Diagnostic Test

This morning we will be having an activity. But first, I need you to answer the following items in a one-fourth sheet of paper. 1. 1 X 7 2. (-5) (-3) 3. 4 (-2) 4. -25 X 3 5. 5 5 6. (-10) 3 7. 12 X 10 8. 7 X -3 9. 2 X -5 10. -4 X- 3 Let us check your answers. The following are the answers for each item.

1. 7 2. 15 3. -8 4. -75 5. 25 6. -30 7. 120 8. -21 9. -10 10. 12

Teachers Activity 1. 1 X 7 = 7 2. (-5) (-3) = 15 3. 4 (-2) = -8 4. -25 X 3 = -75 5. 5 5 = 25 6. (-10) 3 = -30 7. 12 X 10 = 120 8. 7 X -3 = -21 9. 2 X -5 = -10 10. -4 X- 3 = 12 Return the paper to the owner. Those who got the scores of 9 and 10 you will proceed to station 1, and those who got the scores of 8 and 7 to station 0 while those who got the scores of 6 and below you will be having a remediation session. On every station, you are given a task that you have to perform completely before you move to the next station. Instructions are given on every station. You may begin now. Remediation Session

Presentation

Consider this situation. Chandler drives his car 4 miles round trip every day. How many miles does he drive to and from work in 5 days? What is the mathematical sentence for this problem? What does 4 X 5 mean? Represent 4 sets of positive 5 using integer tiles. What is 4 sets of positive 5? Consider this second situation. If the temperature went down 5 times by 2oC, what is the total decrease in temperature? What integer represents the word decrease? In the problem, how are you going to illustrate the phrase the temperature went down 5 times by 2oC? Why is 5 negative?

4 miles X 5 days = 20 miles. Chandler drives 20 miles to and from work in 5 days. It means 4 sets of positive 5.

Positive 20

Negative integer. 2 X -5 -5 denotes the number of times the temperature decreased by 2oC.

Teachers Activity What does 2 X -5 mean? Illustrate 2 sets of negative 5. What is 2 sets of -5? Illustrate 3 X -4. What does the illustration mean? What is 3 sets of -4? Represent 5 X -3. What do the tiles represent? What is 5 sets of -3? Let us take this another situation. Dante burns 6 calories per minute when he runs. How many calories does he burn when he run for 2 minutes? How would you represent the problem in a mathematical sentence? The sign of the first factor is negative, which means we take the opposite of six sets of positive 2. What is the opposite of six sets of positive 2? So, we flip-over the tiles.

Students Activity It means 2 sets of negative 5. -10 It means 3 sets of -4. -12.

-15

Five sets of negative 3.

-6 X 2 = -12

Six sets of negative two.

What tiles do we have now? What is the value of the tiles? What is -6 X 2? Represent -1 X 4. What does -1 X 4 mean? What is the value of the tiles? What is -1 X 4?

Negative tiles. -12 -12

It means taking the opposite of one set of positive four. -4 -4

Teachers Activity What if I have -2 X -4? What does the expression mean? Illustrate -2 X -4. How did you arrive at that representation?

Students Activity It means taking the opposite of 2 sets of negative four.

Represent -5 X -3.

The given is -2 X -4, first is to group two sets of -4. Since the first factor is negative we, take the opposite of the second factor, -4 which is +4. So we have two sets of positive 4. Therefore, the product of -2 X -4 is 8.

What is the value of the tiles? What is -5 X -3?

Comparison and Abstraction

From our examples, what do you notice when we multiply two positive integers? What is 7 X 7? What is three sets of 9? What do you notice when a positive integer is multiplied with a negative integer? Give me the product of 3 X -6. How about 5 X -7? What is the product if we multiply 4 by -10? What is the product of a pair of a negative integer and a positive integer? What is -10 X 7? How about -1 X 10? What is the product of -3 X 6? What do you see when we multiply a negative integer by a negative integer? What would be the product if I multiply -6 by -6? How about -2 X -10? What is the opposite of 3 sets of negative 4?

When we multiply two positive integers the product is positive. 49 27 The product of a positive integer and a negative integer is negative. -18 -35 -40 Negative. -70 -10 -18

The product of a negative integer multiplied by a negative integer is a positive integer. 36 20 12

Generalization

What is the product of positive (+) X positive (+)? What is the product of positive X negative? What is the product of negative X positive? What is the product when you multiply negative X negative? So, what is the product when you multiply two integers having same signs? How about two integers having unlike signs? Now, let this be our rule that when we multiply integers having same signs or like signs the product is positive and when we multiply integers having different signs or unlike signs the product is negative.

Positive Negative Negative Positive The product of two integers having same signs is positive. The product of two integers having unlike signs or different signs is negative.
