Advent & Christmas | 2013

Planning Checklist for Advent and Christmas With Advent, the church begins a new year, and the year 20132014 begins a new
three-year cycle through the lectionary with year A, the year of Matthew. Order worship planning resources (see p. 29) and preaching commentaries (see p. 34) to help leaders prepare well for the upcoming Sundays and seasons. Order calendars for altar guilds, worship committees, and worshipers to help them connect with the rhythms of the churchs year (see pp. 3031).

Reformation Sunday, Pentecost, welcoming children and adults as new

membersthere are a number of Sundays and occasions in the church year when a presentation of the Bible can occur in worship. Determine who from the congregation will lead the presentation, then choose and order from our selection of Bibles for all ages (see p. 16). A Bible with a members name imprinted makes the occasion even more memorable for a gift that lasts a lifetime.

In honor of Veterans Day (U.S.) and Remembrance Day (Canada) November 11,
consider including Affirmation of Baptism for Returning Veterans from Prayer Book for the Armed Services (see p. 19) in worship on November 10, or any Sunday in November.

Devotions and studies for individual or group use allow opportunities to open
scripture, look at it through different lenses, and join conversations around the Bible. See pages 1011 and 2125 for devotional offerings for Advent, Lent, and the church year.

Order candles and greens for the Advent wreath. Perhaps more than one wreath will
be desired for your congregation if Sunday school students and other groups gather for worship during the season in locations other than the sanctuary (see p. 5).

If handheld candles are used for worship on Christmas Eve, determine how many
candles and holders can be used from previous seasons, and how many new candles and holders will be needed (see p. 5).

Publicize Christmas services, or other unique seasonal Advent and Christmas

services (e.g., Lessons and Carols, The Great O Antiphons, Evening Prayer), in local newspapers and in other media (see p. 12 for two new services for Advent).

Design service folders for Christmas worship that guests will be able to follow
easily, including specific instructions for communion distribution. Order seasonal bulletin covers if needed for services on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day (see p. 6).

Determine communion distribution procedure for services with large numbers

of communicants, and make sure sufficient communion elements and communionware are available (see p. 37).

Make arrangements for adequate seating, along with additional worship books and
service folders for larger assemblies on Christmas Eve. If you hold a pre-service of Christmas carols, have enough copies of carol sheets in anticipation of a large assembly with worship guests (see p. 14).

Cathedral Candles
Church Advent Wreath Candles
One of the best-known customs for the season is the Advent wreath. The wreath and winter candle-lighting in the midst of growing darkness strengthen some of the Advent images found in the Bible. The unbroken circle of greens is clearly an image of everlasting life, a victory wreath, the crown of Christ, or the wheel of time itself. Christians use the wreath as a sign that Christ reaches into our time to lead us to the light of everlasting life. The four candles mark the progress of the four weeks of Advent and the growth of light. Cathedrals Church Advent Wreath Candles fit standard 1 sockets. Choose from multiple heights and five color combinations.

Augsburg Organ Library

The Augsburg Organ Library is a multi-volume collection that reflects the twentieth century renewal of the organ and its music. The compositions included in this series come from a variety of cultural and religious traditions. Music from England, Belgium, France, Germany, Scandinavia, and North America forms the basis of the library. As such, the variety of notational traditions and organ nomenclature has been retained in order to reflect original sources and performance practices. The result is a rich compendium of organ music that serves as a basic performing library for church organists. A wide range of selections has been carefully chosen with special focus placed on the seasons of the church year, including Advent and Christmas. Music that primarily supports the song of the worshiping assembly is included; repertoire designed solely for concert or recital has been avoided. The majority of compositions are based on commonly used hymn tunes that are widely known in English-speaking countries. Paperback (12" x 9"). Although commonly used as part of a process of formation in youth or adulthood, this particular order is intended for use in pastoral care with military personnel returning home from deployment as a sign of renewed participation in the life of their congregation. The scripture readings and prayers given for a variety of circumstances in other sections of this volume may be used within this order. This order may take place within Holy Communion or the Service of the Word, usually following the hymn of the day. Those making affirmation may gather with the ministers at the font at the conclusion of the hymn of the day. When this order is used independently of another service, it may begin with an invocation. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Epiphany of Our Lord

Matthew 2:1-12
Christ revealed to the nations

Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matt. 2:7-11)

On the Epiphany of Our lord (January 6), the household joins the church throughout the world in celebrating the manifestation, the epiphany, of Christ to the world The festival of Christmas is thus set within the context of outreach to the larger community; it possesses an outward movement The festival of the Epiphany asks the Christian household: How might our faith in Christ the light be shared with friends and family, with our neighbors, with the poor and needy in our land, with those who live in other nations?

Table Prayer for Epiphany and the Time after Epiphany ( Januar y 6 March 4)
Generous God, you have made yourself known in Jesus, the light of the world. As this food and drink give us refreshment, so strengthen us by your Spirit, that as your baptized sons and daughters we may share your light with all the world. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Light. It is . . . hoping to be found by a light and warmth . . . instead of darkness and cold. Anne Lamott, Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers Windows of grace Its not articulate or profound, but sometimes, like last Sunday, I look up and say, Help. Walking from the car to the church door, I didnt want to enter. I felt cold and empty. I would have gladly driven off by myself to drink coffee and avoid all human contact except for the barista. But the fact that I am the pastorand that it was Sundaymeant something more was expected of me. An atheist might think my cry-to-the-sky superstitious and childish. And it is childish, I suppose, but it was also the most honest prayer I could offer. And it was exactly what God wanted of me, honesty about the weakness and vulnerability that made running away look attractive. Not only do I think God liked my prayer, I think my one-word cry was not even my prayer. It was Gods prayer, Gods Spirit speaking in me, drawing me near, inviting me to be as needy as I felt. Go ahead, the Spirit says. Name it all, and let it all go. I am your Abba, the Loving Spirit who cries out in you, turning your every struggle into a window of opportunity for grace to flow into all your empty places. Prayer May every moment of this day be a window for grace to flow into my soul. Amen.

March 17
Romans 8:15b-17 When we cry, Abba! Father! it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christif, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. To ponder My belief is that when youre telling the truth, youre close to God. If you say to God, I am exhausted and depressed beyond words, and I dont like You at all right now, and I recoil from most people who believe in You, that might be the most honest thing youve ever said. . . . So prayer is our sometimes real selves trying to communicate with the Real, with Truth, with the

Soli Deo Gloria: Choir Devotions for Year A

by Craig M. Mueller Soli Deo Gloria is a collection of devotions for the choir, choir director, and music lovers. The collection features brief meditations based on the texts given in the Revised Common Lectionary, emphasizing the choirs leadership role in worship. The ministry of choral music requires preparation of both heart and voice. These devotionals, used at either rehearsal or before worship, will provide a spiritual element much as vocal warm-ups provide the musical element. Also included with each devotional is a hymn text appropriate for the day and rehearsal planning pages. Spiral-bound.

First Sunday of Advent

ARE YOU AWAKE?
Are you awake? Perhaps the director asks this of the choir when a rehearsal seems to drag and the energy is low. Sleeping and waking are part of the natural rhythm of life. But sleep is mysterious, isnt it? Studies show that in the last century the average American is sleeping two hours less per nightfrom an average of nine hours in 1910 to about 6.9 hours now. Im so tired. How often do you hear that? Weve become a tired and chronically sleep-deprived generation. Some of us also toss and turn. We wake up early. Is it stress? Is it getting older? Is it our diet or the wine we drank the night before? Is it the mattress? Its hard to be fully awake during the day when we havent had a good night of sleep. The days are getting shorter. There is less light and more darkness. And for many, these days come with an added burden. Seasonal Affective Disorderor SADchallenges some people at this time of year. There may be depression, oversleeping, lethargy, and a feeling of fatigue. Another Advent arrives with a wake-up call. Are you awake? Or are you sleepwalking through life? The first Sunday of Advent is like an alarm clock. The jarring images catch our attention. Its like a jolt of caffeine, or the shock of cold water being poured on us. Another year has passed. Time is flying. Life is short. Are you awake? The early Christians believed that Jesus would return in their lifetime. Many scriptures were written with that perspective in mind. The Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. So keep awake. Be mindful. Be watchful. Be vigilant. Be ready. Christ is coming soon and that might mean right now. Christ comes among us in word and sacrament, in the gift of community, in the face of a stranger, in the priceless gifts in each moment. Dont forget to get a good night of sleep. Youll be more alert at rehearsal and for the service! Yet, the Advent alarm clock is also ringing. Christ is coming. Christ is here! Are you awake? A Latin Advent hymn gives words for our prayer:
Wakened by the solemn warning, from earths bondage let us rise; Christ, our sun, all sloth dispelling, shines upon the morning skies.

Fortress Biblical Preaching Commentaries

NEW! Sign up to receive all six volumes and save 35% off each volume as it is published! Email customercare@augsburgfortress.org or call 800.328.4648 to place an order. Fortress Biblical Preaching Commentaries provide an overall reading strategy to the biblical book itself, and then delve into the lectionary selections to help lectionary preachers stay true to the message of each writer as they are presented through the liturgical year. Volumes in the series include Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts of the Apostles, and Pauline Epistles.

Matthew
by O. Wesley Allen Jr. With liturgical sensitivity and exegetical skill, Allen provides a unique preaching resource that will build biblical literacy by assisting both preachers and listeners in understanding Matthews gospel as a whole. Matthew helps congregational leaders develop exegetically informed cumulative preaching and educational experiences focused on but not limited to the lections in Matthew. O. Wesley Allen has given us a fine commentary on Matthew's gospel. Here is a robustly, unashamedly theological reading of the biblical text, all in service of Christian proclamation today. Here is Matthew's good news meant to be preached, to be performed, and practiced! William H. Willimon, Duke Divinity School 978-0-8006-9871-3 $22.00

Acts of the Apostles

by Ronald J. Allen Readings from Acts are offered only during Easter, so how can preachers make this important book come alive throughout the church year? While offering a basic exegetical framework for interpreting passages in their historical, literary, rhetorical, and theological contexts, this volume also suggests ways in which the preacher can relate passages and motifs from Acts to the congregation and world today. Ron Allen's new commentary on Acts is a gem for preachers. Allen honors the otherness of biblical texts and helps interpreters engage critically the theological issues that emerge out of struggling faithfully with them. Congregational Life
Preaching at the Crossroads: How the World and Our PreachingIs Changing
by David J. Lose NEW DECEMBER 2013! Postmodernism. Secularism. Pluralism. These are the words often used to describe the tumultuous changes that have affected our culture and our churches. But what do they really mean? What challenges and opportunities do they provide todays preachers? David Lose takes preachers on a tour of the major cultural influences of the last century, explaining how they have contributed to the diminishment of the church and exploring how they also offer opportunities to cultivate a more vibrant and relevant faith in the twenty-first century. 978-0-8006-9973-4 $19.00

Practicing Care in Rural Congregations and Communities

by Jeanne Hoeft, L. Shannon Jung, and Joretta Marshall NEW! Pastoral care in rural communities is different from care in other locales. Small towns and rural areas have particular challenges, and in seeking to live out the Christian life in the midst of those challenges, local churches have unique and useful insights into what it means to care for one another. 978-0-8006-9954-3 $19.00
