Being great means just being the best that you can be. I define being great or being a winner by always trying your best, and putting in the preparation to do that, and being willing to accept the outcome. In other words, have a great self-esteem based on work and accomplishment. - Mike Krzyzewski Head Basketball Coach Duke University.

Happenings Around CJHS

The 7th Grade Students will attend an anti-bullying presentation at Three Rivers School on October 18, 2013 by presenter Brooks Gibbs. The assembly will begin at the start of the school day so students who ride a morning bus route will be dropped off at Three Rivers School instead of CJHS. Students who are car-riders in the morning are asked to be dropped off at their normal time at Three Rivers School. There will be one bus scheduled to leave CJHS at 8:00 a.m. to transport pedestrians, bike riders and anyone else who forgot, from CJHS to Three Rivers for the assembly. CSD17 Buses will transport all students back to CJHS after the assembly ends, around 9:15 a.m. Special Note: 8thGrade students should start their day at CJHS in the morning, as per their normal routine. They are going on a different field trip on this day. The 8th Grade Students will have two field trip opportunities in the month of October . On October 18, 2013, students will be bused to Channahons own Dollinger Family Farm to observe several Civil War re-enactment speakers, including actors representing President and Mrs. Lincoln, Harriet Tubman and Stephen Douglas. There will be other displays and reenactments based on that historical time period. There is no cost for this field trip. We plan to leave CJHS at 8:15 a.m. and return at 11:15 a.m. in time for the normal lunch period. The second field trip will occur on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 23rd. The 8 thgraders will take the Explore Test on the morning of the 23rd, and then go on a fun field trip in the afternoon to the movies as a reward for their hard work and the stress of the morning. The cost of this field trip per student is $5.25, which includes admission, a drink, box of popcorn and candy. Students will have two movie options. We plan to leave CJHS after the lunch period at 11:30 AM and return to school by 2:30 PM in time for normal dismissal. A permission slip for both field trips is being sent home Thursday. Permission slips for both 7th and 8th graders will be sent home this afternoon (10/10). Permission slips must be returned on Tuesday morning, 10/15, to your childs first hour teacher. The inaugural meeting of the CJHS Chess Club was a great success! Hosted by Mrs. Lindstrom, there were 23 students in attendance. The next Chess Club Event will be Wednesday, November 20th.

Helping Children Eat A Balanced Meal with Foods from All the Food Groups
The New My Plate teaches children what a balanced healthy meal looks like. A healthy plate includes food from all the food groups. This means: fruits and vegetables that fill up half the plate, some healthy lean protein, high calcium with vitamin D food like milk, whole grains filled with fiber and vitamins. Helping children make a healthy plate that is balanced with the five food groups can sometimes be a challenge. Not to mention, trying to find easy lunch ideas or dinner ideas for kids that are balanced is even harder. After all, we know children have their own opinions and tastes. But there are some things you can do to encourage your child and set them up for success at the dinner table! Here are some simple strategies you can use to help the whole family that promote servings from all the food group: Have a menu with all the colors of the food groups and have the children pick one food from each of the food groups to have during meal time. Provide a nice variety of foods from each of the food groups. Encourage your child to take one scoop from each of the food groups. Have a couple vegetables and fruits to choose from. Even fresh and sliced is okay. Kids like to dip. You can have some vegetables cut up and a low fat dressing. Encourage kids to have fun coloring their plate with foods that have color. Youll see that colorful foods tend to be the healthier foods. If children are resistant to whole grain foods, then try mixing them. For example, try mixing some white rice with some brown rice. That helps them get used to the taste. Include one healthy carb from the grains food group. For example, serve just whole wheat bread, brown rice or whole wheat pasta instead of pasta and bread. Cut lean meats into small portions before placing them on the table so they are more inviting to a child's small mouth. Avoid sodas, sugary drinks and fruit juices during meals. But if they insist on some juice, one six -ounce glass a day of 100% fruit juice is plenty. Include water as part of a healthy meal, its great for the digestion

If your child eats a balanced food with some foods from all the food groups, they will feel better and have more energy.

A Message for all students who plan to attend Minooka High School Football Games
This year, just as in previous years, there are some basic guidelines that we at MCHS ask visiting Junior High students to observe when attending the home games.
Those guidelines are as follows: Junior High students will only be permitted entrance to the game when accompanied by a parent/adult. This parent/adult must remain at the game if the parent/adult leaves, so too must the Junior High student. Junior High students may sit with their parent. If the student chooses not to sit with their parent, he/she must remain in the designated area for Junior High students. Junior High students must be in possession of their Junior High School student IDs

OUR DRUG-FREE PLEDGE

The faculty and staff at CJHS are committed to promoting the safety and well -being of our students through our ongoing anti-drug efforts. We believe that we are blessed with some great students and an outstanding community, however, the impact of drug abuse can be felt in all areas. Students are aware that the possession, distribution, or use of drugs at school or any school related function is absolutely prohibited. The school reserves the right to search school property and equipment owned or controlled by the school (such as lockers, desks and parking lots). Although we believe that our students make good choices in regards to drug usage, we also believe in being diligent in the deterrence of any and all drug abuse. We also intend to allow local law enforcement to conduct drug-dog searches to help ensure a safe and drug-free environment at least once every school year.

Learn about the progress we are making with bringing the B2B approach into our schools and learn how to effectively teach your child)ren how to handle relational aggression.

What is Relational Aggression?

.it is a pervasive form of bullying that often goes unnoticed purposely intending to harm or manipulate relationships to hurt someone. .adults play a critical role in preventing and intervening in relational aggression. The first step is not letting it go unnoticed by learning how to identify bullying behaviors of relational aggression. Examples include: exclusion forming cliques, turning your back to someone, saving seats; alliance building requiring friends to drop others in order to be in your group, using lies or rumors to get others mad at someone; rumor spreading sharing secrets; indirect actions pretending to compliment someone you dont like; and covert actions negative body language or rolling eyes. .it is difficult to address because it occurs within peer group considered to be friends. Find out more about relational aggression and how to identify it and intervene by attending Bullies 2 Buddies (for parents only) on October 23rd at 6:30 in the Three Rivers library
