Francis of Assisi
1181/1182 - 1226
St. Francis of Assisi (Italian: San Francesco d'Assisi, baptized Giovanni, born Francesco di Pietro di
Bernardone;[2]
1181/1182 October 3, 1226)[3] was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. He founded the
men's Franciscan Order, the womens Order of St. Clare, and the Third Order of Saint Francis for men and
women not able to live the lives of itinerant preachers followed by the early members of the Order of Friars
Minor or the monastic lives of the Poor Clares.[4] Though he was never ordained to the Catholic priesthood,
Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history.[4]
In 1219, he went to Egypt in an attempt to convert the Sultan to put an end to the conflict of the Crusades.[6]
By this point, the Franciscan Order had grown to such an extent that

its primitive organizational structure was no longer sufficient.

He returned to Italy to organize the Order.

Once his community was authorized by the Pope,

he withdrew increasingly from external affairs.

In 1223, Francis arranged for the first Christmas manger scene.[5]
In 1224, he received the stigmata,[5] making him the first recorded person to bear the wounds of Christ's
Passion.[7]
He died during the evening hours of October 3, 1226, while listening to a reading he had requested of Psalm
140

Psalm 140 is the 140th Psalm from the Book of Psalms. It describes putting one's trust in God while threatened
with evil.
Domine, clamavi. A prayer against sinful words, and deceitful flatterers. A psalm of David.
[1] I have cried to the, O Lord, hear me: hearken to my voice, when I cry to thee. [2] Let my prayer be directed
as incense in thy sight; the lifting up of my hands, as evening sacrifice. [3] Set a watch, O Lord, before my
mouth: and a door round about my lips. [4] Incline not my heart to evil words; to make excuses in sins. With
men that work iniquity: and I will not communicate with the choicest of them. [5] The just shall correct me in
mercy, and shall reprove me: but let not the oil of the sinner fatten my head. For my prayer also shall still be
against the things with which they are well pleased:
[5] Let not the oil of the sinner: That is, the flattery, or deceitful praise.-- Ibid.
[5] For my prayer: So far from coveting their praises, who are never well pleased but with things that are evil; I
shall continually pray to be preserved from such things as they are delighted with.
[6] Their judges falling upon the rock have been swallowed up. They shall hear my words, for they have
prevailed: [7] As when the thickness of the earth is broken up upon the ground: Our bones are scattered by the
side of hell. [8] But o to thee, O Lord, Lord, are my eyes: in thee have I put my trust, take not away my soul. [9]
Keep me from the snare, which they have laid for me, and from the stumbling blocks of them that work
iniquity. [10] The wicked shall fall in his net: I am alone until I pass.
[6] Their judges: Their rulers, or chiefs, quickly vanish and perish, like ships dashed against the rocks, and
swallowed up by the waves. Let them then hear my words, for they are powerful and will prevail; or, as it is in
the Hebrew, for they are sweet.
[10] I am alone: Singularly protected by the Almighty, until I pass all their nets and snares.

Douay-Rheims Bible

On 4 October 1943, Himmler referred explicitly to the extermination of the Jewish people during a secret SS meeting in
the city of Pozna (Posen). The following is a translation of an excerpt from a transcription of an audio recording [77] that
exists of the speech:
I also want to refer here very frankly to a very difficult matter. We can now very openly talk about this among ourselves,
and yet we will never discuss this publicly. Just as we did not hesitate on 30 June 1934, to perform our duty as ordered
and put comrades who had failed up against the wall and execute them, we also never spoke about it, nor will we ever
speak about it.

Let us thank God

that we had within us enough self-evident fortitude never to discuss it among us, and we never talked about it. Every one
of us was horrified, and yet every one clearly understood that we would do it next time, when the order is given and when
it becomes necessary. I am now referring to the evacuation of the Jews, to the extermination of the Jewish People. This is
something that is easily said: 'The Jewish People will be exterminated', says every Party member, 'this is very obvious, it
is in our program elimination of the Jews, extermination, a small matter.' And then they turn up, the upstanding 80
million Germans, and each one has his decent Jew. They say the others are all swine, but this particular one is a splendid
Jew. But none has observed it, endured it. Most of you here know what it means when 100 corpses lie next to each other,
when there are 500 or when there are 1,000. To have endured this and at the same time to have remained a decent
person with exceptions due to human weaknesses has made us tough, and is a glorious chapter that has not and will
not be spoken of. Because we know how difficult it would be for us if we still had Jews as secret saboteurs, agitators and
rabble rousers in every city, what with the bombings, with the burden and with the hardships of the war. If the Jews were
still part of the German nation, we would most likely arrive now at the state we were at in 1916 and '17 . . . .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-validating_reduction
A self-validating reduction is kind of self-fulfilling prophecy of which the result is a dramatic reduction in a
person, group, or natural being. This term was coined by Anthony Weston and used in his book Back to Earth in
1994.[1] Following Weston's work, Bob Jickling, et al. in Environmental Education, Ethics, and Action (United
Nations Education Program (UNEP), 2006) wrote:
A self-validating reduction is a self-fulfilling prophecy in which one of the main effects of the "prophecy" is to
reduce someone or something in the world. It acts to make that person or thing less than they, or it, are or could
be; or it diminishes some part of the worlds richness, depth and promise. And, this reduction in turn feeds back,
not only to justify the original "prophecy" but also to perpetuate it.[2]

Self-confidence

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confidence#Self-confidence
[edit source]

Confidence is generally described as a state of being certain either that a hypothesis or prediction is correct or
that a chosen course of action is the best or most effective.
Self-confidence is having confidence in oneself.
Arrogance or hubris in this comparison, is having unmerited confidencebelieving something or someone is
capable or correct when they are not. Overconfidence or presumptuousness is excessive belief in someone (or
something) succeeding, without any regard for failure.
Confidence can be a self-fulfilling prophecy as those without it may fail or not try because they lack it and those
with it may succeed because they have it rather than because of an innate ability.

Self-confidence [edit source]

Main article: Self-confidence
Self-confidence does not necessarily imply 'self-belief' or a belief in one's ability to succeed. For instance, one
may be inept at a particular sport or activity, but remain 'confident' in one's demeanor, simply because one does
not place a great deal of emphasis on the outcome of the activity. When one does not dwell on negative
consequences one can be more 'self-confident' because one is worrying far less about failure or the disapproval
of others following potential failure. One is then more likely to focus on the actual situation which means that
enjoyment and success in that situation is also more probable. Belief in one's abilities to perform an activity
comes through successful experience and may add to, or consolidate, a general sense of selfconfidence.[original research?] Studies have also found a link between high levels of confidence and wages.
Seemingly, those who self-report they were confident earlier in schooling, earned better wages and were
promoted more quickly over the life course.[1]

Confidence in others [edit source]

Main article: trust (social sciences)

People may have confidence in other people or forces beyond their control. For instance, one might have
confidence in the police to protect them, or might have confidence that asports team will win a
game. Faith and trust are synonyms of confidence when used in this sense.

Possible explanation [edit source]

It is suggested that the confidence bias can be explained by a noisy conversion of objective evidence
(observation) into subjective estimates (judgment), whereas noise is defined as the mixing of memories during
the storing (observing/learning) and retrieval process (remembering/judgment).[2] The informationtheoretic logic behind this explanation is very similar to the mechanism that can also lead to the conservatism
bias, and holds that we mix true and false evidence during storage and retrieval of evidence to and from our
memories. The confidence bias results because as judges we "look inside our own memory" (evaluate our
confidence) and find evidence that is more extreme than when we retrieve evidence for our judgements (which
are conservative due to mixing of extreme values during retrieval). This explanation is very simple and
straightforward, but nevertheless sufficient mechanism to generate both, overconfidence (in situations where
judges are very sure) and under confidence (in cases when judges openly state to lack the required knowledge).

Motivation and emotion
Main articles: Motivation and Emotion

Illustration of grief from Charles Darwin's book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals.
Motivation is the driving force of desire behind all deliberate actions of humans. Motivation is based on
emotionspecifically, on the search for satisfaction (positive emotional experiences), and the avoidance of
conflict. Positive and negative is defined by the individual brain state, which may be influenced by social
norms: a person may be driven to self-injury or violence because their brain is conditioned to create a positive
response to these actions. Motivation is important because it is involved in the performance of all learned
responses. Within psychology, conflict avoidance and the libido are seen to be primary motivators.
Within economics, motivation is often seen to be based on incentives; these may be financial, moral,
or coercive. Religions generally posit divine or demonic influences.
Happiness, or the state of being happy, is a human emotional condition. The definition of happiness is a
common philosophical topic. Some people might define it as the best condition that a human can havea
condition of mental and physical health. Others define it asfreedom from want and distress; consciousness of
the good order of things; assurance of one's place in the universe or society.
Emotion has a significant influence on, or can even be said to control, human behavior, though historically
many cultures and philosophers have for various reasons discouraged allowing this influence to go unchecked.
Emotional experiences perceived aspleasant, such as love, admiration, or joy, contrast with those perceived
as unpleasant, like hate, envy, or sorrow. There is often a distinction made between refined emotions that are
socially learned and survival oriented emotions, which are thought to be innate. Human exploration of emotions
as separate from other neurological phenomena is worthy of note, particularly in cultures where emotion is
considered separate from physiological state. In some cultural medical theories emotion is considered so
synonymous with certain forms of physical health that no difference is thought to exist. The Stoics believed
excessive emotion was harmful, while some Sufi teachers felt certain extreme emotions could yield a
conceptual perfection, what is often translated as ecstasy.
In modern scientific thought, certain refined emotions are considered a complex neural trait innate in a variety
of domesticated and non-domesticated mammals. These were commonly developed in reaction to superior
survival mechanisms and intelligent interaction with each other and the environment; as such, refined emotion
6

is not in all cases as discrete and separate from natural neural function as was once assumed. However, when
humans function in civilized tandem,

it has been noted

that uninhibited
acting on extreme emotion
can lead to social disorder and crime.

War
Main article: War

Japanese samurai attacking a Mongol ship in the 13th century. Warfare has been an integral aspect of all human
societies since before the rise of civilization.
War is a state of organized armed conflict between states or non-state groups. War is characterized by the use of
lethal violence between combatants and/or upon civilians to achieve military goals through force. Lesser, often
spontaneous conflicts, such as brawls, riots, revolts, and melees are not considered to be
warfare. Revolutions can be nonviolent or an organized and armed revolution which denotes a state of war.
During the 20th century,
it is estimated that
between 167 and 188 million people died as a result of war.[196]
A common definition defines war as a series of military campaigns between at least two opposing sides
involving a dispute over sovereignty, territory, resources, religion, or other issues. A war between internal
elements of a state is a civil war.
There have been a wide variety of rapidly advancing tactics throughout the history of war, ranging
from conventional war to asymmetric warfare to total war and unconventional warfare. Techniques
include hand to hand combat, the use of ranged weapons, naval warfare, and, more recently, air support.

Propaganda,

Military intelligence has often played a key role in determining victory and defeat.
which often includes information, slanted opinion and disinformation, plays a key role in maintaining unity
within a warring group, and/or sowing discord among opponents. In modern warfare, soldiers and combat
vehicles are used to control the land, warships the sea, and aircraftthe sky. These fields have also overlapped in
the forms of marines, paratroopers, naval aircraft carriers, and surface-to-air missiles, among
others. Satellites in low Earth orbit have made outer space a factor in warfare as well as it is used for detailed
intelligence gathering, however no known aggressive actions have been taken from space.

In his essay Politics and the English Language (1946), Orwell wrote about the importance of honest and clear
language and said that

vague writing can be used as a powerful tool of political manipulation.

In Nineteen Eighty-Four he described how the state controlled thought by controlling language, making certain
ideas literally unthinkable. The adjective Orwellian refers to the frightening world of Nineteen Eighty-Four, in
which the state controls thought and misinformation is widespread. Several words and phrases from Nineteen
Eighty-Four have entered popular language.
Newspeak is a simplified and obfuscatory language designed to make independent thought impossible.
Doublethink means holding two contradictory beliefs simultaneously.
The Thought Police are those who suppress all dissenting opinion. Prolefeed is homogenised, manufactured
superficial literature, film and music, used to control and indoctrinate the populace through docility. Big Brother
is a supreme dictator who watches everyone.
From Orwell's novel Animal Farm comes the sentence,
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others",
describing theoretical equality in a grossly unequal society. Orwell may have been the first to use the term cold
war, in his essay, "You and the Atom Bomb", published in Tribune, 19 October 1945. He
wrote: "We may be heading not for general breakdown but for an epoch as horribly stable as the slave empires
of antiquity.

fewer than 500 people possess more wealth than half of the earths population,
