Materials: 1380 yards of fingering weight yarn. For summer I suggest a cotton, silk, bamboo, or soy blend. This shawl has a few mitered Squares and looks great worked with a selfstripe yarn. Tayio by Noro is a wonderful cotton/wool blend in the stripes. You will need 3 100gm skeins, (I had 35 grams left of Tayio when completed, about 150yds). I also made one in SWTC Tofutsies Sock Yarn and it is very beautiful. (I had 43 grams left over in Tofutsies) Size 4 (3.5mm) 24-32 needles Markers optional Measurements: top center to bottom center = 33, 24 wide, top wing span = 72, bottom wing span = 90 Legend: K - knit P purl Slip wyib with yarn in the back of work, slip the stitch as if to purl from left needle to right. Slip wyif - with yarn in front of work, slip the stitch as if to purl from left needle to right, then if you are knitting the next stitch move the yarn between needles to back, if you are purling the next stitch, leave it in the front. Cdd Each clue will tell you which way to work this Knitted Cast On - Start with a slipknot: *Knit 1, leaving stitch on left needle. Transfer new stitch onto left needle by slipping it knit-wise (going into stitch from the bottom). Repeat from *. You may also use the cabled cast on: after you have 2sts on your needle, cast on going between the 2sts instead of in the stitch itself. Picking up stitches on the mitered squares: Right side is always facing. Pick up both horizontal bars on the edge or if dont want the big ridge on back, pick up the horizontal bar closest to the right side on garter stitches and the closest bar to the wrong side on stocking stitch sections. Clue 1: Starting with square 1: Cast on 59sts using the knitted or cabled cast on. Then follow the Mitered Square Directions on following page. When you get to the last row you have only 1 stitch on your needle, do not bind off. Squares 2, 3, start the square using the last stitch from previous square. This stitch counts as the first stitch on new square. Starting on the stitch next to it along top edge, pick up and knit 29 more stitches. Make sure the last stitch you pick up is in the very end of previous square point; this will make them line up nicely. Now using a knitted cast on 29 more stitches for a total of 59sts. Follow the directions for the small Mitered Squares. Note: on square 3, end and Bind off on last stitch.

Squares 4, 5, start the square by casting on 29 stitches. Now pick up and knit 30sts along the appropriate square lying next to it, starting at the bottom with right side facing. You now have 59sts. Follow the directions for the small Mitered Squares. Note: on square 4, end and bind off on last stitch. On square 5, use last stitch of square as first stitch of square 6. Squares 6 this square you will not cast on any stitches. You will be picking up 59sts along edges of square 5 and 4, then pick up one directly in the center tip of square 1, then 59sts along edge of squares 2 and 3. You now have 119sts on needle.
