Directions: Think about each line of the poem. Then for each of the three parts of this Bible
study, read the key word definitions. The definitions are from the 1828 Noah
Webster Dictionary. Notice the changes of the tenses of the key words. Then for
each of the verses, find and read the contexts. Keep notes about what you learn
about each of the lines of the “Poem That Teaches”. This assignment is worth 3
units, so write at least 4 quality pages.
Part 1

JUSTIFICA'TION, n.
1. The act of justifying; a showing to be just or conformable to law, rectitude or propriety;
vindication; defense. The court listened to the evidence and arguments in justification of the
prisoner's conduct. Our disobedience to God's commands admits no justification.
2. Absolution. “I hope, for my brother's justification, he wrote this but as an essay of my
virtue.”
3. In law, the showing of a sufficient reason in court why a defendant did what he is called to
answer. “Pleas in justification must set forth some special matter.”

4. In theology, remission of sin and absolution from guilt and punishment; or an act of free
grace by which God pardons the sinner and accepts him [or her] as righteous, on account of
the atonement of Christ.
JUST'IFIER, n. One who justifies; one who vindicates, supports or defends.
1. He who pardons and absolves from guilt and punishment. “That He might be just, and the
justifier of him [or her] who believeth in Jesus.” Romans 3

Luke 10:29 “But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, ‘And who is my
neighbor?’”

Part 2
SANC'TIFY, v.t. [Low L. sanctifico; from sanctus, holy, and facio, to make.]
1. In a general sense, to cleanse, purify or make holy.
2. To separate, set apart or appoint to a holy, sacred or religious use. “God blessed the seventh
day and sanctified it.” Genesis 2
3. To purify; to prepare for divine service, and for partaking of holy things. Exodus 19
4. To separate, ordain and appoint to the work of redemption and the government of the church.
John 10
5. To cleanse from corruption; to purify from sin; to make holy be detaching the affections from
the world and its defilements, and exalting them to a supreme love to God. “Sanctify them
through Thy truth; Thy Word is truth.” John 17 and Ephesians 5
6. To make the means of holiness; to render productive of holiness or piety. “Those judgments
of God are the more welcome, as a means which his mercy hath sanctified so to me, as to
make me repent of that unjust act.”
7. To make free from guilt.

1. The act of giving glory or of ascribing honors to.
2. Exaltation to honor and dignity; elevation to glory; as the glorification of Christ after His
Resurrection.

Matthew 5:16 “‘Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works
and glorify your Father in Heaven.’”

John 12:28 “‘Father, glorify Your name.’ Then a voice came from Heaven, saying, “I have
both glorified it and will glorify it again.”

John 13:32 “‘If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify
Him immediately.’”

John 16:14 “‘He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.’”
