MAP OF BELIZE

8 The Belize Travel Guide

GETTING TO BELIZE
By Air
From the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America,
international non-stop flights to Belize are available from Atlanta,
Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Newark and San Salvador. These
gateways offer convenient connections to much of the world. The
major airlines serving Belize are: Delta Air Lines, American Airlines,
Continental Airlines, US Airways and Grupo Taca. Guatemala City
and Flores, Guatemala are also served by Tropic Air.

By Road
Driving to Belize can be an adventure with much to see and do.
Depending upon the route, the trip from the U.S. through Mexico
is between 1,350 and 2,000 miles. Traveling to Belize via Cancun,
Mexico City and Chetumal is comfortable, relatively fast and
inexpensive. All-weather highways connect Mexican cities with the
border city of Chetumal, from which there are regularly scheduled
buses to Belize City. ADO Buses run between Cancun and Belize.
Regular bus services operate between Tikal (Flores) in Guatemala
and Belize City.

By Sea
For travelers touring Central America, traveling to and from Belize
by boat is a viable option. There are regularly scheduled water taxis
that shuttle from Punta Gorda in southern Belize to Guatemala and
Honduras. Water Taxis also run between Chetumal, Mexico and
San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.

For a one-day visit to Belize, many of the major international cruise

lines offer Belize as a popular port of call on their weekly itineraries.
A short visit on a cruise will entice you to return for a longer stay.

GETTING AROUND BELIZE

By Air
The most time-efficient option for travel within Belize is by small
and safe airplanes, and regularly scheduled air service is very
reliable. Flights connect guests to all parts of the country, and offer
a bird’s-eye-view that leaves many wishing flights were longer. Local
airlines include: Tropic Air, Maya Island Air, Javier’s Flying Service
and Caribee Air service. Astrum Helicopter Service also provides
charters throughout the country.

www.TravelBelize.org 9
By Bus
The least expensive way to get around Belize is by bus, with Belize
City and Belmopan serving as the central bus depots for travel to the
districts. Buses travel to and from the towns several times daily with
stops along the highway at villages and visitor attractions. However,
some of the more remote villages may have only daily service. Please
check for altered schedules on Belize’s major holidays.

By Road
Belize’s major highways are paved and offer breathtaking views of
the Belizean countryside. Many of the side roads to villages and
attractions are graded dirt roads. Belize traffic laws are standard
international laws and all driving in Belize is done on the right side
of the road.

Rental vehicles are available at the PGIA airport, Belize City and
in many towns. Drivers must hold a valid international driver’s
license, which can be used for up to 90 days. Gas stations are located
in major towns and cities but are less common on the highways and
in the villages.

By Boat
Both the Belize Marine Terminal and Fort Street Tourism Village
Water Taxi Terminal provide hourly water taxi service to the
popular island destinations of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye.
Water Taxis are also available between Caye Caulker and San Pedro
and from San Pedro to Corozal Town.

Licensed tour operators offer tours and transfers from Belize City,
Dangriga, Hopkins, Placencia and Punta Gorda to the outer atolls
and offshore islands.

INSIDER RECOMMENDATIONS - 4 DAY ITINERARY

4-DAY

Day 1: Arrive and transfer to Dangriga via Maya Island Air or

Tropic Air from the international airport. Check in for your
flight at the ticket counter located in the main terminal after
you’ve cleared Belize Immigration and Customs.

Once in Dangriga, trans-

fer to the sleepy fishing
village called Hopkins.
This coastal location offers
an array of activities and
experiences from a lei-
surely beach stay, to forays
into rain forest, Maya sites
and day trips offshore for snorkeling, scuba diving or deep sea
fishing.

Relax and experience the activity of village life and learn to

beat the Garifuna drums, or choose from a variety of eclectic
boutique resorts and condominiums spread out on the beach
in both directions.

Day 2 : Depart for an exciting full-day tour at the Cockscomb

Basin Wildlife Reserve. Originally established in 1984 to pro-
tect a large jaguar population as well as other resident wildlife,
the sanctuary is one of the world’s only jaguar preserves. Rest-
ing in the shadows of the Maya Mountains, the Cockscomb

moist forest that rises from 300 feet above sea level to approxi-
mately 3,675 ft. at the summit of Victoria Peak.

Day 3: Depart for the coastal town of Punta Gorda, a treasure
that awaits at the south end of the paved Southern Highway.
Punta Gorda is a delightful blend of cultures sprinkled with
travelers passing through to Honduras and Guatemala via the
small port. Colorful markets are filled with local produce and
vendors with household goods and clothing from neighboring
countries.

Day 4: Depart for a unique, un-

forgettable cultural experience in
a Kekchi or Mopan Village – The
Maya Homestay. This indigenous
experience enables you to stay with
a Maya family and enjoy a low-key,
intimate, people-to-people cultur-
al exchange. It’s a low cost, no frills,
affordable, extraordinary hands-
on program.

Continue on to a decadent choco-

late experience and visit the Cacao
Trail. Cacao (or cocoa as many of us
know it), has played a dominant role in ancient Belizean culture
when the Maya first discovered the “magical” process that trans-
formed cocoa into chocolate, right through to modern day. The
Toledo District is home to the organic cacao orchards where
the pods are grown, harvested, processed, and later trans-
formed into the delicious Food of the Gods.

INSIDER RECOMMENDATIONS - 5 DAY ITINERARY

5-DAY

Day 1: Arrive in Belize and transfer to your host hotel in ei-

ther the Cayo District or Belize City.

Day 2: Your adventure begins as you explore the ancient Maya

world. Take a day tour deep into the Mountain Pine Ridge
Forest Reserve and visit one of the largest Maya Cities in Be-
lize. Caracol, Belize’s premier Maya site with a rich and excit-
ing history, rivals the power of Tikal. Caracol was the most
important political center of the lowland Maya during the
Classic Period within Belize. In 650 CE, the urban area of

Caracol had a radius of approximately 10 kilometers around

the site’s epicenter. It covered an area much larger than pre-
sent-day Belize City (today’s largest metropolitan area in the
country) and supported more than twice the modern city’s
population.

Day 3: Leave your host hotel and transfer by road to Placencia.
Check into one of the many quaint boutique resorts or
choose from a great selection of luxury beachfront resorts.
Have a traditional Belizean lunch with some rice and beans.

18 The Belize Travel Guide

Then take a tour up the Monkey

INSIDER RECOMMENDATIONS - 5 DAY ITINERARY

River for a play date with the
incredible howler monkeys. A
visit to Monkey River is truly a
unique experience. Your guide
will pick you up by boat, and
travel through the lagoon and in
among the red-mangrove fringe
forest along the coast, which is
home to the manatee and many
species of birds. Most of this trip
is in protected waters and will
be relatively smooth. Look for
the howler monkeys in the treetops, and have your video
camera ready to prove to everybody back home you weren’t
exaggerating about the monkeys’ calls.

Day 4: Check out and take a taxi to the airstrip for flight to
Belize City. Upon arrival into Belize City, you can easily hop
on another flight to San Pedro just a few minutes after arriv-
ing. The islands by air is its own experience, or you can opt
to take a water taxi in Belize City for a more cost-efficient
option.

Arrive in San Pedro and check into your accommodations.

Then plan a leisurely dinner at one of San Pedro’s many ex-
cellent eating establishments. You’ll find restaurant after res-
taurant along the beach with beautiful views of the water.
Or you can set out on your own and discover a hidden gem
tucked away on the path less traveled.

www.TravelBelize.org 19
Day 5: One of the most astonishing wonders of Belize is the
INSIDER RECOMMENDATIONS - 5 DAY ITINERARY

world-renowned Blue Hole, the result of an undersea cave

which collapsed centuries ago. Pack some lunch and drinks
for an all-day adventure and head for this extraordinary site,
which is teeming with marine life and and visible from outer
space.

The Blue Hole is nearly a perfectly circular hole 1,000 feet

in diameter and 412 feet deep and it has become the most
famous dive site in all of Belize - one that avid divers put on
their “life list” of places to dive. The water cave has sheer
walls adorned with stalactites and stalagmites between 120-
150 feet deep. If you don’t want to dive, you may also choose
to snorkel, since the Blue Hole is ringed by coral which also
makes it a great spot for shallow dives.

After this full day, you can head back to San Pedro and en-
joy the endless options the island has to offer, from fun-filled
pubs and clubs, to unique dining experiences.

Day 6: Depart paradise. Immediately begin planning your

next visit to Belize.

20 The Belize Travel Guide

INSIDER RECOMMENDATIONS - 6 DAY ITINERARY
6-DAY
Day 1: Welcome to Belize! Arrive and transfer to your host
hotel in the Cayo District. Relax and unwind from your day
of traveling over an ice-cold Belikin or a refreshing glass of
Belizean rum punch.

Day 2: Let the adventure begin and depart to Jaguar Paw,

where you will experience the magnificent Belizean Jungle and
ancient limestone caves firsthand. Jaguar Paw is an a venture-
some property located on 200 acres of rain forest on the banks
of the invigorating Cave’s Branch River.

Discover the fascinating old caves as you lazily float along on

inner-tubes into unique limestone archways that hold extrava-
gant crystal formations and untold stories of Maya rituals. Ex-
plore the many awesome formations that decorate these amaz-
ing caves and learn about the trees and jungle that surround
them. It is an amazing, historic tour that will leave you craving
more.

Or, opt to explore the jungle through a ziplining adventure.

Your journey consists of ziplining through numerous plat-
forms allowing the enjoyment of the Savannah Pine Ridge,
through the unscathed Belizean Jungle.

Your final traverse leads you to the large tunnel-like entrance

to the cave, where your tour ends with an exciting descent
straight down to the floor of the cave.

to your hotel to get ready for the next day’s activities. Be one
with Belize’s Jungle through this unforgettable experience.

Day 3: Start another adven-

turous day as you get ready to
explore the world of the Maya.
Head south through San Ig-
nacio for a short ride to the
Maya site, Cahal Pech trans-
lated as “Place of Ticks.” This
site center sits on the pinnacle
of a steep hill on the west bank
of the Macal River. The central
acropolis, approximately 900
feet above sea level, provides
an extraordinary view of the
Maya Mountains to the south
and the fertile valleys of the
Belize River to the northeast.

Learn about the history of the

local Maya touring the small museum and then head on to
the site that boasts of authentic pyramids, palaces and a ball
court. Also on-site are an altar and five stelae that depict Maya
history.

Once you finish exploring, you can enjoy an enticing meal

on-site overlooking the wonderful view. Head south to the
culture capital of Dangriga. This charming coastal town is
a base for inland excur-
sions to nearby rain for-
est attractions. Be sure to
also take a quick tour of
the world-famous Marie
Sharp’s habanero pepper
factory, or head out for the
incredible dive and snorkel
spots in waters near Tobac-
co Caye, South Water Caye
and Glover’s Reef.

Arrive and check-in to any

of the numerous hotels
in town. You can choose

wide selection of hotels and resorts visit TravelBelize.org.

Day 4: Get ready for some water adventure! Take a boat ride
to South Water Caye Marine Reserve, Belize’s largest marine
protected area.

The reserve is home to sea grass beds, patch reefs, sand bores,
mangrove habitat, over a dozen major cayes and many smaller
islets. Within the reserve is Man-O-War Caye, a sanctuary
for magnificent frigate birds and the brown booby. The area
is zoned to protect fishing nurseries and unique habitats but
provides extensive multi-use areas for snorkeling, fishing,
diving and educational activities.

Whether you choose to snorkel off the beach on the islands,

atop the reef, dive the “drop off,” or snorkel among lush coral
patch reefs, your options are endless here. So choose any of
these watersports or simply relax, sun bathe and enjoy the
tropical paradise. After this tour, take the night to relax and
enjoy dinner on the coast of Dangriga.

For a comprehensive list of accommodations, transportation

options and activities, feel free to visit TravelBelize.org.

Day 5: Check out of your accommodations and continue on

to your next adventure. Here your pre-arranged transfer will
take you to the Dangriga airstrip where you will fly to Belize
City. Upon arrival, take another flight to San Pedro, Ambergris
Caye, or you can opt to take a water taxi from Belize City for a
more cost-efficient option.

of town.

Golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation

on the island and rentals are available through your
hotel. You may opt to rent independent of your hotel – visit
AmbergrisCaye.com for options.

Day 6: You may have already experienced some fun water

activities, but in Belize, every place is different and unique.
Start your day by taking a small trip in the turquoise waters of
Caye Caulker, where you will head down to the Caye Caulker
Marine Reserve.

The Caye Caulker Marine Reserve adventure will allow you

to enjoy the turtle grass lagoon adjacent to the Caye Caulker
Forest Reserve and the Belize Barrier Reef that runs paral-
lel to the entire island, extending approximately one mile
beyond the reef. The marine life here is glorious, and the
colorful coral garden is spectacular.

After an exciting day, you can relax and enjoy a delicious meal
on the island. Choose from a wide variety of restaurants and

7-DAY

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to host hotel in the Cayo District.

Arrival at San Ignacio Town - relax and unwind from your day
of traveling over an ice-cold Belikin or a refreshing glass of
Belizean rum punch.

Day 2: Depart for an action-packed day in the jungle exploring

Ian Anderson’s Waterfall Cave. Hundreds of feet under the
limestone mountain ridge, explore a river cave with a total of
six waterfalls that must be challenged and conquered before
day’s end. Spectacular crystal formations loom above and
ancient Maya ceremonial centers are hidden inside chambers
as you explore this mist-shrouded kingdom. Or spend the day
zipping through the rain forest canopy at the Caves Branch
Outpost.

The zip line adventure consists of 10 treetop platforms, each

strategically located within the rain forest canopy with eight
thrilling runs. Double cables capable of withstanding 2,000
pounds of weight each help ensure safety. After an exciting
morning, couple your zip line adventure with a lazy glide

ISLANDS AND MARINE

www.TravelBelize.org 31
ISLANDS AND MARINE

A palm-studded tropical island, aquamarine waters, the sun, the

sand, and nowhere you have to be. Just off the coast of Belize, you’ll
find the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, hundreds
of coral-sand and mangrove islands and three of the Caribbean’s
four atoll formations. Ideal for a picnic between dives, a unique fly-
fishing excursion or a peek into the sanctuaries of exotic tropical
birds, many of these islands offer a choice from budget to luxury
accommodations. Choose the seclusion of a private island or the
activity of an island town, immerse yourself in the underwater
world offshore, or bask on the beach. Eight marine-protected areas
within Belizean waters attest to the region’s remarkable biodiversity,
as well as its commitment to management and protection of marine
ecosystems.

Turneffe Atoll
Turneffe is the closest to the mainland of Belize’s three atolls and
only a short distance from the Barrier Reef. Surrounded by small
orchid-strung mangrove islands, the spectacular underwater
formations make this a popular dive and fishing location.

Lighthouse Reef Atoll

Lighthouse Reef Atoll is another marine lagoon bounded by reefs
and sand islands. A nesting site of the rare Red-Footed Booby is
located on Half Moon Caye. An observation tower and picnic
facilities make this an ideal stop between dives.

32 The Belize Travel Guide

Glover’s Reef Atoll

ISLANDS AND MARINE

Fifteen miles outside the Barrier Reef and
some 70 miles from Belize City is Belize’s
most remote atoll. On the southeast end, the
six coral isles sitting atop the reef provide easy
access for diving, snorkeling and sea kayaking.

The Blue Hole

Six miles north of Halfmoon Caye in
Lighthouse Reef, is the renowned Blue Hole,
the result of a cave that collapsed centuries
ago. The Blue Hole is nearly 1,000 feet
across and ringed by corals, making for an
excellent snorkelling adventure. The base of
this fringing reef gradually slopes to 50 feet,
then into a seemingly bottomless underwater
cavern.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley

Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley are located
only four miles from the town of San Pedro and 36 miles from
Belize City, making them easily accessible and popular diving
and snorkeling sites. The shallow waters offer even the novice
swimmer a chance to encounter docile nurse sharks and rays.

San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is Belize’s largest island, approximately
36 miles from Belize City. From the cobblestone streets of
bustling San Pedro outward to the northern and southern ends
of the island, there is a wide assortment of accommodations,
restaurants, bars, shops and tour operators to suit all budgets.

www.TravelBelize.org 33
Caye Caulker
ISLANDS AND MARINE

The walkable island of Caye Caulker exudes a casual, relaxed

vibe. Once known for producing traditional wooden sailboats,
residents now embrace the thriving fishing and tourism
industries. Spend your days in swimsuits and barefoot while
you enjoy restaurants, hotels, bars, gift and dive shops that
offer an authentic Belizean island experience.

Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve

During the full-moon phases from March through June of
each year, this is your best chance of encountering the elusive
and docile whale shark. Snapper, grouper and other varieties
of fish congregate in the reserve to spawn each year. The
huge whale sharks are filter feeders, and search out the area
to feed on the eggs. The yearly spawning of the fish, and the
migration of the whale sharks is biologically crucial for all
the species, and very exciting for us humans to witness. The
marine reserve was established in 2001.

Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve

With 14 sand and mangrove cayes along the southernmost tip of
the Belize Barrier Reef, nearly 40 miles due east of Punta Gor-
da, shallow water reefs that occur as a fringe around the cayes
characterize the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve. The waters
around the cayes support a wide variety of fish, including manta
rays, dolphins and sea turtles, and snorkeling or kayaking is a
great way to explore. Picturesque secluded, shaded beaches are

34 The Belize Travel Guide

perfect for camping and picnicking. Because of the distance

ISLANDS AND MARINE

from Punta Gorda, it is recommended you make arrangements
to spend the night.

South Water Caye Marine Reserve

Explore Belize’s largest marine protected area located
only 10 miles off the coast of southern Belize. The reserve
encompasses over a dozen major cayes and many smaller
islets, including Man-O-War Caye, a sanctuary for
magnificent frigate birds and the brown booby. Snorkel off
the beach on the islands atop the reef, dive off the “drop off ”
or snorkel among lush coral patch reefs.

Other Islands
Hundreds of islands of various sizes and shapes dot the coast-
line along the entire length of the Belize Barrier Reef. Man-
grove-entwined islands sit beside white coral sand beaches.
Some offer the opportunity to access natural attractions,
such as bird sanctuaries, while others are near whale shark
spawning sites.

MAYA TEMPLES AND ARCHAEOLOGY

www.TravelBelize.org 37
Belize is believed to have been at the heart of the Maya civilization
MAYA TEMPLES AND ARCHAEOLOGY

that dominated Central America from 250-900 A.D. Supporting

this theory is the fact that Belize possesses 1,400 recorded Maya sites,
the greatest concentration in the entire region. Physical evidence of
this incredibly advanced civilization includes ceremonial temples,
stately structures and fine artwork made of jade, stone and clay.
Most sites are still hidden within the lush growth of the rain forest.
But many spectacular sites that have been excavated are readily
accessible, and local guides are available to explain the architectural
detail and cultural significance, which will greatly enhance your
experience. The Maya were highly evolved mathematicians, and
sites are imbued with fascinating symbolic meaning. Archaeologists
and students from around the globe come to Belize to advance their
own learning. Maya antiquities are also on display at various visitor
centers countrywide, and at the Museum of Belize in Belize City
that includes the largest carved jade Maya object ever discovered.

Cerros: Maya Hill

For those visitors who love to go off the beaten path, visit this
unique Maya site while enjoying the peace and tranquility of
the Corozal District. Located on a small peninsula jutting into
Corozal Bay, Cerros is the only Maya site located on the coastline.
This established it as an important link in coastal trade along the
Caribbean. This historically important site witnessed the early
“rise of Maya Kinship” and rose to prominence during the late
Pre-Classic period 300 B.C.

38 The Belize Travel Guide

Altun Ha: Water of the Rock

MAYA TEMPLES AND ARCHAEOLOGY

Despite its small size, Altun Ha was a major ceremonial center
during the Classic Period. Located just 31 miles from Belize
City on the old Northern Highway, Altun Ha was an important
trading center strategically located about six miles from the
coast. An unusual characteristic of this site is that no stelae
were found. However, during excavation many valuables were
uncovered here, including the largest Maya carved jade object
ever discovered, the famous Jade Head, in 1968.

Lamanai: Submerged Crocodile

Lamanai lies along the banks of the beautiful New River
Lagoon in the Orange Walk District and is known for having
the longest history of continuous habitation in the Maya
region. A major attraction of this site is the well-preserved
stela of a Maya ruler emerging from a crocodile headdress.
Lamanai features monumental architecture of temples and

palaces dating from the Classic and Pre-Classic periods and

is one of Belize’s largest and most beautiful ceremonial sites.

Cahal Pech: Place of Ticks

Located in northwestern Cayo District overlooking San
Ignacio Town and the Macal River, the site was first settled
around 1200-1000 BC. Cahal Pech sits in a lush jungle setting
only a short 10-minute walk from the town’s center, giving
urban visitors easy access to an archaeological site where
the remnants of a royal palace are particularly interesting to
explore.
www.TravelBelize.org 39
Caracol: The Snail
MAYA TEMPLES AND ARCHAEOLOGY

Located in the Chiquibul National Park in southwestern Cayo

District, Caracol was once home to 150,000 people, the largest
Maya center in Belize and has a dominant place in Maya
history. Ancient Caracol was larger in population and area
than present-day Belize City. The largest temple at Caracol is
“Caana” or “Sky Place.” This massive pyramid rises over 140
feet above the jungle floor and is the tallest manmade structure
in Belize. These temples are about 46 miles into the Mountain
Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, but definitely worth the drive.

Xunantunich: Maiden of the Rock

Located in the Cayo District near the Guatemalan border, the
journey to Xunantunich includes passage across the scenic
Mopan River via hand-cranked ferry. Climb “El Castillo,”
displaying a spectacular 130-foot temple and the tallest
structure on-site, providing breathtaking views of the towns
of San Ignacio, Benque Viejo Del Carmen and the Guatemalan
countryside. Displays at the visitor center demonstrate the
importance of this site as a ceremonial center in the Classic
Period. Xunantunich grew to a population of nearly 10,000
inhabitants during the so-called collapse of the Maya from
600-1000 A.D.

MAYA TEMPLES AND ARCHAEOLOGY
Lubaantun: Place of Fallen Stones
Lubaantun is located a mile from San Pedro Columbia Village
in the Toledo District. This unique site is constructed of cut
stones laid and fitted without mortar. Lubaantun was a major
center of religious, ceremonial, political and commercial
activities during the eight and ninth centuries (730 A.D. - 860
A.D.). The famous Crystal Skull, carved from a single crystal
of quartz, was found here in 1926.

Nim Li Punit: Big Hat

Nim Li Punit was occupied during the late classic period 700-
900 A.D., and is located near the village of Indian Creek, in
the Toledo District. The site is famous for its stelae, where
more than 25 have been found. Nim Li Punit got its name
from the longest stela in Belize (30 feet) and one of the tallest
in the Maya world. The large stela carving depicts a figure
wearing a large headdress.

REEF AND BEACHES

www.TravelBelize.org 43
Live your dreams out in 3D where the water meets the beach.
REEF AND BEACHES

Belize is blessed with rich diversity in its marine habitats,

resulting in UNESCO awarding World Heritage Status to the
Belize Barrier Reef. The marine attractions are as varied as the
natural formations that make up this 185-mile coastal wonder.
Explore the barrier reef, atolls and more than 400 islands, white
sand beaches, fringing and patch reefs, more than 100 species
of coral, hundreds of species of fish and an abundant variety of
marine life. To ensure the survival of these delicate ecosystems,
miles of the Belize Barrier Reef have been designated as marine
reserves.

With the protection of the reef the entire length of Belize, the
waters just off the coastline are a sanctuary for watersports
enthusiasts. Whether you’re an expert, or there’s an activity
you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t, Belize has the outfitters
and instructors to get you set up. Choose from a variety of
exciting activities, any one of which will make a great story once
you return to the real world.

SCUBA Diving
Become a voyager to a fascinating realm where the pace of life
is dictated by the tides. With underwater visibility routinely
extending to 200 feet, divers of all ages and abilities find their
way to Belize. In fact, the diving is so extraordinary in Belize,
we have visitors who return year after year and do nothing
else. Divers are eager to explore the spur and groove coral
formations and sheer walls along the length of the reef. Get
certified before your visit, or take introductory courses with

locations. Popular dive sites include the atolls, the world-
famous Blue Hole, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, South Water
Caye Marine Reserve and seasonal whale shark encounters at
Gladden Spit.

Snorkeling
Floating atop the warm, clear, turquoise waters with a mask
and snorkel, provides an exciting glimpse into Belize’s
underwater glories and is a “must see” even for the first-time
snorkeler. Knowledgeable local guides will help you explore
the kaleidoscope of color found in hard and soft corals, vibrant
sponges and more than 500 species of fish. Swim with the
gentle rays and docile nurse sharks in waist-deep water or
enjoy the view from 20 feet above the water’s surface. Shark
Ray Alley is among the most popular snorkeling sites in Belize.

Swimming
Inside the reef along the welcoming beaches, young and old can
play together all day. Perfect for families with small children,
or for the young at heart, Belize’s gradual sandy beaches and
gentle surf make swimming
easy and fun. You may even
find some exotic shells among
the sand.

Fishing
No matter what your level of
expertise or interest, Belize
has world-class fishing from
Bacalar Chico in the north to
Punta Icacos Lagoon in the
south. The reef, flats and grass
beds around mangrove islands
and coastal lagoons throughout
the country provide the year-
round opportunity for fly-
fishing’s “Grand Slam” – permit, bonefish and tarpon in a
single day. Belize – especially the northern Savannah flats – is
the only place outside of South Florida that enables anglers
to sight-cast for tarpon. The many river mouths are home to
snook, tarpon and jacks. Near the Barrier Reef, spend a day or
hour fishing for grouper, barracuda or snapper. And for the
adventurous, go offshore for big game fish, including marlin,
wahoo, bonito and kingfish. To protect our delicate ecosystem,
Belize practices “catch and release” sport fishing.
www.TravelBelize.org 45
Kayaking
REEF AND BEACHES

Greet the sun with a short early morning kayak or choose a

week–long kayak adventure between islands. Gliding along the
surface of the water quietly and efficiently is one of the best ways
to encounter wildlife. Inside the shallow reef, be on the lookout
for fish, rays and dolphin or explore the intricate mangrove
ecosystem for resident and migratory birds in the branches and
the delicate seahorse in the root systems.

Paddle Boarding
It’s a sport that’s surging in popularity. A great workout and a
great way to get around the beaches quickly, you definitely have
to try paddle boarding while exploring Belize. The pros make it
look easy, and it takes some practice to get your balance right,
but it is just as fun learning in our warm coastal waters as it is
to master.

Sailing
Sailing inside the protected length of Belize’s Barrier Reef allows
visitors to explore the islands and snorkel among the patch
reefs. Imagine cruising along with just the noise of the wind in
the sails and the waves against the bow. Once the rhythms and
adventure of sailing get in your blood, you’re hooked for life.
Whether on a private vessel making port, or looking for a bare
boat charter, Belize has dependable facilities and numerous
professional operators ready to meet your cruising needs.

REEF AND BEACHES
Beaches
Few things can make you be as connected to the earth as the
luxurious feeling of your feet in the hot sand. And all along
so many beach and island communities you can walk, run or
bike the length of the beach without interruption. Go for a
sunrise jog, rent a fat-tired bike, or go exploring up and down
the beach with your camera.
It’s the best way to get to know
your new home away from
home.

Wind Sports
The constant trade winds and
wide expanse of calm waters
inside the barrier reef and
along the coast make it an ideal
playground for sports such as
wind surfing and kite surfing/
boarding. Whether you’re an
expert or just learning, it’s an
amazing way to be one with
the wind and fly across the
water.

Parasailing
Floating serenely above the
reef and beaches offers a
bird’s-eye-view of paradise.
Parasailing requires nothing
more athletic than the thirst
for adventure. You may want to remember your camera for
some unprecedented perspectives of Belize.

Imagine the wild geometry of the porous rock, the sounds, the

smells, the cave’s cool breath on your warm skin. When you step
away from the familiar, your senses reach out like antennae.
Much of the geological structure of Belize is porous karst
limestone, which is ideal for the formation of underground caves
and rivers. Although many mythic caves have been known for
years, everyday spelunkers are still discovering new ones. Expert
cave divers sponsored by the National Geographic Society have
found Central America’s longest cave system on the Chiquibul
River in the Maya Mountains. Here too, there is evidence the
Maya used these underground worlds for religious ceremonies.

Rio Frio Cave

Rio Frio Cave is located in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest
Reserve and reveals an impressive 65-foot arch at its opening.
Just about a half a mile in length, this is a great choice for
the first-time caver. From the cave’s opening, visitors have a
striking view of the entire cave and stream running through it.

Barton Creek Cave

Hidden in the small Mennonite community of Barton Creek,
along the Chiquibul Road in the Cayo District, are the cool,
dark caverns of Barton Creek Cave. This cave was used by the
ancient Maya for rituals such as human sacrifices, bloodletting
and fertility rites.

Che Chem Ha Cave

Che Chem Ha Cave is located 16 miles from San Ignacio
and offers an extraordinary experience. The cave entrance is
decorated with Maya motifs and is guarded to prevent looting
of hundreds of fully intact ancient Maya pots. Beginning with
a 45-minute uphill hike through farmland and beautiful forest,
guests are escorted to the cave by an experienced guide.
Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave
Deep within the forests lies a wonder of both ancient and
natural Belize. Following a 45-minute drive from San Ignacio
and a 45-minute hike through the beautiful Tapir Mountain
Nature Reserve with numerous jungle stream crossings,
visitors find a crystal-clear stream flowing from the cave
opening. Take a short swim into the cave and a guided hike
through the passage to one of the most impressive Maya
sites in Belize. Also known locally as “Xibalba,” you’ll find
evidence of ceramics, stoneware and skeletons. One artifact
named the “Monkey Pot” is one of just four found in Central
America. One skeleton, known as “The Crystal Maiden,” is the
calcified bones of a teenage girl, giving the skeleton a sparkling
appearance.

St. Herman’s Cave

CAVES AND THE UNDERWORLD

One of the most accessible caves in the country, St. Herman’s
lies among the dense tropical forest on the Hummingbird
Highway, just 12 miles southeast of the capital city of Belmopan.
As part of the Blue Hole National Park, established in 1986, this
cave holds important cultural and archaeological significance
evidenced by its use by the Maya during the Classic Period.
Tiger Cave
Also referred to as the San Miguel Cave, given its proximity
to the Maya village of San Miguel in the Toledo District, the

nature hike to this cave

offers an opportunity to
learn about the diversity
of the Toledo rain forest
and a firsthand view of
Maya farming practices.

Hokeb Ha Cave
On a shady hillside near the village of Blue Creek is Hokeb
Ha Cave. According to archaeologists, the discovery of several
ceramic and ceremonial altars reveal that the Maya used this
cave in the Late Classic Period.

Caves Branch
Flowing west of the Sibun River, Caves Branch River carves into
limestone walls deposited by ancient reefs to form a massive
cave system. The river dips in and out of these caves, allowing
guests to float through the filtered light of the jungle foliage.
Fertility gods, 1,000-year-old pottery shards and embedded
human footprints can be seen along the way.

The true measure of a vacation is

not how long it lasts, but how long
you’re under its spell.

www.TravelBelize.org 53
CULTURE AND PEOPLE

Memories are crystallized from the unparalleled connections you

make with people and places. And the Belizean people and the
experiences we offer our guests will be among the most cherished
of your life. Diverse cuisine and colorful personalities with an
array of traditions and customs represent more than 8 diverse
cultures. Comprised mostly of Maya, Creole, Mestizo, Garifuna,
East Indian, Mennonite, Arabs and Chinese, this harmonious
mixture results in one of the most peaceful countries in the
region.

Maya
The Maya are the first known inhabitants of Belize, governing
an amazingly advanced civilization more than 2,000 years ago.
The Maya, who have preserved many traditional customs and
spiritual practices, comprise 10% of Belize’s population. An
incredibly unique feature of the Maya Home Stay Network
enables guests to stay with Maya families. The Maya welcome
guests to participate in daily activities, such as clay pot making,
tortilla preparation, farming, roof thatching, identifying
traditional medicine and playing marimba music. Belize is
home to the largest population of Maya per capita.

54 The Belize Travel Guide

Creole

CULTURE AND PEOPLE

The descendants of African
slaves and European settlers
of the Colonial era, the Creole
constitute a third of Belize’s
population. From this culture
has come one of the country’s
dominant languages known as
Kriol, the national dish of rice
and beans, and Boom and Chime
music resonating from a blend
of drums, accordion, banjo,
harmonica and animal jawbones.

Mestizo
The Mestizo of Belize are a
subtle reminder of Belize’s
Spanish roots. Descendants
of Maya and Spanish set-
tlers, who immigrated to Be-
lize during the Caste Wars of
the Yucatan, the Mestizo live
predominately in northern
and western Belize. Rich fla-
vorful soups such as Relleno,
Chimole and Escabeche and
widespread colorful festivals
contribute to the Belizean
identity.

Garifuna
November 19 commemorates the
arrival in 1823 of the Garifuna,
descendants of Carib, Arawak
and West African people and
their contribution to the Belizean
landscape. The rich culture of the
Garifuna includes the hypnotic
drumbeat of popular Punta
music and long-standing healing
traditions. In 2001, UNESCO
proclaimed the Garifuna
language, music and dance to be
among the masterpieces of the
Oral and Intangible Heritage of
Humanity.
www.TravelBelize.org 55
East Indian
CULTURE AND PEOPLE

Brought to Belize in the early 1800s to work on sugar

plantations in the north and south, the East Indian has
quietly assimilated into the other ethnic groups of Belize.
More recent immigrants from modern India are active in the
merchant and business communities.

Mennonite
Two different Mennonite sects of German ancestry make
their home in Belize. Their distinct communities maintain
long-standing religious practices, customs and lifestyles.
Both groups are prolific farmers. The traditional sect shun the
combustion engine and wear customary clothing; whereas
the more modern sect utilizes state-of-the-art machinery
and farming practices and is an integral part of the Belizean
economy.

Arabs
Lebanese, Palestinians and Syrians make up a small but
industrious group in Belize. Arriving in the late 19th century,

56 The Belize Travel Guide

these groups remain a close-knit community with a strong

CULTURE AND PEOPLE

presence as merchants in towns and cities throughout the
country.

Chinese
In 1865, about 470 Chinese laborers arrived in Belize to work
on newly established sugar estates in the Corozal and Orange
Walk Districts. This distinct group has quickly integrated
into Belizean society. Hard working and diligent, they have
maintained a strong community throughout Belize and operate
primarily in the restaurant and merchant businesses.

Ethnic Cuisine
As the Caribbean gateway to Central America, Belize is a
treasury of people, tastes, specialities, styles and traditions from
cultures all over the world. When all of these incredibly diverse
and delicious influences comingle in the kitchen, your palate is
rewarded with uniquely delectable dishes and beverages. Visit

Corozal shares a strong historical connection with our Mexican

COROZAL DISTRICT
neighbors, and is the birthplace and home of the Mestizos.
Today, the district encompasses a diverse population of ethnic
backgrounds that have blended to give the people a distinctively
relaxed outlook on life, making Corozal a tranquil paradise. The
warm and welcoming locals provide a friendly haven away from
the bustle of the tourist track.

Corozal Town
Resting along the shore of the Corozal Bay, this cozy town is
caressed by the tradewinds. With a population of only 9,100,
Corozal is considered to be the most peaceful of all Belizean
municipalities. Calming emerald waters of the Corozal Bay,
charming resorts, shady parks, and the warmth of the people
have lured many visitors and retirees from North America
and Europe into making this district their hometown.
The town’s name is derived from the cohune palms that
dominated the landscape when the first Mestizos arrived.
The local economy is primarily based on the sugar industry
but is also complemented by other agriculture activities and
fishing. Located only 10 miles from the Mexican border,
Corozal Town is the perfect hub to visit archaeological sites,
islands, reefs and all other destinations.

Mural at the Town Hall

Visit the Town Hall on First Street South where you will
find a vibrant and colorful mural depicting the history of
Corozal from the life of the Mayas to present day events. This
mural was masterfully painted by a well-known Corozaleño,
Manuel Villamor Reyes.

Art in the Park

This monthly event is an opportunity for countrywide
artisans to showcase their varied talents in all disciplines.
Visitors enjoy the luxury of meeting, mingling and buying
locally made gifts at bargain prices.

East Indian Museum

Along the main road in the southern end of Corozal Town,
visitors can experience a unique guided cultural tour
showcasing the traditional life and culture of the Belize East
Indians. The only museum of its kind in the region, travel back
in time when wooden washboards were used, homemade
foods were cooked on fire hearths and homemade kerosene
lamps lit up homes.

Santa Rita Maya Site
COROZAL DISTRICT

Located about one mile

from the town square, this
great historical Maya site
commemorates the birth-
place of the Mestizos. Once
atop the main temple, visi-
tors can enjoy a panoramic
view of the town.

Cerro Maya
Cerro Maya was the first
Maya trading center built
along the seaside in 50
B.C. To visit this unique
archaeological site, one may
choose between a guided tour by boat or an adventurous trip
by road. While the boat trip to Cerros takes approximately
15 minutes across the bay, the road tour provides visitors
with the opportunity to travel back in time when crossing the
river by a manual ferry and driving through typical Mestizo
villages. Tours can be arranged at any resort located in the
town.

Shipstern Nature Preserve

Originally a self-sustaining business devoted to the expor-
tation of butterflies, this 22,000-acre reserve protects a wide
array of habitats, from wetlands and lagoons to wet and dry
tropical forests. The dry forest is rare - found only at Ship-
stern in Belize and just four other areas in the Yucatan Penin-
sula. Shipstern is home to all five cat species found in Belize,
the endangered Baird’s Tapir, some 300 species of birds, in-
cluding wood stork nesting sites, and a myriad of other plant
and animal species. The Reserve boasts a one-of-a-kind ob-
servation tower that stands approximately 40 feet above the
forest canopy, which provides visitors an excellent view of the
Corozal Bay, the Forest Canopy and the Shipstern Lagoons.
In addition, visitors can choose to walk the botanical trail,
visit the butterfly garden or enjoy some bird watching. For
the more daring and adventurous, special tours can be ar-
ranged for visits to the lagoon and bird colonies or hiking
through the forest to the unexplored Shipstern Ruin.

Progresso Lagoon

COROZAL DISTRICT
During the peak of the Maya civilization, Progresso Lagoon
served as a busy marine highway for merchants to trade their
goods, as well as a strategic military lookout post. Today,
visitors enjoy the calm waters of the lagoon and equally
tranquil village life.

Sarteneja Village
Sarteneja, a typical Mestizo fishing community, is one of
the gems of northern Belize. This picturesque fishing village
can be reached by boat or by road across two hand-powered
ferries. This small village is home to one of the largest fleets of
indigenous fishing crafts in the country. Sailboats with crews
of 5 to10 men venture south for weeks harvesting fish, conch
and lobsters. Hire a fisherman to take you to the archaeological
site of Cerros to the west, or Rocky Point, part of the Bacalar
Chico National Park, to the east.

Consejo Shores
Seven miles north of Corozal Town sits Consejo Shores, home
to many retirees, who mix easily with the native population.
The seafront parks sloping into shallow, sandy waters are ideal
swimming grounds for families.

achieve this highly evolved state of being through an indelible
connection to place in the marvellous Orange Walk District
where the locals greet you with broad smiles. The grand Maya
temples, ubiquitous New River, the northwestern forests and
exotic birds entice you to forget your preoccupations. Here, the
strong Mestizo Maya influence is unmistakable. Old-fashioned
tortilla factories, mission churches and Spanish-style homes are
everywhere. Orange Walk District is home to approximately
16,000 people, primarily descendants of the Mestizo culture
borne of the Spanish-Maya refugees of the Caste Wars. The main
source of income before the 19th century was mahogany logging,
which has now been replaced by sugarcane production.

Banquitas House of Culture

For visitors interested in the history and culture of Orange

Blue Creek is a Mennonite village settled in the early 1950s.
Primarily an agricultural community, the inhabitants are also
well known for furniture manufacturing and construction

New River Lagoon

The Maya temples of Lamanai are best visited by an hour-long
boat trip through the remote jungle swamp and waterways of
the New River and New River Lagoon. The river’s surrounding
wetland is teeming with exotic plants and wildlife, including
crocodiles, turtles, huge tarpon and water birds.

La Milpa Archaeological Reserve

While this site has not been completely excavated,
archaeologists have identified it as the third-largest Maya site
in the country. The La Milpa Archaeological Reserve has 24
plazas and approximately 85 major structures documented
across its expansive and impressive layout. Walking through
this site is a combination of archaeological exploration and
nature hike with occasional evidence of looters’ trenches
burrowed into the base of jungle-covered temples. Visitors to
the site during the months of late April through early July have
a chance to see and participate in live archaeological digs.

Honey Camp Lagoon

Honey Camp is a great day trip from Orange Walk Town.
Hundreds of coconut trees adorn the beaches and embrace the
lagoon’s sweet waters. The Maya used the lagoon for ceremonial
and residential purposes during the civilization’s most volatile
period from 1000 A.D. to 1500 A.D. Archaeologists have
uncovered two settlements: one on islands in the lagoon, and
one along the banks, which was occupied in the late Classic/
early Post-Classic period. A few beach resorts can be found
along the shoreline, serving local fare and cold drinks.

Nohmul Archaeological Site

While many of the Maya sites in Belize have been renovated
to what archaeologists believe they once looked like, some
sites in Belize have been left in their natural state. Nohmul is
an example of what happens to the works of man once nature
takes over. The vegetation-covered mounds lie in the middle
of vast sugarcane fields, and from the top of what is left of
the twin temples, the Blue Creek Escarpment is visible in the

Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area

The 2,600,000-acre Rio Bravo Conservation and Management
Area is the largest private protected area in Belize. The RB-
CMA is home to a rich sample of biodiversity, which includes
392 species of birds, 200 species of trees, 70 species of mam-
mals, 30 species of freshwater fish and 27 species of conserva-
tion concern. The area is owned and managed by Programme
for Belize, which promotes sustainable development of the
area through conservation, scientific research, sustained-yield
timber harvesting, non-timber forest product extraction, car-
bon sequestration, ecotourism and educational activities. The
RBCMA is only a 75-minute drive by road from Orange Walk
Town. Visitors can stay within the protected area at PfB’s La
Milpa Ecolodge and Research Center or its Hill Bank Field
Station.

Lamanai
Lamanai, meaning “submerged crocodile” in the Maya lan-
guage, is home to the second largest Pre-Classic Maya struc-
ture and possibly the most interesting archeological site in Be-
lize. The Lamanai temple complex sits atop the western bluff
of the New River Lagoon and is surrounded by pristine rain
forest teeming with black howler monkeys. Lamanai was oc-
cupied continuously for more than 3,000 years and its remote-
ness contributed to its continuous occupation, well beyond
most other Maya sites. Set in tropical forest and providing
spectacular views from several of its large temples, Lamanai
provides a unique experience into the culture of the Maya
and the biological diversity of the tropical forest. A scenic and
thrilling 26-mile boat ride up the New River is the easiest way
to get to Lamanai.

as well as restaurants, bars, nightlife and numerous historical
sites. Inland waterways, once busy thoroughfare for colonial
mahogany cutters, cross much of the District, creating habitats
for an abundance of wildlife. Offshore islands offer idyllic day
tours for snorkeling, diving and relaxing.

Baron Bliss Lighthouse

Baron Henry Edward Ernest Victor Bliss, a paraplegic sailor,
visited Belize in 1926 and fell in love with Belize’s clear blue
waters, appealing climate and kind people. Two months
after his arrival to Belize, Baron Bliss died, leaving Belize a
$2 million legacy. The distinctive lighthouse monument was
erected at the Fort George Point in his honor.

House of Culture
In 1814, the official residence of the British Governor of Belize
was a symbol of British colonial rule. In 1996, “Government
House” was renamed the “House of Culture” and an extensive
renovation project was undertaken to retain the architectural
integrity of the home. Today, the House of Culture hosts
cultural exhibits, events and musical performances.

St. John’s Cathedral

St. John’s Cathedral is the oldest Anglican Church in Central
America. Built in 1812, it was constructed from red bricks
originally used as English ship ballast. The cathedral has a
vivid history and was the site of coronations of three kings of
the Mosquito Shore.

Community Baboon Sanctuary

The Community Baboon Sanctuary, located 20 miles north-
west of Belize City, is one of Belize’s most successful eco-
tourism stories. Founded
in 1985 to protect a small

animals live under the forest canopy in natural settings within
large fenced enclosures. The zoo operates an environmental
education program and a refuge and rehabilitation center for
more than 125 species of Belizean wildlife.

Altun Ha: Water of the Rock

Despite its small size, Altun Ha was a major ceremonial center
during the Classic Period. Located just 31 miles from Belize
City on the old Northern Highway, Altun Ha was an important
trading center strategically located about six miles from the
coast. An unusual characteristic of this site is that no stelae
were found. However, during excavation, many valuables
were uncovered here, including the largest Maya carved jade
object ever discovered, the famous Jade Head, in 1968.

Mountain Pine Ridge
CAYO DISTRICT

Established in 1944, the

Mountain Pine Ridge
reserve is a landscape of
rolling pine forest spread
over smooth, granite
hillsides. One distinctive
feature is Baldy Beacon,
a hilltop that stands out
because its soil will not
support the growth of
trees. Bird watching is a
popular activity within
the reserve; species in-
clude the rufous-capped
warbler, crossbill, pine
siskin, stigeon owl and eastern bluebird. If you visit between
autumn and spring, you may also see the hepatic tanager and
chipping sparrow. Raptors cruise the valleys of the Pine Ridge,
and it’s the most likely place in Belize to see orange-breasted
falcons.

Spanish Lookout
At Spanish Lookout, you can encounter a modern sect of
Belize’s Mennonite population residing in a landscape of
rolling hills. Since arriving in 1958, Mennonite communities
have become an integral part of the Belizean economy in a
variety of ways - poultry and dairy farming, hardware and
equipment supply.

to relax and watch swimmers enjoying the troughs, pools and
natural waterslides made smooth by the rushing water.

Aguacate Lagoon
About 20 minutes from “downtown,” Spanish Lookout is a
quiet retreat near the large and refreshing Aguacate Lagoon.
Amenities include trails for hiking and birdwatching and a
thatched shed for picnicking.

San Ignacio and Santa Elena Towns

Located 67 miles from Belize City are the twin towns of San
Ignacio and Santa Elena. The two towns are connected by
Belize’s only suspension bridge, the one-lane Hawksworth
Bridge, across the Macal River. San Ignacio is the largest
town in the Cayo District and is a base for tourism activities
throughout Cayo and the Guatemalan Maya site of Tikal.
With its relaxing atmosphere and engaging ambiance, San
Ignacio and Santa Elena offer an exciting blend of ecotourism
adventures and eco-resorts.

SISE Center
The SISE Center located in downtown San Ignacio explores

the symbiotic nature of plant life. Learn about the healing
properties of such indigenous plants as red gumbo-limbo
and man vine, and see some endangered medicinal plants. As
a testament to the natural diversity found in the rain forest,
all of the flora along the trail was found here and nothing
was planted. You can also walk through a traditional Maya
healer’s workplace complete with all the necessary tools for
the traditional Maya Medicines.

Cahal Pech Museum

Cahal Pech is just a 20-minute walk from San Ignacio and
overlooks the town. This was the royal acropolis-palace of an
elite Maya ruling family who lived here during the Classic
Period. Cahal Pech was
settled around 1000
B.C. and abandoned
by 800 A.D. The site
consists of seven pla-
zas and more than 30
structures, including
temples, residential
buildings, ball-courts,
an altar and a sweat-

house, all situated on just two acres. A royal burial chamber

was found in one of the structures. Inside the tomb a ruler
had been laid to rest with the accoutrements necessary for the
afterlife. Included in the find were shell and bone ornaments,
pottery vessels, obsidian blades, and jade objects, the most
impressive being a jade and shell mosaic mask.

Green Iguana Project and Medicinal Trails

CAYO DISTRICT
Visitors to the Green Iguana Project and adjacent Medicinal
Jungle Trail have the opportunity to smell or taste the herbs
that are frequently used by locals as remedies or cures to eve-
ryday illnesses. Informed guides will also provide informative
explanations about their uses. A popular part of the program
is the highly visited and interactive conservation project of
the Green Iguana, where bright green, juvenile iguanas are
cared for until they are ready to be released into the wild.
Added to the exhibit are some of Belize’s native wood turtles
that spend much of their time wading in shallow pools.

Chaa Creek Butterfly Farm & Natural History Museum

At The Lodge at Chaa Creek visitors can observe the fascinat-
ing lifestages of the Blue Morpho butterfly, and visit the Chaa
Creek Natural History Museum which offers interactive dis-

plays, research papers and imagery depicting Cayo’s rich eco-

system. On the property, Chaa Creek’s Maya farm provides
the Lodge with much of the fresh fruits and vegetables for its
kitchen.

El Pilar
Located about 12 miles northwest of San Ignacio, El Pilar is
an ancient Maya city center located on the Belize-Guatemala
border. The largest known Maya site in the Belize River area,
El Pilar features more 25 plazas and hundreds of other ancient
structures. At its height, El Pilar housed more than 20,000
people. The name “El Pilar” is Spanish for “watering basin,”
reflecting the abundance of water in the area, which is rare for
a Maya city. For conservation purposes, most structures and
monuments are not exposed. A house site called Tzunu’un is
fully exposed, and an on-site forest garden provides a glimpse
into traditional Maya agriculture.

for years. The district of Stann Creek is one of those places.
Breathtaking vistas of the Maya Mountains and the emerald

Dangriga, affectionately known as the “Garifuna Culture
Capital of Belize,” combines with the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife
Sanctuary and the South Water Caye Marine Reserve offshore
to make the Stann Creek District an outstanding location to
sample the reef, rain forest and culture of Belize.

Dangriga Town
The district’s largest town is located 55 miles from Belmopan
and 107 miles from Belize City. With a population of some
11,600 people, the vibrant Garifuna community of Dangriga
offers art, music and exotic dishes, along with the annual
November 19th re-enactment of their early 1800s arrival on
Belize’s shores.

Hopkins Village
For authentic Garifuna culture and wide expanses of gold
sand beaches, visit the village of Hopkins, just 12 miles
from Dangriga. Once a sleepy fishing village, in recent years
Hopkins has become a popular tourist destination with
amenities ranging from budget to luxury. Whether visitors
want to unwind on the beach, eat fresh fish, kayak along the
shore, or take day tours to the reef and rain forest, there is
plenty to keep you busy.

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary spreads more
than 160 square miles of rugged gullies and steep slopes –
all carpeted by rain forest. Established in 1990 as the world’s
first jaguar reserve, the sanctuary is home to an abundance of
wildlife, including all five species of wildcats – jaguar, puma,
ocelot, margay and jaguarundi. An extensive trail system
leads to hidden waterfalls along a tropical river and past
spectacular “kaway swamps,” where more than 290 species of
birds have been recorded.

Mayflower Bocawina National Park

This unexcavated Maya site is located off the Southern
Highway near Silk Grass Village. In front of the two
ceremonial mounds of Maintzunun and T’au Witz is a large
pit suggesting that these sites were once used for ceremonial
offerings to the Maya gods. Home to an incredible number of
bird species, the hiking trails also lead to a series of refreshing
waterfalls, including the Bocawina Falls.

Red Bank Village

Driving along the Southern Highway, a small sign points
westward to the village of Red Bank. This little-known Maya
village is famous not only for its Maya traditions, but for the
flocks of scarlet macaw that live there. Between January and
March, these magnificent birds fly in to feed on the sweet,
ripe fruit of the annatto and pole wood trees.

Serpon Archaeology Site

Tour the mounds of the Serpon and Regalia Sugar Estates that
thrived between 1863-1890. Walk among the jungle-covered
remnants of an industrial lumber mill, foundry, a railroad,

once they have followed all requirements.

Family and Student Travel

With so many interests and activities to pursue, Belize is
a great place for a safe family vacation regardless of age.
Everyone can’t wait to return. Many hotels and tour operators
offer specially designed packages for family travel and
kids’ discounts. Belize is also host to many well-established
educational programs. Organized study tours, school-based
courses and volunteer service programs are available for all
ages and budget levels. Popular programs include tropical
ecology with both rain forest and marine experiences,
traditional herbal and medicinal practices, archaeology,
anthropology and photography.

Diving and Snorkeling
SPECIAL INTERESTS

Divers flock to the legendary Blue Hole to check that box on their
“must-do” list. Whether you have years of experience, or you’ve
always been curious to explore the incredible world under the
waves, Belize makes it easy. With hundreds of tropical islands and
atolls, and the reef just off the coast and running the length of
the country, diving and snorkeling opportunities are everywhere.
Meet rays and grouper face-to-face. Glide gently over the coral
and see it teeming with exotic sea life. Imagine the excitement
of a chance encounter with an eel or a docile whale shark. The
experience is so magical, surely it won’t be the last time you swim
with the fishes in Belize.

Fishing
Whether fly fishing
or using conventional
tackle, Belize has the
natural structure to at-
tract and maintain a bountiful fishery. Three of the top-10 per-
mit destinations are in Belize, and it’s the only place other than
South Florida that offers classic sight-fishing for tarpon. Flats, la-
goons, islands, atolls, the barrier reef, it all provides unparalleled
opportunities to fish an amazing array of species. Where else
could you have the ability to go after bonefish, tarpon, permit,
snook, jacks, grouper, barracuda, snapper, bonito, sailfish and
marlin all in the same week? Expert guides and lodges are readily
available throughout the country.
92 The Belize Travel Guide
Couples/Romance

SPECIAL INTERESTS
The experiences you’ll discover in Belize will stir emotions
dwelling deep inside you. Yet every experience is made better
by sharing it with the one you love. And whether you want
to share adventure or a nap in a hammock on the beach,
Belize has created just the right conditions for couples to lose
themselves in the moment and be with one another. From
dining to amorous hotel recommendations, from spa packages
to excursions, Belize will feel like your own romantic secret.
Reconnecting has never felt so good.

Birding
Blend quietly into the forest, then watch and hear it come alive
with a dazzling variety of birds and birdsong. With so much of
the country dedicated to national parks and protected forest,
a vast multitude of spectacular native and migratory birds
pose willingly for the camera. With more than 500 species
of indigenous birds, the serious birder will certainly want to
seek out the flocks of scarlet macaws, the graceful jabiru stork
with an eight-foot wingspan, and Belize’s national bird—the
colorful keel-billed toucan.

Volunteer and Faith-Based Travel

Belize is not just a vacation paradise. Many individuals and
groups travel to Belize to volunteer special skills or to help
further their mission by assisting with educational programs
or by initiating social development causes. Many local and
international service organizations also provide opportunities
to travel to Belize.

interest travel.
