Moments later, the 86-year-old monarch herself stood solemnly while a childrens choir serenaded her with God Save the Queen, and members of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force raised the Union Jack. Much of the opening ceremony was an encyclopedic review of British music history, from a 1918 Broadway standard adopted by the West Ham soccer team to The Whos My Generation to Bohemian Rhapsody, by still another Queen. The evening started with fighter jets streaming red, white and blue smoke and roaring over the stadium, packed with a buzzing crowd of 60,000 people. An explosion of fireworks against the London skyline and Paul McCartney leading a singalong were to wrap up the threehour opening ceremony masterminded by one of Britains most successful filmmakers, Oscar winner Danny Boyle. SPECTACULAR Boyle led off his spectacular in his favored medium: A movie depicted a high-speed flyover of the Thames, the river that winds like a vein through London and was the gateway for the citys rise over the centuries as a great global hub of trade and

industry. The rush of images showed a cricket match, the London Tube and the roaring, abundant seas that buffet and protect this island nation set to a pulsating soundtrack including snippets of the Sex Pistols version of God Save the Queen a antiestablishment punk anthem once banned by the BBC. To open the ceremony, children popped balloons with each number from 10 to 1, leading a countdown that climaxed with Bradley Wiggins, the newly crowned Tour de France champion. Wearing his race-winners yellow jersey, Wiggins rang a 23-ton Olympic Bell from the same London foundry that made Big Ben and Philadelphias Liberty Bell. Its thunderous chime echoed around the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium. Bells in Britain have traditionally pealed to celebrate the end of war and the crowning of kings and queens, and now for the opening of a 17-day festival of sports. The show then shifted to a portrayal of Britain that Britons cling to a place of meadows, farms, sport on village greens, picnics and Winnie-the-Pooh, AA Milnes bear who has delighted generations of British children tucked warmly in bed. But the British ideal to quote poet William Blake, of Englands green and pleasant land then took a darker, grittier turn. The set was literally torn asunder, the hedgerows and farm fences carried away, as Boyle shifted to the industrial transformation that revolutionized Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries, the foundation for an empire that reshaped world history. Belching chimneys rose where only moments earlier sheep had trod.

See story on page 10 The Industrial Revolution also produced terrifying weapons, and Boyle built a moment of hush into his show to honor those killed in war. Boyle had earlier told reporters: This is not specific to a country; this is across all countries, and the fallen from all countries are celebrated and remembered. Because, obviously, one of the penalties of this incredible force of change that happened in a hundred years was the industrialization of war, and the fallen, he said. You know, millions fell. NOT TOO many Olympians will be seeking the new Scottish beer that purports to contain eight illegal performance enhancing ingredients. BrewDog says its limited edition ale is designed to undermine global sponsorship for the London Olympics. It contains creatine, guarana, lycii berries, kola nut, Gingko, matcha tea, maca powder and steroids all banned for professional athletes. The stunt follows controversy over restrictive sponsorship deals involving major players such as McDonalds and Coca-Cola. James Watt, cofounder of BrewDog said: It seems a beer laced with performance enhancing ingredients isnt actually illegal, but it is definitely frowned upon. Never Mind the Anabolics is a thorn in the side of the biggest corporate beast spawned this century. This is the craft beer community showing the sponsors of the games the finger in the best way we know how. A percentage of the proceeds of the craft beer is going towards a new surfboard for a surfing dog called Abbie.

ACCORDING to a top British scientist aliens really do exist and resemble giant jellyfish. Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock worked with an artist to show what she thought alien life might look like. She believes the idea that extra-terrestrials will be humanoid is wrong and they are more likely to look like floating jelly fish with hanging onion-like sacks. Dr Aderin-Pocock added that our intergalactic cousins would have metallic surfaces for light absorption, orange bottoms for camouflage and buoyancy sacks to maintain altitude. But because the galaxy is so huge, she doubts whether humans will ever be able to contact them. Dr Aderin-Pocock, currently working on the observation instruments for the Aeolus satellite, is one of the first credible scientists to claim that aliens probably do exist. Her picture of an alien was commissioned to celebrate the launch of TV Channel Edens Science Month last month. Dr Aderin-Pocock explains: Our imaginations are naturally constrained by what we see around us, and the conventional wisdom has been that life needs water and is carbon-based. But some researchers are doing exciting work, playing with ideas such as silicon-based life forms.
PAINTING road signs has got more complicated, at least for some Swindon roadworkers. In not checking their right or left hands, some road painters left pedestrians in total confusion last month. At a crossing point over a busy road pedestrians are told to look left (which is correct), but an arrow points right (which is not only incorrect, but could be deadly). With passing buses walkers are supposed to look down the road from left to right, but anyone following the advice of the painted arrow could find themselves in serious trouble. Thankfully, whoever painted the markings got it right on the opposite side of the road with an arrow pointing right next to the warning look right.
IT IS NOT easy to achieve first class honours studying law, but Mel and Holly Walker did just that last month Twice! The 22-year-old twins from Teesside, have graduated with the same degree from Northumbria University. The sisters scored the same marks and now they are both starting their careers at the same firm. They are also celebrating awards for achieving the highest grades in employment law, scoring identical marks despite answering different questions.
FOLLOWING his girlfriend crashing their car, a man was ejected through the sunroof and somersaulted onto the ground and survived last month. Despite being thrown six feet from the car, the man was unscathed in the accident in Dudley, reported the Daily Telegraph. His girlfriend received only minor injuries when she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a garden wall. The crash was caught on the home-security cameras outside the home of pensioner Howard Hamilton. It was like something out of a police action film. Somebody could have easily been killed if they had walking by, he said. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gve-guQcGXg
IT WAS 10 years ago when Nick Newlife took a chance and placed over 1,500 on a bet, and was given 66-1 odds on Roger Federer winning seven Wimbledon Championships by 2019. As the world now knows, Federer completed that feat last month, but amazingly although Newlife passed away since the bet was placed, he had already written to the bookie, William Hill, asking that any winnings should be paid to Oxfam. So, after Federer beat Andy Murray last month, 101,840 was paid to Oxfam on Newlifes posthumous behalf.
A BP PETROL station sign took the full power of a bouncing tyre last month. The tyre was recorded on CCTV causing a massive hole in the sign off the southbound carriageway of the A1 in Nottinghamshire. Luckily no one was hurt when it hit but strangely the tyre has never been found and the owner still hasnt come forward. James Kemp, BP area manager, said: It could have been fatal if someone was in its path. It hit the grass verge in front of our forecourt and bounced straight through our sign destroying the BP Helios. Its aim was incredible.
A SWEARING parrot was the cause of neighbours calling the police in Govan near Glasgow last month. Surprised officers were attending a noisy neighbour complaint, and were surprised to be confronted by Pepe, a yellow-headed Amazon parrot and culprit. When officers turned up to the address in Govan they found Pepe the parrot, who used to live in a taxi office. The bird shouting out phrases such as taxi for Govan Road, as well as more industrial language, reported the Daily Telegraph. Pepes embarrassed owner John McAlinden said: He mainly shouts out bookings, like taxi for Govan and taxi for Lidl. He also says things like car one, car two and 10-4. Its hilarious. I was very surprised at first because I was told he didnt speak much. But sometimes its like living in a cab office. He also uses a fair bit of industrial language, which is a bit near the knuckle. I think he may have become stressed by his move but Im now giving him some drops to try to calm him down. He added: Hes a bit of a handful and Im sorry if hes caused any upset to my neighbours. Hopefully hes learned his lesson and will settle down a bit. A Strathclyde police spokeswoman said: We were contacted by a member of the public who had made a complaint about noise.

Brands lawyer, Robert Glass, told Reuters his client could complete the community service at any charity or agency anywhere, whether it be California or England. An August 31 hearing date was set to report on the status of the community service. New Orleans police arrested Brand on March 15 after a photographer accused the comedian of grabbing his iPhone and tossing it through a window, breaking the glass in a downtown law office. Brand was charged with one count of misdemeanour criminal damage to property and released shortly after his arrest. The charge of simple criminal damage to property valued under $500 carries a potential penalty of up to six months in prison and/or a $500 fine. Brand has had other brushes with the law, including in 2010, when he was arrested for an attack on a paparazzo at a Los Angeles airport. GHOST WOMAN caught on mans animal camera. Dick Williams, a wildlife lover, decided to set up a camera outside his Powys home to film nocturnal life in the area. But, to his amazement, a ghostly figure of a woman was caught on film wandering around his garden. Williams, of Churchstoke, said he was gobsmacked when he saw the film, reported Metro. It showed the woman, wearing slippers and a dressing gown, walk on a path through his back garden at about 10pm. Williams, 88, added: We spoke to the police and they took a photo round to local nursing homes, but we havent heard anything back yet. We wondered whether it was someone sleepwalking or someone living at the local residential home. I dont think its a ghost. I dont believe in them. Of course, people can make up their own minds.

WILL BRITAINS EU membership be one more casualty of the continents devastating debt crisis? Senior British lawmakers warned last month that Britain must consider a future outside the European Union as the 17 members of Europes currency union, which the UK has stayed out of, develop closer fiscal and political ties. Plans to exit the EU a policy once advocated primarily on Britains political fringe are rapidly gathering mainstream appeal and could dominate debate at the scheduled 2015 national election. I do not believe that Britains national interest is served by its current relationship with the EU, Britains former Defense Secretary Liam Fox said in a speech offering support to growing calls for a national vote on the issue. SKEPTICAL Opinion polls show most Britons are deeply skeptical about closer European ties and eager to win back national decision making powers lost to Brussels. Britain last held a vote on its membership of the EU, then the European Economic Community, in 1975. Fox said that European nations which dont use the euro currency should press for much looser ties to their neighbors, or contemplate quitting the bloc altogether. However, Prime Minister Cameron said euroskeptics were wrong that the only option for Britain to defend its interests was to quit the EU altogether. CHANGES Cameron pointed to his decision in December to veto changes to the European Union treaty, when he was the only leader among the bloc to refuse to endorse a plan for nations to submit their budgets for central review and limit the deficits they can run. Ex-government minister John Redwood, like Fox also a member of Camerons euroskeptic Conservative Party, said many British people would welcome a chance to vote to leave the European Union. Britains main opposition Labour Party has suggested it could include plans for a national referendum in its manifesto for the 2015 election. However, the Liberal Democrats junior members of the coalition government with Camerons Conservatives are staunch defenders of European ties.

Ticket Backlash Overshadows Games
OLYMPIC organisers scrambled to quell a backlash over depressing TV images of half-empty stands at the London Olympics as a government minister said an urgent inquiry had been launched to Sebastian Coe identify just who had failed to show up and why. Sports fans from all over Britain who had been charmed by the Olympic publicity offensive but let down by a complex ballot system for the 8.8 million tickets, have been outraged by footage of empty seats at key venues including Wimbledon, one of the hottest tickets in world tennis. Chairman Sebastian Coe, who threatened to name and shame sponsors that did not fill their seats, said missing spectators were mostly officials from international sports federations, other Olympic officials, their families and friends. It doesnt obviously appear to be a sponsorship issue at the moment, Coe said, after Culture Minister Jeremy Hunt said he thought the vacant seats had belonged to sponsors. Coe, a former Olympic gold medallist on the track, said that only eight percent of allocated tickets went to big corporate sponsors such as Visa and Coca-Cola and that 75 percent of tickets were in the hands of the public. Sponsors P&G, Visa, McDonalds and Coca-Cola have all issued statements reassuring officials, fans and athletes that their allocated tickets have been and will be used by winners of promotional contests, partners, customers and employees. Organisers said they were already in touch with the International Olympic Committee to discover who failed to show up and why. British Olympic Association Chairman Colin Moynihan told a briefing on July 29 one solution might be a 30-minute rule whereby fans would be allowed to take up vacant seats if spectators were late or did not arrive.
A JUDGE has rejected a bid by residents of a London high- rise to stop having their building used as a missile base during the Olympic Games. Judge Charles Haddon-Cave said last month that Britains Ministry of Defense acted legally when it decided to put the weapons atop the Fred Wigg Tower. Residents of the 17-storey tower, about two miles from the Olympic Park in east London, say the missile battery could make their homes a terrorist target. But the judge said the missiles presented no real threat. The building is one of six sites where the British military plans to place missiles as part of security for the games.

JOE COCKER OBE has been keeping us Up Where We Belong for at least the last 50 years! With a Little Help from My Friends is what Joe will be getting when he opens at The Greek Theatre in LA August 15; Harveys Stateline Casino, Nevada August 17; Sleep Train Pavilion in Concord, CA August 18; and the Santa Barbara Bowl August 19 where Karen and I will attend. Born John Robert Cocker May 20, 1944 in Crookes, Sheffield in Yorkshire, he became a British Rock and Blues singer in the 60s with a gritty voice and idiosyncratic arm movements, while performing. He got his start playing Skiffle in the pubs of Sheffield, a place like a lot of us feel most at home. Performing cover songs of Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, and Lonnie Donegan, one of his first big gigs was support group for the Rolling Stones at Sheffield City Hall in 1964. Producer Denny Cordell of Procol Harem, Moody Blues, and Georgie Fame saw Joe and the Grease Band and persuaded them to go to London and appear at the famed Marquee Club. This was when Cocker entered the big time with a groundbreaking rearrangement of With a Little Help from My Friends which made the Top Ten British charts for 13 weeks, eventually reaching number one (Jimmy Page played lead guitar). After touring in 1968 with The Who and in the Fall with Gene Pitney and Marmalade in early 1969, Joe and Grease embarked on their first US tour that same Spring with their album going Gold. They played at several festivals: Newport Rock, the Denver Pop, and finally, flying by helicopter into the ultimate
Joe Cocker. Photo: Nederlander.com festival of the last Century, Woodstock. I had just arrived in America at the height of the Vietnam war and the youth were rebelling. Everyone stopped everything they were doing and converged on Woodstock, in our case, only to be turned away by the police. So we just held our own party! It was shortly after that that Joe recorded She Came in Through the Bathroom Window and Something. Then dissolved the Grease Band as he was unwilling to do another US tour. In 1970, despite Joes reluctance to be on the road, an American tour had already been booked so he hastily formed a new band christened Mad Dogs and Englishmen with a group of some 30 musicians that included pianist and bandleader Leon Russell, three drummers, and backup singers Rita Coolidge and Claudia Lennear, touring 48 cities, enjoying several chart hits with Cry Me a River and Feeling Alright by Dave Mason. I was to meet Joe Cocker several times a few years later in the Valley (LA) and through a mutual friend, the late British comedian Jonathan Moore, and before Joes enormously popular Up Where We Belong with Jennifer Warnes in 82, I was putting a couple of Pub shows together and asked if Joe would like to come down and give a little
support. Not only did he show up, he liked the band so much he got up and sang half the night, much to the pleasure and amazement of both band and audience alike, as Joe and pub music just go together. For me, Joe is one of the nicest, most genuine Brits Ive ever had the pleasure of spending time with. The rest is history. On June 3, 2002 Joe performed With a Little Help from My Friends accompanied by Phil Collins on drums and Queen guitarist Brian May at a concert on the grounds of Buckingham Palace to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty awarded him the OBE on her honors list for service to music. To celebrate his award he played two concerts in London and Sheffield. So with luck well meet him again at the Santa Barbara Bowl August 19. economy and establish their individualities in the three years that remain before they must go to the country. REFUSED The trouble is that the economy refuses to behave and respond as they want. If anything, things are getting worse despite all the pain that is being inflicted on a patient electorate. The Coalition endlessly blames Gordon Brown and Tony Blair for the countrys economic travails which it hopes will screen their own political infighting. The latest scandal concerns Barclays Bank rigging interest rates the LIBOR to increase their profits during the financial crisis which started in 2008. Cameron and Labour leader, Ed Miliband, clashed over what sort of inquiry they wanted. Cameron using his built-in majority secured a parliamentary inquiry. George Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, is confident that what will emerge is evidence of the last governments collusion with the banks in some sort of illegal activity. Noisy scenes in the Commons culminated in Osborne accusing Ed Balls, the Shadow Chancellor, of leaning on the banks using the Bank of England. DENIED However, it looks as though there is no evidence that Osbornes charge has any truth in it: appearing before a Commons committee, Paul Tucker, the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England denied this happened. It has probably cost him his chances of ever being Governor of the Bank of England! Balls called for an apology. Osborne refused, convinced that something will emerge. This is the sort of fractiousness that has crept into the House of Commons. Happily, they have all gone off now for the summer holidays so there is at least a temporary lull in hostilities. Do not expect the truce to hold. Everybody is at everybody elses throats. john.polley1@ntlworld.com

In practice, this has rarely been an issue. Back in 1946 parliament introduced a system of guillotining which restricted the time spent in discussion of contentious bills. For the first fifty years only 67 bills were guillotined but in the first six years alone of Tony Blairs reign it happened to 94 bills. On July 10, 2012, Nick Clegg thus wanted to win two votes. The first was acceptance of the principle of House of Lords reform. This sailed through with Labour support though nearly 100 Tories voted against, Camerons worst backbench rebellion since he came to power. The second motion seeking the guillotine was the key one since opponents could kill the bill merely by filibuster (and at the same time wreck all other parliamentary business). RESEARCHED After careful research by the Tory and Lib Dem whips, Cameron ducked out. The whips discovered Tory resistance was so extensive and resolute that defeat was inevitable so he simply didnt bother to seek the second vote. The Lib Dems were hopping mad. In the past couple of years their support for the Tories has seen them almost wiped out as a political party in the country with their leader, Nick Clegg, singled out for the most vicious of attacks. Above all there is the single issue of student tuition fees which the Lib Dems promised to scrap but which they helped the Coalition to increase three-fold. This has not been forgotten or forgiven. In most peoples eyes, they have achieved nothing other than keeping an unpopular government in power. BLAME Now the Tories attitude towards them is changing and becoming publicly obvious.
They blame Lib Dems for not supporting Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Secretary, over the sale of BSkyB to the Murdochs. They are now infuriated by the threat that if the Tories didnt push wholeheartedly for Lords reform, the Lib Dems would block David Camerons constituency boundary re-organisation which reduces the number of MPs from 650 to 600. It is calculated that his measure will hand the Tories an extra 20 seats. At a rough guess about a third of Conservative MPs would happily ditch the Coalition and most Lib Dems would agree with them. However, the parties are joined at the hip with each of them fearing a wipe-out if they cant somehow wrest back control of the

A BRITISH man has been extradited to Arizona from Scotland to face trial for illegally exporting and distributing chemicals used to make methamphetamine in the state, authorities said last month. Brian Howes, 48, was ordered to remain in custody on suspicion of 82 drug-related crimes pending a September 5 trial under an order issued in federal court. Howes, who faces charges that include unlawful distribution of listed chemicals and conspiracy, arrived in Arizona last month. Howes of West Lothian, Scotland, was indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2007 in Arizona and accused of using his company website to illegally sell and distribute two regulated chemicals important in the production of the popular drug. Authorities say Howes was the founder and owner of an Internet business that provided 6,900 grams of red phosphorus and 4,850 grams of iodine to customers throughout the state from 2004 to 2006.

Theres always a risk, but there is nothing specific this year. We monitor it on a daily basis, possibly more so on this year of the Olympics. The climax to the 90-minute show will be an orchestral re-enactment of the queens coronation in 1953, the year after she succeeded her father George VI to the throne. A towering cathedral forms the backdrop and projected images, church bells and voice-overs vividly recall that momentous event, Allfrey said, with a grand musical finale and the James Bond tune Diamonds Are Forever as fireworks light up the night sky. Reuters version, the Mark 2. It was based on the Mark 1, but the result was different in many ways, both aesthetically and mechanically. Improvements to the design and modern materials resulted in a reduced overall weight. The interior was completely redesigned but retained its luxury and elegance with such amenities as leather and wood veneer. The attention to detail both inside and out, only amplified the ambiance of sophistication. Under the hood again was the XK engine which had continued to prove itself as a reliable and capable power plant, the same that had won at LeMans in 1951 and 1953. The XK engine was now enlarged to 3.8 litres producing around 220 horsepower. It was the improved styling of the Mark 2 that made the most impact over its predecessor, the differences were subtle and were actually quite hard to spot, the main one being an increase in glass area which made the car seem more spacious inside, and a new dashboard was added. It was these subtle differences however that changed a great looking motor car into a masterpiece, a work of art. No saloon car either before or after the reign of the Jaguar Mark 2 has come close to matching its elegance. Although it is difficult to improve on perfection one company did. It was Coombs who first modified the Mark 2 for competition, these mods were mainly mechanical to prepare the cars for racing, but one modification was to reduce the width of the rear wheel spats to allow for increased brake cooling but the cars looked so much better because of this and many Mark 2 owners had the Coombs modifications done for road use. With the success of this classic the now financially sound Jaguar company embarked on the E-Type which debuted in 1961, it is due to the Jaguar Mark 2 that this famous sports car came about. It was Sir William Lyons maxim of space grace and pace the Jaguar Mark 2 had it all. Happy Motoring.
THROUGHOUT the years the most revered motor cars have been sports cars. It seems like definitive automotive styling has lent itself to the sleek curvaceous flowing lines that are perceived by us as speed. Lets face it if a car looks fast it also looks good, it is the reason that the most magnificently styled motor cars over the years have been sports machines and racing cars. There is a different mind-set in the designers eyes when developing a saloon car, with space and comfort being the priority. But, there has been one saloon car at least that looked fast and yet met all the requirements of being an extremely comfortable four door luxury family car. It is probably the most beautiful saloon car ever produced and it paved the way for one of the very finest sports cars in history as well as propelling the parent company into prominence throughout the world. The company was Jaguar, and this magnificently styled and engineered motor saloon was the Mark 2. Even today the Jaguar Mk2 looks well and still looks fast. Even by todays standards this car is a performer in the 1960s she was unparalleled. The Mk2 was powered by the very best engine of its day, a proven Le Mans winner, and a power plant which served every Jaguar motor car from 1948 until the 1970s XJ6. This engine was the iconic straight 6-cylinder twin overhead cam XK. The seeds for the new engine were sown around 1943 when, with an eventual allied victory apparently assured when William Lyons used the time spent fire-watching at his Coventry factory to spell out to his tiny engineering team his post-war ambitions for car production. In the 1940s designing an all twin overhead cam engine was radical stuff. Previously nearly all twin ohc engines had been seen only in expensive, low-volume or pure racing cars. Yet here was Lyons keen to use this
exotic format in a big, soft, refined touring car which would be produced in relatively large numbers, and be driven everyday by mechanically inexpert owners who would expect to have their cars serviced by the local town garage. The car for which this new engine was destined for was the Mark VII touring saloon. From the drawing board came a succession of experimental engines, each tested and evaluated in a disciplined and highly-systematic manner. It was finally perfected after the stroke was increased and the 3.4 litre XK engine was born. Lyons didnt initially fit the new engine in the Mark VII as he wanted to try the engine out in a test car and from this test car the XK120 sports car was born. 200 of these cars was the figure planned for use in testing and racing, but such was the demand for this new sports car Jaguar decided on serious production. The XK120 name was derived from the XK engine, and the fact that it could reach 120mph in 1948, the time of its introduction made it the fastest standard production car in the world. Eventually the 3.4 litre XK engine was introduced into the Mark VII in 1950. The success of the XK-engined Mark VII and the sporty XK120 prompted Lyons to try the midrange car market which brought about the Jaguar Mark 1 which was basically a smaller version of the Mark VII. It also had a smaller version of the 3.8 litre XK engine as it was bored out and stroked to 2.4 litres. Although having a family resemblance to the larger Mark VII, the Mark I differed in many ways. Most importantly, it was the first Jaguar with
unitary construction of body and chassis. The cars independent front suspension featured double wishbones, coil springs, and an anti-roll bar. The front suspension sub frame was mounted on the body by rubber mounts. The live rear axle was positively located by quarter elliptic leaf springs, trailing arms and a Panhard rod in a manner reminiscent of the Jaguar D-type. This was a significant improvement over the other saloons and XK sports cars. It was an instant success on its debut in 1955 and went on to supersede the bigger Mark VII in terms of sales. Later an option was added to fit the 3.4 version of the XK engine into the Mark 1 prompting increased sales. Mark 1 3.4-litre saloons competed successfully in many rallies, touring car, and saloon car races. Just a few notable drivers included Stirling Moss, Mike Hawthorn, Tommy Sopwith, and Roy Salvadori. It gained certain notoriety when on January 22, 1959 former motor racing world champion Hawthorn was killed in an accident involving his own highly-tuned 3.4-litre, Mark 1 on the Guildford bypass in Surrey, England. However in 1959 Jaguar decided on retiring the Mark 1 in favor of a more updated
DEAR READERS in North America, How I envy you reading this column somewhere with the sun shining and enjoying its warmth. I am bundled up on a couch looking out to raindrops clinging on an empty clothesline. Its on a soft wet July afternoon in the countryside in a village in County Carlow at a cousins house, and Im very thankful to have a roof over my head listening to the radio playing folk times. I am an hour away from urban Dublin with its incredible mix of wildlife, from humans to scampering foxes by night and daytime sightings of rats in the recession challenged boomtoom. This months book review is courtesy of the bookshelf of a family member who enjoys the outdoors when he grabs time away from keeping the roofs of Dublin patched. I found two books by Collins published by Harper Collins Publishers at www.collins.co.uk. The first one is the 2002 edition of the British Wildlife with 512 pages packed in a small paperback with over 500 pictures of British wildlife describing 500 species of bird, wild flower, tree, wild animal, insect, butterfly, moth, reptile and amphibian. An incredible ID fact file listings to explore the UK after the international wildness of celebrating the Queens 60 years jubilee and hosting the Olympics. Next is the Complete Irish Wildlife by Paul Sterry with an introduction by Derek Mooney. First published in 2004. The essential photographic guide is 319 pages filled with over 1,000 colour photographs illustrating every species described. So what if the sun is on holidays while you visit the fair city, forget about fair weather relatives and so called friends, dont fret about overpriced concerts and closed tourist sites due to budget cuts you are one with the earth with these guides. Nature prevails if we open our eyes and ears to its presence. The bats fly for free along the riverbanks as one strolls with a cousin walking his aging dog. Turn off the DVD, get out of the house no matter the weather and enjoy the wildlife. We have still so much to learn from nature which blooms where we are planted. OBITUARIES
We may live without poetry, music and art; We may live without conscience and live without heart; We may live without friends; we may live without books; But civilized man cannot live without cooks.
Owen Meredith
TRUE, TRUE, and some better than others. Not everyone likes or can cook, and I do understand that, but I cannot ever remembering not liking it. I dont think Domestic Science or any cooking is now taught at schools, which is a great shame, and todays society in general tend to eat out far more than we used to, and unfortunately much of that is all fast food places. Anyway, I wasnt sure what to feature for this month, and decided on a personal favourite of mine, that really isnt British, except it has lots of potatoes and cheese, always a fabulous combination. So I will try to get away with the fact that it has lots of cheese in it, and because Cheddar cheese is a truly British cheese! Jane Grigson was one of Britains first classic food writers, in the early 50s on, and she made the statement which I agree with, that No other country has developed so rich a variety of excellent hard cheeses as England. Cheddar cheese was first made in the Somerset village of Cheddar on the edge of Sedgemoor, near the geological fault known as the cheddar gorge. It was the first English cheese to be made in a regular formula, and first became popular in the 17th century. Potatoes of course are an extremely versatile vegetable, and especially loved by the Scots and Irish. A few weeks ago, we had a pot luck evening with the Sarasota Brit Club, and I made a big portion of this, which was extremely well liked, and I had several requests for the recipe. I have made it several times through the years and it is always popular, also it can be made ahead of time, and if you dont want to
have the oven on the summer, it can also be micro-waved. So in my convoluted way, I am justifying this recipe to be eligible for British culture, even though I adapted it years ago when we were living in Wisconsin another great place for cheese!! So I hope you enjoy another of my versions for the great potato and cheese combination; I will warn you that it is not a low calorie dish! 3 lbs russet potatoes (about 9 medium), peeled and cut into small pieces 2 peeled garlic cloves 8 oz cream cheese, softened 2 Tbsp butter 1/2 cup sour cream 2 cups grated extra sharp cheddar cheese, and 1 cup grated cheddar cheese Salt and pepper 1 package 10oz frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry Place the garlic and potatoes in a large saucepan, cover with water. Cover, bring to a boil, and cook about 15-20 minutes until soft but not too done. Drain well. Return to pan, and mash potatoes and garlic with the cream cheese and butter. Add the sour cream, two cups grated cheese, salt and pepper and spinach. Stir until just mixed. Bake uncovered in a 350 degrees oven for 30 minutes, top with the remaining cheese and bake another 5-10 minutes until the cheese on top has melted. (If micro-waving, cook on high 10-15 minutes) Yield: 10-12 servings.

3. At Chelmsford however, the Aussies beat Essex by 179 runs. Australia 313-9 at 50 overs. Essex 134 all out. The Natwest ODIs series began at Lords with England winning by 15 runs. England 272-5 at 50 overs. Australia 257-9 at close. At the Kia-Oval, England won by six wickets. Australia 251-7 at 50 overs. England 252-4 at close. The third match at Edgbaston, was washed out without a ball bowled. England won the next game at Durham by eight wickets, taking a 3-0 lead and thus winning the series. Australia 200-9 at 50 overs. England 201-2 at close. The final game at Old Trafford saw the D/L method used to decide the result after rain caused delays with England winning by seven wickets. Australia 145-7 at 32 overs. England 138-3 at 27.1 overs. Mid-July, South Africa arrived for a three match Test series in England. They started two warm-ups with games at Taunton and Canterbury, where both matches were drawn. At age 42, his significance at the crease has waned considerably.Sri Lanka won their three Test match home series against Pakistan 1-0. The Sri Lankans won the first Test by 209 runs at Galle, but drew the other matches at Colombo and Pallekele. The European Track Championships in Helsinki, June 24-July 1, gave Britains Olympic hopefuls a chance to check out their strategies and work out any wrinkles before the big event. World 10,000m and 5,000m champion, Mo Farah, produced a gold medal in the 5,000m and thus a positive anticipation for the London Olympics. There was gold for Robbie Grabarz in the long jump, and gold too, for Rhys Williams in the 400m hurdles. Lynsey Sharp took silver in the 800m as did Jo Pavey, in the 10,000m, and the mens 4x400m relay squad. A bronze in the 200m by Danny Talbot, brought Britains medal tally to seven. 18-year-old Adam Gemili ran a 10.05 in the 100m at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, that absolutely earned him a place on the British squad. Mark Webber of the Red-Bull Renault team won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, July 8, with Fernando Alonso second and team-mate Sebastian Vettel third. Top finishing Brit was Lewis Hamilton in eighth place. Alonso won the European Grand Prix at Valencia late June. picked his spots, and several time shook Haye. At the end of the fifth, Chisora (15-3) went down after a vicious combination, staggered to his feet, and was promptly savaged by the Hayemaker again. Amir Khans career took a jolt at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, July 14, when the unbeaten Danny Garcia (24-0) claimed his WBA light-welterweight crown after the Bolton man was halted in the fourth round. Khan (26-3) was caught by Garcia three times, and three times was on the canvas, before the ref intervened to stopped the fight. Its the second defeat in a row for the 25-year-old Khan, who lost a controversial bout with Lamont Petersen in December of last year. The 12 clubs of the Scottish Premier League voted 10-1, with one abstention to block the newly bought out Rangers, membership of Scotlands premier soccer division. Charles Greens Sevco Consortium then applied to join the Scottish Football League with an eye on a place in the first division. The SFL voted overwhelmingly to accept Rangers application, but voted that the former powerhouse of Scottish football should start in Division three, and not Division one. Charles Green accepted the decision and said, We just want to get back to playing football again. Many of the clubs in Scottish Division Three have gate capacities of only 3,000-4,000, and the mind boggles should Rangers supporters arrive en-masse. Turmoil off the pitch continued, when many of Rangers players refused to sign for the new Sevco Group and found other clubs. Those on the move included, Steven Naismith, Steven Whittaker, Steve Davis, Lyle Lafferty and Jamie Ness. Early in the month, coach Ally McCoist, was reputed to have just six players with regular first team experience. Stuart Pearce, the coach of the Great Britain Olympic soccer team chose to leave out David Beckham from the 18 man squad. He chose Ryan Giggs as captain, Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards instead. Pearce selected a team of 13 Englishmen, and five Welshmen, with the option of three players over the age of 23. The 37-year-old, LA Galaxys David Beckham has made no secret of his desire to play for the first GB Olympic soccer team ever, but coach Pearce made it known that he would not pick his squad using sentiment, but rely on form and merit. He informed Beckham with a personal phone call. Diego Maradonna was sacked by Al Wasl, the United Arab Emirate club, he has led for the last twelve months. After concluding the season finishing eighth in a league of twelve clubs, the whole board resigned in disgust. The new boards first dramatic move was to terminate the Argentinians contract which still had a year to run. The qualifying rounds of the new 2012-13 European competitions began last month, though British success was thin on the ground. In the first qualifying round of the Champions League, Northern Ireland champions Linfield, tied two goalless encounters with B36 of the Faroe Islands, but went through on a 4-3 penalty shootout. In the second qualifying round, first leg, July 1718, the Ulster side struggled in Cyprus and went down 3-0 to AEL. The New Saints, the Welsh Champions, drew a goalless encounter at home in their first leg with Helsingborgs IF of Sweden. The first qualify round of the Europa League saw the three Welsh clubs exit. Bangor City tied 0-0 at home against Zimbru of Moldova, but lost the away leg 2-1. Llanelli managed a 1-1 home draw with KuPS of Finland, but had lost the away leg 2-1. Cefn Druids tied MYPA 0-0 at home, but crashed 5-0 in Finland. Ulsters Cliftonville and Crusaders did not have much luck either and both were knocked out. California Rowing Club won the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta last month, securing the last of three titles for American crews on finals day at the historic annual event. The California crew, made up of oarsmen who just missed out on selection for the London Olympics, beat Brown by 1 lengths on the River Thames to win the mens coxed eights, widely considered the most prestigious race at the event. Brown lost the other all-American final too as freshmen from the University of Washington won the Temple Challenge Cup by three lengths to regain the title the school won in 2010. It was the fifth boat from the United States in the past six years to win the student coxed eights at Henley. Harvard won the Ladies Challenge Plate by overtaking Leander Club of England in the final few meters.
THE 126 th Wimbledon, June 25-July 7, witnessed Andy Murray become the first Briton to reach a mens Wimbledon singles final since 1938, and looking to be the first British singles winner since Fred Perry in 1933. His clash with Roger Federer provided a scintillating and tense game of extraordinary tennis, that brought the nation to a halt as the population crowded the nearest television set. The Dunblane Scot took the first set, but Federer, continued to be dangerous and slowly began taking hold of the match shot by shot. The Swiss player would win his seventh Wimbledon crown and his 17th Major title edging Andy Murray, 5-7,6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Interviewed directly after the final Murray joked Im getting closer, but he was obviously heartbroken and close to tears. Still seeking his first Grand Slam win, Murray reached his third Grand Slam final with victories over Nicolay Davydenko, Ivo Karlovic, Marcos Baghdatis, Marin Cilic, and David Ferrer while beating Jo Wilfried Tsongas of France in the semi-finals. Eleven Britons commenced the first round of the singles contest but as the first week concluded only Andy Murray was left flying the flag. Of the six women, three made it to the second round with Elena Baltacha, facing the 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvita who eased past the Briton. Anne Keothavong met the French Open finalist Sara Errani of Italy, and never got going with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat. Heather Watson, the 20-year-old from Guernsey, beat Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic in the first round, becoming the first British woman to win on Centre Court since Jo Durie back in 1985. She beat American qualifier Jamie Lee Hampton in the second, but the third seed, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, put Watson out 6-0, 6-2, in the third. A British woman has not reached fourth round Wimbledon since Sam Smith in 1998. Serena Williams captured the Wimbledon womens crown beating Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets and then won the womens doubles title assisted by sister Venus; who has been suffering with Sjoren syndrone and has played little tennis of late. She crashed out 6-1, 6-3, in the first round of singles to Elena Vesnina of Russia. Sheffield based Jonathan Marray, went into the history books becoming the first Brit to win a Wimbledon doubles title in 76 years, when he and partner Frederik Nielson of Denmark, beat Horia Tecau of Germany, and Robert Lindstedt of Sweden 4-6, 6-4 ,7-6, 6-7, 6-3 in the final. On the Brit mens singles side, James Ward beat Pablo Andujar of Spain, before losing a tough five setter again the American, Mardy Fish. Three other Britons failed to make it out of the first round. Newly crowned French Open champion Rafael Nadal, was stunned by Lukas Rosel, in a five set upset, that saw the 100th ranked Czech player oust the Spaniard in the second round. Australia arrived for their five match ODIs series against England, with a couple of warm-up games late June. They opened at a rainy Grace Road against Leicestershire winning by 102 runs using the D/L method. Australia 241-8. Leicestershire 136 all out. At Stormont, against Ireland, they did not get much practice after rain interfered and the match was abandoned with Ireland 36-
Volvo Ocean Race (formerly the Whitbreadround-the-World-Race) where thousands of sailing fans welcomed the fleet as it arrived after its final short leg from LOrient, France, to Galway. The New Zealand-Spanish yacht Camper, crossed the line first at Irelands third largest city, but Groupama skippered by Franck Cammas, had already attained an uncatchable points lead to secure victory in the 11th running of this ocean race. Over a ten day period, Galway attracted nearly a million visitors to the Race Village and Global Village, where the six, seventy foot racing yachts rested after their epic voyage around the globe. The final games of the international summer tours were concluded early last month. England finished their South African tour with a 14-14 tie against the Springboks, Scotland edged Samoa 17-16, New Zealand squashed Ireland 60-0. Italy beat the USA 30-10, and the French won 49-10 in Argentina. Sheffields Danny Willett witnessed his name etched on his very first golfing trophy, after winning the BMW International in Cologne, after playing the eighteenth hole four times in a play-off with Marcus Fraser of Australia. The pair had both finished on 11 under 277 Persistence must be Jamie Donaldsons middle name, as he played his 255th tournament without a win at the Irish Open at Royal Portrush, that concluded July 1. This time however, the 36-year-old Welshman birdied five of the last nine holes on the final round and took his first title with a 18 under 270,four strokes ahead of the field. Same weekend, Tiger Woods found his winning ways where an eight under 276, saw him claim the AT&T National crown at Bethesda, Maryland, for the fourth time in his career. British journeyman Roger Chapman, won the US Senior Open at Lake Orion, Michigan, July 15, coming from behind on the last round to win with a 10 under 270, two strokes ahead of the field. The Briton collected a winners purse of half-a-million dollars. Two months ago, he won the US Senior PGA Championship too. The 53-yearold Chapman who lives in Ascot, had a fairly non-descript record on the European tour winning a few minor tournaments around the year 2000. His persistence and love for the game is finally paying off. Same weekend, Jeev Milka Singh won the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart, where he beat Francisco Molinari in a play-off after both players had finished on a 17 under 271. Singh was four behind going into the final round. Wladimir Klitscho retained his WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles at Berne, Switzerland July 7, after a sixth round stoppage of Tony Thompson (36-3). The Ukrainian (57-3) had beaten the 40-year-old Maryland fighter back in 2008. A massive right hand punch had Thompson shaken in the fifth, and the American succumbed to the canvas in the following round where his corner decided enough was enough. Former WBA champion David Haye finished off former British heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora in the fifth round at Upton Park, July 14, where on a rainy night some 30,000 plus gathered to see this advertised grudge fight. Chisora weighed in at a hefty 247lbs, while Haye was 210lbs, the lightest hed been in six fights. Chisora showed he could take a punch as the Londoner (26-2)

WEST HAM UNITED have agreed a 2m loan fee with Liverpool for Andy Carroll reports the BBC. However, it is thought the 23-year-old Carroll does not wish to leave Liverpool on a permanent basis.

DUNDEE WILL replace Rangers in the Scottish Premier League after the Glasgow side were demoted following their financial crisis, clubs decided last month. Dundee finished runner-up last season in the Scottish First Division, the second tier of the game in Scotland. Rangers have been told to relaunch in the fourth tier after collapsing under their debt pile, breaking the stranglehold they and city rivals Celtic have had on the Scottish game for decades.
WATFORD has appointed Gianfranco Zola as its new manager after the League Championship clubs new Italian owners sacked Sean Dyche. Watford, which plays in the division below the Premier League, says the 46-year-old former Italian international and West Ham manager joined on a two-year contract. TOTTENHAM defender Ledley King has retired from football at the age of 31 due to a chronic left knee injury that has troubled him throughout his career. King said that I have missed a lot of football over the years, but the Spurs fans have always been patient and incredibly supportive with me during difficult periods. London Olympics 2012 Newsemg Armitstead Takes Silver, Heartbreak For Cavendish
LIZZIE ARMITSTEAD played her part in a thrilling finish to the cycling road race only to be out-powered in the finishing sprint down the Mall July 29. Armitstead showed great humility and joy in winning Britains first medal, and was thrilled to be taking home a silver. Armitstead told reporters in the pouring rain: Im so happy we got the ball rolling for Team GB, The previous day had a brought a big disappointment in the mens road race, where British favourite Mark Cavendish and the British team finished well down the field. The winner Kazakh Alexandre Vinokourov was part of a 32-man breakaway that was never caught by the British team that seemed to have the race under control until then. Cavendish paid tribute to his team matess efforts. I can be proud of how the lads rode today. Im proud of my country as there was incredible support. The guys are sat there, they are spent. They have got nothing left in the tank.

BRADLEY WIGGINS was greeted by thousands of Union Jack-waving fans on the Champs Elysees when he claimed the 99th edition of the Tour de France to become the first British winner of the famous race July 21. Wiggins finished safe in the bunch on the 20th and last stage, a 120-km ride from Rambouillet, as he helped his Sky team mate and fellow Briton Mark Cavendish to victory. What a finish, that was something, Mark won the stage after we led him out in the finale. Wonderful, wonderful, Wiggins told reporters. Asked about making history, Wiggins added: Ive got to start getting used to that now which is strange. Its mission complete. RETURN Next year, pure climbers Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck are expected to return to the race after a doping suspension and injury respectively. A potentially hillier route next July could also threaten Wiggins domination, as could Team Sky rival Chris Froome who finished second this year.

caused him to drop strokes at each of the last four holes, allowing Els to slip in through the back door and lift the Claret Jug with a twounder-par 68 and a seven-under total of 273. Scotts sad 75 meant he had to settle for second place on 274, three shots ahead of former world number one Tiger Woods (73), whose hopes were dashed by an ugly triple-bogey at the sixth, and his fellow American Brandt Snedeker (74).
