Calculus | Packer Collegiate Institute The Area Function Assessment

Remember to get full credit, you need to show all work, clearly and neatly. Remember, this isnt just about you getting the answer, but you showing someone else how you got the answer.

You may not use a calculator on this assessment.

Question A: Part I: Below are two original functions. Although the area graphs for these functions would both look very similar, they would also be different. How would the graphs look different, and articulate without resorting to equations why that difference exists.

Part II: Explain as clearly as possible why a constant function will have a linear area function. (It might be best to use an example, and draw the original and area graphs.) The key to a complete explanation is to draw clear connections between what is happening on the original graph and what is happening on the area graph.

Question B: Find the equation for the area function for the following graphs:
original graph original graph

Find the equation for the area graph. This is not asking you to draw the area graph.

Question C: Part I: Here is the area function. It changes character at the points indicated.

Draw the original function that gives rise to this area function. (Ignore the arrow on the bottom.)

Part II: Look at point x=A on the area graph, and now find the correspond point on your original graph. That point you drew on the original graph lies ____________________ the x-axis. (Fill that blank in with above, below, or on.) Does it have to lie where you placed it, or if you drew a different original graph, could it be in a different place? (For example, if you noted the point is above the x-axis, could you have drawn a different original graph where that point was below the x-axis, or on the x-axis?) Explain your answer.

Part III: Look at point x=B on the area graph, and now find the correspond point on your original graph. That point you drew on the original graph lies ____________________ the x-axis. (Fill that blank in with above, below, or on.) Does it have to lie where you placed it, or could it be in a different place? Explain your answer.

Question D: Part I: Sketch the area graph, making sure you get as many key points on the area function accurate as possible.
Here is an original graph. Here is the area graph.

Part II: Explain why your area function looks the way it does on the interval [2, 4] . Be as clear as you can, and be sure to draw a connection to the shape of the area function on that interval.

Part III: My area function looks ______________ [steep / pretty-flat-looking] near x 4 . My area function looks ______________ [steep / pretty-flat-looking] near x 2 If you didnt draw explain why the area function looks like that near these points, take some time and write that explanation out here.

Question E:

Above is an original function. Below, sketch the area function which corresponds with it!
