CHAPTER 4, DISPLAYING AND SUMMARIZING QUANTITATIVE DATA, PART 4

SEPTEMBER 27, 2013

DO NOW
Pick 2 questions, copy them down, and answer using complete sentences.. 1) Create an example of a 5 number summary using a real-life scenario and explain what a 5 number summary is. 2) How do we find the median when given a histogram? How do we find that median when there is an even and an odd amount of numbers? 3) What is the IQR and how do we find it? (Use LOWER QUARTILE and UPPER QUARTILE in your answer.)

AIM AND HOMEWORK

Aim: How do we describe and summarize quantitative data. Homework #7: Read pages 58-68 and complete page 73-75 #15-29ODD, 33, 37, 44 QUIZ 3 ONLINE DUE SUNDAY! Make sure to check your answers at the back of the book!!!

HOMEWORK 6 ANSWERS
10)This is a unimodal distribution and it is skewed to the left. There are some outliers that lie between 34 and 36 minutes. The author might be averaging slower run times because he is feeling tired or sick that day, causing him/her to not perform at his/her peak rate. 12)(a) In this case, the mean would be larger and the median would be smaller because the mean would be skewed by the large outlier to the left. (b)This is a unimodal distribution that is highly skewed to the left. The spread is between 1 and 22 e-mails, and there is a large gap between 9 and 21 e-mails with some outliers between 21-22 e-mails.

MEAN
Feels like the center because that is where the histogram balances. To find it we add all the values together and divide them by the number of values.

MEAN AND MEDIAN?

The mean is greatly affected by outliers, especially if they are very large or very small. The median is resistant to outliers, it simply considers them as one of the large ones or one of the small ones. Think heights!

ACCORDING TO THE VIDEO

1) What is standard deviation? (Draw a picture of a high and low standard deviation.) 2) What does a low standard deviation suggest? 3) What does a high standard deviation suggest? 4) The standard deviation in the end is 0.83. Is this deviation considered low or high?

INTRO TO STANDARD DEVIATION

INTERQUARTILE RANGE
Why is the interquartile range not an accurate measure of the spread of the data?

INTERQUARTILE RANGE
Not always the most accurate measure because it only uses two quartiles of data and ignores much of the information about the variance of individual values.

STANDARD DEVIATION
Takes into account how far each value is from the mean. Like the mean, the standard deviation is only appropriate for symmetrical data. 1) Find the deviation how far each data value is away from the mean. 2) Find the variance add up squared deviations and find their average (almost.)

STANDARD DEVIATION
3) Find the standard deviation take the square root of the variance to find the standard deviation.

IN SHORT
Measures of spread help us be precise about what we dont know If data values are scattered far from the center, then these measures of spread will be__________. If all data values are the same then_____________. Measures of spread tell us how well other summaries describe the data. Thats why we ALWAYS report the spread.

TALKING ABOUT QUANTITATIVE DATA

Start by making a histogram or stem-and-leaf display. Pair the median with the IQR and the mean with the standard deviation. If the shape is skewed make sure to point out the median and IQR. If the shape is symmetrical, report the mean and standard deviation. If there are multiple modes, try to explain WHY. Report clear outliers. When reporting mean and standard deviation, report the data both WITH outliers and without. (Why?)
