and provides the necessary administrative functions as: Instrument management Project management User/Groups/Roles management (Roles is a new function: a Role is a set of user rights) Network communication infrastructure (communication in a networked system) Diagnostics infrastructure (software diagnostics and tracing) License management Depending on the complexity of the installed CDS the Shared Services module is installed on different computers. For workstations the Shared Services module is installed on the same computer as the CDS. For networked systems or client/server systems the Shared Services module is installed on a remote server connected to the network.

Scalability
The OpenLAB CDS EZChrom Edition Software is uniquely designed to fit the needs of every chromatography laboratory, from a single user controlling a single instrument all the way to a multi-user, multi-site enterprise with hundreds of instruments. It can also easily be connected to OpenLAB ECM for permanent data storage in a secure data repository with web based access. Following deployments are possible in order to optimize the laboratorys efficiency: As stand-alone workstation with 1 to 4 LC or GC chromatography systems connected As networked system (several computers connected by network with central data storage) As Client/Server system As Client/Server system/Enterprise System connected to the OpenLAB ECM data base

Configurable Compliance
According to the regulatory requirements of the customer the compliance of Open LAB CDS EE software is configurable. For meeting the needs of GxP and FDA 21 CFR Part 11 (guidelines for storing and protecting electronic records and applying electronic signatures) OpenLAB CDS EZChrom Edition software was designed to provide a full feature set to help companies using chromatography instruments comply with this ruling.

Multi Instrument Control

OpenLAB CDS EZChrom Edition supports instrument control and digital data acquisition from a vast number of chromatography systems from leading LC, GC and related hardware manufacturers around the world, including the Hitachi LC systems. This portfolio of instrument control, unsurpassed in the industry, provides a single platform to control all of the instruments in your lab, eliminating the need for costly deployment of multiple software packages from different vendors. Over 330 different chromatographic components from more than 25 vendors are supported, with new instrument control packages announced routinely as they are developed and released. As laboratories change with the purchase of new or additional instrumentation, the appropriate instrument control add-on can be quickly and easily installed onto the existing OpenLAB CDS EZChrom Edition deployment.

New functions in OpenLAB CDS EZChrom Edition

Many new functions and improvements have been incorporated in this new version of EZChrom Elite. The most prominent novelties are:

-> New: Intelligent Reporting

The OpenLAB CDS intelligent reporting engine brings the power of a new modern reporting tool to the chromatography analyst. The new reporting tool can easily insert graphics and tabular data according to your requirements, and enables your own custom calculations. Tables of results can easily be shown with summary statistics of results from a single injection or an entire sequence.

-> New: Result Package Mode

Alternatively, OpenLAB CDS EZChrom Edition can be operated in the hitherto existing File Mode or in the new Result Package Mode. In the Result Package Mode a unique folder is created for every sequence run. All relevant data, result sequences , the actual method and report template files are stored together in this package. The original master method is still stored in and accessible from the Method folder.

-> New: Result Review Mode

As an effect of running an acquisition sequence , the system creates a Result Sequence file. The Result Sequence is a line by line record of the data acquisitions that have already been performed and reprocessed. Chromatograms and results for each sample are immediately available without the need for reprocessing.

-> New: More Templates

Any file may now be made available as a template. This includes methods, sequences, sample preparation procedures and the different report options (standard, intelligent, advanced report).

-> New: PDF Printing

The user can now select to create reports in pdf format for printing and storage.

Licensing
Licensing of OpenLab CDS EZChrom Edition software is performed via a new 3rd-party internet platform subscribenet. Using this platform the customer or the software support service can administer the respective pool of software licenses. New licenses can be added and a license code for the complete software system can be generated. It is even possible to return licenses which are not in use and to activate them again at a later date (e.g. when a computer has to be changed).

Software Maintenance Agreement

For EZChrom Elite installations for which a Software Maintenance Agreement (SMA) has been closed the upgrade to OpenLAB CDS EZChrom Edition is part of the SMA entitlement. The SMA concluded with VWR entitles for: Free upgrades and maintenance releases of current software releases Priority support For operational problems and change management, VWR supplies technical software support by software specialists via phone, e-mail, fax or web-based remote access. This includes problem definition, problem analysis and troubleshooting support as well as the provision of status reports and the maintenance of a request database.

Upgrade from EZChrom Elite

EZChrom Elite version 3.3.2 SP2 can be upgraded to OpenLAB CDS EZChrom Edition. After installation of the update all former configurations of EZChrom Elite are migrated to OpenLAB CDS EZChrom Edition using a migration tool included in the upgrade.
