Become the recognized cultural hub and authority for Chicago and the surrounding region for cultural enrichment through performing arts, architecture, art, and design while being widely renowned for excellence in creative programming, education, collaboration, responsiveness and leadership development of the arts, and as a center for professional and emerging talent.

C o n c e p t
Exploiting what is actually there and amalgamating those qualities with a new structure that cont a i n s a l l f l e d g i n g u n i v e r s i t y, s t u d e n t , a n d c o m m u n a l n e e d s w h i l e a d d i t i o n a l l y p r o m o t i n g i n t e r a c tion. The facility is comprised of components which can be programmed in a variety of ways for e i t h e r p r i v a t e o r p u b l i c f u n c t i o n s . T h e r e s u l t i n g s t r u c t u r e p r o m o t e s i n t e r a c t i o n b e t w e e n t h e c i t y s various communities at all levels of the urban surround. The envelope of the building is made of glass which opens up in key locations for optimal sunlight and to defend prevailing winds. The iconic college facility is re-envisioned as a horizotal layering embedded seamlessly into the campus to promote circulation in the interior and exterior through outlined central nodes. Programming for primary/large spaces is extended in square fotage to allow appropriate facility usage.

Like our creative intuition,


R e s u l t i n g F a c i l i t y

The decision is to not rid the site of the buildi n g c o m p l e t e l y, b u t f i n d a w a y t o p r e s e r v e something.

Three Central locations were chosen as the basis of the building.

The variating columns (16 and 10) are preserved from the Architecture building.

The resulting floors include a ramping system is formed to accomodate alternating levels.

With the addition of secondary programs, the dorms that were removed are re-inserted back in.

Following the addition of the Performing Arts arm, the facility is formed.

C a s t i n d e s p a i r. This dreaded cold season, Is long past due. Revitalize in spring, Flourishing new Leaves thriving, A positive change. Prospering foliage, The best nature can arrange. Not unlike this successful season. The birth of an idea, Needs no concrete reason.
