Health Care Reform: Kaiser Permanentes Perspective

The primary purpose of the Affordable Care Act is to provide more affordable coverage, ensure better access to care and improve the quality of care. Kaiser Permanente has long advocated for more access, efficiency, and better, more coordinated care in the nations health care system. We have been working to provide affordable health care to our members for 65 years.

Health Care Reform: Kaiser Permanentes Perspective

We strongly support health care reform and the development of the health insurance exchanges, because it creates a marketplace where millions of low- and middle-income individuals and small business owners will be able to buy affordable health coverage, some for the very first time.

Transforming Care Delivery through Quality, Innovation, and Service

Kaiser Permanentes focus on quality and prevention is keeping people healthier; often preventing illnesses and disease from occurring in the first place. This is saving and improving lives, resulting in shorter and less frequent hospital stays. Our frontline teams have introduced quality improvement efforts throughout Kaiser Permanente hospitals, and we maintain the highest commitment to providing the best service experience in health care for our members and patients. When patients do become sick enough to require hospitalizations, our high-functioning care teams are at the ready, providing the best care, in a positive, healing environment.

Right Care, at the Right Time, in the Right Place

Our members are reaping the benefits of the Kaiser Permanente system, which provides them with personalized, high-quality, affordable care where and when they prefer. A shift in care delivery from the hospital to less-traditional settings when appropriate and convenient (to our outpatient clinics, via phone, telemedicine, and through physician visits online, for example) is good news for our members and patients.

Many reasons to build

To comply with Senate Bill 1953 which requires a new, higher level of seismic safety for all hospitals in California To invest in the community where we have our roots and build a new medical center in Oakland, the site of Kaiser Permanentes flagship hospital To benefit from having a new, state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly, energy efficient medical center To make changes at the same time that health care reform is taking place To provide us an opportunity to build a hospital that acknowledges changes in health care delivery, e.g., all private rooms, advanced technology
