However, theres a point in the movie when Sam develops an inkling that something is seriously wrong with his dad and confronts him. George tells Sam that hes dying of cancer, and theres this beautiful couple of lines in the movie that I have used over and over again. Sam: You knew you were dying from the start? George: Were all dying from the start. I just got moved to the head of the line. And thats where I want to go with this newsletter article. Were all dying from the start. Death looms over our shoulders every minute of every day. Its the boogey man that hides in our closet; its the monster that lives under our bed. One day, each and every one of us will face it. No matter what we do or how we change our diet, 10 out of 10 people who diet and exercise die; 10 out of 10 people who are born die. Even though its the October newsletter, November 1 is All Saints Day, and its a day that we remember the reality of death in our world. We take a day to remember those people in our lives that loved and cared for us in ways that no one else has; those people that we can no longer see or talk with. We take a day to remember what sin and death has done to us and this world. We need to be reminded that we will not live forever. We need to be reminded that life is short, and that we need to live our days as if they

Luke 12:20: But God said to him, You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself? Riddle: I am always around, but never seen. I am often ignored, but you can't avoid me. You know me well, but rarely speak of me. What am I? Answer: One of my favorite movies is Life as a House. Ive referenced it in sermons before, and Im sure Ill reference over and over again. Its a movie about a man George who is diagnosed with cancer and only given a few months to live. At the time hes at the hospital he has realized just how much he has distanced himself from those that he loves the most, including his son Sam. Faced with death knocking at his door, George forces his son Sam to spend the summer with him. Things start off rocky right from the get go. Sam is troubled, into drugs, and wants nothing to do with anyone. However, as the movie progresses, you see Sams attitude change, and a relationship form between father and son.

were our last. We need to be reminded that whatever we save up, whatever we build up, and whatever things we collect cannot come with us when we die. We need to be reminded that there are more important things in this life and world that need to be done, and tomorrow may not come for us to do them. We need to be reminded that we cannot put things off until later because later isnt guaranteed. Death is always at our door knocking, and one day it will enter in. Now heres the thing about death, I believe that our faith and what Jesus has done for us gives us an advantage over death itself. We are given this promise by God that death is not the end for us or our loved ones. So not only on All Saints Sunday do we remember that death is always peering over our shoulder, we should also be reminded that it doesnt need to bother us. Jesus bore all the things that seek to destroy you on the cross: yourself, your sin, and even your death. If Jesus rose from the grave, we will too! Nothing can destroy us nor separate us from the love of God; NOTHING! So let us be reminded that death is always near; that everything in this world will pass away. Let death be a reminder for us as to what is really important in life. But even more so, let us be reminded that death, for you and for me, is nothing to be afraid of. We can take a bold stand for what is right, we can boldly reach into the lives of others to share this hope we have, and we can boldly bear the burdens and struggles of others knowing that there is nothing to fear, not even death itself!

Strengthening Families: The Power of Financial Wellbeing

A message from Lutheran Social Services (LSS) of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan As we as a country mark the five-year anniversary of the Great Recession, thoughts turn to the health and well-being of our financial industry and the economy. Aspects of our financial system are on the upswing, but many families across the country continue to struggle with financial stressors. Even with as critical as financial stability is to our daily lives and our futures its hard to know where to turn for trusted advice and counsel. Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, in partnership with LSS of Minnesota, continues to offer free, confidential financial counseling services throughout Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. LSS offers appointments by phone 888-577-2227 or online at www.conqueryourdebt.org (and in person services are available in far northern Wisconsin; call the above number for details). This counseling is especially helpful to those seeing some distress due to credit debt and who want to get debt free using a trusted, certified counseling service. LSS financial counselors are all certified by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). ADAPTING WITH GRACE
Read Genesis 12:1-9

God is our refuge and strength Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake Psalm 46:1-2 Our plan was simple: On Monday we would hike Mount St. Helens for its spectacular views. On Tuesday, wed hike Mount Rainier to just below the snow level. But at St. Helens, the summit and our view were shrouded by clouds. On Rainier, the trail we has planned to hike was covered with 12 feet of snow. We had to adapt. In many areas of life we have to adapt, sometimes to unwelcome realities. Moving beyond asking Why? to discerning What now? requires letting God lead us into a new way of life. God never leaves us in a place where grace cannot sustain us. We live in a world that wont always go the way we expect it to go; sometimes adapting ourselves is the best, most faithful response we can make. If we trust in Gods enduring love on Jesus Christ as our faithful companion, teacher, and guide, and rely on the power of the Holy Spirit, we will have what we need to face any change.

Prayer: O Christ, faithful guide, teach us to look for you and trust your guidance when life forces us onto unexpected paths as we pray, Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation. (Luke 11:2-4) Amen

In God We Trust Read 2 Corinthians 9:6-11 A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25 (NIV) The world economy is unstable. Too many of the worlds people are in great need. But how can I be expected to help with so much uncertainty about the Thought for the Day future? My family Gods truth will drown might have needs of out the sound of fear. our own; we dont know whats ahead. Fear-filled words fly at me from every direction. They nearly down the one voice that speaks something radically different: Do not fear. As I listen to those words coming from the voice of God, I turn up the volume by opening my Bible. The words of scripture tell us we should not be hardhearted or tightfisted with the poor (Deut. 15:7); the one who gives to the poor will lack nothing (Prov. 28:27); and Jesus says that as we give, it will be given back, overflowing (Luke 6:38). In 1 Kings, Elijah asks a widow for a bit of bread. She has only a handful of flour and a little oil, but she gives it to the prophet. From then until Elijah leaves, her jars of oil and flour never run out. Whom will I believe? Instead of the TV or newspaper, I choose to believe in Gods promises. Prayer: Dear Lord, we want to be generous in giving even if things around us seem uncertain. Help us believe your voice of truth and not be afraid. Amen Robin J. The Poor and Neglected Almighty and merciful God, we call to mind before You all those whom it would be easy to forget: the homeless, the destitute, the sick, the aged, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to heal those who are broken in body and spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant this, Father, for the love of Your Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced Gods love through the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child. Samaritans Purse works with local churches and ministry partners to deliver the gifts and share the life-changing Good News of Jesus Christ.

Fortune Lake Fall FestSaturday, October 5, Fortune Lake Camp invites you to celebrate the season at Fall Fest. Festivities begin at 9:30a.m. CT with a hearty buffet brunch served in the camp dining hall, a country market of home-baked breads and pies, and quilt viewing in the chapel/ auditorium. The festivals main event, the Quilt and Fine Art Auction, begins at 11:00. Juried quilts, wall hangings, woodcraft, artwork, jewelry, and baskets are among the auction items. ** A bus to attend the Fall Festival and Quilt Auction will leave Messiah Lutheran Church at 8:30am with additional pick-ups at Immanuel Lutheran in Negaunee and Bethany Lutheran in Republic.
