EAST JORDAN What a dif-
ference a year makes.
The East Jordan Red Devils got
the 2013 football season kicked
off in a positive note as they
rolled to an opening night
shutout of the Traverse City
Christian Sabers 55-0 in front of
a good size crowd at Boswell sta-
dium.
The Red Devils struggled to a 0-
9 record last season, got things
rolling early and often.
Things are going to change,
starting tonight, East Jordan
coach Allan Peterson said prior
to the contest. This group has
worked so hard and are deter-
mined to show it.
It didnt take long, as senior
halfback Noah Bacchus took the
Red Devils third play from scrim-
mage 37 yards up the home side-
line to pay-dirt, giving EJ a quick
6-0 lead with 11:04 remaining in
the first quarter. The point after
attempt was no good.
Following a deep kickoff, TC
Christian found themselves
buried deep in their own terri-
tory pinned at the TC 11-yard
line.
After two fumbles (both recov-
ered by the Sabers) TC Christian
running back Carson Camp was
tackled by a host of Red Devils in
the End Zone for a safety, giving
EJ a 8-0 lead.
The ensuing free kick by the
Sabers fell into the willing and
capable hands of Bacchus once
again at the EJ 46, the deter-
mined senior once again, found a
gap and turned on the jets and it
was a footrace to the goal line
that he just wasnt going to lose
as he bolted 54 yards for another
Red Devil score at the 9:05 mark
of the opening quarter. Dustin
Hejka would tack on the extra
point attempt as he split the up-
rights for a 15-0 lead.
East Jordan would add two
more scores over the remaining
nine minutes of the first as sen-
ior Tim Schut and junior Bailey
Sargent both would scramble
through open holes created by
the offensive line and cross the
goal line for touchdowns.
Michael Suess would add a con-
version run on the score by Sar-
gent for a 29-0 cushion as they
headed towards the second quar-
ter.
The second quarter would
open with both teams going four-
and-out on their first possession,
then EJ would march 27 yards on
seven plays capped by a Jordan
Peterson 1-yard run for a 35-0
lead with just under four min-
utes remaining in the half. The
point after attempt was no good
and the score would remain the
same as the teams headed into
the break.
The second half started much
like the previous possessions for
the Red Devils as Bacchus would
race 30 yards for another touch-
down and a following a Hejka
extra point, the score showed 42-
0.
Dallas Downing and Ben Wal-
ton would add rushing touch-
downs in the fourth quarter,
along with another Hejka extra
point, for the final tally and a 55-0
Red Devil victory.
Offensively for East Jordan,
Bacchus led the way with 69
yards on three carries; Sargent,
Schut, and Walton would add sig-
nificant yardage as well as the
Red Devils piled up 220 yards on
the ground.
On the defensive side of the
ball, Schut led the way with eight
tackles, Walton and Sargent
added six apiece, while Oscar
Scheier chipped in with five.
East Jordan would force seven
fumbles in the contest, recover-
ing three as the defense held TC
Christian to -92 yards total of-
fense.
The Red Devils will now take
their 1-0 record along with that
early season momentum and
turn their attention to Hillman
as they play host to the Tigers on
Friday, September 6.

Gaylord St. Mary, 25-21, 25-11; and
against Cheboygan in the finals,
the Ramblers downed the Chiefs,
25-15, 26-24 to earn the trophy.
It was a long day, Rambler
coach Casie Parker said. We
played 16 games (8 matches) and
we were able to come out on top.
Everyone on the team con-
tributed in the win.
Heather Nichols finished with
128 assists from her setter posi-
tion, while also adding 14 aces.
Kylie Hicks added 64 kills and 14
blocks, while Paige Hornbeck
chipped in with 50 digs, 27 kills
and 12 aces.
Heather (Nichols) our setter,
set close to 400 balls today,
Parker said. In the finals, we
went to Kylie (Hicks) a lot. She
ended up having 28 kills in four
games.
Paige Hornbeck had an all-
around good day passing, serving
and hitting well, Parker said.
Cheboygan is a tough team. De-
fensively they picked up a lot of
hits. In the second game we could
not get anything by them and
went down by eight points before
catching up to them at 21. We
played consistent and smart all
day.
Also for the Boyne, Erin Baker
added 80 digs and Courtney Wel-
don had 48 digs and 10 aces, while
Mallory Karasewski chipped in
with 26 kills, and Kristen
Rushlow served at 100 percent.

LELAND The Lady Rayder
volleyball team advanced to the
semi-finals of the Leland Volley-
ball Invitational on August 29, be-
fore falling to the always tough
Traverse City St. Francis squad.
Charlevoix defeated Glen Lake
25-13, 25-18 to begin pool play; got
past Benzie Central 25-14, 25-21;
then fell to Leland 25-15, 25-15 to
finish second in their pool.
In bracket play, the Rayders de-
feated Frankfort 25-21, 26-24 be-
hind some solid net play.
In the semi-finals versus TCSF,
the Rayders fell 25-15, 25-15.
Madeline Boss led the Rayders
with 57 kills on the day, while
also finishing at 92 percent serv-
ing and posted an 85 percent
serve receive.
Also for Charlevoix, Jennaca
Holecheck had 16 kills and Madi
Carey added 11 kills, while Gloria
Greene and Olivia Storm fin-
ished with 42 assists each. Yogi
Hang had seven aces and was 24-
of-25 at the serving line and
added 15 digs.
Kelsey Pischner is ready step
up in any area, today she had 6
aces, and was 27-of-28 at the serv-
ing line, Rayder coach Audra
Randall said. Emily Zabowa
and Gloria (Greene) are working
on their blocking skill and did
very well today.
The Rayders next match is at
the Glen Lake Tournament on
September 7th.
Ramblers tested in
tough Cadillac tourney
CADILLAC The Ramblers
took on the task of playing some
tough competition and thats just
what they ran into at the Cadillac
Tournament on August 29.
Boyne came away with a few
wins, but earned more experi-
ence against some tough foes.
In pool play the Ramblers fell
to Coopersville 25-17, 24-26, 14-16;
lost to Cadillac 15-25, 25-22, 9-15;
and defeated Big Rapids 25-22, 25-
18.
In bracket play Boyne downed
Chippewa Hills 25-19, 25-11, be-
fore falling to Roscommon 18-25,
25-27.
This was a tough tournament,
there were no weak teams here,
Rambler coach Casie Parker said.
We played well all day, but not
our best and when you play
teams like this, you have to be on
top of your game.
Leading the Ramblers was
Kylie Hicks with 48 digs, 55 kills
and nine blocks; Paige Hornbeck
added 49 digs and 21 kills and
served at 100 percent on the day.
Also for Boyne, Heather
Nichols finished with 97 assists;
Erin Baker had 60 digs and seven
aces; and Mallory Karasewski
added 17 kills.
Our highlight of the day was
going three games with Cadil-
lac, Parker noted. Cadillac has
always had a strong program and
is ranked in the top 10 class B
every year.
Coach Parker also noted that
Erin Baker and Kylie Hicks stood
out the most for the Ramblers,
Erin with her digs and Kylie hit-
ting.

Charlevoix 20, St.
ignace 0
ST. IGNACE After a
back and forth first half,
Charlevoix kept plugging
away and eventually
reeled off 20 unanswered
second half points, lifting
the Rayders to 20-0 vic-
tory over St. Ignace in
coach Ron Bindis debut
as the head man on Au-
gust 29.
With the victory, it
matches the total games
won by the Rayders last
season. It was also the
first win over St. Ignace
in four years.
It was (is) pretty excit-
ing for all of us, coach
Bindi said. The kids
played well, they could
have folded a couple of
times when things didnt
go our way, but they
didnt, they kept doing
what they needed to and
earned the result.
With the game still
scoreless just about mid-
way through the third
quarter, Rayder KeNen
Borths scooped up a
Saints fumble and rum-
bled 35 yards for the first
score of the game and a 6-
0 Charlevoix lead. Borths
seemed to have a magnet
for the ball on defense as
he recovered three fum-
bles in the contest.
Sam Hovie capped a
nine play drive in the
fourth quarter as he
plunged in from 1-yard
out for a Rayder score
and a 12-0 Charlevoix lead
as the extra point attempt
was no good.
Hovie would then un-
leash a 52-yard dash to
the end zone late in the
fourth quarter, around
the three minute mark;
Luke Klinger would add
the two-point conversion
to make it 20-0 Rayders.
We had a couple of big
plays that kept drives
going in the fourth quar-
ter, one being a 22-yard re-
ception by Nate Moon
from Klinger on fourth
and two, coach Bindi
said.
Klinger would finish
the game 4-of-9 for 53
yards through the air,
while adding 77 yards on
the ground on 19 at-
tempts.
Hovie gained 84 yards
on nine carries and two
scores; Austin Putman
had two receptions for 29-
yards, and Moon one
catch for 22.
We had a fumble and
some penalties and the
kids just kept working
and rebounded from
them, Bindi noted. We
were looking for hustle,
pursuit, adversity and at-
titude, he added, We
made some mistakes,
struggled some, but they
are correctable, overall
we are very pleased with
the kids effort.
Defensively for
Charlevoix, Borths fin-
ished with 13 tackles,
Shane Sutherland
recorded 10 and two sacks
and had a fumble recov-
ery as the Rayders forced
six turnovers on the
night and also showed
their grit and toughness
with a pair of goal line
stands.
Sam Eakes and Hovie
each added eight tackles;
Bryan Noirot had six and
Putman added an inter-
ception.
St. Ignace is a good
football team, Bindi
added. We played with a
lot of hustle and a lot of
heart, they left every-
thing on the field, I could-
nt be prouder.
The Rayders (1-0) play
host to an always tough
Maple City Glen Lake
team in their home
opener on Friday, Septem-
ber 6 at 7pm at Kipke

MAPLE CITY The
Ramblers for the most part
outplayed the Lakers in
every facet of the game,
only to have some untimely
turnovers and miscues
spoil their season opener as
they fell to Glen Lake 27-13
on August 29 in a rematch
of their Division VI playoff
contest from last fall.
Boyne nearly doubled the
Lakers in total yardage for
the contest, 357-207, but the
untimely turnovers didnt
make things any easier for
the Ramblers against a
tough opponent.
Boyne City scored first as
junior quarterback Corey
Redman found his favorite
target from last season,
Maceo Vroman, for a 35-
yard touchdown reception
for a 6-0 Rambler lead
Glen Lake would then
score 20 unanswered points
before Boynes Malik Smith
rumbled in from five yards
out early in fourth quarter
and with Dalton Gardner
adding the point after; the
Ramblers trailed 20-13.
Glen Lakes Carter Lee,
capped the scoring with a
long touchdown run late in
the quarter (his second
score of the game) to make
it 27-13 Glen Lake with
under three minutes re-
maining in the contest.
Smith led the Ramblers
with 134 yards on the
ground on 27 carries and a
score, while Redman was
16-of-31 for 227 yards
through the air, with a TD
and two picks. Vroman
hauled in seven passes for
143 yards and a score, and
Bradley Fouchia had five
receptions for 43 yards.
Max Cuper and Luke
Sage led the Boyne defense
with nine and eight tackles,
respectfully, while Adam
Vondra finished with four.

Stress is the
condition or feel-
ing a person has
when they per-
ceive that de-
mands exceed
the personal and
social resources
the individual is
able to mobilize,
according to
Richard Lazarus.
For some people,
stress is a part of
daily life. Stress
can be both posi-
tive and nega-
tive. Stress can
motivate and improve per-
formance. Chronic stress
can be detrimental, both
physically and psychologi-
cally.
What is considered stress-
ful and how one responds to
stress will vary from one
person to another. Are you
under stress right now? Are
your jaw muscles clenched?
Take a deep breath. If that
is a different feeling for you,
it is possible you have been
experiencing the shallow
breathing that is common to
someone under stress.
When we are under
stress, our bodies respond
as though preparing for bat-
tle or escape. We might hold
our breath, getting ready for
the next stressful event.
When stress continues at a
high level for an extended
time period, our nervous
system is activated over and
over. If we dont take steps
to reduce the stress or re-
duce the intensity of the re-
sponse, our immune
systems are less able to de-
fend our bodies from infec-
tion and we are at risk of a
variety of illness.
Stress can also increase
our risk of illness by lead-
ing to sleepless nights and
poor dietary habits. Stress
is one of the leading causes
of insomnia and stress can
lead people to overeat or eat
very little. Chronic stress
can damage blood vessels,
increase inflammation and
result in atherosclerosis.
Stress increases the risk of
headaches, digestive prob-
lems, diabetes, and a range
of other health issues.
Here are some tips for
managing stress.
- Know your stressors:
Knowing what causes your
stress will help you know
how to manage it. It could
be a single thing or several
things. This might be hard
to sort out in the height of
the stressful moment.
When the stress has sub-
sided some, take a few deep
breaths and think about the
cause of the stress.
- Is the stressor a person?
Find ways to avoid the per-
son. If you arent able to
avoid them (maybe it is
your boss) you will need to
develop ways to prepare for
a potentially stressful expe-
rience and ways to deal
with the stress that results.
- Are you causing yourself
stress? Know your limits. If
your stress is a result of too
many demands, perhaps
you need to say no to reduce
your obligations or find oth-
ers who can help you deal
with your demands. Do you
have to do it all yourself or
are there others who would
help if asked?
- Take control of your en-
vironment. Does listening
to the news cause you
stress? Turn off the televi-
sion. Does your commute
cause stress? Can you leave
at a different time or take a
different route? Review
your schedule. Are you
using your time as effi-
ciently as possible? Time
wasted in activities that are
not supporting you could be
devoted to other activities.
Drop unnecessary activi-
ties and use the added
time wisely.
- These steps wont elimi-
nate all causes of stress. It
is important to develop cop-
ing strategies for the stress
that cant be avoided, next
week, more about coping
strategies.

The Charlevoix Area Hospital
Guild donated the funds for Boyne
Area Medical Center (BAMC) to
purchase a new audiograph ma-
chine, replacing the old audiograph
machine.
Local manufacturing companies
have approached BAMC, asking for
an advanced audio screening (hear-
ing test) for potential employees.
The audio screening is part of a pre-
employment screening. In the past,
BAMC has used an outdated audio-
graph machine to administer the
audio screening.
The new audiograph machine is
operated through a laptop computer.
During an audio evaluation, a par-
ticipant uses headphones to evalu-
ate the range of hearing a potential
candidate has. The audiograph is
then able to provide an accurate
reading of an individuals hearing.
According to Allyssa Mercer,
BAMC is so excited to have an up-
dated audiometer! It is easy to use
with accurate results.Its function-
ality is much better for our fast
paced office. It is convenient for our
patients as the staff can take the
laptop right to their room and do
the testing there. We are so thank-
ful to the Guild for their generous
gift!
BAMC would like to thank the
Charlevoix Area Hospital Guild for
donating the funds necessary for
the new audiograph machine.

3. RAKE ThE lEAvES
Raking leaves is no ones idea of
fun, but its important to remove
fallen leaves from your lawn as soon
as possible. Dont wait until all the
leaves have fallen from the trees to
start raking. If you do, the leaves
will become wet from rain and
morning dew, stick together and
form an impenetrable mat that, if
left there, will suffocate the grass
and breed fungal diseases.
An alternative to raking leaves is
to use a lawn mower with a collec-
tion bag or vacuum system. This is-
effective if you have a large yard
with many deciduous trees. Regard-
less of whether you use a rake or a
lawn mower, be sure to remove the
leaves before they turn into a soggy
mess.
4. FERTilizE FoR FuTuRE
gRoWTh
Most lawn experts agree: If you
fertilize your lawn only once a year,
do it in the fall. The reason? Grass
leaves grow much more slowly as
the weather turns cool, but the
grass roots and rhizomes continue
to grow quickly. Rhizomes are the
horizontal plant stems that lie just
beneath the soils surface; they pro-
duce the blades of grass above and
the roots below.
A fall application of fertilizer de-
livers essential nutrients for the
grass to grow deep roots now and to
keep nutrients in reserve for a
healthy start in the spring.
Wait until mid-to-late fall, then
apply a dry lawn fertilizer to all
grassy areas; dont miss any spots.
You could use a crank-style broad-
cast spreader, but for optimum cov-
erage, consider using a walk-behind
drop spreader. It takes a little
longer, especially on hilly yards, but
a drop spreader provides the best
way to apply an even, consistent
layer of fertilizer.

Ford, Americas truck leader,
adds the 2014 Ford F-150 STX Su-
perCrew and STX Sport Pack-
age to its lineup, offering
entry-level and value-oriented
truck customers capable, roomy
and stylish new options.
With the rapidly expanding
full-size pickup market continu-
ing to benefit from economic
growth and replacement de-
mand, price-conscious buyers
are returning looking for an af-
fordable truck with space, capa-
bility and style, said Doug
Scott, Ford truck group market-
ing manager. Adding the Ford F-
150 STX SuperCrew and the new
STX Sport Package to our 2014
lineup gives these truck shop-
pers more value-oriented F-150
models to consider.
The F-150 STX SuperCrew
meets the needs of first-time and
returning value-conscious
pickup truck customers, espe-
cially those who need to trans-
port a crew to a job site or take
the family on a trip.
Positioned between the work-
ready XL and popular XLT mod-
els, STX offers upgraded exterior
and interior features beyond
whats usually available for
entry-level crew cab pickups:
- Body-color front bumper fas-
cia, grille surrounds, and front
and rear step bumpers
- Power Equipment Group,
which includes power door
locks, integrated keyhead trans-
mitter remotes, power one-touch
up/down windows and sideview
mirrors, Illuminated Entry Sys-
tem and perimeter alarm
- 17-inch machined aluminum
wheels
- Audio input jack
- Cruise control
- Customer information dis-
play
- MyKey , a programmable
feature that allows fleet owners
and parents to limit top speed
and audio volume, and set speed-
alert chimes to encourage safer
driving
- Outside temperature display
- Front-row 40/20/40 premium
cloth bench seat
- Driver manual lumbar adjust
- Air conditioning
- AdvanceTrac with Roll Sta-
bility Control
- Tilt steering wheel
- AM/FM stereo with single
CD player
V6 engine, delivering an EPA-
estimated 17 mpg city and 23
mpg highway. Ford F-150 also of-
fers the half-ton segments only
available compressed natural
gas prep package.
A 5.0-liter V8 rated at 360
horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of
torque is also available, enabling
STX SuperCrew to tow up to
9,500 pounds when properly
equipped.
For buyers looking for extra
style and personalization, the
new STX Sport Package, avail-
able in all cab configurations,
strengthens vehicle appearance
with custom-inspired details.
The new STX Sport Package
adds:
- 20-inch machined aluminum
painted wheels with P275/55R20
tires
- Black billet grille with body-
color surround
- Black tubular running boards
- Black and Gray Piston cloth
front seats (40/console/40 on Su-
perCab and SuperCrew, 40/20/40
on Regular Cab)
- Color-coordinated carpet
- Unique box decals
Ford is offering this new con-
figuration at a time when truck
sales continue to be a bright spot
in the economy. Sales of full-size
pickups through July are up 23
percent, compared to an indus-
try that is up 8 percent, making
it the fastest growth segment
this year. Through July, 427,935
Ford F-Series pickups have been
sold. Ford F-Series is Americas
best-selling vehicle for 31 consec-
utive years and best-selling truck
for 36 consecutive years.
