Analysis of the trailer for the movie Stomp the yard

The movie I have chosen to write about is stomp the yard, which was directed by Sylvain white and starred Columbus shot, Meagan good and ne yo, this film also released on the 16th of March 2007, this film is about a talented street dancer whose brother gets shot, after being ambushed by other dancers. He moves way to college with guilt hanging on his shoulders and tries to stay under the radar, but then he is brought into a world where he never thought he would be part of again and soon starts to believe that might be able to make his brother proud. He also encounters a rivalry dance groups and love interests, which complicates his choice of a non complicated life. The genre of the film is dance romance because it features scenes that include dance routines and non-diegtic music over those scenes. It also features some scenes of two of the characters in romantic situations. The genre of dance originally comes from the genre musicals, which includes singing, acting and dancing elements because of this the genre of dance always includes music that is very important to setting the atmosphere of whats going on in the Scene.

Narrative
The narrative of the film follows the story line of a boy goes through a tragedy and blames himself, so then he moves away from his home town and decides to give up the thing he loves as some sort of punishment, but when he then he then he gets into a variation of what he loves, but hes arrogance and stubbornness ruins that for him then he realises that the guilt, arrogances and stubbornness is in his way of his dreams. There are three theories that exhibit key aspects of a film. The three theories are todorovs theory, which states that there are five stages that each film goes through equilibrium, disequilibrium, repair, recognition and new equilibrium. The equilibrium, dancing with his brother and crew , the disequilibrium is when his brother dies, recognition is when he moves away and starts college to get away from the situation, repair is when he joins the fraternity and starts dancing, he also meets a girl and new equilibrium is when he wins the competition and is together with the girl .propps theory is that in every media film there is 8 key characters, the hero, the villain, the damsel in distress, the donor, the father, the false hero, the dispatcher, the helper. The hero is DJ, the villain is grant, the damsel in distress is April, the father is the principal, the dispatcher is duron, and the helper is ne-yo. Strausss theory is that all films contain binary opposites, which create conflict within the film and provokes

more interest for the audiences. The binary opposites within this film are poor and rich, upper class and lower class, love and hate, female and male, old and young and dead and alive.

Media language/cinematography
Within this trailer there is a wide range of shots, angles and movement that are used to help the audience identify the events that are going on. In the trailer a lot of establishing and long shots are used to highlight and show the places the characters are in and the people that are around them, the type of shots also show the audiences the relationship between the characters because of their body language. Examples of these shots are at the beginning and at the end of the trailer. In the beginning the audience is shown a dark room which is semi lit with lights on the ceiling and there is a crowd that is in a circle around a dance floor of some kind. This immediately makes the audience wary of whats going on and might make them think that there is something violent going on in that place. Also there is a lot of slow motion shown in the trailer that highlights specific dance moves and the step group come together to do tasks. This makes the audience feel like the dance moves are specially important or hard and it also makes them feel like the members of the group are becoming more unified .there is also a pan used during the long shots and establishing shots to give the audience a full view of whats going on in the scene. Close ups are also shown in this trailer to highlight significant things within the movie for example there is a close up of the picture that DJ looks at on the train of him and his brother. This tells the audience that his brother means a lot to him. Another camera shot that is in the trailer is two shots and over the shoulder of the characters, this shot helps us to understand the relationships between the characters and how they feel about each other. For example when we see a scene where DJ and duron are walking together we see at lot of brotherly love between these characters. Sound At the start of this trailer it uses sound to help build a picture of the surroundings of the characters, the type of sound is diegtic because you would have ordinarily have heard those if you were in that scene but maybe not at that volume .the type of sound that you hear is dogs barking and guns shots which shows you that the environment that DJ grew up in and that it was dark and dangerous. There is also voice overs that either starts off the next scene or they finish up from the last scne, this helps the audiences follow the storyline more clearly.

Editing The editing styles in the film consist of fade into black for the more action based scenes, for instant when there is fight happening or the start of a dance battle, this creates suspense and make the audience wonder whats going on. There is also continuity editing that is used for the dance scene so the audience can see the different moves transition into each other, also for more of the happier or romantic scene there is dissolves that create the atmosphere of mystery. Also there are a lot of basic cuts between the different scenes. Mise-en-scene Mise-en-scene includes costume, lighting, props, setting and etc .in this trailer the lighting is very important because it goes in a type of circle, where it starts of dark and only highlighting important characters body language, then it goes to being high key light, because they scenes become very brightly lit and the end at the dance competition the lighting goes back to being low key light with more bright shots then the start of the trailer, this is done to show a journey for the main character and how he is able to combined his old world with his new world. Also the costumes highlight their status and their personalities for example DJ the main character mostly wears dark colours throughout the movie, whereas most of the other characters wear more bright clothing ,which shows he feels like a outside among everybody, it also shows that they may have not had as much hardships that he may had in his life. The locations of the of the scenes helps us as the audience identify the situation, for example within the first 30 seconds of the trailer we see the characters are in alley which makes us think that something bad might happen, then as the scene goes on a fight occurs which tells us that the characters may be in some sort of trouble. However when we see the locations of the school and it has grass fields and tall buildings. We immediately see safety and comfort, but that becomes a contradiction when another fight occurs.

Iconography/genre
When it comes to the genre the visual aspects or the iconography really help the audience to understand the types of genre and the storyline of the movie. Within this trailer we are shown a numerous of things that makes us identify that the genre id dance. One of those things that show the genre is the location. Some of the places are shot in big empty rooms which we know from previous dance films that dancers like to practice. Also the typical dancers costumes are shown, which includes trainers caps, track suits and baggy trousers. This helps us to identify if the characters are dancers or not.

Representation
The representation types are mainly focused on class and status, gender, age. The lower class people are shown as being more involved in more crime related situations and they also have very bad backgrounds and family lifes, where as the high class people appear to have a normal family life, behaved children and their normally pliers of the community. In this trailer person has many distinctive aspects that differentiate them from the higher people, for example they way they dress is very different, a lower class person would wear a lot of tracksuits and caps, where as a higher class person would were trousers and shirts, also anyone characteristic that sets them apart is the way they talk, a lower class person would mostly talk in slang, where as a higher class person would speak more proper. This trailer goes against the stereotype that higher class people are white and lower class people are black, in the trailer both the higher class person and the lower class person is black. Another representation type is gender, in this trailer all the men seem to be very arrogant, stubborn, hot-tempted and strong, where as the women seem to be the peace makers and they look weaker compared to the men within the trailer, this shows that the trailer is conforming to the stereotypes .this stereotype also makes the audiences feel like the men are the most important characters and the women are just there to be a pretty face. Audience The audience of this film will mostly be young boys from the ages of 13-29, they will probably be interest in dance as a hobby and they might also come from a bad background like the main character, so they will be able to relate to his problems. They will probably in the C2 bracket and they will be lower class. They will also probably wear the same kind clothes like the main character, which are mostly trainers, caps and tracksuits.

Conclusion
Overall the film exhibits the right kind of narrative and cinematography for genre and its representation of different groups of people mostly confirm to the stereotypes. Except for how it shows lower class and higher class in terms of race. The mise-en-scene used reflects the audience of the film and I think they will be able to relate to the issues within the film. The film might also inspire them to start dancing as a hobby or maybe even think about it as a career.
