CHARLEVOIX As of October there will be
new health insurance options, opening up insur-
ance and health care to people who have been
struggling to find coverage. Yet people are con-
fused or overwhelmed as to how the Affordable
Healthcare Act (Obamacare) will impact them.
Answers to most of these questions will be pre-
sented at the Charlevoix Public Library on Sep-
tember 16 at 6:30 p.m. Leading this public forum
will be Lyn Jenks, CEO of Charlevoix Area Hos-
pital and Linda Yaroch, RN, Health Officer with
the Health Department of Northern Michigan.
People previously denied coverage, people who
have not been able to afford health insurance;
people who are under-insured will have better ac-
cess to insurance and health care under the Af-
fordable Health Care Act. The
enrollment period begins this
October.
The gathering will be a nuts
and bolts discussion, clarifying
the facts of the Affordable
Health Care Act and how indi-
viduals can navigate the sys-
tem, including where to find
assistance.
People are frightened and
confused, Ms. Jenks recently
observed.
We will deal with questions
that directly affect individu-
als, she continued.
The forum will explain how
the insurance exchanges will
work, how the new plans will
affect individual premiums,
how to enroll, what resources are available to
help individuals apply, and what tax credits and
subsidies are available for low-income individu-
als and families.
Ms. Jenks will focus on federal and state im-
pacts of the new law.
Ms. Jenks will also clear up misconceptions in-
cluding the fear that senior citizens Medicare or
Medicare Advantage plans will be impacted. In
fact, people currently enrolled in Medicare will
see no change in their insurance nor their premi-
ums.
What I can do is help people understand the
new law, Ms. Jenks says.
Local responses and the application process
will be explained by Linda Yaroch, Health Officer
and Public Health Nurse with the County Health
Department.
We are developing robust out-reach and edu-
cation plans for 8 counties across northern
Michigan including Charlevoix, said Ms.
Yaroch.
There will be enrollment opportunities and
application assistance through the health depart-
ment, hospitals, federally qualified health cen-
ters, and other community partners.
Individuals may also enroll on their own but if
they want assistance there will be people trained
to help.
Uninsured, under-insured, and people who
have previously been denied coverage will re-
ceive help never before available, according to
both Ms. Jenks and Ms. Yaroch.
Thirty two million Americans who could not
get health insurance will now be helped, noted
Ms. Jenks.
When the dust settles Americans will look
back and ultimately say it is a good
thing.
Studies from other states, including
California and New York, have shown
that individual premiums are actually
falling and the subsidies to help
poorer individuals are having a posi-
tive impact, according to recent re-
ports.
Already there has been a positive
impact on hospital and health care
costs, the Charlevoix Area Hospital
CEO added.
We are seeing a bending of the
health care costs curve where in the
past they have done nothing but esca-
late. We will now be paid for quality
and out-comes not volume. We will be
penalized if hospital readmission
rates are too high. Physicians will be
encouraged to not duplicate tests and to think
twice before ordering inappropriate tests.
Electronic health records will bring portabil-
ity. For example, your doctor in Florida will see
the exact same records as your doctor in
Charlevoix, ultimately saving the whole system
money.
The informational forum on September 16,
(6:30 pm) at the Charlevoix Public Library (Com-
munity Rooms), is designed to provide vital infor-
mation to everyone in the community. Time will
be allowed for the many questions people will
have. A non-partisan event, it is being hosted by
the Charlevoix Democratic Party.
Many people are confused and frightened and
are hearing way too much political rhetoric.
Health care should not be political, states Kris
Busk, local party chairperson.
We hope everyone with a question, everyone
with concerns or doubts, will come listen to these
two experts.

EAST JORDANEast Jor-
dan EMS plans to move for-
ward with the replacement of
an ambulance chassis to
bring new life to an old rig,
while offering cost savings of
$30K.
At the September 3 meeting
of the East Jordan city com-
mission, commissioners
agreed to participate in the
replacement of an ambulance
chassis and sign an interim
agreement for the $127,886
purchase.
During recent meetings of
the East Jordan EMS Author-
ity Steering Committee, the
committee began looking at
the condition and mileage of
the citys four ambulances. It
came to their attention that
Unit 54 Alpha-1, a 2001 ambu-
lance, has 190K miles on it
and should be considered for
replacement.
While the city and town-
ships are currently working
together to form an ambu-
lance authority, the new en-
tity will not become effective
until April 1, 2015, pending
voter approval and collection
of its first millage. The city
and township representatives
of the committee do not feel
that the ambulance in ques-
tion will be safe to run in its
current state until that time.
EMS director Jay Peck said
it quickly became a question
of ambulance replacement
versus chassis replacement.
To purchase a new ambulance
would cost roughly $160K,
whereas it would cost just
under $130K to install the ex-
isting box of the ambulance
on a new chassis.
Were talking 30 thousand
[dollars], said Peck. If we
can save 30 now and 30 down
the roadnow were at 60
thousand [dollars] towards a
new [ambulance].
Peck said they have spoken
with most of the other town-
ships, and they have been in
agreement to move forward
with the new chassis.

Helen Ann Arman, 92
Helen Ann Arman formerly of
Boyne Falls and Petoskey, died Mon-
day, Sept. 9, 2013, at Bay Bluffs of Har-
bor Springs.
Helens life will be remembered and
celebrated during a funeral Mass at
10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, at St.
Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
Friends are welcome to pay respects
on Thursday morning in the church
gathering space beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Interment will take place within
Greenwood Cemetery.
Mary Lou Davis, 64
Mary Lou Davis of East Jordan en-
tered the Kingdom of Heaven on
Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, in Grand
Rapids.
The funeral service will be noon
Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at the Penzien
Funeral Homes Inc. in East Jordan.
The family will receive friends from
11 a.m. until the time of service on
Saturday.
Robert E. Hoeksema, 69
Robert E. Hoeksema of Kalkaska
died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at Mun-
son Medical Center in Traverse City.
Visitation took place 4-7 p.m. Sun-
day at Hastings Funeral Home in
Ellsworth.
The funeral service was Monday,
Sept. 9, at the Ellsworth Christian Re-
formed Church with the Rev. Alex D.
Snider officiating. Burial in Atwood
Cemetery.
Jean Limron, 91
(deC. 6, 1921 - SePt. 4, 2013)
Jean Limron of Boyne City passed
away Sept. 4, 2013.
Jean was born on Dec. 6, 1921, in
Prescott, Mich., to Arthur and Lela
(Arnold) MacLean. She attended 12
grades of school in Prescott and three
years at Hurley Nursing School in
Flint.
While in nursing school, she met
her husband, Fay Limron, and they
were married Aug. 3, 1941. They
raised their family in the Flint area
where Fay worked at General Motors
Buick Plant. Jeans career was nurs-
ing and she later worked as clerk for
Mount Morris Township. She was
also the past president of the Ameri-
can Legion Auxiliary Post 3087. Upon
retirement, they moved to the Boyne
City area.
Jean and Fay loved the outdoors
and enjoyed many years of camping,
fishing, hunting, traveling and pick-
ing berries and morel mushrooms in
their woods. When Fay passed away
in 2004, Jean continued attending the
senior center, American Legion,
weekly card club, music in the park
and church. She loved to socialize and
get together with family and friends.
In 2012, she moved to The Brook in
Boyne City where she became a
beloved member of that family.
Jean is survived by four daughters,
Linda (James) Felton of Boyne City,
Diane (Leonard) Nowak of Indian
River, Betty (Richard) Austin of Du-
rand and Judy (Steve) Travis of Col-
orado Springs; 10 grandchildren, 16
great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-
law, Iva Dell MacLean and Dottie
MacLean. She was preceded in death
by her mother and father; husband,
Fay; daughter, Janet; and brothers,
Norman and Donald.
Thank you to the staff of The
Brook and Hospice of Michigan for
the loving care, kindness and encour-
agement provided to Jean and our
family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be
made to the Boyne City Senior Center,
American Legion, or Walloon Lake
Community Church.
A celebration of Jeans life was
Monday, Sept. 9, at the Walloon Lake
Community Church.

Angeline G. Borths, 88
(deC. 22, 1924 - aug. 31, 2013)
Angeline G. Borths of Charlevoix
passed away Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at
Charlevoix Area Hospital.
Funeral Mass was Thursday, Sept.
5, at St. Marys Church in Charlevoix,
with burial in St. Marys Cemetery.
Born Dec. 22, 1924, in Renovo, Pa., to
John G. and Carmella (Grieco) Poleto,
she graduated from St. Joseph High
School in Renovo on June 10, 1943.
She served with the U.S. Army Air
Corps during World War II from 1945-
46.
On Sept. 30, 1948, she married
Henry D. Borths in Manitowoc, Wis.,
where they made their home until
moving to Charlevoix in 1967, when
Henry came to work at the start-up
Medusa Portland Cement Company.
Henry preceded her in death Feb. 17,
1975.
Angeline was a member of St.
Marys Church in Charlevoix, and
served as president of Charlevoix
VFW Auxiliary. She was a movie buff,
and enjoyed going to the casinos. She
regularly sponsored her sons bowling
team, and ran for Charlevoix City
Council in 1974. Most of all, she loved
being with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children,
Mike (Darlene) Borths of Charlevoix,
Carmella (Earl) Grams of East Jor-
dan, John (Maryann) Borths, Bob
(Cooky) Borths, all of Charlevoix,
Margaret (Jim) Werden of Alanson,
Charley (Doris) Borths of Marshfield,
Wis., James (Cathy) Borths of Tampa,
Fla., Regina (Richard) Stearns of
Northport, Richard Borths of
Charlevoix, Joe (Cathy) Borths of
Stevensville, Connie (Todd) Eggers of
Ellsworth; 29 grandchildren; 28 great-
grandchildren; one great-great-grand-
child; sister, Dorothy Rathsack, of
Manitowoc; and brother, Charlie Po-
leto, of Renovo.
Angeline was preceded in death by
a brother, Angelo Poleto; brother-in-
law, Leroy Rathsack; son-in-law, Ken-
neth Himebauch; and grandson, Kyle
Anthony Borths.

9020 Lake Street for the 4th Annual
Ellsworth Archery Tournament!
There will be a kids shoot, adult
fun/novice shoot, adult competitive
shoot, bare bow no site, bare com-
pound no site shoot and open class
compound shoot.
Join in for a day of friendly compe-
tition with your friends and family
in the great outdoors during the won-
derful early fall temperatures of
northern Michigan. The charming
village of Ellsworth is Home of
Michigans Largest Public Archery
Range, and the beautiful Ellsworth
Community Park is the perfect spot
to gather and join in the challenge
and fun of this highly anticipated an-
nual event.
The archery tournament is open to
bow handlers of all ages and skill
levels. Those who register will re-
ceive $5 gift certificate valid at sev-
eral shops in the Village of
Ellsworth.
Registration fees are:
- Youth 9 & Under and Ages 10-16
categories - $10.00. There will be
bows available free of charge. Please
note that an adult must be present
for youths to compete in the shooting
contest. The 9 and under competition
will begin at 9:30 am and the ages 10

ing a platform of fresh
ideas and a new open-door
approach to state gover-
nance, well-known East Jor-
dan resident Tony Cutler
announced his candidacy
for the 105th house seat.
It has been an honor and
a privilege to serve the resi-
dents of East Jordan these
past years, and I can think
of nothing greater than
continuing to work on
everyones behalf in the
House of Representatives,
he announced.
Cutler, a Republican, has
emphasized the importance
of the future role Michi-
gans legislature in leading
a strong economic come-
back and reaching an im-
proved quality of life for the
Northern Michigan region.
Our focus needs to con-
tinue to be on creating high
quality, high paying jobs for
our friends and family, by
identifying and capitalizing
on the unique and incredi-
ble economic climate we
have as a tourism, agricul-
tural, and educational hub
in this state.
Cutler pledged to make
his campaign about people,
not politics. We need repre-
sentation who wont forget
their Northern Michigan
roots, Cutler, 30, added.
Cutler will also be
strongly advocating for wise
and critical infrastructure
investments while remov-
ing redundancy and politi-
cal waste. Michigan has to
be smarter about how we
approach these issues with-
out raising the burden on
our taxpayers and resi-
dents.
Cutler is currently the
deputy mayor of the City of
East Jordan and has previ-
ously served on the Board
of Review. He is a graduate
of Lake Superior State Uni-
versity where he earned de-
grees in finance and
economics and business ad-
ministration management.

Family thwarts home invasion
in Boyne City
The Boyne City Police responded to
a call of Home Invasion at approxi-
mately 4:15 this morning in the 1400
block of Pleasant Avenue.
A homeowner called 911and re-
ported that an intoxicated male had
broken their front door and entered
the residence. When the responding
officer arrived, he found the intruder
being detained in a chair by the male
homeowner. The homeowner had
armed himself with a hand gun and
ordered the intruder to sit there until
police arrived. The suspect was ar-
rested at the scene without further in-
cident. The responding officer found
the suspect to be highly intoxicated
and police believe he may have also
been using drugs. The suspect also
lives in Boyne City.
While the family was sleeping in the
house, the suspect apparently tried to
get in the back door and was unsuc-
cessful. He then went to the front of
the house, kicked in the door and en-
tered the front room. The homeowners
2 teenage children were awakened by
the sound of the intrusion and alerted
their parents. The parents confronted
the suspect in the front room.
Boyne City Police Chief Jeff Gaither
said that the homeowners showed
amazing composure and restraint in
the confrontation. Although this was a
scary experience for the homeowners
and their family, nobody was hurt.
This appears to be a random home
invasion and nothing was taken by the
suspect. There was damage to the
front door which had been deadbolt
locked.

ELLSWORTHThe small pri-
vate school located within the
limits of Ellsworth Village expe-
rienced a turnover in staff simi-
lar to that of the villages public
schools this year. Upon arrival on
the first day of school last week,
students in grades third through
eighth were greeted by new
teachers at Ebenezer Christian
School.
The Preschool through eighth
grade Christian Worldview
school educates in a style similar
to the old one room classroom.
Our teachers teach in a multi-age
classroom in which all students
are part of the instruction and
have an opportunity to be in-
volved in advanced learning.Be-
cause of the blended classrooms,
students learn to become inde-
pendent workers, and problems
solvers which challenge them ac-
ademically and socially, said
Ebenezer Administrator Sarah
Essenberg. The school has been
operating in Ellsworth for the
last 70 years and follows the state
mandated Common Core curricu-
lum with a faith based perspec-
tive. Our students have been
very successful academically and
our highly qualified staff is very
innovative and creative within
the classroom, she said.
Jeannine Sladick, the new high
energy third and fourth grade
teacher, is a perfect example of
the innovative and creative staff
Essenberg was speaking of. She
has prior teaching experience at
East Jordan Elementary School
and Concord Academy Antrim
and has received a Bachelor of
Arts in Elementary Education
from Spring Arbor University.
She taught the K-12 dance at Con-
cord as well as after school dance
and for the traditional percussive
dance company, Dance Attack.
Movement and dance have been
my passion for many years, fuel-
ing my energy for many collabo-
rative projects involving the
academic and arts teachers in
our building.Though it is no
longer the sole focus of my teach-
ing, I do hope to incorporate pur-
poseful movement into our
classroom to enhance learning.
Its not just a fun way to learn, it
is the most effective way or
brains retain information, said
Sladick.
She has five children, Peter 25,
Ehren, 22, Briana 20, Isaiah 17,
and Simon 15, and has lived in
East Jordan since 2003. Sladick
has successfully integrated aca-
demic subjects into the dance
curriculum for students in
grades K-12 throughout her ca-
reer.The acquired experience
in dance added the necessary ele-
ment of creativity every teacher
must display in the classroom.
This has allowed me to design
creative memorable lessons to
meet the multiple intelligences of
students across the curriculum,
she said. Most of her lessons in-
corporate a variety of manipula-
tives and brain-compatible
activities. She explained that one
of her greatest strengths is creat-
ing lesson plans that actively in-
volve the students and keep their
attention. I also feel strongly
that affirming every student
throughout the day as they build
their self-confidence must be a
top priority, she said.
Sladicks favorite subjects have
always been the arts and espe-
cially dance but when pressed to
choose an academic she chose
math. I love teaching math and
coming up with fun active ways
to engage students but I also
enjoy guiding students to becom-
ing better readers and writers. It
is extremely rewarding to watch
them gain confidence and a sense
of accomplishment as their skills
improve so they can truly com-
prehend what they read and then
convey their thoughts in their
own published works, she said.
Fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth
graders were greeted by Natalie
Malpass and her circle of power
and respect. She comes to
Ebenezer with a Bachelors de-
gree in communications from De-
Paul University and a Masters de-
gree in education from Arizona
State University. During my two
years in Phoenix I taught 4th
grade and truly fell in love with
teaching, said Malpass. She
moved to Chicago to join a team
of passionate teachers and start a
new charter school in the city
that focused on creating a rigor-
ous college prep academic pro-
gram to help prepare students to
be the first generation in their
families to go to college. There
she taught kindergarten and first
grade. After teaching for 5 years,
I moved into administration and
worked on curriculum develop-
ment, teacher coaching, and pro-
fessional development, she said.
Malpass is a recent transplant
to Northern Michigan having
just moved to East Jordan where
her husbands extended family
lives, in July. She has been mar-
ried for 6 years to husband,
Matthew and the couples imme-
diate family includes a golden re-
triever, Hanzel, and Bailey, a
poodle mix. We are happy to be
here in such a beautiful place
with his family so nearby, she
said. Malpass was attracted to
Ebenezer because of its great
word of mouth reputation.
Everyone speaks highly of the
quality of education children get
there. The students are wonderful
and come from great families,
she said. She also likes the small
class size and multiage set up.
Her goal is to push her students
to work harder and think more
critically, but understands that
every student should feel a great
sense of accomplishment with
how much they grow in a year. I
am hoping to support students to
take charge of their own learning
and push themselves to be the
best they can, she said.
The school will be incorporat-
ing some other changes as
well. Im excited to have both
Natalie and Jeanine here at
Ebenezer as I feel they are both
bringing new ideas and teaching
strategies from their past experi-
encesnot only into their own
classroom,but the others as well.
They are both strong leaders who
have a passion for teaching that
was clear the first week of
school. We will also be using
Lucy Calkins new writing pro-
gram for the whole school, which
is new to the school this year,
said Essenberg.

PROCEEDS BENEFIT THE BOYNE VALLEY FOOD PANTRY

It is a well-recognized name that
symbolizes services and programs
that provide a means for people in
need to get back on their feet and re-
gain their treasured independence.
Goodwill has been around since 1902,
when a Boston area Methodist Minis-
ter named Rev. Edgar Helms began
collecting used household goods and
clothing, and hired those who were
down on their luck to mend and re-
pair those goods for resale. Here in
Northern Michigan, Goodwill opened
their doors at Asgard Enterprises in
1972, and today the non-profit organi-
zation offers vocational, housing,
transportation, nutritional and fam-
ily strengthening programs across
the region.
Goodwill also continues to offer
gently used clothing, household
items, books, home dcor accessories
and more at their Retail and Dona-
tion Centers. In our area, centers are
located in Petoskey and Gaylord, em-
ploying a total of 34 people, utilizing
proceeds from sales at each location
to help support programs throughout
Northern Michigan that help people
overcome barriers to independence.
Part of our business model is also
being green, observes Ruth Blick,
Director of Marketing and Communi-
cations for Goodwill Industries of
Northern Michigan. Everything
that is donated to our stores is either
reduced, reused or recycled. Items
that come in that dont meet quality
standards go thru our salvage pro-
gram. We are also in partnership
with Dell Reconnect and we accept all
types of computer equipment and re-
cycle those items. Many people dont
realize that a computer monitor can
contain up to a pound of lead. We are
able to safely recycle those units.
Goodwill also recycles metal items,
cardboard, purses, belts, shoes, books
and clothing. The gently used items
on the sales floor follow a rotation
model where they are on display for
four weeks a regular price, then half-
off for a week, then reduced per item
to 99-cents for adult sizes and 49-cents
for children sizes, and those items
are finally recycled if not sold.
So there are always items at sale
prices when someone visits our
store, observes Ruth Blick. People
want to see different items on display
when they visit us. Thousands of
items are regularly coming in and
going out of our stores.
Submitting items for donation is
easy. Each location has a drive up do-
nation center, open 7 days a week,
and members of the Goodwill team
will happily unload items from the
donators vehicle.
The 6,000 square foot Goodwill Re-
tail and Donation Center at 1361
Pineview Drive in Gaylord is open
Monday through Saturday from 9 am
to 7 pm, and Sunday from 11am until
6 pm. The 6,700 square foot Goodwill
Retail and Donation Center at 1600
Anderson Road in Petoskey is open
Monday through Saturday from 9 am
to 8 pm, and Sunday from 11am until
6 pm.

Sarah Chojnacki was named
Branch Manager/Loan Officer
for the Petoskey North office lo-
cated on East Mitchell Road. Cho-
jnacki has served as a loan officer
since 2005 and recently cele-
brated her ten year anniversary
with Bay Winds. Her community
involvement includes assisting
with the organization of the
United Ways Instant Wine Cellar
event and volunteering with
Petoskeys Festival on the Bay
and the Petoskey Area Jaycees
Annual 5K Run. Sarahs expert-
ise and community involvement
made her a logical choice for this
position, said BWFCU Presi-
dent/CEO David Leusink. She
prides herself on delivering high-
quality service to our members.

Stephen A. Daly has been pro-
moted to the position of Loan Of-
ficer. A lifelong Petoskey
resident, Daly worked previously
in BayWinds accounting depart-
ment. He currently volunteers
with the Petoskey Area Jaycees
and was recently admitted into
the prestigious Leadership Little
Traverse program. Stephen has
demonstrated a solid grasp of
lending and continues to distin-
guish himself as a quick learner
and talented member of our loan
department, Leusink com-
mented. He is conscientious and
possesses an extremely high de-
gree of professionalism. Daly
currently works out of the
Charlevoix office, but may serve
in several BWFCU branches as
future member lending needs dic-

The Boyne Area Cham-
bers fifth annual State of
the Community luncheon
will be held Sept. 12. Those
who attend will get a first-
hand update on highlights
of the past year for our
city, county, schools and
downtown. Youll meet and
greet business and civic

lunch in a beautiful lake-
side setting. This years
event will be held at Som-
merset Pointe from 12 noon

Pong Ball drop at the end of

On Saturday, Sept. 28,
folks all over the area will
host dinner parties, invit-
ing their friends to a bene-
fit for the Charlevoix Area
Humane Society. The par-
ties can be themed, fancy
or just a potluck. Also,
some area restaurants will
be also hosting parties
with special dinner rates
with a portion of the bill to
benefit the CAHS. Guests
should be informed ahead
of time that the dinner is a
fundraising event for the
Humane Society and, at
some point during the din-
ner parties, the host will
solicit a donation from
each guest. Party starting
times can be varied; how-
ever, at 8pm all partici-
pants are invited to a grand
afterglow party at the
Charlevoix Country Clubs
newly remodeled historic
Shanahan Barn. At the Af-
terglow, we will have
desserts prepared by area
restaurants. There, we will
tally and celebrate the
fundraising results with
cocktails and dancing to
the live music of The Mis-
stery Spot band, featuring

A project is now under-
way to compile a second col-
lection of historical
remembrances of East Jor-
dan. Tentative plans are to
publish this second volume
in spring 2014 in the form of
an interesting and educa-
tional book that would be il-
lustrated with many photos.

this project is currently so-
liciting stories and photos
for the book and has issued
an open invitation to anyone
who would like to con-
tribute. Of particular inter-
est is the Tourist Park/Camp
and Sportsmans Park;
Charlevoix Co. Fairgrounds;
the pickle, cigar and gum
factories; Canners independ-
ent basketball team; and
East Jordan Airport. The

restaurant that will serve them on their boats, during a celebration and ribbon cutting in honor of the restaurants open-
ing Monday, September 9.Although most people didnt even realize that it had been closed,after sixteen years, previous
owners Lyle Miller and Tom Sherridan had decided to close down the restaurant and turn the property into a luxury
motor home complex this past fall. Berg and Parish were able to purchase and open the restaurant in time for Memorial
Day weekend. We were so busy right out of the gate we hadnt had time for the ribbon cutting, said Parish. This sum-
mer has exceeded all of our expectations, here we are still busy and its after Labor Day, said Berg. Hors doeuvres, live
music and perfect weather made the celebration a success.

emergency siren. The fire
department and public
works department recently
coordinated to remove the
siren from the old fire hall

son Jr. for his 20 years of
dedicated work for the
East Jordan Department of
Public Works. Kitson was
employed for the city from
June 6, 1966 until July 28,
1986. Kitson died Friday,
August 23, 2013.
The commissioners ap-
proved use of city facilities
and street closures at the
September 3 meeting for
the 4th Annual East Jor-
dan Pumpkin Festival and
Leaf Peeker Craft Show. A
signature family friendly
event, the festival will in-
clude childrens activities
in Memorial Park, the Leaf
Peeker Craft Show, deals
on wheels tailgate sale, an
archery demo, and pump-
kin launch. The festival
will take place on Satur-
day, October 19.
The next regular meet-
ing of the East Jordan City
Commission is scheduled
for Monday, September 16
at 7pm.

Wealthy, but not spoiled

How do you make sure
you dont spoil your child
when youre wealthy?

Dear Ryan,
I know this will sound
mean to some people, but
you simply explain to them
that they are not wealthy.
I remember a time years
ago, after wed gone broke,
that we managed to scrimp
and save and finally had a
little bit of wealth. We
bought a nice car and my
son piped up from the back
seat, all smug and satisfied,
Were doing pretty good,
huh? Ill admit it was kind
of funny, but it was also a
teachable moment. I looked
at him and said, Im doing
pretty good, but youre
broke! That was a pretty
consistent message around
the Ramsey household as
the kids were growing up. If
youre not working and
making your own way,
youve got nothing.
The second thing is we
taught them, from a very
young age, was to work.
That can start with simple
things like kids cleaning up
their rooms or doing the
dishes after dinner. It should
carry over to the teenage
years as well. Every able-
bodied child should be work-
ing and earning money,
whether its their own entre-
preneurial idea, at a store in
the mall or babysitting.
The third thing we did
was based in our faith. As
evangelical Christians, we
taught our kids that we
dont really own anything. It
all belongs to God, and one
of our jobs is to wisely man-
age the things He entrusts to
us. The first rule is to take
care of your own house-
holdthe important stuff.
After that, its okay to have
some nice things, but its not
all about pleasure. Its also
about giving and extraordi-
nary levels of generosity.
Teach them to work.
Teach them to be givers.
And gently remind them
once in a while that theyve
got nothing until they go
out and earn it.

My dad opened a credit
card account in his name a
few years ago to help with
my college bills, and he
made me an authorized
user. Now hes delinquent
on the card and Im receiv-
ing collection calls and no-
tices. Do I owe the credit
card company money?

Dear Steve,
No, an authorized user is
not liable. The account is in
your dads name, and you
didnt sign anything. Hes
the one legally responsible
for the money owed.
I want you to be careful,
though. Lots of credit card
companies will badger peo-
ple and use all kinds of pres-
sure and guilt trips to try to
collect money from people
who dont owe them any-
thing. They just want their
money, and they really dont
care who writes the check.
Get them to remove you as
an authorized user today.
Send them a letter demand-
ing this via certified mail,
return receipt requested, so
youll have proof. Also,
make sure they understand
that youll sue them for
about $10 million if they
dont comply immediately.
You shouldnt be reported to
the credit bureaus for any of
this, but companies can re-
port just about anything
even inaccurate
informationto the bu-
reaus.
You have rights as a con-
sumer, and you are not
legally liable for credit card
debt when youre just an au-
thorized user. But make
sure you check your credit
report regularly in the fu-
ture. Some of these compa-
nies make a habit of
repeatedly downloading
misinformation to the bu-
reaus in an effort to bother
and bully people into paying
debts they dont owe!

technology classes. Com-
puter Basics, 10:30 a.m.,
September 16 & 18 will
provide a great overview
and introduction to com-
puting, including how to
use a mouse. This Basics
class is geared towards
people who have never
used a computer or have
very little experience. In
order to be comfortable in
the rest of the classes,
participants are asked to
know how to use a mouse,
operate at least one basic
software program, and
search the internet.
QuickBooks, Just the Ba-
sics, 6:30 p.m., September
24 will instruct the users
on getting started with
QuickBooks financial
software. I have a new
eReader, Now What? 10:30
a.m., October 2, will give
basic instruction on how
to use eReaders and how
to check out digital books
from the library. Intro-
duction to Microsoft
Word 2007, 10:30 a.m., Oc-
tober 8 & 10 will give at-
tendees a basic working
knowledge of this word
processing software. I
have a new iPad, Now
What? 10:30 a.m., October
28 & 30, will teach the
basic use of this popular
mobile device, including
instruction on the latest
upgrade. The classes are
all held in the Librarys
Computer Lab, with the
exception of the iPad
class which is held in the
community meeting
room. If patrons need

downloading library
eBooks to their eReader,

The technology instruc-
tors at the library include
Roger Gowell, Scott Sil-
berhorn, and Rick
Malamed. Roger Gowell,
the instructor for the Ba-
sics and Microsoft
classes, has mastered the
method of teaching core
skills. Mr. Gowell knows
exactly how to word
something so I can under-
stand it, states student
Mrs. Moleskin, and he
always makes my ques-
tions sound important.
Rick Malamed, Tip of the
Mitt IT, will be instruct-
ing the QuickBooks class.
Scott Silberhorn, the
newest of the library
technology instructors, is
the Apple expert and the
mobile device wizard.
Scott is extremely pa-
tient and helps me truly
understand the steps to
making the most of my
iPad, exclaimed Suzy
Farbman.
