Moments later, the 86-year-old monarch herself stood solemnly while a childrens choir serenaded her with God Save the Queen, and members of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force raised the Union Jack. Much of the opening ceremony was an encyclopedic review of British music history, from a 1918 Broadway standard adopted by the West Ham soccer team to The Whos My Generation to Bohemian Rhapsody, by still another Queen. The evening started with fighter jets streaming red, white and blue smoke and roaring over the stadium, packed with a buzzing crowd of 60,000 people. An explosion of fireworks against the London skyline and Paul McCartney leading a singalong were to wrap up the threehour opening ceremony masterminded by one of Britains most successful filmmakers, Oscar winner Danny Boyle. SPECTACULAR Boyle led off his spectacular in his favored medium: A movie depicted a high-speed flyover of the Thames, the river that winds like a vein through London and was the gateway for the citys rise over the centuries as a great global hub of trade and

industry. The rush of images showed a cricket match, the London Tube and the roaring, abundant seas that buffet and protect this island nation set to a pulsating soundtrack including snippets of the Sex Pistols version of God Save the Queen a antiestablishment punk anthem once banned by the BBC. To open the ceremony, children popped balloons with each number from 10 to 1, leading a countdown that climaxed with Bradley Wiggins, the newly crowned Tour de France champion. Wearing his race-winners yellow jersey, Wiggins rang a 23-ton Olympic Bell from the same London foundry that made Big Ben and Philadelphias Liberty Bell. Its thunderous chime echoed around the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium. Bells in Britain have traditionally pealed to celebrate the end of war and the crowning of kings and queens, and now for the opening of a 17-day festival of sports. The show then shifted to a portrayal of Britain that Britons cling to a place of meadows, farms, sport on village greens, picnics and Winnie-the-Pooh, AA Milnes bear who has delighted generations of British children tucked warmly in bed. But the British ideal to quote poet William Blake, of Englands green and pleasant land then took a darker, grittier turn. The set was literally torn asunder, the hedgerows and farm fences carried away, as Boyle shifted to the industrial transformation that revolutionized Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries, the foundation for an empire that reshaped world history. Belching chimneys rose where only moments earlier sheep had trod.

Boyle had earlier told reporters: This is not specific to a country; this is across all countries, and the fallen from all countries are celebrated and remembered. Because, obviously, one of the penalties of this incredible force of change that happened in a hundred years was the industrialization of war, and the fallen, he said. You know, millions fell. Cheeky Scottish Beer Markets With Anti-Olympic Message
Newlife, from Oxfordshire, placed the 1,520 bet in 2003 and was 59 when he died. Andrew Barton, from Oxfam, told BBC Radio 5 live that it had been a difficult match to watch because his loyalties were split. I was just sitting there watching the tennis and I kept finding myself calling for Murray, particularly in that long game in the third set. And then my head is telling me: Andrew, remember Oxfam gets the money if Federer wins. Spokesman for the bookmaker Graham Sharpe has described the wager as unique. William Hill said it had already paid out 16,750 to Oxfam from another bet placed by Newlife, of 250 at 66/1, that Federer would win 14 Grand Slam events.

NOT TOO many Olympians will be seeking the new Scottish beer that purports to contain eight illegal performance enhancing ingredients. BrewDog says its limited edition ale is designed to undermine global sponsorship for the London Olympics. It contains creatine, guarana, lycii berries, kola nut, Gingko, matcha tea, maca powder and steroids all banned for professional athletes. The stunt follows controversy over restrictive sponsorship deals involving major players such as McDonalds and Coca-Cola. James Watt, cofounder of BrewDog said: It seems a beer laced with performance enhancing ingredients isnt actually illegal, but it is definitely frowned upon. Never Mind the Anabolics is a thorn in the side of the biggest corporate beast spawned this century. This is the craft beer community showing the sponsors of the games the finger in the best way we know how. A percentage of the proceeds of the craft beer is going towards a new surfboard for a surfing dog called Abbie.

Scottish Island Up For Sale At Only A Mere 3m

IF GETTING AWAY is of your liking, this Scottish island might be just the place for you. The 260 acre Kings Island or Eilaen Righ sits just 350 yards off the Scottish mainland and is accessible only by boat or helicopter. Sitting in Loch Craignish, the island boasts a four-bedroom house, a boat house, observatory for gazing at the Northern Lights, and its own helicopter facility. The island is frequently visited by a population of deer that swim over from the mainland and the sheltered waters also attract dolphins, otters, sea eagles and ospreys. There is an endless supply of salmon and lobsters that the new owner can exclusively fish for. The island is currently owned by City trader Christian Siva-Jothy, a former partner Eilaen Righ in Goldman Sachs, who has modernised the main house. Previous owners have included Sir Reginald Johnston, a retired tutor to Puyi, the last Chinese emperor, in the 1930s and then a retired Indian army officer. Ran Morgan, from the estate agents, said: The island is stunningly beautiful and surrounded by the most extraordinary land and seascapes. It is so peaceful and tranquil yet it only takes 10 minutes to travel by boat to reach the mainland or 25 minutes to fly by helicopter to Glasgow. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to live a bit of a Robinson Crusoe-type existence and be at one with nature. Downside? It will set you back 3m.

ACCORDING to a top British scientist aliens really do exist and resemble giant jellyfish. Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock worked with an artist to show what she thought alien life might look like. She believes the idea that extra-terrestrials will be humanoid is wrong and they are more likely to look like floating jelly fish with hanging onion-like sacks. Dr Aderin-Pocock added that our intergalactic cousins would have metallic surfaces for light absorption, orange bottoms for camouflage and buoyancy sacks to maintain altitude. But because the galaxy is so huge, she doubts whether humans will ever be able to contact them. Dr Aderin-Pocock, currently working on the observation instruments for the Aeolus satellite, is one of the first credible scientists to claim that aliens probably do exist. Her picture of an alien was commissioned to celebrate the launch of TV Channel Edens Science Month last month. Dr Aderin-Pocock explains: Our imaginations are naturally constrained by what we see around us, and the conventional wisdom has been that life needs water and is carbon-based. But some researchers are doing exciting work, playing with ideas such as silicon-based life forms.

PAINTING road signs has got more complicated, at least for some Swindon roadworkers. In not checking their right or left hands, some road painters left pedestrians in total confusion last month. At a crossing point over a busy road pedestrians are told to look left (which is correct), but an arrow points right (which is not only incorrect, but could be deadly). With passing buses walkers are supposed to look down the road from left to right, but anyone following the advice of the painted arrow could find themselves in serious trouble. Thankfully, whoever painted the markings got it right on the opposite side of the road with an arrow pointing right next to the warning look right.

FOLLOWING his girlfriend crashing their car, a man was ejected through the sunroof and somersaulted onto the ground and survived last month. Despite being thrown six feet from the car, the man was unscathed in the accident in Dudley, reported the Daily Telegraph. His girlfriend received only minor injuries when she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a garden wall. The crash was caught on the home-security cameras outside the home of pensioner Howard Hamilton. It was like something out of a police action film. IT WAS 10 years ago when Nick Newlife took a chance and placed over 1,500 on a bet, and was given 66-1 odds on Roger Federer winning seven Wimbledon Championships by 2019. As the world now knows, Federer completed that feat last month, but amazingly although Newlife passed away since the bet was placed, he had already written to the bookie, William Hill, asking that any winnings should be paid to Oxfam. So, after Federer beat Andy Murray last month, 101,840 was paid to Oxfam on Newlifes posthumous behalf.

A BP PETROL station sign took the full power of a bouncing tyre last month. The tyre was recorded on CCTV causing a massive hole in the sign off the southbound carriageway of the A1 in Nottinghamshire. Luckily no one was hurt when it hit but strangely the tyre has never been found and the owner still hasnt come forward. James Kemp, BP area manager, said: It could have been fatal if someone was in its path. It hit the grass verge in front of our forecourt and bounced straight through our sign destroying the BP Helios. Its aim was incredible.

A SWEARING parrot was the cause of neighbours calling the police in Govan near Glasgow last month. Surprised officers were attending a noisy neighbour complaint, and were surprised to be confronted by Pepe, a yellow-headed Amazon parrot and culprit. When officers turned up to the address in Govan they found Pepe the parrot, who used to live in a taxi office. The bird shouting out phrases such as taxi for Govan Road, as well as more industrial language, reported the Daily Telegraph. Pepes embarrassed owner John McAlinden said: He mainly shouts out bookings, like taxi for Govan and taxi for Lidl. He also says things like car one, car two and 10-4. Its hilarious. I was very surprised at first because I was told he didnt speak much. But sometimes its like living in a cab office. He also uses a fair bit of industrial language, which is a bit near the knuckle. I think he may have become stressed by his move but Im now giving him some drops to try to calm him down. He added: Hes a bit of a handful and Im sorry if hes caused any upset to my neighbours. Hopefully hes learned his lesson and will settle down a bit. A Strathclyde police spokeswoman said: We were contacted by a member of the public who had made a complaint about noise.

GHOST WOMAN caught on mans animal camera. Dick Williams, a wildlife lover, decided to set up a camera outside his Powys home to film nocturnal life in the area. But, to his amazement, a ghostly figure of a woman was caught on film wandering around his garden. Williams, of Churchstoke, said he was gobsmacked when he saw the film, reported Metro. It showed the woman, wearing slippers and a dressing gown, walk on a path through his back garden at about 10pm. Williams, 88, added: We spoke to the police and they took a photo round to local nursing homes, but we havent heard anything back yet. We wondered whether it was someone sleepwalking or someone living at the local residential home. I dont think its a ghost. I dont believe in them. Of course, people can make up their own minds.

Late Eva Rausings Husband Charged

HANS KRISTIAN Rausing, whose father made billions selling his stake in the Tetra Pak drinks-carton empire, has been charged in London with preventing the lawful burial of his wife Evas body, British police said last month. Rausing, one of Britains richest women may have lain dead for up to two months under a pile of bin bags, clothes and bed linen at least a metre deep, the court heard. Police found Eva Rausings decomposing body after gaining access to a secure annex buzzing with flies at the 50-room Chelsea mansion she shared with her billionaire husband. Rausing was last seen alive on May 3, suggesting she might have died more than two months before her body was found on July 9. Police went to search the house following her husbands arrest on suspicion of drug possession a tragic twist in the couples long-publicized battle with addiction. Hans Kristian Rausing was then arrested in connection with the death, too, though police say detectives are treating the death as unexplained after an autopsy failed to determine cause of death. Police said that Hans Kristian Rausing, 49, had been charged with preventing the lawful and decent burial of the body of Eva Rausing on or before the date of his arrest. The charge appeared to bolster reports in the British media saying that Eva Rausings body may have lain inside the house for some time. Because the charge is a common law offense, there is no maximum sentence, so a judge will decide if and how much jail time Hans Kristian Rausing would face if convicted. He could in theory face a life sentence, though recent cases involving similar charges have seen shorter sentences of several years. The Kemeny family said she had returned to the British capital to try to persuade her husband to join her in drug treatment in the US. Eva Rausings struggles with drugs were well known after she was caught trying to smuggle crack cocaine and heroin into the US Embassy in London in her handbag.

UK Sets Out Terms Of Urgent Libor Review

THE GOVERNMENT set out the terms for a revamp of a key interest rate rigged by a number of banks, including Barclays, saying on last month that urgent reform is required. The review will be conducted by Martin Wheatley, a top official at the Financial Services Authority regulator. It will look at how Libor is constructed, the feasibility of using actual trades, governance, the potential for alternative rate-setting processes and how to move to a new regime. Sanctions for abuse of Libor and whether the rate, currently supervised by its sponsor, the British Bankers Association, should be formally and directly regulated under UK law. Wheatley met members of the panel of banks that feed their date into the current rate-setting process on July 30. He will publish a discussion paper on August 10 to kick off a four-week public consultation with final conclusions by the end of September. Chancellor George Osborne will then consider how Wheatleys recommenda-

tions can be incorporated into a financial services draft law already making its way through parliament. The FSA and US authorities fined Barclays a record $453m for trying to influence Libor, the London interbank offered rate, which is the rate that banks are willing to lend to each other. UK lender Royal Bank of Scotland signalled in a Guardian newspaper interview that it too faced a fine for its role in the rate-rigging scandal as authorities across the world probe about 20 banks. HSBC bank said it has been named as a defendant in US private lawsuits linked to Libor and its Continental European counterpart Euribor. The FSA is being scrapped next year and replaced with two new regulators, one at the Bank of England, the other a standalone Financial Conduct Authority which Wheatley will head. Thomson Reuters Corp is the British Bankers Associations official agent for the daily calculation and publishing of Libor. The company has said it continues to support the BBA in calculating and distributing Libor rates. Reuters

UK Recession Deeper Than Previously Thought

OFFICIAL statisticians say Britains current recession is deeper than they had thought. The Office for National Statistics said last month that the economy shrank by 0.4 percent in the last quarter of 2011, a bigger dip than the 0.3 percent drop reported previously. However, the agency confirmed its earlier estimate that GDP fell by 0.3 percent in the first quarter of this year. Two consecutive quarters of contraction is the official definition of a recession. Analysts fear that the recession has continued in the current quarter, in part because of lost production during the extra holiday to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the Queen.

Barclays Agrees Final Settlement With Bob Diamond

BARCLAYS BANK has agreed a resignation package with ex-chief executive Bob Diamond where he will forfeit up to 20m in bonuses and incentives but receive a years salary, pension and other benefits worth 2m. Diamond resigned last month after Barclays was fined $453m by US and UK agencies for making false reports of its borrowing costs between 2005 and 2009. Barclays said that Bob Diamond Diamond had agreed that all of his unvested deferred bonus awards and long-term incentives would lapse, that he would not receive any future bonus or incentive awards or compensation for the termination of his employment. The banks outgoing chairman, Marcus Agius, in his testimony to the House of Commons Treasury Committee, said Diamond had waived a potential 20m in bonuses and share awards. Agius added that as part of the resignation deal, Diamond will receive 12 months salary and pension contributions worth 2m. Barclays shares were up 2.5 percent at 167.45 pence following the announcement. It is my hope that my decision to step down and todays agreement on my remuneration will help close this chapter and allow Barclays to move forward and prosper, Diamond said, according to the banks announcement. The agreement is something that the board of Barclays welcomes and I am glad that he has done it, Agius told the committee. Reuters

Londons Games Traffic Lanes Causing Motorist Confusion

LONDON motorists were struggling to get to grips with the special Games Lanes reserved for Olympic athletes and dignitaries on their first day of operation July 25.
They were still trying to figure out when and where they could drive on the 30 miles of lanes, designed to whisk 82,000 athletes, officials, VIPs, sponsors and media to venues on time. One driver said he spent much of his journey from east London stuck in a bottleneck while casting an eye at an empty lane which was not being used by any of the Olympic community. Theyve closed off the Games Lane, but nobody was using it, said Ross Keeling, a call-out engineer, whose normal 40-minute journey had become two hours. It was a pain the neck, he added. We just have to sit and watch the empty lane. Dubbed Zil lanes after Soviet roads reserved for black limousines carrying senior Communist party members, the specially designated lanes were introduced after athletes became stranded in traffic jams at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. They are resented by many Londoners who already have to endure narrow, logjammed streets. TRICKY Alex Grebnev, 32, who works in a bank in central London, said he faced the tricky choice of driving in a Games Lane or a bus lane both of which can carry a hefty fine. It was a bit confusing not knowing which one to drive in, he said. Luckily it was 2am at the time. The Games Lanes are part of a larger 109-mile Olympic Route Network which prohibits stopping or loading and some right-hand turns. Some delivery van drivers have planned ahead, and worked out which side roads they can use for parking. Some firms have also stocked up on supplies to avoid potential trouble, while traffic woes had been eased with schools being on holiday. Van driver Perry Fletcher showed the inside of his van which was virtually empty despite it being mid-morning. A few black cabs have swapped the taxi drivers Bible, the ubiquitous London A-Z, for the new Olympic route guide to help. Youve got to keep your eyes open for the road markings, taxi driver Allan Williams, 68, said. PROBLEM The problem is they are all white. Its early days. Ive said I would give

Scottish Government To Back Same-Sex Marriage

SCOTLANDS government has announced plans to legalize same-sex marriages. Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said last month that legislation permitting the marriages would soon be introduced. The measure has backing from the major Scottish political parties. It follows a public consultation on the issue. When enacted, Scotland could become the first part of the UK to allow same-sex marriages. The UK government has conducted a public consultation on legalizing samesex marriages, and it has the backing of Prime Minister David Cameron. But UK officials are waiting for the results of the public consultation before taking further steps. Reuters

Peter Hendy, commissioner at Londons public transport authority Transport for London (TfL), denied motorists would be confused in an interview with Reuters earlier last month. It is quite clear to me already that from the markings we have put down without all the signage that people can very clearly see whats there and I dont think people will be confused, he said. London Olympic organisers (LOCOG) said traffic was moving and athletes had been getting to venues for training. Up until this morning its been good, a spokeswoman told reporters at the daily briefing. The traffic is moving, the lanes are working well. Reuters

G4S Defends Management Fee For Venue Security

SECURITY FIRM G4S last month defended a multimillion pound management fee for protecting Britains Olympic venues after politicians urged it to waive the payment following its failure to provide enough guards. MPs had expressed astonishment that G4S planned to retain the 57m management fee despite a debacle over Olympic security that forced Britain to draft in an extra 3,500 troops to make up the shortfall. The worlds largest security firm said it wished to clarify the nature of the fee, which members of parliaments influential Home Affairs Committee had questioned at a hearing with G4Ss Chief Executive Nick Buckles this week. This constitutes payments in respect of the operating cost elements of the contract relating to the infrastructure needed to support the contract over the last two years, G4S said in a statement. COSTS During that time G4S has incurred significant costs on behalf of its customer, (London 2012 organiser) LOCOG, to provide it with a range of staff, facilities and services including premises, IT and payroll systems, it added. G4S has been at the centre of a political fire storm that has pummelled its share price since it announced only two weeks before the start of the Games that it could not provide a promised 10,400 security guards under a 284m contract. The government said it was putting an extra 1,200 troops on standby as a contingency in case G4S failed to meet its revised total of 7,000 guards. The company has promised to reimburse British authorities for the extra soldiers and police required to cover security gaps at Olympic venues. The firm said it had conducted a review and concluded that even if all of the additional troops on standby were deployed, the overall losses on its contract would remain within its previously stated estimate of between 35m and 50m.

Demands Grow For UK To Consider Cutting EU Ties

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

Am I Too Late? No, Jump Up On The Cart!

ITS LONNIE DONEGAN introducing this months topic*, which features time limits, deadlines, penalties and, generally, the consequences of being too late! But here in the US, it often seems there isnt a too late you may just have to pay a bit extra for the privilege. This seems one way the IRS and US businesses could teach something to HMRC and the British companies that take a more hectoring approach. One of my favorite things about the US (and its OK, I work in tax, Im bound to be pretty weird!) is the idea that the deadline for filing tax returns is the date for getting it in the mail. It seems so reasonable that the individual taxpayer can hardly be held responsible for how long the mail service takes to deliver it, your responsibility ends with getting it in the mailbox. It isnt quite the same now most tax returns are submitted online and the time you pushed the Send or Submit button is recorded to the second! The IRS have recently announced that if you have submitted your 2011 Tax Return without including the new form 8938 giving details of foreign assets and accounts, all is not lost! The recommendation is to file an amended return and attach the 8938 to it! Since 2011 is the first year this form has been required, the IRS will be more understanding about late filing. No additional tax liability will be due because it is an information form only. With all of these information returns, ie ones that dont produce a tax liability at the end, but simply give the IRS, yes, information, the idea is to encourage people into compliance. There are threats as well, of course, since we are talking about a tax authority, but there needs to be an element of cajoling as well. Theres been a lot of publicity about the new form in the tax world, so advisers should be making sure it is filed when necessary, but it can take a long time for the word to get out! And it is one case where following what you did in 2010 wont help you! By the time you read this, it will be too late to file a Foreign Bank Account Report for 2011. These were due at the US Treasury in Detroit by the end of June, and there is no extension available for filing this form. But does this mean that if you know you should have filed it, but didnt, it is now too late to do so? I dont think so. If you havent completed and sent in an FBAR form, but you had UK financial accounts with a value at any time during 2011 of over $10,000 (including life assurance with a cash-in value and retirement accounts with a value), then do it now. As I have mentioned before, when completing the form you use the highest balance on your account during the year, but use the December 31, 2011 exchange rate ($1.5537 = 1). Because of using a balance from one date and, probably, an exchange rate from another, you end up with a figure that bears no relation to anything you actually owned at any time during the year! But that is tax business, rather than show business! Thank you, Lonnie! *From Lonnies hit song My Old Mans A Dustman.

Dont Fail To Plan

YOU KNOW the old saying, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Being thoughtful about a US immigration strategy is no different. Many foreign nationals sell everything abroad, enter the US as a visitor and subsequent to arrival, start thinking about how they will lawfully remain in the US. In my 27 years of practicing immigration law, I am constantly amazed how frequently people endeavor upon perhaps their most significant life change with such little planning. It is critical for a foreign national to physically visit the US, perhaps several times, before deciding to stay forever. Once it is decided that the US is the place (and it is not for everyone), I believe the first meeting should be with an immigration lawyer to see what the realistic options are available. The US immigration system is outdated and counter intuitive. What one assumes to be the case often is not. A common example is that once one enters the US as a visitor pursuant to the on line ESTA program, it is important to understand that the admission period will only be for 90 days and that cannot be extended or changed to another category. The only exception in some cases is the foreign national becomes the spouse of a US citizen. Another common misunderstanding is that merely getting a job offer from a US company that is willing to sponsor you, is sufficient. It is not. Only those with certain levels of formal education and being offered certain types of jobs can be sponsored for a working visa. The H-1B working visa, perhaps the most popular, is numerically limited on an annual basis and availability cycles need to be closely monitored. I often hear from those with a more entrepreneurial spirit, I am self-employed. I wont be taking a job away from any Americans. Surely I can move to the US and do my own thing, right? Wrong! In most cases, one employment authorized visa or another will have to be secured. Depending on the circumstances, there may be a few to choose from and a careful cost/benefit and risk analyses should be performed. Mitch, I hear often, I just got married to my girlfriend. She has a green card. Where can I pick up the paperwork to apply for my green card? It would be good for a foreign national entering this scenario to know that by becoming the spouse of a green card holder one can get in a green card queue that is 2-4 years long. During that time, they get no permission to remain, let alone work, in the US. Once the spouse becomes a US citizen, the situation is much better as there is no waiting list for spouses of US citizens to get a green card. There are however, significant timing issues involved with even that type of application. Many nonimmigrant investors with E-2 visas wake up several years down the road and call to ask how to convert their E visas into a green card. It is often surprising for them to learn that the E-2 visa was not designed to be a stepping stone to green card status. Although there are some Bills pending in Congress aimed at making this transition a bit easier, at this point in time, it is quite challenging (not impossible) to convert an E-2 to a green card. I have seen on more than one occasion foreign nationals investing in a US business, get an E-2 nonimmigrant investor visa only for the business to fail resulting in the visas to potentially become void causing the family to be uprooted once again to return home. The lesson here is that the planning not only should address a feasible immigration/ visa path, but also sufficient business due diligence if the bases of the visa is owning a business. The business climate in the US is quite different to the business climate in most other countries. Being a success abroad has little correlation with being a business success in the US. Moreover, the business climate varies significantly from state to state and even from local region to local region. Sufficient due diligence cannot be over stated. Another common dilemma I find some new arrivals in involves those who entered the US with an intracompany transferee L-1 visa. When the US entity is newly formed, the L-1 visa (and the L-2 for spouse and children) is only issued for an initial one year period. If the business does not meet specified criteria, the visas will NOT be extended. This can be devastating when homes and cars are purchased, children get integrated into school and community, etc. Often times I surprise L-1 visa holders about the likelihood of post first year extensions. Of course, this is something good to know up front in order to go into this adventure with eyes wide open. In sum, sufficient investigation and due diligence is critical when considering all significant moves, certainly for a move that brings family from one continent to another.

UK Unemployment Falls To 8.1 Percent

UNEMPLOYMENT in the United Kingdom fell to 8.1 percent in the March-May quarter, down from 8.3 percent in the previous three months, official data showed last month. The Office for National Statistics said the rate was also an improvement on the 8.2 percent jobless rate reported last month for the February-April period. The number of people with jobs increased by 181,000, the biggest quarterly gain in two years. Howard Archer, chief European economist at IHS Global Insight, said the job market may be enjoying a short-term boost related to the 2012 Olympic Games. Further out, the jobs outlook seems more problematical, he said. Total pay including bonuses was 1.5 percent higher than a year earlier, compared with an annual gain of 1.4 percent in the previous quarter.

WILL BRITAINS EU membership be one more casualty of the continents devastating debt crisis? Senior British lawmakers warned last month that Britain must consider a future outside the European Union as the 17 members of Europes currency union, which the UK has stayed out of, develop closer fiscal and political ties. Plans to exit the EU a policy once advocated primarily on Britains political fringe are rapidly gathering mainstream appeal and could dominate debate at the scheduled 2015 national election. I do not believe that Britains national interest is served by its current relationship with the EU, Britains former Defense Secretary Liam Fox said in a speech offering support to growing calls for a national vote on the issue. SKEPTICAL Opinion polls show most Britons are deeply skeptical about closer European ties and eager to win back national decision making powers lost to Brussels. Britain last held a vote on its membership of the EU, then the European Economic Community, in 1975. Fox said that European nations which dont use the euro currency should press for much looser ties to their neighbors, or contemplate quitting the bloc altogether. However, Prime Minister Cameron said euroskeptics were wrong that the only option for Britain to defend its interests was to quit the EU altogether. CHANGES Cameron pointed to his decision in December to veto changes to the European Union treaty, when he was the only leader among the bloc to refuse to endorse a plan for nations to submit their budgets for central review and limit the deficits they can run. Ex-government minister John Redwood, like Fox also a member of Camerons euroskeptic Conservative Party, said many British people would welcome a chance to vote to leave the European Union. Britains main opposition Labour Party has suggested it could include plans for a national referendum in its manifesto for the 2015 election. However, the Liberal Democrats junior members of the coalition government with Camerons Conservatives are staunch defenders of European ties.

THIS MONTH reality mixes with fantasy, both for the (allegedly) fictional characters of Walford, as well as one very big (allegedly) real event Jean finally realizes that something is up and keeps asking Michael for her money back, as if he would actually give it to her. What complicates things is, it wasnt all her money. When Michael told her that these investments would pay off handsomely, she thought she could solve all of Alfies financial problems, and used the VAT money from the Queen Vic to invest. Now its due and she cant get it back. Michael strings her along for a while but then when Jean gets too insistent and he thinks hes about to be exposed to Janine, he gaslights her (not hard to do with her history) and tries to make everyone think she made it all up and is harassing him. Everyone now believes that Jean stole Alfies money. But now Kat is back, and shes on the warpath and determined to help Jean. And Michael has problems elsewhere as well namely, finance Janine. Royal Memories: Prince Charles Tribute To The Queen

PBS ANNOUNCED last month that Royal Memories: Prince Charles Tribute To The Queen, which premiered to 10 million viewers in the UK as part of Queen Elizabeths Diamond Jubilee weekend, will air Sunday, September 2, at 8pm ET on PBS. In this touching, personal film, Charles, Prince of Wales reflects on Her Majestys 60-year reign both as the nations queen and as his mother. Providing a rare glimpse of the everyday private life of the royal family, Prince Charles narrates the documentary, adding his own insight and commentary to archival newsreels, never-before-seen home movies and previously unseen photographs from Her Majestys private collection. Included in the program is footage of a young Prince Charles and his sister Princess Anne on a family holiday filmed by Queen Elizabeth herself. Royal Memories: Prince Charles Tribute To The Queen is a captivating documentary that gives viewers the extraordinary opportunity to see the royal family through the eyes of an insider, said John Wilson, senior vice president and chief TV programming executive for PBS. The unique commentary offered by the Prince of Wales makes this film about Queen Elizabeth unlike any other. Royal Memories includes exclusive camera footage taken behind the scenes on Coronation day at Buckingham Palace, and clips of the family on board the Britannia, at the royal residence of Windsor Castle in Berkshire and on holiday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. The result is a documentary that depicts Queen Elizabeth in her dual role as the Queen of England and as a loving mother, providing an unprecedented glimpse of the private life of the royal family throughout the monarchs six-decade reign.

Branson To Take His Children On First Space Flight

THE FIRST space flight of Richard Bransons Virgin Galactic venture will be a family affair: The billionaire adventurer confirmed last month he will be joined by his two adult children. The British tycoon behind the Virgin business empire that spans cable television, airlines and space tourism revealed that the three will make the journey 62-miles above the Earth aboard the SpaceshipTwo (SS2) next year. Some 120 other tourists who have signed up for the $200,000 two-hour trips into space over the coming years were also present at the Farnborough Airshow south of London. Virgin says it has 529 paid up passengers already one more than the total of space travelers since the former Soviet Unions Yuri Gagarin became the first man to go into space in 1961.

Dozens Stranded Over Thames As Cable Car Breaks Down

DOZENS of travellers were left stranded high above the River Thames after Londons newly unveiled cable car broke down in sweltering heat July 25. The 45m system that links two Olympic venues ground to a halt for over 30 minutes. Danny Price, head of operator Emirates Air Line, said: The Emirates Air Line is now back up and running after experiencing a technical fault. All passengers were safely back in the terminal and water and first aid were made available to them. We would like to apologise to anyone affected.
Awarded 4 stars by restaurant critics

The cable car, which connects the O2 Arena in Greenwich with the ExCel exhibition centre at the Royal Docks in east London, was launched to great fanfare by London mayor Boris Johnson last month. Some passengers took to social media site Twitter to vent their frustration. One, Alastair Owens, posted a photo of the stationary cable cars and tweeted: London Emirates cable car has broken down and were dangling mid air over the docks -- seem to be evacuating... Can see cable cars closest to ground have been evacuated, but we in mid air are being told nothing. Reuters

Ticket Backlash Overshadows Games
OLYMPIC organisers scrambled to quell a backlash over depressing TV images of half-empty stands at the London Olympics as a government minister said an urgent inquiry had been launched to Sebastian Coe identify just who had failed to show up and why. Sports fans from all over Britain who had been charmed by the Olympic publicity offensive but let down by a complex ballot system for the 8.8 million tickets, have been outraged by footage of empty seats at key venues including Wimbledon, one of the hottest tickets in world tennis. Chairman Sebastian Coe, who threatened to name and shame sponsors that did not fill their seats, said missing spectators were mostly officials from international sports federations, other Olympic officials, their families and friends. It doesnt obviously appear to be a sponsorship issue at the moment, Coe said, after Culture Minister Jeremy Hunt said he thought the vacant seats had belonged to sponsors. Coe, a former Olympic gold medallist on the track, said that only eight percent of allocated tickets went to big corporate sponsors such as Visa and Coca-Cola and that 75 percent of tickets were in the hands of the public. Sponsors P&G, Visa, McDonalds and Coca-Cola have all issued statements reassuring officials, fans and athletes that their allocated tickets have been and will be used by winners of promotional contests, partners, customers and employees. Organisers said they were already in touch with the International Olympic Committee to discover who failed to show up and why. British Olympic Association Chairman Colin Moynihan told a briefing on July 29 one solution might be a 30-minute rule whereby fans would be allowed to take up vacant seats if spectators were late or did not arrive.

London Police Warn Tourists Over Fake Officers

POLICE last month warned tourists in London to beware of people pretending to be plain-clothes officers and stealing credit cards and cash during the Olympics, and said they arrested more touts for illegally reselling Games tickets. The capitals Metropolitan Police Service said it arrested three men aged between 27 and 35 years on July 28 on charges of impersonating a police officer and conspiracy to steal. There have been a number of incidents where criminals have impersonated police officers to take money off unsuspecting tourists, said Detective Superintendent Steve Osborn. Officers would never take money from you, they would never take you to a cashpoint and ask you for money. They are unlikely to ask to see your bank cards and would never need to ask you for your pin number, he added. These arrests were made in central Londons Russell Square, where London 2012 organisers are running a transport service for media covering the Games. Reuters

Memorable Quotes So Far From The London Olympics:

Inspire a generation is our motto. Not necessarily Create a generation, which is what they sometimes get up to in the Olympic village.
London Mayor Boris Johnson extols the energy and enthusiasm of the Games 10,000 athletes, to whom some 150,000 condoms have been distributed.

Threatened Strikes During Olympics

STRIKES by train drivers and passport officials threaten major disruptions to the London Olympics, prompting the government to warn unions that they risked public anger if the industrial action went ahead. The Aslef rail union announced last month that 450 of its members in central England would walk out between August 6 and 8 in a dispute over pensions, affecting passengers travelling from cities such as Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby to the capital. On the issue of the danger of strike action causing disruptions, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said: It would be completely out of tune with the mood of the British public. This is a moment when Britain wants to show its best face to the world, and that is what the vast majority of the public wants as well. I would strongly counsel any unions thinking of disrupting this very important period, I think they would lose huge amounts of public support if they really tried to do this. A planned strike by British Home Office staff including immigrtion officers was called off July 25 due to progress in peace talks.

British History, Culture And Humour In

Spectacular Olympic Opening Ceremony

Continued from page 1 PARADE The parade of nations featured most of the roughly 10,500 athletes some planned to stay away to save their strength for competition marching behind the flags of the 204 nations taking part. Greece had the lead, as the spiritual home of the games, and Team Great Britain was last, as the host. The tradition of athletes marching into the stadium by nation at the opening ceremony began at Londons first Olympics, in 1908. It fell to the queen to declare the games open. The Olympic cauldron was lit with a flame that was kindled May 10, at the birthplace of the anciest Olympics in Greece, from a reflection of the suns rays off a mirror. Since then, 8,000 torchbearers, mostly unheralded Britons, have carried the flame on a 70-day, 8,000-mile journey from toe to tip of the British Isles, whipping up enthusiasm for a $14bn Olympics taking place during a severe recession. TORCHBEARER The identity of the last torchbearer, the one to light the cauldron, was kept secret but was revealed when rowing legend Steve Regrave entered the stadium and handed the Olympic Flame over to seven young athletes who present Britains hopes for the next Olympics. Speculation focused on Roger Bannister, the first man to run a four-minute mile, in 1954, and on. The shows lighter moments included puppets drawn from British childrens literature Captain Hook from Peter Pan, Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmations and Lord Voldemort from JK Rowlings Harry Potter series, as well as Mary Poppins. Not to mention the Queen parachuting into the stadium, we were lead to believe, after being picked up by James Bond at the Palace. Their appearance had a serious message, too the importance of literacy. If you can read and write, youre free, or you can fight for your freedom, Boyle said. The director of Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting also laced the show with snippets from British cinema, including the actor Daniel Craig as James Bond, and the spine-tingling soundtrack to Chariots of Fire, which told the story of a Scotsman and an Englishman at the 1924 Paris Games. GLOBAL Boyles $42m show, with 15,000 volunteers, drew a global television audience of one billion on a rich and textured journey through British history. Boyle drew from Shakespeare, British pop culture, literature and music, and other sources of inspiration that will speak to but perhaps at times baffle not just Anglophiles but people across the globe. It was Rogges last time as president of the International Olympic Committee to watch the Olympic flag being raised at an opening ceremony. He will step down in 2013 after completing the maximum two terms. Political leaders from around the world, US first lady Michelle Obama and her daughters, and a sprinkling of European and celebrity royalty were also in attendance.

A JUDGE has rejected a bid by residents of a London high- rise to stop having their building used as a missile base during the Olympic Games. Judge Charles Haddon-Cave said last month that Britains Ministry of Defense acted legally when it decided to put the weapons atop the Fred Wigg Tower. Residents of the 17-storey tower, about two miles from the Olympic Park in east London, say the missile battery could make their homes a terrorist target. But the judge said the missiles presented no real threat. The building is one of six sites where the British military plans to place missiles as part of security for the games.

London Wins Early Gold In Quiet Olympic Commute

BRITAINS much maligned public transport system coped with an unusually quiet early rush hour on the first full working day of the Olympics July 30, winning an early gold for carrying one million spectators smoothly through Europes busiest commute and, on a Monday. Travellers said buses and trains were working surprisingly smoothly with a few hiccups, confounding dire forecasts of a transport meltdown in a city once notorious for slow trains, late buses and incoherent delay announcements. Londons transport bosses expect an extra three million journeys per day during the Games on top of the usual 12 million, an Olympian test for an underground train network that first opened in 1863 during the reign of Queen Victoria. The capitals higgledy-piggledy public transport system has been a target of scorn among Londoners and employers who complain that the jumble of grimy buses and delayed trains damages Londons reputation as one of the worlds premier cities. But in interviews with Reuters correspondents across London, commuters said the early morning rush hour had gone unusually well: empty trains and serene bus journeys replaced the usually cramped and sweaty crush that is the daily fare of London life. The trains were all excellent today, we had no troubles, Hugo Brown from Ely in Cambridge, who travelled to the Olympics to support Britains Paul Drinkhall in the table tennis competition, said. Some Londoners, indeed, appeared to have opted to cycle to the office: In otherwise quiet streets, swarms of cyclists in luminous yellow jackets formed at every traffic light while bike sheds in the City of London were fuller than usual. Its probably better than I expected. We had given ourselves extra time to get here and weve actually gotten here in less time than expected, he added. Reuters

Olympics Soundtrack Races Into British Charts

LONDONS 2012 Olympics opening ceremony raced into the British charts the day after the Olympics opened with a collection of music from the kaleidoscopic extravaganza becoming the weeks fifthbest selling compilation album after just 24 hours on sale. Danny Boyles 27m Isles of Wonder spectacle, watched around the globe, was performed to a roller coaster of British music that ran from Mike Oldfields blockbuster Tubular Bells to Dizzee Rascals 2009 hit Bonkers. Elgars Nimrod Enigma Variation shared the Olympic Stadiums stage with Sheffield rockers Arctic Monkeys and British electronic duo Underworld, who were music directors of the event. All feature on the anthology, which had sold 10,000 copies by the sales cut-off time July 28, enough to make it fifth in the compilation album charts, which are separate from the main album rankings, the Official Charts Company said. The weeks best-selling album, Ill Manors from London singer Plan B, brought another Olympic connection to the charts as it topped the rankings on its debut. The album is the soundtrack for a low budget crime film of the same title written and directed by Plan B under the name Ben Drew set in the run-down London area of Newham which includes the Olympic Stadium in its boundary. JOE COCKER OBE has been keeping us Up Where We Belong for at least the last 50 years! With a Little Help from My Friends is what Joe will be getting when he opens at The Greek Theatre in LA August 15; Harveys Stateline Casino, Nevada August 17; Sleep Train Pavilion in Concord, CA August 18; and the Santa Barbara Bowl August 19 where Karen and I will attend. Born John Robert Cocker May 20, 1944 in Crookes, Sheffield in Yorkshire, he became a British Rock and Blues singer in the 60s with a gritty voice and idiosyncratic arm movements, while performing. He got his start playing Skiffle in the pubs of Sheffield, a place like a lot of us feel most at home. Performing cover songs of Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, and Lonnie Donegan, one of his first big gigs was support group for the Rolling Stones at Sheffield City Hall in 1964. Producer Denny Cordell of Procol Harem, Moody Blues, and Georgie Fame saw Joe and the Grease Band and persuaded them to go to London and appear at the famed Marquee Club. This was when Cocker entered the big time with a groundbreaking rearrangement of With a Little Help from My Friends which made the Top Ten British charts for 13 weeks, eventually reaching number one (Jimmy Page played lead guitar). After touring in 1968 with The Who and in the Fall with Gene Pitney and Marmalade in early 1969, Joe and Grease embarked on their first US tour that same Spring with their album going Gold. They played at several festivals: Newport Rock, the Denver Pop, and finally, flying by helicopter into the ultimate

Joe Cocker. Photo: Nederlander.com festival of the last Century, Woodstock. I had just arrived in America at the height of the Vietnam war and the youth were rebelling. Everyone stopped everything they were doing and converged on Woodstock, in our case, only to be turned away by the police. So we just held our own party! It was shortly after that that Joe recorded She Came in Through the Bathroom Window and Something. Then dissolved the Grease Band as he was unwilling to do another US tour. In 1970, despite Joes reluctance to be on the road, an American tour had already been booked so he hastily formed a new band christened Mad Dogs and Englishmen with a group of some 30 musicians that included pianist and bandleader Leon Russell, three drummers, and backup singers Rita Coolidge and Claudia Lennear, touring 48 cities, enjoying several chart hits with Cry Me a River and Feeling Alright by Dave Mason. I was to meet Joe Cocker several times a few years later in the Valley (LA) and through a mutual friend, the late British comedian Jonathan Moore, and before Joes enormously popular Up Where We Belong with Jennifer Warnes in 82, I was putting a couple of Pub shows together and asked if Joe would like to come down and give a little

support. Not only did he show up, he liked the band so much he got up and sang half the night, much to the pleasure and amazement of both band and audience alike, as Joe and pub music just go together. For me, Joe is one of the nicest, most genuine Brits Ive ever had the pleasure of spending time with. The rest is history. On June 3, 2002 Joe performed With a Little Help from My Friends accompanied by Phil Collins on drums and Queen guitarist Brian May at a concert on the grounds of Buckingham Palace to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty awarded him the OBE on her honors list for service to music. To celebrate his award he played two concerts in London and Sheffield. So with luck well meet him again at the Santa Barbara Bowl August 19. economy and establish their individualities in the three years that remain before they must go to the country. REFUSED The trouble is that the economy refuses to behave and respond as they want. If anything, things are getting worse despite all the pain that is being inflicted on a patient electorate. The Coalition endlessly blames Gordon Brown and Tony Blair for the countrys economic travails which it hopes will screen their own political infighting. The latest scandal concerns Barclays Bank rigging interest rates the LIBOR to increase their profits during the financial crisis which started in 2008. Cameron and Labour leader, Ed Miliband, clashed over what sort of inquiry they wanted. Cameron using his built-in majority secured a parliamentary inquiry. George Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, is confident that what will emerge is evidence of the last governments collusion with the banks in some sort of illegal activity. Noisy scenes in the Commons culminated in Osborne accusing Ed Balls, the Shadow Chancellor, of leaning on the banks using the Bank of England. DENIED However, it looks as though there is no evidence that Osbornes charge has any truth in it: appearing before a Commons committee, Paul Tucker, the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England denied this happened. It has probably cost him his chances of ever being Governor of the Bank of England! Balls called for an apology. Osborne refused, convinced that something will emerge. This is the sort of fractiousness that has crept into the House of Commons. Happily, they have all gone off now for the summer holidays so there is at least a temporary lull in hostilities. Do not expect the truce to hold. Everybody is at everybody elses throats. john.polley1@ntlworld.com

Two films being released this month with top British actresses: Kate Beckinsale in Total Recall and Rachael Weiss in Bourne Legacy. The show we cant wait to see is singer, songwriter, and voice behind SuperTramp, Roger Hodgson appearing at The Taste of Newport in Newport Beach, CA September 16. The last show we saw, Roger took to the stage, then exclaimed, Youre all mine! How right he was! The audience went wild with love and emotion giving him standing ovations after every song. It reminded us of what a prolific song writer and composer he really is! Which says it all for our generation. If you only get to enjoy one concert in your life time, this has to be the one! Coalition Coming Apart At The Seams

DAVID CAMERON and Nick Clegg took a bold step when they formed the Coalition Government in 2010. It was a union born as much out of hatred of the Labour Party as of love for each other, the latter being the predominant emotion for the first two years of the deal. In October 2002, the current Home Secretary Theresa May stunned the Conservative Party Conference when she told delegates that the Tories were considered the Nasty Party and the story of Camerons rise to power reflects how he vigorously struggled to shake off this image. When he entered office eight years later, he actively set about vilifying the Labour Party, effectively turning them into the Nasty Party, particularly where economic management was concerned. The Liberal Democrats had had barely a whiff of power since the 1930s but were faced with what for most of them was impossible keeping a Tory government in power while not compromising their liberal principles. ADOPTING Clegg squared that circle by enthusiastically adopting the Tory approach to the now-Opposition Labour Party and vilifying its economic management. This enabled the Lib Dems to support Cameron and jettison most of what had appeared in their election manifesto, notably the promise to abolish student tuition fees. The accession to power also enabled them to live with Tories anti-EU and anti-immigration stances. Thus it is love love of power that has kept the Coalition together so far. But this took a battering a year ago when the Libs most cherished political target proportional representation (aka a permanent role in government for Lib Dems) went down in the referendum attacked by their Coalition partners. By way of compensation, Cameron offered the chance to Clegg of ensuring his place in history by heading up reform of the House of Lords. ADVOCATED Since all three political parties had advocated this reform in their manifestos it would be a straightforward matter, ideally suited for Clegg since he has a great deal of time on his hands. The only problem was actually finding time for parliament to discuss proposed changes.

In practice, this has rarely been an issue. Back in 1946 parliament introduced a system of guillotining which restricted the time spent in discussion of contentious bills. For the first fifty years only 67 bills were guillotined but in the first six years alone of Tony Blairs reign it happened to 94 bills. On July 10, 2012, Nick Clegg thus wanted to win two votes. The first was acceptance of the principle of House of Lords reform. This sailed through with Labour support though nearly 100 Tories voted against, Camerons worst backbench rebellion since he came to power. The second motion seeking the guillotine was the key one since opponents could kill the bill merely by filibuster (and at the same time wreck all other parliamentary business). RESEARCHED After careful research by the Tory and Lib Dem whips, Cameron ducked out. The whips discovered Tory resistance was so extensive and resolute that defeat was inevitable so he simply didnt bother to seek the second vote. The Lib Dems were hopping mad. In the past couple of years their support for the Tories has seen them almost wiped out as a political party in the country with their leader, Nick Clegg, singled out for the most vicious of attacks. Above all there is the single issue of student tuition fees which the Lib Dems promised to scrap but which they helped the Coalition to increase three-fold. This has not been forgotten or forgiven. In most peoples eyes, they have achieved nothing other than keeping an unpopular government in power. BLAME Now the Tories attitude towards them is changing and becoming publicly obvious.

They blame Lib Dems for not supporting Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Secretary, over the sale of BSkyB to the Murdochs. They are now infuriated by the threat that if the Tories didnt push wholeheartedly for Lords reform, the Lib Dems would block David Camerons constituency boundary re-organisation which reduces the number of MPs from 650 to 600. It is calculated that his measure will hand the Tories an extra 20 seats. At a rough guess about a third of Conservative MPs would happily ditch the Coalition and most Lib Dems would agree with them. However, the parties are joined at the hip with each of them fearing a wipe-out if they cant somehow wrest back control of the

Floods, Disruption As Heavy Rain Pounds UK

RAIN GRADUALLY eased across parts of Britain last month after weeks worth fell within hours, flooding homes, washing out roads and disrupting train travel. In northeast England, a man in his 20s died when his car ran off the road in heavy rain overnight. The Environment Agency issued more than 200 flood warnings and alerts. Southwest England, where up to three inches of rain fell overnight, was worst affected, with two severe alerts meaning lives could be in danger in place for stretches of the River Axe and River Bride. Hundreds of residents in the county of Devon were put on alert for possible evacuation as the River Yealm burst its banks. Organizers of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, 50 miles northwest of London, told thousands of fans planning to park at the venue to stay away from the July 7 qualifying sessions after rain made some of the parking lots unusable.

Coulson, Brooks Face Charges For Hacking

By Michael Holden and Kate Holton PRIME MINISTER David Camerons former spin doctor and a friend who was a top executive in Rupert Murdochs media empire are to be charged with phone hacking, a dramatic twist that may expose the UK leader to more awkward questions about his judgment. In a decision that opens the door to a politically-charged court case, prosecutors said they would bring phone hacking charges against Andy Coulson, Camerons former communications director, as well as against Rebekah Brooks, who oversaw Murdochs News International and who remains a close friend of the prime minister. There is sufficient evidence for there to be a realistic prospect of conviction in relation to one or more offences, said Alison Levitt, Principal Legal Adviser to the Director of Public Prosecutions. I have concluded that a prosecution is required in the public interest. The alleged offences were committed between 2000 and 2006 when both Coulson and Brooks served as editor of the News of the World, the salacious Sunday tabloid which Murdoch was forced to close a year ago amid public disgust at the phone hacking revelations. If found guilty, the maximum penalty is two years in prison and/or a fine. Among the alleged victims were two former home secretaries (interior ministers), former England football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, former Beatle Paul McCartney and a minor member of the royal family. Analysts and opposition MPs said Camerons political reputation would be in the dock too at a time when his coalition government is struggling to kick-start an economic recovery and retain public trust. Six other people, including some of the most senior former staff at the News of the World, Britains biggest-selling Sunday tabloid until it was closed, will also be charged. The eight defendants will appear at a magistrates court for a preliminary hearing on August 16. Brooks and Coulson are also both accused of involvement in hacking the telephone of Milly Dowler, a missing schoolgirl who was later found murdered in 2002. It was the revelation that News of the World journalists had hacked her phone, giving her parents false hope that she was alive, which triggered a furore that engulfed Murdochs News International and led to the closure of the 168-year-old paper. DENIALS Both Brooks and Coulson said they would fight the allegations, and specifically denied any wrongdoing over Dowler. Brooks, her husband and her personal staff have already been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, while Coulson has been charged with perjury after he denied in an unrelated Scottish court case any knowledge of phone hacking. Coulson resigned from the News of the World following the 2007 convictions, and took up the role as director of communications of Camerons Conservative Party, helping to shape his campaign to become prime minister. Critics say Cameron appointed Coulson in order to secure the backing of the journalists former boss, Murdoch, and say the appointment showed a shocking lack of judgment. Brooks, instantly recognisable by her long, curly red hair, was close to Cameron, socialising with him over Christmas breaks, and both were embarrassed when an inquiry into media ethics read out text messages sent between the two. Cameron used to sign his frequent text messages to Brooks with an affectionate LOL, which he thought stood for lots of love. She quit her News International job at the height of the furore last July when the Dowler hacking was revealed. Reuters

Wiggins And Co Putting Britons On Their Bikes

THE SUCCESS of riders like Bradley Wiggins and Chris Hoy in the Tour de France has encouraged growing numbers of Britons to get on their bicycles to commute to work or to fight off middle-aged flab. British Cycling, the sports governing body, reports a surge in its membership after years of stagnation and says the industry is worth almost 3bn to the UK economy. We are seeing a step change in the numbers of people riding bikes. The success internationally has definitely been one of the reasons for that, said British Cycling CEO Ian Drake. NORM Its almost becoming the norm now. Most people will know somebody who is riding a bike on a regular basis, he added, saying that growing awareness helped to make cycling safer. Figures from Sport England place cycling fourth in terms of the number of participants, in a list headed by swimming, football and athletics. In a sign of the sports growing appeal, commercial TV broadcaster ITV screened the final two stages of the Tour last month live on its flagship ITV1 channel, switching from its less popular niche channel, ITV4.

Ireland Eyes Displaced Londoners For Tourism Lift

AS OLYMPIC athletes arrive, the Irish tourist board is hoping to lure weary Londoners away from a fortnight of potential transport gridlock at the Games. Its new video advert, featuring Irish TV and film actor Chris ODowd, shows one Londoner reaching his city workplace in the same time that it takes another to travel to idyllic rural Ireland. Irelands proximity to Britain has made it a possible beneficiary of the London Olympics as it tries to boost tourism numbers which have stagnated so far this year. However, a crippling economic downturn and its ailing sports facilities meant Ireland missed a trick in attracting highprofile training camps before the July 27-August 12 Games. The debt-laden country has been forced to think creatively over how it can piggyback on the Olympics within the confines of its budget. Alongside its half-a million euro advertising campaign targeting jaded Londoners, Tourism Ireland is focused on attracting anyone in Britain who wants to get away from Olympic fever. If they want to escape somewhere... well gladly take them over here, thats the angle, said Mark Henry, director of marketing at Tourism Ireland. The Olympics campaign is part of a wider drive by Ireland to revive interest from a UK tourism market which has waned in recent years as recession-hit Britons opt to stay at home. The British travelling public continues to shrink so its difficult to grow the business environment. The general economics is depressing peoples intent to travel and the willingness to spend money and that is our barrier to growing the business this year, said Henry.

Blair Makes UK Political Return As Olympic Adviser

THE OPPOSITION Labour Party says former Prime Minister Tony Blair is returning to domestic politics for the first time since quitting power in 2007. Hell be an adviser on Londons Olympics. Blair, who was prime minister for a decade from 1997, hasnt held any political post in the UK since he stepped down. Labour Party leader Ed Miliband told reporters last month it was right to use his undoubted skill and experience. Blair will advise the Labour Party on legacy projects tied to the Summer Games. Blair helped to bring the Summer Games to London with a frantic round of diplomacy in 2005. However, Miliband stressed that Blairs role would be limited, saying a new generation of lawmakers was now setting the partys policies and direction.

A BRITISH man has been extradited to Arizona from Scotland to face trial for illegally exporting and distributing chemicals used to make methamphetamine in the state, authorities said last month. Brian Howes, 48, was ordered to remain in custody on suspicion of 82 drug-related crimes pending a September 5 trial under an order issued in federal court. Howes, who faces charges that include unlawful distribution of listed chemicals and conspiracy, arrived in Arizona last month. Howes of West Lothian, Scotland, was indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2007 in Arizona and accused of using his company website to illegally sell and distribute two regulated chemicals important in the production of the popular drug. Authorities say Howes was the founder and owner of an Internet business that provided 6,900 grams of red phosphorus and 4,850 grams of iodine to customers throughout the state from 2004 to 2006.

Government Signals Clampdown On Tax Avoiders

BRITAIN said last month it would toughen up oversight of tax avoidance schemes which could see the government name and shame those who try to aggressively reduce their tax bills. Under pressure to offset the impact of an austerity programme that has been a factor in the countrys recession, the government is proposing new powers for the taxman. They include greater access to information from tax avoidance schemes to identify their customers and warn those wealthy individuals over their actions. Another proposal would see tax avoidance providers that have broken the rules being forced to reveal details of their schemes. The move follows criticism last month of British comedian Jimmy Carr by Prime Minister David Cameron, who said Carrs use of an offshore tax scheme was morally wrong. Research from the Tax Justice Network has estimated that, worldwide, rich individuals have exploited loopholes in different nations tax regimes to shelter as much as $20 trillion (12.87 trillion) in wealth from tax authorities. We are building on the work we have already done to make life difficult for those who artificially and aggressively reduce their tax bills, Treasury minister David Gauke will say in a speech, according to extracts reJimmy Carr leased in advance. These schemes damage our ability to fund public services and provide support to those who need it. Britain has slumped back into recession this year, raising concerns the ConservativeLiberal Democrat coalition government will struggle to meet its budget deficit reduction targets. That has made areas such as clamping down on tax avoidance and finding efficiency savings across government departments a crucial, if somewhat unpredictable, part of balancing the books. The government has come under fire for targeting individuals while overseeing a system that has been soft on big companies tax bills. A consultation on the Treasurys proposed tax avoidance clampdown runs until October 15. Reuters

Diamonds Are Forever At This Years Edinburgh Military Tattoo

FROM AN ancient Pictish warrior picking up a pebble on the Edinburgh castle esplanade to a celebration of Queen Elizabeths coronation 60 years ago, the magic of diamonds is a theme running through this years Edinburgh festival Royal Military Tattoo. The tattoos chief executive and producer, Brigadier David Allfrey, expects the Tattoo will again be a sell-out with almost 90 percent of the 220,000 tickets already taken up for the show, staged at the castle built on a volcanic core towering over central Edinburgh from August 3 to 25. The tattoo was first held in 1950, to an audience of 8,000. The theme this year is to make a diamond and that really allows us to pick up on the diamond jubilee and allows us to talk about Queen Elizabeths reign in the round, he told Reuters. It also celebrates the huge changes that have taken place over the past 60 years, which Allfrey compared to the eras of previous queens, Victoria and Elizabeth I. Asked about security, with the Edinburgh festivals running in parallel with the Olympic Games in London, police Chief Inspector Gavin Phillip told Reuters: Jaguar Mk2

Theres always a risk, but there is nothing specific this year. We monitor it on a daily basis, possibly more so on this year of the Olympics. The climax to the 90-minute show will be an orchestral re-enactment of the queens coronation in 1953, the year after she succeeded her father George VI to the throne. A towering cathedral forms the backdrop and projected images, church bells and voice-overs vividly recall that momentous event, Allfrey said, with a grand musical finale and the James Bond tune Diamonds Are Forever as fireworks light up the night sky. Reuters version, the Mark 2. It was based on the Mark 1, but the result was different in many ways, both aesthetically and mechanically. Improvements to the design and modern materials resulted in a reduced overall weight. The interior was completely redesigned but retained its luxury and elegance with such amenities as leather and wood veneer. The attention to detail both inside and out, only amplified the ambiance of sophistication. Under the hood again was the XK engine which had continued to prove itself as a reliable and capable power plant, the same that had won at LeMans in 1951 and 1953. The XK engine was now enlarged to 3.8 litres producing around 220 horsepower. It was the improved styling of the Mark 2 that made the most impact over its predecessor, the differences were subtle and were actually quite hard to spot, the main one being an increase in glass area which made the car seem more spacious inside, and a new dashboard was added. It was these subtle differences however that changed a great looking motor car into a masterpiece, a work of art. No saloon car either before or after the reign of the Jaguar Mark 2 has come close to matching its elegance. Although it is difficult to improve on perfection one company did. It was Coombs who first modified the Mark 2 for competition, these mods were mainly mechanical to prepare the cars for racing, but one modification was to reduce the width of the rear wheel spats to allow for increased brake cooling but the cars looked so much better because of this and many Mark 2 owners had the Coombs modifications done for road use. With the success of this classic the now financially sound Jaguar company embarked on the E-Type which debuted in 1961, it is due to the Jaguar Mark 2 that this famous sports car came about. It was Sir William Lyons maxim of space grace and pace the Jaguar Mark 2 had it all. Happy Motoring.

THROUGHOUT the years the most revered motor cars have been sports cars. It seems like definitive automotive styling has lent itself to the sleek curvaceous flowing lines that are perceived by us as speed. Lets face it if a car looks fast it also looks good, it is the reason that the most magnificently styled motor cars over the years have been sports machines and racing cars. There is a different mind-set in the designers eyes when developing a saloon car, with space and comfort being the priority. But, there has been one saloon car at least that looked fast and yet met all the requirements of being an extremely comfortable four door luxury family car. It is probably the most beautiful saloon car ever produced and it paved the way for one of the very finest sports cars in history as well as propelling the parent company into prominence throughout the world. The company was Jaguar, and this magnificently styled and engineered motor saloon was the Mark 2. Even today the Jaguar Mk2 looks well and still looks fast. Even by todays standards this car is a performer in the 1960s she was unparalleled. The Mk2 was powered by the very best engine of its day, a proven Le Mans winner, and a power plant which served every Jaguar motor car from 1948 until the 1970s XJ6. This engine was the iconic straight 6-cylinder twin overhead cam XK. The seeds for the new engine were sown around 1943 when, with an eventual allied victory apparently assured when William Lyons used the time spent fire-watching at his Coventry factory to spell out to his tiny engineering team his post-war ambitions for car production. In the 1940s designing an all twin overhead cam engine was radical stuff. Previously nearly all twin ohc engines had been seen only in expensive, low-volume or pure racing cars. Yet here was Lyons keen to use this

exotic format in a big, soft, refined touring car which would be produced in relatively large numbers, and be driven everyday by mechanically inexpert owners who would expect to have their cars serviced by the local town garage. The car for which this new engine was destined for was the Mark VII touring saloon. From the drawing board came a succession of experimental engines, each tested and evaluated in a disciplined and highly-systematic manner. It was finally perfected after the stroke was increased and the 3.4 litre XK engine was born. Lyons didnt initially fit the new engine in the Mark VII as he wanted to try the engine out in a test car and from this test car the XK120 sports car was born. 200 of these cars was the figure planned for use in testing and racing, but such was the demand for this new sports car Jaguar decided on serious production. The XK120 name was derived from the XK engine, and the fact that it could reach 120mph in 1948, the time of its introduction made it the fastest standard production car in the world. Eventually the 3.4 litre XK engine was introduced into the Mark VII in 1950. The success of the XK-engined Mark VII and the sporty XK120 prompted Lyons to try the midrange car market which brought about the Jaguar Mark 1 which was basically a smaller version of the Mark VII. It also had a smaller version of the 3.8 litre XK engine as it was bored out and stroked to 2.4 litres. Although having a family resemblance to the larger Mark VII, the Mark I differed in many ways. Most importantly, it was the first Jaguar with

unitary construction of body and chassis. The cars independent front suspension featured double wishbones, coil springs, and an anti-roll bar. The front suspension sub frame was mounted on the body by rubber mounts. The live rear axle was positively located by quarter elliptic leaf springs, trailing arms and a Panhard rod in a manner reminiscent of the Jaguar D-type. This was a significant improvement over the other saloons and XK sports cars. It was an instant success on its debut in 1955 and went on to supersede the bigger Mark VII in terms of sales. Later an option was added to fit the 3.4 version of the XK engine into the Mark 1 prompting increased sales. Mark 1 3.4-litre saloons competed successfully in many rallies, touring car, and saloon car races. Just a few notable drivers included Stirling Moss, Mike Hawthorn, Tommy Sopwith, and Roy Salvadori. It gained certain notoriety when on January 22, 1959 former motor racing world champion Hawthorn was killed in an accident involving his own highly-tuned 3.4-litre, Mark 1 on the Guildford bypass in Surrey, England. However in 1959 Jaguar decided on retiring the Mark 1 in favor of a more updated

DEAR READERS in North America, How I envy you reading this column somewhere with the sun shining and enjoying its warmth. I am bundled up on a couch looking out to raindrops clinging on an empty clothesline. Its on a soft wet July afternoon in the countryside in a village in County Carlow at a cousins house, and Im very thankful to have a roof over my head listening to the radio playing folk times. I am an hour away from urban Dublin with its incredible mix of wildlife, from humans to scampering foxes by night and daytime sightings of rats in the recession challenged boomtoom. This months book review is courtesy of the bookshelf of a family member who enjoys the outdoors when he grabs time away from keeping the roofs of Dublin patched. I found two books by Collins published by Harper Collins Publishers at www.collins.co.uk. The first one is the 2002 edition of the British Wildlife with 512 pages packed in a small paperback with over 500 pictures of British wildlife describing 500 species of bird, wild flower, tree, wild animal, insect, butterfly, moth, reptile and amphibian. An incredible ID fact file listings to explore the UK after the international wildness of celebrating the Queens 60 years jubilee and hosting the Olympics. Next is the Complete Irish Wildlife by Paul Sterry with an introduction by Derek Mooney. First published in 2004. The essential photographic guide is 319 pages filled with over 1,000 colour photographs illustrating every species described. So what if the sun is on holidays while you visit the fair city, forget about fair weather relatives and so called friends, dont fret about overpriced concerts and closed tourist sites due to budget cuts you are one with the earth with these guides. Nature prevails if we open our eyes and ears to its presence. The bats fly for free along the riverbanks as one strolls with a cousin walking his aging dog. Turn off the DVD, get out of the house no matter the weather and enjoy the wildlife. We have still so much to learn from nature which blooms where we are planted. OBITUARIES

British Comic Actor Eric Sykes

ERIC SYKES, 89, the widely-acclaimed British comedy actor and writer, died July 4. He died at his home after a brief illness, said manager Norma Farnes. Sykes was one of the most popular comic actors of his generation, appearing in shows in Londons West End into his 80s. He began his career writing scripts for BBC shows, co-writing 24 episodes of the classic radio comedy The Goon Show with the late Spike Milligan. He appeared in the Sykes and a sitcom about a brother and sister, played by Hattie Jacques, living together in west London, which ran in the 1960s and 1970s. He went on to write and act in theater shows and movies, including an appearance in The Others starring Nicole Kidman and in the Harry Potter film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Sykes also wrote scripts for Peter Sellers and other major British actors. TV star and former Monty Python member Michael Palin said Sykes was one of the nicest, most decent men in the business and one of a kind. To me, he was a great inspiration, both as a writer and performer, Palin said. Comedy writer Eddie Braben said Sykes was a monumental man of comedy, an inspirational figure for those who aimed for comedy success. He said Sykes death leaves an enormous gap in the field of fun. His was the comedy of innocence. He didnt raise any bruises, only laughter. Sykes was survived by his wife, Eith Eleanore Milbrandt, and his four children.

Three UK Men Kept In Prison After Terrorism Hearing

THREE MEN accused of building a makeshift bomb and making other preparations for a terrorist attack against Britains far-right English Defense League were ordered held in prison last month by a London court. District Judge Daphne Wickham told the men they would be kept in custody until a hearing on July 31. Jewel Uddin, 26, Omar Mohammed Khan, 27, and Mohammed Hasseen, 23, spoke only to confirm their names and ages at a brief hearing at Londons Westminster Magistrates Court. All three men, from the mostly Muslim neighborhood of Sparkhill in Birmingham, were charged with an offense of preparing an act of terrorism, which carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment. They did not enter any pleas to the court or seek to be freed on bail. The three are among seven people who were detained after police stopped a Renault Laguna car on the M1 highway near Sheffield, in central England, after the rally on June 30, suspecting it did not have valid insurance. SHOTGUNS Arnold said police seized the car and that a search of the vehicle carried out two days later found two sawed-off shotguns, ammunition, knives and an improvised explosive device stashed in the boot. The discovery prompted police to trace and arrest the driver, passenger and other suspects. The English Defense League claims to be a peaceful opponent of radical Islam. However, opponents accuse it of racism, and its protests have often turned violent prompting British authorities to occasionally outlaw planned demonstrations by the group. Arnold did not specify whether the suspects alleged plans to attack the rally had failed or whether there was any other reason they did not carry out the alleged plan. Four other people arrested last month in relation to the case are still being questioned by police. Authorities have said the case is not linked to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

We may live without poetry, music and art; We may live without conscience and live without heart; We may live without friends; we may live without books; But civilized man cannot live without cooks.

Former Celtic Striker Joe McBride

JOE MCBRIDE, 74, who was part of the 1967 European Cupwinning squad, has died. Celtic said last month that McBride died at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The British Press Association reports that the former Scotland international suffered a suspected stroke. Celtic manager Neil Lennon says the loss of Joe is terrible news as he was someone who was always very supportive to myself. McBride scored 35 goals in 26 games during the season Celtic won the European Cup, but didnt play in the final against Inter Milan after being injured on Christmas Eve 1966. He played for Celtic between June 1965 and November 1968, scoring 86 goals in 94 games. McBride also played for Scottish clubs Motherwell and Hibernian.

Suspect Held In Slaying Of Family

POLICE say a man thought to be the prime suspect in the slaying of a family of four in England has been arrested in Morocco. The Northamptonshire Police force says a man fitting the description of 53-year-old Anxiang Du was detained July 8 in Tangier. The force said Moroccan police strongly believe that the arrested man is Du, who is wanted for the deaths of university lecturer Jifeng Ding, his wife Ge Chui and their daughters Alice, 12, and Xing, 18. The family was found stabbed to death at home in Wootton, on April 29, 2011. Detectives said last month that they believed Du had fled Britain after the killings and traveled through France and Spain to Morocco. Police said that they would seek Dus extradition.

TRUE, TRUE, and some better than others. Not everyone likes or can cook, and I do understand that, but I cannot ever remembering not liking it. I dont think Domestic Science or any cooking is now taught at schools, which is a great shame, and todays society in general tend to eat out far more than we used to, and unfortunately much of that is all fast food places. Anyway, I wasnt sure what to feature for this month, and decided on a personal favourite of mine, that really isnt British, except it has lots of potatoes and cheese, always a fabulous combination. So I will try to get away with the fact that it has lots of cheese in it, and because Cheddar cheese is a truly British cheese! Jane Grigson was one of Britains first classic food writers, in the early 50s on, and she made the statement which I agree with, that No other country has developed so rich a variety of excellent hard cheeses as England. Cheddar cheese was first made in the Somerset village of Cheddar on the edge of Sedgemoor, near the geological fault known as the cheddar gorge. It was the first English cheese to be made in a regular formula, and first became popular in the 17th century. Potatoes of course are an extremely versatile vegetable, and especially loved by the Scots and Irish. A few weeks ago, we had a pot luck evening with the Sarasota Brit Club, and I made a big portion of this, which was extremely well liked, and I had several requests for the recipe. I have made it several times through the years and it is always popular, also it can be made ahead of time, and if you dont want to

have the oven on the summer, it can also be micro-waved. So in my convoluted way, I am justifying this recipe to be eligible for British culture, even though I adapted it years ago when we were living in Wisconsin another great place for cheese!! So I hope you enjoy another of my versions for the great potato and cheese combination; I will warn you that it is not a low calorie dish! 3 lbs russet potatoes (about 9 medium), peeled and cut into small pieces 2 peeled garlic cloves 8 oz cream cheese, softened 2 Tbsp butter 1/2 cup sour cream 2 cups grated extra sharp cheddar cheese, and 1 cup grated cheddar cheese Salt and pepper 1 package 10oz frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry Place the garlic and potatoes in a large saucepan, cover with water. Cover, bring to a boil, and cook about 15-20 minutes until soft but not too done. Drain well. Return to pan, and mash potatoes and garlic with the cream cheese and butter. Add the sour cream, two cups grated cheese, salt and pepper and spinach. Stir until just mixed. Bake uncovered in a 350 degrees oven for 30 minutes, top with the remaining cheese and bake another 5-10 minutes until the cheese on top has melted. (If micro-waving, cook on high 10-15 minutes) Yield: 10-12 servings.

England 272-5 at 50 overs. Australia 257-9 at close. At the Kia-Oval, England won by six wickets. Australia 251-7 at 50 overs. England 252-4 at close. The third match at Edgbaston, was washed out without a ball bowled. England won the next game at Durham by eight wickets, taking a 3-0 lead and thus winning the series. Australia 200-9 at 50 overs. England 201-2 at close. The final game at Old Trafford saw the D/L method used to decide the result after rain caused delays with England winning by seven wickets. Australia 145-7 at 32 overs. England 138-3 at 27.1 overs. Mid-July, South Africa arrived for a three match Test series in England. They started two warm-ups with games at Taunton and Canterbury, where both matches were drawn. The two dayer against Somerset, gave both sides batting practice but no result. Somerset 312 (James Hildreth 100, Peter Trego 104)-8 dec and 50-1 at close. South Africa 282-9 dec. The three day match against Kent ended similarly. Kent 210 and 96-0 at close. South Africa 314. Nottinghamshire led the County Championship mid-July, with four wins and five losses from nine games leading the table with 116pts. Warwickshire (106pts) and Middlesex with 101pts were chasing. Derbyshire headed Division Two with four wins from nine games with 121pts. Yorkshire (96pts) and Kent (89pts) were playing catch-up Surrey batsman Mark Ramprakesh, announced his retirement from the first class game last month. He made his debut in county cricket as a 17-year-old for Middlesex in 1987, and went on to appear in 52 Tests and 18 ODIs for England. At age 42, his significance at the crease has waned considerably.Sri Lanka won their three Test match home series against Pakistan 1-0. The Sri Lankans won the first Test by 209 runs at Galle, but drew the other matches at Colombo and Pallekele. The European Track Championships in Helsinki, June 24-July 1, gave Britains Olympic hopefuls a chance to check out their strategies and work out any wrinkles before the big event. World 10,000m and 5,000m champion, Mo Farah, produced a gold medal in the 5,000m and thus a positive anticipation for the London Olympics. There was gold for Robbie Grabarz in the long jump, and gold too, for Rhys Williams in the 400m hurdles. Lynsey Sharp took silver in the 800m as did Jo Pavey, in the 10,000m, and the mens 4x400m relay squad. A bronze in the 200m by Danny Talbot, brought Britains medal tally to seven. 18-year-old Adam Gemili ran a 10.05 in the 100m at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, that absolutely earned him a place on the British squad. Mark Webber of the Red-Bull Renault team won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, July 8, with Fernando Alonso second and team-mate Sebastian Vettel third. Top finishing Brit was Lewis Hamilton in eighth place. Alonso won the European Grand Prix at Valencia late June. The Spaniard leads the Formula One drivers table mid-July with 129pts, followed by Webber (116pts) Vettel (100pts) and Lewis Hamilton fourth with 92pts. The French yacht Groupama, won the

picked his spots, and several time shook Haye. At the end of the fifth, Chisora (15-3) went down after a vicious combination, staggered to his feet, and was promptly savaged by the Hayemaker again. Amir Khans career took a jolt at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, July 14, when the unbeaten Danny Garcia (24-0) claimed his WBA light-welterweight crown after the Bolton man was halted in the fourth round. Khan (26-3) was caught by Garcia three times, and three times was on the canvas, before the ref intervened to stopped the fight. Its the second defeat in a row for the 25-year-old Khan, who lost a controversial bout with Lamont Petersen in December of last year. The 12 clubs of the Scottish Premier League voted 10-1, with one abstention to block the newly bought out Rangers, membership of Scotlands premier soccer division. Charles Greens Sevco Consortium then applied to join the Scottish Football League with an eye on a place in the first division. The SFL voted overwhelmingly to accept Rangers application, but voted that the former powerhouse of Scottish football should start in Division three, and not Division one. Charles Green accepted the decision and said, We just want to get back to playing football again. Many of the clubs in Scottish Division Three have gate capacities of only 3,000-4,000, and the mind boggles should Rangers supporters arrive en-masse. Turmoil off the pitch continued, when many of Rangers players refused to sign for the new Sevco Group and found other clubs. Those on the move included, Steven Naismith, Steven Whittaker, Steve Davis, Lyle Lafferty and Jamie Ness. Early in the month, coach Ally McCoist, was reputed to have just six players with regular first team experience. Stuart Pearce, the coach of the Great Britain Olympic soccer team chose to leave out David Beckham from the 18 man squad. He chose Ryan Giggs as captain, Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards instead. Pearce selected a team of 13 Englishmen, and five Welshmen, with the option of three players over the age of 23. The 37-year-old, LA Galaxys David Beckham has made no secret of his desire to play for the first GB Olympic soccer team ever, but coach Pearce made it known that he would not pick his squad using sentiment, but rely on form and merit. He informed Beckham with a personal phone call. Diego Maradonna was sacked by Al Wasl, the United Arab Emirate club, he has led for the last twelve months. After concluding the season finishing eighth in a league of twelve clubs, the whole board resigned in disgust. The new boards first dramatic move was to terminate the Argentinians contract which still had a year to run. The qualifying rounds of the new 2012-13 European competitions began last month, though British success was thin on the ground. In the first qualifying round of the Champions League, Northern Ireland champions Linfield, tied two goalless encounters with B36 of the Faroe Islands, but went through on a 4-3 penalty shootout. In the second qualifying round, first leg, July 1718, the Ulster side struggled in Cyprus and went down 3-0 to AEL. The New Saints, the Welsh Champions, drew a goalless encounter at home in their first leg with Helsingborgs IF of Sweden. The first qualify round of the Europa League saw the three Welsh clubs exit. Bangor City tied 0-0 at home against Zimbru of Moldova, but lost the away leg 2-1. Llanelli managed a 1-1 home draw with KuPS of Finland, but had lost the away leg 2-1. Cefn Druids tied MYPA 0-0 at home, but crashed 5-0 in Finland. Ulsters Cliftonville and Crusaders did not have much luck either and both were knocked out. California Rowing Club won the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta last month, securing the last of three titles for American crews on finals day at the historic annual event. The California crew, made up of oarsmen who just missed out on selection for the London Olympics, beat Brown by 1 lengths on the River Thames to win the mens coxed eights, widely considered the most prestigious race at the event. Brown lost the other all-American final too as freshmen from the University of Washington won the Temple Challenge Cup by three lengths to regain the title the school won in 2010. It was the fifth boat from the United States in the past six years to win the student coxed eights at Henley. Harvard won the Ladies Challenge Plate by overtaking Leander Club of England in the final few meters.

THE 126 th Wimbledon, June 25-July 7, witnessed Andy Murray become the first Briton to reach a mens Wimbledon singles final since 1938, and looking to be the first British singles winner since Fred Perry in 1933. His clash with Roger Federer provided a scintillating and tense game of extraordinary tennis, that brought the nation to a halt as the population crowded the nearest television set. The Dunblane Scot took the first set, but Federer, continued to be dangerous and slowly began taking hold of the match shot by shot. The Swiss player would win his seventh Wimbledon crown and his 17th Major title edging Andy Murray, 5-7,6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Interviewed directly after the final Murray joked Im getting closer, but he was obviously heartbroken and close to tears. Still seeking his first Grand Slam win, Murray reached his third Grand Slam final with victories over Nicolay Davydenko, Ivo Karlovic, Marcos Baghdatis, Marin Cilic, and David Ferrer while beating Jo Wilfried Tsongas of France in the semi-finals. Eleven Britons commenced the first round of the singles contest but as the first week concluded only Andy Murray was left flying the flag. Of the six women, three made it to the second round with Elena Baltacha, facing the 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvita who eased past the Briton. Anne Keothavong met the French Open finalist Sara Errani of Italy, and never got going with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat. Heather Watson, the 20-year-old from Guernsey, beat Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic in the first round, becoming the first British woman to win on Centre Court since Jo Durie back in 1985. She beat American qualifier Jamie Lee Hampton in the second, but the third seed, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, put Watson out 6-0, 6-2, in the third. A British woman has not reached fourth round Wimbledon since Sam Smith in 1998. Serena Williams captured the Wimbledon womens crown beating Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets and then won the womens doubles title assisted by sister Venus; who has been suffering with Sjoren syndrone and has played little tennis of late. She crashed out 6-1, 6-3, in the first round of singles to Elena Vesnina of Russia. Sheffield based Jonathan Marray, went into the history books becoming the first Brit to win a Wimbledon doubles title in 76 years, when he and partner Frederik Nielson of Denmark, beat Horia Tecau of Germany, and Robert Lindstedt of Sweden 4-6, 6-4 ,7-6, 6-7, 6-3 in the final. On the Brit mens singles side, James Ward beat Pablo Andujar of Spain, before losing a tough five setter again the American, Mardy Fish. Three other Britons failed to make it out of the first round. Newly crowned French Open champion Rafael Nadal, was stunned by Lukas Rosel, in a five set upset, that saw the 100th ranked Czech player oust the Spaniard in the second round. Australia arrived for their five match ODIs series against England, with a couple of warm-up games late June. They opened at a rainy Grace Road against Leicestershire winning by 102 runs using the D/L method. Australia 241-8. Leicestershire 136 all out. At Stormont, against Ireland, they did not get much practice after rain interfered and the match was abandoned with Ireland 36-

Volvo Ocean Race (formerly the Whitbreadround-the-World-Race) where thousands of sailing fans welcomed the fleet as it arrived after its final short leg from LOrient, France, to Galway. The New Zealand-Spanish yacht Camper, crossed the line first at Irelands third largest city, but Groupama skippered by Franck Cammas, had already attained an uncatchable points lead to secure victory in the 11th running of this ocean race. Over a ten day period, Galway attracted nearly a million visitors to the Race Village and Global Village, where the six, seventy foot racing yachts rested after their epic voyage around the globe. The final games of the international summer tours were concluded early last month. England finished their South African tour with a 14-14 tie against the Springboks, Scotland edged Samoa 17-16, New Zealand squashed Ireland 60-0. Italy beat the USA 30-10, and the French won 49-10 in Argentina. Sheffields Danny Willett witnessed his name etched on his very first golfing trophy, after winning the BMW International in Cologne, after playing the eighteenth hole four times in a play-off with Marcus Fraser of Australia. The pair had both finished on 11 under 277 Persistence must be Jamie Donaldsons middle name, as he played his 255th tournament without a win at the Irish Open at Royal Portrush, that concluded July 1. This time however, the 36-year-old Welshman birdied five of the last nine holes on the final round and took his first title with a 18 under 270,four strokes ahead of the field. Same weekend, Tiger Woods found his winning ways where an eight under 276, saw him claim the AT&T National crown at Bethesda, Maryland, for the fourth time in his career. British journeyman Roger Chapman, won the US Senior Open at Lake Orion, Michigan, July 15, coming from behind on the last round to win with a 10 under 270, two strokes ahead of the field. The Briton collected a winners purse of half-a-million dollars. Two months ago, he won the US Senior PGA Championship too. The 53-yearold Chapman who lives in Ascot, had a fairly non-descript record on the European tour winning a few minor tournaments around the year 2000. His persistence and love for the game is finally paying off. Same weekend, Jeev Milka Singh won the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart, where he beat Francisco Molinari in a play-off after both players had finished on a 17 under 271. Singh was four behind going into the final round. Wladimir Klitscho retained his WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles at Berne, Switzerland July 7, after a sixth round stoppage of Tony Thompson (36-3). The Ukrainian (57-3) had beaten the 40-year-old Maryland fighter back in 2008. A massive right hand punch had Thompson shaken in the fifth, and the American succumbed to the canvas in the following round where his corner decided enough was enough. Former WBA champion David Haye finished off former British heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora in the fifth round at Upton Park, July 14, where on a rainy night some 30,000 plus gathered to see this advertised grudge fight. Chisora weighed in at a hefty 247lbs, while Haye was 210lbs, the lightest hed been in six fights. Chisora showed he could take a punch as the Londoner (26-2)

WEST HAM UNITED have agreed a 2m loan fee with Liverpool for Andy Carroll reports the BBC. The season-long deal for the England striker could result in a 17m transfer at the end of the campaign, provided the Hammers stay in the Premier League. However, it is thought the 23-year-old Carroll does not wish to leave Liverpool on a permanent basis.

West Ham Agree Loan Fee With Liverpool For Carroll

EPL Teams Touring The US

TIM CAHILLS move from Everton to New York Red Bulls for a reported fee of 1m fell right in the middle of several Premier League clubs visits to the United States. Cahill, 32, has struggled with injuries since the 2010 World Cup and with a year remaining on his Everton contract the club agreed to one of the few direct moves of a Premier League player to Major League Soccer. The Red Bulls, which employed former Notts County forward Luke Rodgers last year and have been thwarted by visa snafus to get him back, acquired Cahill just two days before the MLS All-Stars took on European champion Chelsea in Philadelphia, beating them 3-2. Chelsea began its tour by beating Seattle Sounders, 4-2, with 18-year-old forward Romelu Lukaku scoring two of the goals and new signings Eden Hazard and Marko Marin also finding the net. Midfielder Frank Lampard, who had been spotted at a Galaxy game earlier in the summer, fended off rumors that he might be bound for the LA club. That would require to either sign Lampard to a very modest contract or get rid of one its three designated players: David Beckham, Robbie Keane or Landon Donovan. Also touring in the US were Aston Villa which during the summer re-signed American keeper Brad Guzan and has retained defender Eric Lichaj and Stoke City, which for weeks had been discussing the purchase of Houston Dynamo defender Geoff Cameron. The two sides reached agreement on a fee of 1.6m in mid-July but as of a week later negotiations for personal terms had not been completed. He would not qualify for a work permit, as he doesnt meet the 75-percent threshold of competitive caps during the past two years, and so the club would have to appeal. Liverpool, in the midst of negotiating the purchase rights for US and Fulham forward Clint Dempsey, opened its tour of North America by tying Toronto FC, 1-1. New manager Brendan Rodgers fielded Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva, who had been sidelined since November with a serious knee injury, and also gave time to prospects Dani Pacheco and Nathan Eccleston alongside veterans Jose Enrique and Jamie Carragher. The Fenway Sports Group, which purchased Liverpool a year-and-a-half ago, mistakenly posted a story on its Web site July 18 that said a deal for Dempsey had been concluded. Fulham immediately issued a statement that a formal bid had yet to be submitted, much less accepted. A fee of 7.5m had been reported by several outlets with no corroboration from the clubs or Dempseys representatives. Liverpool took on Roma at Fenway Park on the second game of their tour and came away on the end of a 2-1 defeat. Roma took a two goal lead through Michael Bradley and Alessandro Florenzi before Charlie Adam pulled one back for the Reds. Next opponents for Liverpool were Tottenham in Baltimore. The Reds and Spurs battled to a scoreless tie before 42,723 fans at the home stadium of the NFLs Baltimore Ravens. During its tour of the US Roma unveiled new signing Michael Bradley, the US international midfielder who joined from Chievo Verona in a $4.6m transfer. Bradley, the son of former US coach Bob Bradley, started his pro career with New York MetroStars in 2004 and aside from a frustrating loan stint with Aston Villa, has played regularly for Heerenveen and Borussia Moenchengladbach as well as Chievo, for which he played 31 Serie A matches and scored one goal in helping the club finish 11th. Bradley played for Roma July 22 against Polish club Zaglebie Lubin in a friendly at Wrigley Field in Chicago, not far from where he lived as a teenager while his father coached Chicago Fire in MLS. These are special moments, Bradley said to the New York Times. I know a lot of people here, and playing in front of friends and family are good memories. But if Im being honest, Im thinking a lot more about the opportunity I have at Roma.

Englands Next Half Back Pairing?

TROUBLED three-quarter Danny Cipriani has now returned to Sale Sharks to compete for a place in the England side after a couple of years in Australia. He has affirmed that his ultimate goal is a place back in the national squad. Ciprianis dbut came in 2008 when he kicked 18 points By John Polley against Ireland in Brian Ashtons teams 33-10 victory. Sales boss Steve Diamond believes that Cipriani is Englands next superstar, the new Jonny Wilkinson. Englands 25-year-old scrum-half, Danny Care, seems to have put his past behind him following a successful tour in South Africa. The charge of sexual assault on a woman in Leeds that has been hanging over him since early this year has now been dropped and he can get on with fulfilling his talent on the rugby pitch. Care and Cipriani is this the future? Henson another comeback All is not lost for Gavin Henson, the troubled Welsh centre who has been travelling across the world looking for someone to employ him. London Welsh have qualified for promotion to the English Aviva Premiership. Initially they were refused the step up because of inadequate facilities. Now, however, the Exiles have successfully appealed and will replace the Newcastle Falcons. The Welsh have offered Henson a billet for the season ahead. Managing Director John Taylor is convinced that Henson is the man he wants and already has installed him as the clubs first-choice flyhalf. Incidentally, London Welsh are going into partnership with soccer side Oxford United and intend to share the Oxford Kassam stadium in the coming season. Oxfords owner, Ian Lenagan, also owns the Wigan Warriors who share Wigan football clubs DW Stadium Scottish logic spells success Scotland set themselves the target of reaching the top eight in world rugby by the end of 2012. So far they have climbed to ninth thanks to their unbeaten Australasian summer tour. They also failed to reach their targeted quarter-finals in 2007 and 2011. Meanwhile, their Six Nations win rate has gone no higher than 13 percent under coach Andy Robinson. For all that, their former winger Chris Paterson believes that a Six Nations Grand Slam and victory in the 2015 World Cup are within their grasp. Those two targets are among the aims of the Scottish Rugby Union in the next four years and Paterson is convinced they could be realised as he revealed in an interview with BBC Scotland.. His reasoning is that in the last Six Nations where they finished bottom, they could have won the first three games against Wales, England and France, and then would have only needed to beat Ireland and Italy in the final matches. He pointed out that Scotlands three summer victories were so close they could have been defeats. Hard to fault that logic, eh?

ASTON VILLA has signed Morocco international midfielder Karim El Ahmadi on a threeyear contract from Dutch league runner-up Feyenoord. The 27-year-old El Ahmadi is new coach Paul Lamberts first signing for the Birmingham club.

MANCHESTER UNITED says that defender Chris Smalling will miss the start of the Premier League season after undergoing a foot operation that will rule him out for up to 10 weeks. Smalling, who was just recovering from a groin injury sustained in May that ruled him out of the European Championship, broke a metatarsal last month.

WEST HAM has signed Northern Ireland left back George McCartney for a third time in six years as the London club rebuilds before returning to the Premier League. Senegal midfielder Mohamed Diame and goalkeepers Jussi Jaaskelainen and Stephen Henderson have also joined West Ham during the offseason. McCartney moves to Upton Park from Sunderland after playing on loan at West Ham last season.

DUNDEE WILL replace Rangers in the Scottish Premier League after the Glasgow side were demoted following their financial crisis, clubs decided last month. Dundee finished runner-up last season in the Scottish First Division, the second tier of the game in Scotland. Rangers have been told to relaunch in the fourth tier after collapsing under their debt pile, breaking the stranglehold they and city rivals Celtic have had on the Scottish game for decades.

TOTTENHAM defender Ledley King has retired from football at the age of 31 due to a chronic left knee injury that has troubled him throughout his career. King said that I have missed a lot of football over the years, but the Spurs fans have always been patient and incredibly supportive with me during difficult periods. Sadly my injuries and inability to train have now finally brought an end to my career. King won the League Cup with Tottenham in 2008 and represented England 21 times, including appearances at the 2004 European championship and the 2010 World Cup.

Deng Only NBA Player On Britains Olympic Team

CHICAGO BULLS forward Luol Deng is the only NBA player on a British Olympic basketball squad missing Charlotte Bobcats duo Ben Gordon and Byron Mullens. Deng has recovered sufficiently from a left wrist injury to be included in the 12-man squad announced last month. Deng says the team plan to make Britain proud and adds that he cant wait to step on the court with my teammates at the games. Gordon and Mullens were already out of contention for Britains first Olympic basketball team since 1948. The London-born guard Gordon didnt commit to playing at the games and Mullens is injured. Another London-born player, forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu of the Turkish club Besiktas, also has been included in the squad.

FIFA To Use GoalLine Technology, Additional Referee

FOOTBALL gave its stamp of approval last month to goal-line technology and headscarves for female Muslim players. Also adopted was a proposal for a fivereferee system to officiate matches placing an additional assistant beside each goal. The three decisions will be long-lasting and resonate throughout the world, said Patrick Nelson, chief executive of the Northern Ireland association. FIFA said it will introduce the goal-line mechanism at the seven-team Club World Cup in Japan in December, with plans to use it in Brazil at the 2013 Confederations Cup and 2014 World Cup. We want to make sure that the systems at the World Cup work at 150 percent, not 90 percent, said Jerome Valcke said, secretary general for the governing body. FIFA will use both Hawk-Eye and GoalRef systems in Japan, after they won unanimous support from the International Football Association Board panel, Valcke said. The English Premier League is expected to adopt one of the systems which are likely will cost up to $250,000 per stadium during next season. The ruling on headscarves reversed a ban on the Islamic hijab thats been enforced in FIFA competitions since 2007. Soccer rules prohibit equipment that is dangerous or makes religious statements. FIFA President Sepp Blatter was a member of the IFAB panel that accepted test results showing the technology systems quickly and accurately judge when balls cross the goal line. The IFAB panel is made up of officials from FIFA and the four British soccer associations. Hawk-Eye is a British camera-based system already used in tennis and cricket. GoalRef is a Danish-German project using magnetic sensors to track a special ball. Last months decision was expected and completed Blatters reversal on the matter. FIFA previously blocked using technology to help referees make decisions.

Farrell Joins England Coaching Staff

ANDY FARRELL will join Englands coaching staff on a three-and-half-year contract up until after the World Cup in 2015. Englands Rugby Football Union said last month that Farrell will start his new job next month. He initially turned down a chance to join coach Stuart Lancasters backroom team in April after helping out for the Six Nations on a temporary basis. A former England rugby league and union international, Farrell has left his role with London club Saracens. He said he was massively excited about the potential of the young England team after watching its performances in a battling 2-0 series loss in South Africa last month. Lancaster said I am delighted that we have got Andy on board. England hosts the next World Cup.

LIZZIE ARMITSTEAD played her part in a thrilling finish to the cycling road race only to be out-powered in the finishing sprint down the Mall July 29. Armitstead showed great humility and joy in winning Britains first medal, and was thrilled to be taking home a silver. Armitstead told reporters in the pouring rain: Im so happy we got the ball rolling for Team GB, The previous day had a brought a big disappointment in the mens road race, where British favourite Mark Cavendish and the British team finished well down the field. The winner Kazakh Alexandre Vinokourov was part of a 32-man breakaway that was never caught by the British team that seemed to have the race under control until then. Cavendish paid tribute to his team matess efforts. I can be proud of how the lads rode today. Im proud of my country as there was incredible support. The guys are sat there, they are spent. They have got nothing left in the tank.

Wiggins Becomes Britains First Tour De France Winner

Cavendish, who has now surpassed Andre Darrigade and Lance Armstrong with his 23 Tour stage wins, has won all four sprints he has contested on the landmark avenue. He is also the first reigning world champion to win on the way up to the Arc de Triomphe. Belgian Eddy Merckx holds the record with 34 stage wins on the Tour. INCREDIBLE Its incredible, Cavendish told French TV, holding his baby girl Delilah Grace in his arms. For me this race is everything, its what my whole year is built towards every year, he later told reporters. Overall, Wiggins led compatriot Chris Froome by three minutes 21 seconds and Italian Vincenzo Nibali by 6:19. Have a safe journey and dont get too drunk, Wiggins told the thousands of fans as he topped the podium. His Tour exploits were even saluted at the British Open golf championship in northern England where a yellow jersey was draped on a scoreboard near the 10th hole. British fans wearing Wiggins masks lined the Champs Elysees as he cruised to victory with Britain now set for another cycling party at the London Olympics when Wiggins is among the favourites for gold in the August 1 time trial. The whole country wants to say well done, brilliant, the perfect backdrop and start to the Olympics, British Prime Minister David Cameron said. Reuters

BRADLEY WIGGINS was greeted by thousands of Union Jack-waving fans on the Champs Elysees when he claimed the 99th edition of the Tour de France to become the first British winner of the famous race July 21. Wiggins finished safe in the bunch on the 20th and last stage, a 120-km ride from Rambouillet, as he helped his Sky team mate and fellow Briton Mark Cavendish to victory. What a finish, that was something, Mark won the stage after we led him out in the finale. Wonderful, wonderful, Wiggins told reporters. Asked about making history, Wiggins added: Ive got to start getting used to that now which is strange. Its mission complete. RETURN Next year, pure climbers Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck are expected to return to the race after a doping suspension and injury respectively. A potentially hillier route next July could also threaten Wiggins domination, as could Team Sky rival Chris Froome who finished second this year.

World number 13 Scott, chasing his first major championship, started the last round with a four-shot lead and seemed to be cruising to victory as he maintained that cushion with six holes to play. But a late attack of the jitters

SOUTH AFRICAN Ernie Els won the British Open by one stroke from Adam Scott on July 22 after the Australian suffered an extraordinary late collapse on an incident-packed final day.

caused him to drop strokes at each of the last four holes, allowing Els to slip in through the back door and lift the Claret Jug with a twounder-par 68 and a seven-under total of 273. Scotts sad 75 meant he had to settle for second place on 274, three shots ahead of former world number one Tiger Woods (73), whose hopes were dashed by an ugly triple-bogey at the sixth, and his fellow American Brandt Snedeker (74).
