Teaching of Grammar Week 4 (12th July 2012) Activity 2: Study the KBSR/KSSR syllabus.

. Choose two topics and state the grammar items you would teach. Justify your selection.

English (Sk) Year 4 1. Topic 1 (What do you like?) Grammar item : Noun Proper nouns are special names of people, countries, cities, rivers, mountains, streets, places, buildings, months and days.

For example, Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysians, Malay, the Alps, Mount Fuji, the Great Wall (landmarks), The Twin Towers.

Justification: This topic involves lots of nouns, and teacher can teach proper nouns and common nouns to the pupils. Activity A: 1. Pupils introduce each other on the first day of class and their names and place they came from (address), are some of the examples of proper nouns. 2. While introducing each other teacher can emphasize on the use of proper nouns in daily communication.

E.g.

Good morning, my name is __________. I come from ______, ________.

Activity B: Underline the proper nouns in the sentences. Then write the proper nouns in the chart. A. The Golden Goose is an interesting storybook. B. My friend Alice is the top girl in my class. C. Have you read the story of Pinocchio? D. James is a student at Winton Primary School. E. Tourists like to go to Kings Road to shop. F. I saw the movie The Lion King on Saturday. G. We celebrate Mothers Day next month. H. Her birthday falls on Christmas Day. I. Dr Lee works in York Hospital. J. We are going to the National Zoo. K. Her birthday falls on Christmas Day.

Grammar item : Pronoun Pronouns are used to replace names of people and things. Examples: He, She, It , They , We and I. Focused skill: Reading Activity: Read this story about three bears Once upon a time there were three bears. They lived in a cottage in the forest. First there was Father Bear. He was a great big bear. Then there was Mother Bear. She was a medium-sized bear. And then there was Baby bear. He was a tiny- little bear. One morning Mother Bear made porridge as usual and poured it into three bowls. But as the porridge was too hot to eat, Mother Bear, Father Bear and Baby Bear left their bowls to cool and went for a walk.

2. Topic 2 (Looking good) Grammar item : Verb Justification : In this topic, pupils use verbs to state an action of keeping themselves clean. For example, comb, bathe, wash, brush. These actions describe on how to keep themselves clean. At the same time, teacher can teach on the simple present tense to show habitual actions.

Grammar item : Articles Justification ; Teacher can teach articles a , an and the, and singular and plural countable nouns. For example, Hat hats Match matches Thief thieves Lorry lorries

Part One 1. Divides the class into pairs 2. Give each pair a set of article cards and a set of food cards Examples, apple, ice-cream, onion, egg, carrot, chicken, pear and lettuce 3. Pupils are required to pair up the article and food in their group. 4. Pairs with the most card at the end is the winner.

Part Two- The objective is to guess the foods in their partners fridge. 1. Pupil A will get a picture (fridge). He will then draw a few pictures in the fridge. 2. Pupil B should select five foods from the food cards and draw them in the fridge. They should not tell their partner which they have chosen. 3. Pupils should then try to guess what is in their partners fridge. E.g. Is there a/an in the fridge? 4. If pupil B uses correct article, he/she will be awarded one point. For example, he says Is there an apple in the fridge?
