ENAE414 Aerodynamics II Spring Semester 2011 T, Thru 9:30-10:45 CSI 3117

Prof. M. Pino Martin 3172 Martin Hall Office hours by appointment Email: mpmartin@umd.edu Text Book: Anderson, Fundamentals of Aerodynamics McGraw Hill 4th or 5th Edition. Course notes will supplement material in the text Pre-requisites: ENAE 311 Course Objectives: The purpose of this course is to introduce the fundamentals of inviscid, incompressible flows and their application to the lifting theory of airfoils and finite wings. Course Topics: Aerodynamics of inviscid incompressible flows. Vorticity, circulation, the stream function and the velocity potential. Bernoulli's and Laplace's equations. Flows in low speed wind tunnels and airspeed measurement. Potential flows involving sources and sinks, doublets, and vortices. Development of the theory of airfoils and wings. An introduction to boundary layer flows. Grading: Grades will be based on 7 bi-weekly problem sets (30%), 2 midterm exams (40%), a final exam (30%). Homework is due at the beginning of class on the days indicated. Exams are closed book/notes, but a formula sheet can be brought. Course Schedule: The course schedule is shown in the table on the next page. Problem sets are handed out every other Tuesday and are due on Thursday of the following week. Midterms will be on Thursdays (as indicated) and are planned not to coincide with problem set due dates. A review of the course material will be held on the last day of class in preparation for the final exam. Honor Code: Keep in mind the University Honor Code: http://www.shc.umd.edu The University of Maryland, College Park has a nationally recognized Code of Academic Integrity, administered by the Student Honor Council. This Code sets standards for academic integrity at Maryland for all undergraduate and graduate students. As a student you are responsible for upholding these standards for this course. It is very important for you to be aware of the consequences of cheating, fabrication, facilitation, and plagiarism. You are welcome to collaborate on problem sets, however the work you turn in must be your own and your collaboration partners must be identified on your solutions. Teaching Assistant TBD
