Product Handling And Storage A. Handling Handle units with care to avoid chipping and breaking. B. Storage Store materials on platform under weatherproof cover.

Part 2 - Products 2.01 Materials A. Concrete Masonry Units 1. B. Exterior Grade N-II Non-Fire-Rated Block: ASTM C90.

Miscellaneous Concrete Masonry Units 1. Other special shapes: ASTM C90, grade and aggregate to match that of adjacent masonry.

Part 3 - Execution 3.01 Preparatory Work A. Coordination Consult other trades and provisions to permit installation of their work to avoid cutting and patching. Before closing up any pipe chase, duct chase or similar inaccessible spaces, remove all rubbish and sweep out area to be enclosed. B. Protection Continuously protect base of masonry wall at grade with straw, sand or plastic sheets. Protect masonry surface with draped plastic sheets where concrete slabs are screeded over walls. 3.02 Laying Concrete Masonry Units A. General Lay units plumb and true to line, with level horizontal joints. Keep the open space at expansion and control joints free of mortar by using a continuous wood or metal strip set temporarily in walls. Exercise care to prevent mortar from falling into open space of cavity wall construction. If necessary to stopoff a horizontal run of masonry, rack back half (one full) block length in each course. Toothing not permitted. When work is resumed, remove loose units and clean contact surface of all mortar and debris. Do not wet units prior to

However, in drying weather brush a small amount of water on contact surfaces to obtain a good band. Exercise care in laying up units so that anchors, reinforcement and other materials specified elsewhere will be built in as the work progresses. Reinforce and anchor masonry in accordance with these specifications, the drawing and the requirement of the applicable building codes. Provide solid bearing in walls directly under structural steel members. Adequately brace walls against displacement.

Bond Lay units in a running bond. Where units are laid in a running bond, bond each course of all units at corners in a masonry bond.

C.

Joint Work Lay units with full mortar coverage on horizontal and vertical face shells. Bed webs in first course of all walls. Make joints uniform, approximately 9.5 mm (0.375 in.) thick. When finished work will be exposed to view, cut joints flush and tool when thumb print hard to form a slightly concave joint. When tooling joints, use sufficient pressure to press the mortar against both sides of the joints which will not be exposed to view. Point up all holes in mortar; cut out defective joints and re-point.

3.03

Completed Work A. Protection Keep top of walls covered with non-staining waterproof coverings when work is not in progress. Covering shall overhang at least 610 mm (2 ft.) on each side of the wall. Securely anchor covering. B. Cleaning Clean exposed masonry of all stains and loose mortar by frequently brushing surface with a masons brush. Do not wet concrete masonry units mortar has thoroughly set.
