Has Facebook gured it out?

Has Facebook cracked the holy grail of mobile technology? Investors sure think so. Shares of the largest social media company soared more than 30% Thursday in their best performance since the company went public last May, and at more than $34 a share are now within range of its muchmaligned IPO price of $38. The reason: The company appears to have gured out how to make money on its booming mobile traffic, something that has dogged tech companies since mobile became the key to the future a few years ago. Facebooks mobile magic led to an embarrassing reappraisal on Wall Street, which had totally soured on the companys future. We were wrong, was the title of a report by Richard Greeneld at brokerage rm BTIG, who had rated the stock a sell with a $22-a-share target. Colin Sebastian at brokerage Robert W. Baird expressed a similar view.

More bears caught prowling in yards

As suburban sightings climb, humans all abuzz
USA TODAY

USA SNAPSHOTS Living veterans, in millions:

Sandhya Kambhampati Cheryl Pawelski was on a conference call in Altadena, Calif., just 15 miles from downtown Los Angeles, when she noticed something odd in her backyard. All of a sudden, there was a bear walking toward my back porch, she said. It was pawing at the pool. Pawelskis encounter, which ended harmlessly after the creature lumbered into nearby woods, is classied as a human-bear conict. Thats how state agencies across the country typically refer to bears that wander into backyards an occurrence that is on a signicant uptick in several states. In 13 states with detailed recordkeeping, USA TODAY found the number of such encounters rose 23% from 2010 to 2012, to 14,882. More than 200 sightings have made local news reports this summer, the majority in New

Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Thousands of other encounters dont make news but are logged by state agencies as nuisance bears or human-bear conicts. Some states dont keep count because there are so many and residents arent fazed. Biologists say the U.S. bear population is growing, especially in the East, as bears extend their range across heavily populated states such as Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Hampshire. In states such as Florida, where both human and bear popula-

tions are growing, such conicts rose 47% to 6,188 during the same twoyear period. Bears have shut down schools, frightened hospital workers and brought neighborhoods together to take pictures of the bear on their street. Many bears keep a low prole, but sightings have generated social media buzz on Twitter. Bears will travel far for food, sometimes up to 100 miles a day. Lured by the smell of bacon from a neighbors open door, two cubs showed up atop Gina Davis fence one Saturday morning in May in Snoqualmie Ridge, Wash. We joke and say, Who wouldnt run across the fence for some bacon? she said. Bear biologists say that while bears may disrupt suburbia, they arent necessarily dangerous. However, they advise against approaching or trying to pet them and to watch from a distance. Wildlife officials also recommend following garbage ordinances and putting away food. The very negative view on Facebook is evaporating, he says. You cant ignore a billion users. Prot reported this week by Facebook not only blew away forecasts but was also largely driven by a moneymaking machine linked to mobile apps. Facebook saw mobile users explode 51% during the second quarter. More important for a company created for desktop computers, now 41% of ad dollars come from mobile devices. Theyre lucky, says Rick Summer of Morningstar. They have fantastic assets that translate well to a mobile experience. Facebooks success highlights: uThe importance of where mobile ads appear. Nearly all of Facebooks mobile revenue is generated by ads inserted between entries on users newsfeeds, Summer says. The ads are getting users attention without annoying them, he says. uThe need to keep prices up on mobile. One problem with mobile ads is they tend to be priced below desktop ads because theyre so small. Facebook is bucking the mobile discount in part because its getting more sophisticated at dealing with advertisers, Sebastian says. uThe shattered dreams of the pre-IPO era have been resurrected. Investors thinking Facebook had no limit lined up to buy at $38 a share a year ago. The companys luster faded as investors assumed the social media juggernaut would have trouble adjusting to mobile. Now that it is exhibiting such prowess, shares soared 31% Thursday to $34.71. Still, challenges lie ahead. At $34, the stock is fairly valued, Summer says. To get back to $38 a share and beyond, Summer says, there are still lots of things to gure out.
