The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1886 to 1889 was one of the last major European expeditions into the interior of Africa in the nineteenth century, ostensibly to the relief of Emin Pasha, General Charles Gordons besieged governor of Equatoria, threatened by Mahdist forces. Led by Henry Morton Stanley, the expedition came to be both celebrated, for its ambition in crossing darkest Africa, and notorious, for the bloodshed and death left in its wake. Good. No jackets. Volume one includes folding map of the expedition in rear pocket, volume two lacks map. An extensive survey of many varieties of cherries grown in New York, including according to the preface an historical account of cultivated cherries, the botany of this fruit, a statement of its present economic status in America, descriptions of all known varieties of cherries, the synonymy and bibliography of the species and varieties, and biographical sketches of the persons who have contributed materially to cherry culture in America. Includes stunning full color plates depicting numerous types of cherries. Very good. No jacket. Boards a bit rubbed (common with this title), pencil name on front endpaper. $125 6. [American History] Paltsits, Victor Hugo Minutes of the Commissioners for Detecting and Defeating Conspiracies in the State of New York, in Three Volumes: 1778-1779; 1780-1781 The State of New York, Albany, 1909. 4to. Volumes one and two paginated continuously - 836 pp.; index volume 268 pp. A fascinating collection of material related to an organization founded after the American Revolution to defend against domestic foes based on dramatic conflict between whigs and tories. These records show that a sophisticated intelligence community existed to defend the interests of the United States and disrupt the efforts of those plotting against them. The index volume is helpful for locating specific individuals suspected of conspiracy, or particular locations or incidents that the commissioners investigated. Includes a number of high quality facsimiles of original documents related to investigations. Probably the first organization under the Articles of Confederation created for counterintelligence purposes was the Committee for Detecting and Defeating Conspiracies, later the Commission. It was made up of a series of groups established in New York between June 1776 and January 1778 to collect intelligence,

apprehend British spies and couriers, and examine suspected British sympathizers. In effect, it was created a secret service which had the power to arrest, to convict, to grant bail or parole, and to imprison or to deport. A company of militia was placed under its command. The Committee heard over 500 cases involving disloyalty and subversion. John Jay has been called the first chief of American counterintelligence because of his role in the Committee. Very good. A variant of the first edition exists without the gilt edge, and while no priority between the two is established, it is our opinion that the gilt version is more desirable from an aesthetic standpoint. Color frontispiece and plates (32), line drawings and diagrams in text (37). A tour of numerous important English and Scottish castles, with a description of the development of fortifications from their crude beginnings in simple strengthening of environmental defenses and hill-tops, to the motte and bailey style, to various designs of keeps and fortified residences. Also includes a chapter on siege and defense of castles in the medieval era. Illustrations include views of some of the most stunning and important castles in British history. Not in Floyd. First edition (a paperback original). xx, 216 pp. Claude Bragdon (1866-1946) was a first-generation modernist architect, as well as an illustrator, critic, theorist and theater designer. Bragdon practiced architecture in Rochester, New York throughout the Progressive Era. Although his masterpiece, the New York Central Railroad Station, was demolished in the 1960s-70s, the First Universalist Church, the Bevier Memorial Building, the Peterborough Bridge near Toronto, and nearly 100 residences remain today. A prolific and influential writer, Bragdon published more than twenty books and hundreds of articles. He was nationally known for his graphic art, his writing on the fourth dimension, his Song & Light Festivals of 1915-1918, and his role in theaters New Stagecraft. He had technical and artistic expertise in many disciplines, making it difficult to categorize his work into a specific stylistic trend. Bragdons work as an early modernist is important both in its own right and as a key to other 20th Century architects work. The first American edition was printed in Boston by James Osgood - this edition is now quite scarce because nearly all copies were lost in a warehouse fire. This second American edition came in several variants, all in green cloth with the word Sea pluralized in the title, and with the image of Captain Nemo (several Osgood bindings have a jellyfish instead). Complete in two hardcover volumes. liii, 321; 361 pp. Original cloth boards, half coral half brown, gilt and brown stamped decorations and titles, top edges gilt, endpapers are laid paper. Issued in brown cloth jackets with gilt stamped titles. Includes finely done engravings from etchings by Adolphe Lalauze and photographs. Edited by Andrew Lang with an extensive introduction, notes, and glossary. Ivanhoe is a novel by Sir Walter Scott. It was written in 1819, and is set in 12th-century England, and is an example of historical fiction. Ivanhoe is sometimes credited for increasing interest in Romanticism and Medievalism; John Henry Newman claimed that Scott had first turned mens minds in the direction of the middle ages, while Carlyle and Ruskin made similar claims to Scotts overwhelming influence over the revival based primarily on the publication of this novel. Near fine. Both volumes include original cloth jackets. A couple pages unopened. An exceptional example of a fine edition of this title. $175
