EN/IEC60870-5-101/103/104 Standard Utility Protocol with Configuration Tool

We have developed the EN/IEC60870-5-101/104 standardised Configuration Tool which is widely used within the electricity and water/wastewater industries. Brodersen has enhanced this by also adapting the NUC (Norwegian User Convention) specifications. By using this tool, the configuration of the RTU32 is greatly simplified, thus saving a considerable number of configuration and programming hours.

The Brodersen RTU32 RTU and PowerPLC offers the functionality and performance of a traditional RTU, PLC, IPC and Data Concentrator in one. It supports IEC61131-3 programming on WinCE 5.0 platform and offers real time process communication with leading edge telemetry functionality.

SNMP Protocol opens the way into IT Network administration and reduces downtime
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is the common language of network monitoring and used for telecommunications, facility and asset monitoring applications. The protocol allows IT Network Administration staff to easily monitor the RTUs in big networks. An even more powerful feature of the protocol is to use the RTU to monitor the network by sending/receiving SNMP network alarms. This is a feature often used by network facility managers.

Configuration Web Browser

Setting up the RTU32 is very easy. General settings, as well as network and SNMP settings, are configured via the Ethernet network interface either directly or remotely using a standard Web Browser. The Ethernet TCP/IP interface offers remote access to any RTU32 connected to the network.

Integrated I/O and UPS

The RTU32 features integrated I/O: 16DI, 4RO, 4AI, 2AO. Analogue IOs are 14bit with 0-16383 resolution. Supports up to 32 I/O expansion modules and over 1000 physical I/Os. Power supply options include 115-230VAC with optional 12V UPS battery/charger, as well as 24-48VDC with 12VDC external supply.

Powerful CPU and RTOS Platform

A powerful 32-bit processor with large memory capacity and real-time WinCE 5.0 operating system ensures fast application processing, communication and data storage. Brodersens RTU32 provides control capabilities that were previously only available in very large PLCs.

Embedded Web Server/HMI

The embedded Web Server/HMI provided on the RTU is not only used to configure the RTU but can also be used to display its current state using standard graphical symbols provided by the STRATON Workbench. These include LED, slider, meter, bar graph and pie charts just to name a few. Once these symbols are linked to the appropriate variables and the web pages are built via the STRATON Workbench, the web pages can be dynamically viewed via a simple WebHMI browser.

Redundancy and event driven communication

RTU32 PLC in redundancy configuration is only a mouse click away - and is standatd feature is all versions. The Binding (or alternatively Dual Binding) Protocol and the two Ethernet ports of the RTU32 provide the ability to obtain fast and event based redundancy communication for applications that require high levels of system reliability. We take advantage of todays network technology by employing TCP/IP, UDP and event driven communication to optimise network bandwidth. This feature reduces network loading and increases data integrity for both centralised and distributed configurations.

The communication to the RTU870 uses on the utility protocol EN/IEN608705-101 which is based on a master/slave principle where a main station (master) can communicate with a large number of RTU870s (slaves). A typical installation consists of an RTU870 Compact Outstation connected to meters (flow, electricity, etc.), sensors, electricity switching devices or other utility devices. The RTU870 communicates with a larger outstation or main station via serial interface or modem (Leased line V23, dial-up connection via PSTN or GSM). The communication protocol settings in each case is pre-defined at the design of the application, partly defined in the protocol interoperability settings. At the central main station, all the data (I/O status, alarms, counter values, meter data, etc.) are used to provide the user with the nessesary information. The real time stamping on the data given by the RTU870 ensures useful and consistent data are logged. Locally the RTU870 handles simple tasking such as monitoring temperature levels, safe shut down functions etc. which can work independently of the main station or other sub-stations.

Telemetry / Remote Data Logging

CONCEPT
Brodersen RTU RTU-COM allows you to convey plant condition in terms of process signals, logged data, intelligent alarms, SMS messages etc. from remote/isolated sites to a central control room (PC/Server) via the telephone network (PSTN) or by mobile telephone network (GSM, GPRS etc.). The remote site could be just a few kilometres away or in another country, or indeed, another continent. It does not matter - telemetry can span the globe. Telemetry can be just as effective if the remote site is only a couple of hundred metres away, across a road or railway line. With its 480 Kbytes memory, the RTU-COM Micro Outstation offers data logging facility and real-time clock for time stamping of data. Its user-friendly software and low cost now makes it an ideal choice for many applications within water, gas, railways, electricity, traffic and environmental telemetry systems. The extended SMS functionality provided with the RTU-COM enables your mobile phone or email server be used to receive alarm messages. Indeed, even control function can be performed via SMS with a simple syntax. Only your imagination limits the use of the RTU-COM.

Water Supply/Treatment.

RTUCOM

RTU with integrated modem

In this application, the RTU-COM is monitoring an unmanned pumping station which pumps ground water from boreholes to the treatment plant. Data, such as the amount of water pumped, running time of pumps, condition of filters etc., can all be monitored and logged. All data can be transferred to the control centre and, in the event of a failure, the RTU-COM will contact the PC and report the problem. In addition it can send the local service engineer an alarm SMS message, and damage control is quickly established. Plant Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis - Remote Service Engineer. A piece of plant can be fitted with an RTU-COM to monitor and log its performance. In the event of a fault, a diagnosis can often be made by connection to the RTU-COM, without the need of a service engineer to attend the site. Such applications using the RTU-COM include filtration plants, stand-by generators and waste water treatment. Series 4200 RTUCOM with Built-in Modem The RTUCOM is a very compact RTU with built-in PSTN or GSM Modem. This is an ideal RTU for simple, remote monitoring of assets and facilities. Telemetry/Remote data logging

CONCEPT
The RTU8 is designed specifically for low cost remote monitoring and control applications. Although the DIN-rail mountable unit only measures 80 (H) x 162 (W) x 62 (D), it provides all the RTU functions that you will expect from a general purpose RTU and a lot more... Process signals: - On board I/O options - 16DI/8DO/4AI, 16DIO, 32DI, 8DI/4AI, or 8DIO. - I/O expansion - up to 31 plug n play I/O expansion modules: - digital input (24V or 48V DC). - digital output - PNP, relay or AC light control (230 VAC, 42VAC or 1015VAC). - analogue output - voltage or current. - analogue input (V, I, PT100, PT-500, PT-1000, or thermocouple J/K/R/S/T). - counter input. - All I/Os are isolated. IEC1131-3 application programming environment. Flexible communication: - Bearers - PSTN, GPRS, GSM, satellite, leased line, radio or Ethernet. - Open protocols - Modbus RTU, IEC-60870-101 or TCP/IP. - 2nd serial port gateway option (eg Modbus RTU Master/slave). - SMS messaging via GSM or GPRS modems. 480 KB of RAM for data logging. PC Data Collection Utility (DDE Server and DLL APIs) available that interfaces to industry standard SCADA systems such as zenOn, InTouch, Factory Link, Labview and Fix32. Extensive AC/DC power options.

Energy Management The deregulation of the utilities industry has created many opportunities for remote metering and demand management. Sophisticated systems are being implemented to monitor and control electicity consumption. This has resulted in the RTU8 being employed in many metering applications. Traffic and Signal Management As traffic grows in major cities all around the world, it is increasingly important to be able to detect traffic light failures remotely and efficiently to avoid gridlock situations. The RTU-8 is being used in conjunction with the traffic light controllers to ensure faulty traffic lights are reported within seconds to the control rooms. Similar applications are also found in railway signalling equipment. This ranges from point heating to light failure and level crossings. Supply Chain Management Although it has always been possible to operate Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) schemes in bulk raw materials supply (eg fuel, sugar, liquid yeast, cement, and plastic granules), it was only recently that these schemes have begun to prosper. This is partly due to: - purchasers seeking to establish a closer relationship with their suppliers - the need for real-time demand data to ensure a steady and timely supply of goods - the dramatic fall in the pay back period for telemetry schemes in the last few years. With the Brodersen telemetry system, the re-ordering level (or the level of safety inventory) can be set by the customer and used by the supplier to trigger an automatic just in time replenishment of stock. Suppliers benefit from having the real time consumption data that their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system can use to plan their production. RTU8 Versions/Ordering Codes

What is SNMP?
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is the most common protocol used by network management systems to communicate with network elements. For this to work, the network element must be equipped with an SNMP agent. Successful network management is achieved by monitoring network events and reading and writing predefined values to the network elements (for instance BC6000 SNMP Alarm Unit, routers, switches etc.)

RTU32/BC6000

SNMP Alarm and Control Unit

How does SNMP work?

SNMP exchanges network information through messages. The SNMP protocol is UDP based and each message consists of a version identifier, an SNMP community name, and a PDU (protocol data unit). PDUs provide two fundamental actions, GET a variable and SET a variable. SNMP messages may be initiated by either the network management system (NMS) or by the network element. An SNMP TRAP is a message (signal or alarm) which is initiated by a network element and sent (pushed) to the network management system. For example, a router could send a message if one of its redundant power supplies fails or a TRAP is sent when a station comes back online after a power failure. The end device acts as a master. Traps are generally triggered by a specific event. An SNMP GET (Read) is a message which is initiated by the network management system when it wants to retrieve some data from a network element. A user issuing a GET is actually reading information from the networked device. The end device is the slave. For example, the network management system might query a router for the utilisation on a WAN link every 5 minutes. It could then create charts and graphs from that data, or it could warn the operator when the link was over-utilised. An SNMP SET (Write) is a message which is initiated by the NMS when it wants to change data on a network element. A user issuing a write will send information to be written to a networked device. The end device is the slave. For example, the NMS may wish to alter a static route on a router, or a user tells a device to disable a network interface.

The analogue inputs send traps for 2 thresholds. The SNMP Manager can retrieve live actual readings from analogue inputs by issuing Get and GetNext commands. Set commands issued to the RTU32/BC6000 will activate the control output relays, for turning on-site equipment on and off, locking and unlocking doors etc. The RTU32/BC6000 SNMP can report up to 4 SNMP managers at different IP addresses simultaneously, which makes it easy for filtering alarms to different departments. As the unit is using OS WinCE, the basic Microsoft WinCE agent provides you with additional device network information and statistics.

Flexible I/O
The RTU32/BC6000 offers flexible I/O but as standard comes with 16 alarm inputs, 4 analogue inputs, 2 Analogue outputs and 4 control output relays enough to provide solid alarm coverage for telecommunication equipment, power supplies, environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) and door/window alarms etc. Expansion modules can be added if the site is bigger or you need to monitor more. Up to 5 expansion units can be daisy chained off a base RTU32/BC6000 giving numerous I/O options to suit your requirements.

Configuration for SNMP Alarm Unit

RTU32/BC6000 SNMP offers you full flexibility in configuration - and you can obtain almost any special SNMP function handling for TRAPs, Get/GetNext Set functions, and additional I/O etc. If you want special configuration you can do it with a PC programming tool - or we can do it for you based on your requirements. Alternatively you can use the simple standard configuration via the built-in WebServer, where all necessary parameters for a simple SNMP alarm module can be configured. The RTU32/BC6000 SNMP concentrates a lof of functions into just one unit, making it a valuable and cost effective choice for you SNMP remote alarm monitoring. Series 6000 - BC6000 SNMP Alarm Unit

What is a MIB?
The MIB (Management Information Base), is a collection of variables which is shared between the NMS and the network element. The MIB is extensible, which means that manufacturers can add new variables to the MIB. These new MIB definitions must be added both to the network element and to the network management system. A MIB is a file, written in a specific language that lists variables. It assigns each variable a name, a number and a set of permissions. It may also provide a description of what the variable is supposed to represent.

What is an agent?
An SNMP agent is a program which is linked to a port and awaits requests from SNMP management software. Upon receiving a request, it processes the request, collects the requested information and/or performs the requested operations and returns the information to the sender.

2 3

What is a manager?
For SNMP to be useful, an NMS (Network Management System) must be present. The NMS collects data from the remote devices (agents) and may provide certain actions based on the information received. There are many NMSs available such as HP Open View.

RTU32/BC6000 SNMP Agent

As an SNMP agent, the RTU32/BC6000s primary role is to mediate remote site alarms to SNMP traps and forward them to an SNMP manager. It is easy to filter out any unimportant data as you can select to not send a trap for each individual alarm, although of course all inputs can be mediated to SNMP traps.
