Lesson 1 Function Table

Instructional Focus: Lessons will actively involve students in their learning process through increased teacher use of appropriately challenging and engaging lesson design.

Curriculum Standards Addressed:

Goal 5: The learner will understand and use linear relations and functions. 5.01: Develop an understanding of function. a. Translate among verbal, tabular, graphic, and algebraic representations of functions. What will students KNOW as a result of this lesson? 1. The meaning of: a. Function b. Function table c. Domain d. Range e. Input f. Output g. Independent variable h. Dependent variable i. Coefficient j. Equation 2. The difference between an independent and dependent variable are 3. The difference between domain and range What SKILLS will students develop during this lesson? What will they be able to DO? 1. How to complete a function table 2. How to identify a function 3. How to identify the independent and dependent variable

Materials:
Student Notebooks for note taking Work Sheet Weekly Essential Sheets Weekly Homework Sheet EQ: How do I create a function table?

Opening Activity: ( 5 - 10 minutes)

Warm-up: The Math Teachers Problem-A-Day 1.66 #3 Review Warm-up Review homework

Instructional Activities: (40 minutes)

Note Taking: Words that will be identified: a. Function b. Function table c. Domain d. Range e. Input f. Output g. Independent variable h. Dependent variable Whole class practice: Handout Function table WS have students try to fill out the work sheet in with help from other students at their table. (5 minutes) Review WS answers as a class have students add the sheet to their notebook. It should be pasted in so it becomes part of their notes.

Closing Activity: (5 10 minutes)

Ticket out the door 1. f(4) if f(x) = x - 6 2. make a function table for f(x) = 8 x, {x: x = -2, -1, 0, 1, 2} Homework: HW Sheet Weekly Essentials (Due Friday)

Assessment Tools and/or Processes for this lesson:

Observation of students as they complete the worksheet will help determine which students have an understanding of the meaning of: function, function table, domain, range, input, output, independent variable and dependent variable. Students who are not able to determine the values for the x and y columns of the function table or are not able to properly graph the functions will not grasped the concepts of this lesson. As we review of the worksheet, asking probing questions will help determine the students understanding of difference between dependent and independent variables and domain and range. We will review the answers of the worksheet and students will be encouraged to ask questions where they are confused.

Evaluating the ticket out the door will show whether students have grasped the concepts of the creating a function table and substituting values into a function. It will help to identify where students may still have misunderstandings.
