ORBITAL POSITION 19.2E

Why 19.2E?
At ASTRA, we help our customers break new ground.

New markets, new audiences and new opportunities. Perhaps more than almost any other orbital position, 19.2E has achieved exactly this.

The first position to carry a digital pay-tv package. The first to broadcast an HD channel in Europe, and one of the few constellations of satellites to cover nearly 97 million homes. 19.2E is a true pioneer. So heres the technology, the engineering, the geography and the entrepreneurial clout of one of the most successful positions to orbit the planet.

A new level of reach

Broadcasting success has always been, and probably always will be, about reach. After all, a channel always needs to find an audience to be successful. And this is the great benefit of 19.2E; it has an unbeatable reach. From Spain to Germany, France to the Netherlands, Algeria to Poland. The neighbourhood speaks for itself. There are more than 1,100 TV and radio channels, including over 50 in High Definition. Together with customers such as Canal+, ARD, Sky Deutschland and Sogecable, we have built 19.2Es extraordinary reach.

Orbiting around broadcasters

There are many issues that broadcasters told us were costing them money and time. Weve made sure that 19.2E solves these. Our satellite footprints are country shaped, not space shaped. 19.2E follows Europes national boundaries in a neat way rather than bisecting them in odd places. So theres no need to complete your reach with other networks and technologies. For digitisation programmes, we offer ubiquity where cable, digital terrestrial television (DTT) or internet protocol TV (IPTV) struggle to reach some of the population. So 19.2E makes your European digitisation programmes much easier, with low-cost, easyto-install consumer equipment. We also feed cable and IPTV headends with digital content to help networks complete their coverage. We understand the intricacies of planning regulations. Many European countries like Germany prefer dishes to be no larger than 60cm. And so 19.2E is designed with the power to exceed this performance. So whether youre after audience numbers or the sheer simplicity of working with a broadcast-oriented satellite, ASTRAs 19.2E is the way to do it.

TNTSATa case history

Many people associate satellites with paid-for entertainment. This was especially true in France a couple of years ago. However, in this case satellite has a big role to play in making sure people are not excluded from watching television when the analogue signal gets switched off. A good example of this is TNTSAT in France. In 2009 the French analogue switch-off started with a total switch over set for November 2011. The pressure was on to migrate everyone in just three years. The problem that became apparent was that some predictions of coverage using terrestrial transmitters were clearly over-optimistic. Switching over to digital would create some severe holes in the nations coverage. Coastal places, mountainous areas, even areas near big stadiums, could now be in the dark. Such is the nature of terrestrial signals. A large chunk of France was facing being excluded from their major connection to the world. So in mid 2009 ASTRA and our customer Canal+ stepped in. Together with Canal+ we created a satellite bouquet for the French free-to air DTT channels, TNTSAT. The team at ASTRA France created a full marketing campaign for TNTSAT. Region by region, they made sure that everyone matching their profile knew how to get the box, decoder and the dish to stay connected. The result was that by the time each region or dpartement had stopped its analogue signal, no one was left without their TV. And they now had 18 free to air national channels, 24 regional stations, and four High Definition channels. And no subscription charges. Sales for TNTSAT equipment soared beyond expectations to reach 2.3 million terminals in June 2010. This story illustrates many issues around digital switch-over, but perhaps clearest is the way satellites can help stop people and even whole communities becoming marginalised when technologies change.

Why ASTRA?
Flexibilty Our clients come in all shapes and sizes, and different business models. Some clients are pay-TV operators with hundreds of channels and millions of subscribers. They simply provide us with the channel feed; they just want to know that the Digital Video Broadcasting-Satellite (DVB-S) signal is reaching their loyal viewers. Other clients leave generating the DVB-S signal to us. They provide us with the playlist and we store and manage the content. This frees them of the need to invest millions in technology to do something thats not at the core of their business. It also allows them to concentrate on doing what they do best, which is entertainment. We can provide: Encryption Playout services Encoding Content hosting Digital multiplex services Market research Its very easy to assume one region will have similar broadcasting habits as another, but that kind of assumption can cost you dear. Each year we commission 70,000 interviews in 35 countries by independent institutes like GfK and TNS. We then deliver the insights gained to our customers so they can make the important decisions for their businesses. Its part of our approach of helping our entertainment partners grow their business by allowing them to explore the unknown with confidence. Dedicated teams If youre trying to grow a channel you need all the support you can get. We know thats going to take more than just one of our representatives stepping off a plane once in a while. So we provide you with a dedicated team that speaks your language and is based in a city near you. We give you access to our market reports and our network of installers. We run training courses for your field teams.

WE CREATE PARTNERSHIPS WITH CONSUMER ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURERS, BROADCASTERS AND REGULATORS

Reliability We know how much is at stake when your audience tunes in for the content youre delivering. So we go to near-obsessional lengths to guarantee each and every system. At our headquarters in Luxembourg weve got our own power supply, should the local network go down. If for any reason thats unserviceable too, we have an alternate grid power feed from Germany. This level of security is just as tight 36,000 kilometers up, as it is on the ground. We build in plenty of what engineers call redundancy into every satellite, more than any other satellite operator. This means theres a backup system ready to take over and ensures the smooth running of every broadcast. We know how hard you work to build audience share. We dont want any kind of malfunction to damage it. Standardisation and partnership New technologies like High Definition and 3DTV are very exciting but they always raise the question: what should the common standard be? Part of working on the frontier of new technologies means that this question comes up over and over.

Of course theres always the temptation to defend your own standard rather than reaching agreement with all the rest. But consumers want to buy into technology that has a future. And the best guarantee of the future for a technology is for it to be supported by all. At ASTRA we go to great lengths to achieve this. We team up with consumer electronics manufacturers and broadcasters. We work closely with regulators and governing bodies to gather and agree a standard that can be adopted by one and all. This way, we share a common vision: to improve the viewers experience, and ultimately grow the audience. We partner with, amongst others, the following companies and institutions: ANGA Deutscher Multimedia Verband DIGITALEUROPE Digital Television Group (DTG) Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) European Cable Communications Association European Satellite Operators Association (ESOA) Global VSAT Forum RETRA

Join us on the frontier

In many ways, the story of televisions evolution has only just begun. In Europe, for example, there are still 40% of people who dont have anything more advanced than analogue TV. For us, this figure represents an opportunity. Because wherever new audiences and broadcasting meet, there is a possibility of real growth. At ASTRA we seek out these frontier markets. It could be in Slovakia or the Ukraine, South Africa or Sweden. But geography is only one kind of frontier. There are other kinds, like introducing new standards of picture quality. At the end of 2009, there were six million High Definition TV homes on ASTRA. In the coming years this will boom by another 14 million. Along with new markets, new broadcast technology clearly represents an exciting area of development. Finally, but perhaps most importantly, there is a frontier of space. Although this is often taken for granted, were doing new things here too. Switchable beams, for example, which will link Europe with the Middle East. But like every satellite we fly and every project we handle, its not just about technology. Its about bringing new experiences to new audiences and new revenues to broadcasters doing new things.
