Planning Checklist for Advent and Christmas With Advent, the church begins a new year, and the year 20132014 begins a new
three-year cycle through the lectionary with year A, the year of Matthew. Order worship planning resources (see p. 29) and preaching commentaries (see p. 34) to help leaders prepare well for the upcoming Sundays and seasons. Order calendars for altar guilds, worship committees, and worshipers to help them connect with the rhythms of the churchs year (see pp. 3031).
In honor of Veterans Day (U.S.) and Remembrance Day (Canada) November 11,
consider including Affirmation of Baptism for Returning Veterans from Prayer Book for the Armed Services (see p. 19) in worship on November 10, or any Sunday in November.
Devotions and studies for individual or group use allow opportunities to open
scripture, look at it through different lenses, and join conversations around the Bible. See pages 1011 and 2125 for devotional offerings for Advent, Lent, and the church year.
Order candles and greens for the Advent wreath. Perhaps more than one wreath will
be desired for your congregation if Sunday school students and other groups gather for worship during the season in locations other than the sanctuary (see p. 5).
If handheld candles are used for worship on Christmas Eve, determine how many
candles and holders can be used from previous seasons, and how many new candles and holders will be needed (see p. 5).
Design service folders for Christmas worship that guests will be able to follow
easily, including specific instructions for communion distribution. Order seasonal bulletin covers if needed for services on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day (see p. 6).
Make arrangements for adequate seating, along with additional worship books and
service folders for larger assemblies on Christmas Eve. If you hold a pre-service of Christmas carols, have enough copies of carol sheets in anticipation of a large assembly with worship guests (see p. 14).

Church Advent Wreath Candles
One of the best-known customs for the season is the Advent wreath. The wreath and winter candle-lighting in the midst of growing darkness strengthen some of the Advent images found in the Bible. The unbroken circle of greens is clearly an image of everlasting life, a victory wreath, the crown of Christ, or the wheel of time itself. Christians use the wreath as a sign that Christ reaches into our time to lead us to the light of everlasting life. The four candles mark the progress of the four weeks of Advent and the growth of light. Cathedrals Church Advent Wreath Candles fit standard 1 sockets. Choose from multiple heights and five color combinations.

Advent
Christmas
Sunday School
The first Sunday in Advent (this year on December 1) is the New Years Day of the church year. Children need to be present for consecutive weeks to hear the Advent and Christmas stories unfolding. Advent is a time to prepare: to prepare for Christmas and to prepare for Jesus to come again. If youre not already using Holy Moly, Connect, or Spark Rotation Sunday school curriculum by sparkhouse, consider trying one or more of these curricula at the start of a new church year.
Holy Moly captures the imagination of kids by bringing the Bible to life. Kids walk away from class excitedly retelling the stories they just learned and eagerly awaiting whats next.
Connect is a Bible-centered Sunday school for grades 56 with just enough humor to get kids hooked. Preteens revisit the Bibles greatest stories, uncover major biblical themes, and discover how the Bible relates to their own lives.
Preparing for Advent and Christmas Spark Rotation provides eight workshop rotation options for each Bible story. In this model, kids spend more than one week on a Bible story and visit a different workshop each week in order to experience that same story from different perspectives. For kids in kindergarten to grade 6, each workshop rotation is focused on a rich Bible story or group of Bible stories about particular characters. Workshop rotations include Art, Bible Skills and Games, Computer Lab, Cooking, Creative Drama, Music, Science, and Video. Preschoolers experience an in-room rotation with Storytelling, Art, Snack, Music, and Game stations. Spark Rotation also includes an All Kids option, making it easy for smaller congregations or congregations that prefer a multi-age Sunday school program format. Leader Guide Spark Rotation Leader Guides include eight workshop rotation options for each of the Bible stories in the unit. It provides leaders with opening, wrap-up, and prayer time ideas, as well as a step-by-step guide and list of necessary supplies for each workshop rotation. Bonus CD The Spark Rotation Bonus CD provides materials to engage learners in each Bible story lesson through art, activities, and songs, as well as take-home materials families can do together. CD contents include: Coloring Pages, Family Pages, Large Group Openings, Lyric Sheets, Lyric Slides, and Lesson Prep Videos.

Matthew 2:1-12
Christ revealed to the nations
Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matt. 2:7-11)
On the Epiphany of Our lord (January 6), the household joins the church throughout the world in celebrating the manifestation, the epiphany, of Christ to the world The festival of Christmas is thus set within the context of outreach to the larger community; it possesses an outward movement The festival of the Epiphany asks the Christian household: How might our faith in Christ the light be shared with friends and family, with our neighbors, with the poor and needy in our land, with those who live in other nations?
Table Prayer for Epiphany and the Time after Epiphany ( Januar y 6 March 4)
Generous God, you have made yourself known in Jesus, the light of the world. As this food and drink give us refreshment, so strengthen us by your Spirit, that as your baptized sons and daughters we may share your light with all the world. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Light. It is . . . hoping to be found by a light and warmth . . . instead of darkness and cold. Anne Lamott, Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers Windows of grace Its not articulate or profound, but sometimes, like last Sunday, I look up and say, Help. Walking from the car to the church door, I didnt want to enter. I felt cold and empty. I would have gladly driven off by myself to drink coffee and avoid all human contact except for the barista. But the fact that I am the pastorand that it was Sundaymeant something more was expected of me. An atheist might think my cry-to-the-sky superstitious and childish. And it is childish, I suppose, but it was also the most honest prayer I could offer. And it was exactly what God wanted of me, honesty about the weakness and vulnerability that made running away look attractive. Not only do I think God liked my prayer, I think my one-word cry was not even my prayer. It was Gods prayer, Gods Spirit speaking in me, drawing me near, inviting me to be as needy as I felt. Go ahead, the Spirit says. Name it all, and let it all go. I am your Abba, the Loving Spirit who cries out in you, turning your every struggle into a window of opportunity for grace to flow into all your empty places. Prayer May every moment of this day be a window for grace to flow into my soul. Amen.

Romans 8:15b-17 When we cry, Abba! Father! it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christif, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. To ponder My belief is that when youre telling the truth, youre close to God. If you say to God, I am exhausted and depressed beyond words, and I dont like You at all right now, and I recoil from most people who believe in You, that might be the most honest thing youve ever said. . . . So prayer is our sometimes real selves trying to communicate with the Real, with Truth, with the

Matthew
by O. Wesley Allen Jr. With liturgical sensitivity and exegetical skill, Allen provides a unique preaching resource that will build biblical literacy by assisting both preachers and listeners in understanding Matthews gospel as a whole. Matthew helps congregational leaders develop exegetically informed cumulative preaching and educational experiences focused on but not limited to the lections in Matthew. O. Wesley Allen has given us a fine commentary on Matthew's gospel. Here is a robustly, unashamedly theological reading of the biblical text, all in service of Christian proclamation today. Here is Matthew's good news meant to be preached, to be performed, and practiced! William H. Willimon, Duke Divinity School 978-0-8006-9871-3 $22.00
