MiCOM M840

Reliability, Safety, Economy. Modularity (up to 32 analogue or 144 digital channels) and external compatibility. 12/16 bits resolution and 1,2 to 10 kHz/0.1 to 50/60 Hz sampling rates. Integrated fault location function The purpose of the electrical generation, transmission and distribution systems is to provide the electrical power end users with safe, reliable and dependable electricity. This in turn requires that the companies and industries install high performance monitoring and diagnostic systems. This instrument is the result of considerable experience combined with the most advanced micro-processor-based technologies, in order to meet the users' needs and requirements. Indeed, the consequences of disturbances on the electrical network can occasionally result in considerable financial losses both for the power generation companies as well as the end users. "Managing", i.e. working to prevent and eliminate disturbances by evaluating them via the use of MiCOM M840 disturbance recorders, has become one of the key elements to improve the reliability of electricity companies and industries alike. However, further to the diagnosis systems evolution, the volume of data to be processed increases, as well as the amount of analysis work required. This is where the MiCOM M840 can best be applied. Its capabilities considerably reduce analysis time without sacrificing any other of its functions.

Feature enhancements designed to improve performance

Accelerated fault diagnosis and source finding by analysis of triggering on calculated channels, negative, positive and zero sequence voltages and currents, etc), representative of the real phenomena encountered on the networks and in the industries. Ability to register very short duration transient disturbances Sample frequency: from 1.2 kHz to 10 kHz (50Hz) from 1.44 kHz to 9.6 kHz (60Hz) Capacity to register slow disturbances, set sample frequency: 6.4 kHz Recording period: from 10 s to 15 days, 12 hours, 49 min. and 37s (50 Hz) corresponding to: from 0.012 Hz to 50 Hz from 10 s to 12 days, 22 hours, 41 min. and 21s (60Hz) corresponding to: from 0.014 Hz to 60 Hz

16-bits resolution on the AC analogue channels, thereby guaranteeing extremely accurate measurements. Fault location function incorporated into the recorder, thus instantly available. Modular and expandable system, able to satisfy future needs. Records stored on a protected, internal mass memory so as to avoid any spurious loss of information. Reduction in communication time by means of high performance data compression and transmission protocols. Compatibility of the system with other devices such as recording and fault simulation instruments (IEEE COMTRADE). Access protection using passwords.

The configuration can be fully made by software, on the front panel (option), locally or remotely via a PC, in order to minimize the on site operations.

Designed to integrate a system

The architecture of the MiCOM M840 is based on the use of standardized components (VME bus, etc.) which enables integration into existing electrical installation automation and protection systems and allows it to interface with the following components: Battery power supply, Switched or private communication networks (optic fibers, hertzian network, etc.), Synchronization and time resetting (compatible with external time pulse, IRIGB, GPS, etc.).

Adaptable capacity
The MiCOM M840 is fully modular and can therefore be configured to accomodate the number of analogue and digital channels to be monitored. With a maximum unit capacity of 32 analogue channels and 64 digital channels, or alternately only 144 digital channels, Win DR Manager recorders can be linked and synchronized together to provide monitoring of large electrical networks.

Operating and analysis unit

Installed on a standard PC, the Win DR Manager software enables local or remote configuration of the recorders, as well as the analysis and viewing of the data acquired by any recorders of the ALSTOM range (TPE 2000, EP-EPC, MiCOM M840): Retrieval of records, either in manual or automatic mode, Multi-windows graphic analysis,

Integrated computation functions (harmonics, RMS values, table of power values, etc.), Vectorial representations, Optimized fault location, Black and white or colour printout, Import export ability with other fault processing devices in compliance with IEEE COMTRADE standard format.

Recording of faulty characteristics

The response time required for the faults to be recorded by the MiCOM M840 can be either fixed, or automatically adjusted to suit the choice of application, so as to take into account the full scope of the fault. Adjustable hysteresis, rebound filtering and repetitive fault devices are also provided to guard against recording spurious phenomena.

By external contact (dry contact or application of a voltage from 24 to 250V DC) triggering can be initiated on request or by another recorder in the case of high capacity systems.

Fault location
The M840 incorporates a fault location function on the monitored line, whether the fault is initiated in single phase, two phase, three phase, in isolated or earthed configuration. The distance to the fault location is documented on printout or during graphic analysis. Mostly, location accuracy is within 2%.
