Part One: On the website I learned about exponents and bases and how to solve a problem using exponents. First we learned about repeated multiplication using the same number, for example 2x2. After that introduction I was introduced to bases and exponents and what they are and what they do. I did some practice with different numbers and played around until I understood how to solve a problem with exponents. After I was comfortable with exponents and lastly I moved on to changing exponents into cubes and squares to show cubed and squared. The base of a power indicates the factor being multiplied The power is the exponent The exponent tells how many factors in the repeated multiplication pattern You can use a power to simplify writing out the whole problem with all of the multiplication You can use geometry to describe cubing or squaring a number because you can change the exponents and the number of times into individual squares, so they can be put together to make cubes. Part two: Base 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 Exponent Meaning 4 3 2 1 0 -1 -2 -3 -4 1/6 1/8 2x2x2x2 2x2x2 2x2 2 2/2 1/2 1/4 0.125 0.625 Value 16 8 4 2 1 0.5 0.25

1. As you increase the exponent, what is operation happening to the base? The base gets multiplied the number of times that the exponent gives 2. Starting with the exponent of 4, as you decrease each exponent, what operation is happening to the base? It is dividing by two 3. Double check your table. Does the pattern work from 2^-4 to 2^4 as the exponent increases each time? Yes 4. Does the pattern work from 2^4 to 2^-4 as the exponent decreases each time? yes Part 3:

What do you get when you add x and x? 2 (x) What do you get when you subtract x from x? 0 What do you get when you multiply x by x? x2 What do you get when you divide x by x? 1 What do you get when you multiply x by x by x? x3 What about x by x by x by x by x? x5 What do you get when you multiply x^2 by x? x3 What about when you multiply x^2 by x^3? 2x5 What about when you multiply x^4 by x^6? 2x10 Come up with a rule that explains what happens when you multiply same bases. When you multiply same bases you can change to the base number with the number of times it is multiplied as the exponent What about when you multiply x^4 by x^2? 2x6 What do you get when you divide x^5 by x^3? 18 What about when you divide x^6 by x? 16 Come up with a rule that explains what happens when you divide same bases. The base is always going to be one What do you get when you square x^3? 3x2 What do you get when you square x^4? 4x2 What do you get when you cube x^2? 2x3 What do you get when you raise x^3 to the fourth power? 3x4 What do you get when you raise x^2 to the fifth power? 2x5 Come up with a rule that explains what happens when you raise a base with an exponent by an exponent. You keep the same base and you multiply the exponent
