Menstrual headache

This is a condition with

headache before, during, or after
the menstrual period due to
blood deficiency, stagnant blood,
and fire pathogen in the liver.

Premenstrual tension in modern
medicine is same as this disease
and can be treated by the
following methods.
Applications of hand therapy:

Massage therapy:

Location: Reproductive, kidney, and head areas, uterus reflective point, Mingmen
point, Hegu (LI 4), Shaoze (Sl l), Qiangu (SI 2), Houxi (SI 3), Yemen (TE 2) and
various head reflective points.

Method of manipulation: Both hands are rubbed to produce a hot sensation. Pushing
and grinding maneuvers applied at reproductive, kidney, and head areas;
digit-pressing maneuver at uterus reflective point, Mingmen point, Hegu (LI 4),
Shaoze (SI 1), Qiangu (Sl 2), Houxi (Sl 3), Yemen (TE 2) and various head reflective
points.

Acupuncture therapy:

At regular and extra acupoints:

Location: Hegu (LI 4) and Houxi (Sl 3) acupoints.

Method of manipulation: The medium stimulation is applied and the needles are
retained for 30 minutes.

At reflective areas:

Location: Head area corresponding to the location of headache in dorsal and palmar
reflective areas.

Method of manipulation: The needle is shallowly inserted and removed right after the
twisting, lifting, and thrusting stimulation.

At acupoints beside the second metacarpal bone:

Location: Head acupoint and liver acupoint.

Method of manipulation: The needles are inserted for 3.3 cm and retained for 20
minutes.

Hand bath:

Recipe: Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici) 30 g, Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi) 20 g,
Wuzhuyu (Evodia) 20 g, Huajiao (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli) 6 g, and fresh stalks of
green onion 30 g.

Function: To disperse stagnation of liver qi, promote blood circulation, and stop pain.
Method of manipulation: A hot decoction of the above herbs is used to steam and
wash both hands and head for 20 minutes, two to three times a day.
