Musical stories will come to life

in orchestra’s October concert


The Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra will present a rich collection of great music that tells great stories, in a
concert set for Sunday, Oct. 29.

The 2 p.m. afternoon concert will be held at the Northfield Middle School Auditorium and is titled “Tell Me a
Story.” Featured soloist with the CVRO will be Mike Legvold, Northfield. Legvold will perform the tuba solo in the
classic children’s tale Tubby the Tuba. George Kleinsinger composed the music for Tubby the Tuba in 1946. He
collaborated with Paul Tripp, who wrote the story.

Also featured in the program will be Steve Swanson, Northfield, who will narrate the much-loved musical story of
Peter and the Wolf by Prokofieff.

Other selections in the concert will include Richard Wagner’s “Prelude to the Opera Die Meistersinger Zu Nurnberg”
and the lively Lieutenant Kije Suite Symphonique by Prokofieff. The orchestra will also perform the
evocativemusic of “The Moldau” from My Country by Smetana, along with the musical story of the fiery Carmen,
from “Carmen Suite” by Bizet.

Admission to the concert will be free to children and students. Tickets for adults are $5 and will be sold at the door
prior to the concert.

Community sponsors for the Oct. 29 concert include Community Resource Bank and College City Sertoma, both of
Northfield.

The CVRO is a part of the community arts program of the Northfield Arts Guild and presents 5 or 6 concerts each
year. Musicians include players from towns throughout the Cannon Valley area and represent a wide range of
professional people whose amateur love is playing orchestral music. The CVRO has performed concerts on
repeated occasions in most of the Cannon Valley communities in additional to Northfield. Rehearsal are held in

An exciting CVRO Season

The Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra, conducted by Paul Niemisto, will present four concert programs for the
2006 -2007 season. For more specific details on the season please log on to www.cvrorchestra.org

The first presentation will be entitled ”Tell Me A Story” and will be performed at the New Northfield Middle School
Auditorium on Sunday, October 29th at 3:00 P.M. This concert is especially designed for family audiences
and will be educational and entertaining for all ages. Listening through a cavalcade of orchestral music we will
learn how music is often inspired by good stories. Admission is $5.00 for adults, children free.
No advance sales.

On December 16 and 17th the CVRO will return for the third season to collaborate with the Continental Ballet
in two performances of Tchaikowsky’s immortal Nutcracker Ballet (“La Casse Noisette”). These performances will
take place at Red Wing’s Historic Sheldon Theatre, a veritable replica of the house where the Nutcracker was first
performed about a century ago. In 2005, the production featured dance artists for St. Petersburg, Russia, in the
solo roles. Performances are on Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 3:00. For more ticket information contact the

On Sunday. March 11, the CVRO will offer a chamber orchestra concert at the Bethel Lutheran Church, 1050
Cedar Ave., beginning at 7:00 P.M. This concert will feature a performance of Spanish composer Joachim Rodrigo’
s very famous “Fantasia para un gentilhombre” with virtuoso Northfield guitarist Kim Bloom. Also on the program
with be a regional premier performance of a new cantata by John Rutter, with the collaboration of the Hymnus
Choir of New Prague (http://www.hymnus.us), directed by Brian Carson. Admission is $5.00 for adults, children
free. No advance sales.
On Saturday evening, May 19, 7:30 P.M., the Cannon Valley Regional will return to the Sheldon in Red Wing
to perform as a part of their season’s concert series. This event, entitled “Voices of Spring” will feature seasonal
repertoire with an emphasis on France. In addition to music of Debussy, Ravel, and Bizet, the concert will include a
