Conducting Training Workshop

A CRASH COURSE FOR BEGINNERS

Sonia D. Teran Tinago High School

Context of the Training

To get the right fit, consider the context of your training. Three major factors must be considered
1. Learners 2. Content 3. Resources

The Learners
The training you develop must match the background of the learners.

Key pointers: Do not underestimate or overestimate. Watch your pace. Watch your jargons. Keep them at ease

Items to incorporate in the training

Begin with icebreaker. Deal with resistance. Include goals and expectation sessions. Address administrative issues.

The Content
As a general rule, allow the learners to influence the content as much as you can.
Choose the right method. Choose level of difficulty.

The Resources
A. Training Facilities check in advance the room you will be using. B. Room Arrangement depending on the size of participants, facilitators can choose whether to use a particular sitting arrangement to maximize group participation. Styles to choose from are: auditorium style, schoolroom style, or conference room style. C. Equipment prepare equipment needed. D. Materials prepare materials needed.

Identifying Learning Objectives

Objective is a statement of what the learners will be able to accomplish as a result of the training.

Why are we here?

How will we know when we get there?

Where do we want to go?

Selecting Instructional Methods and Strategies

One of the most emphasized principles of effective training is to get people actively involved. The treasure of learning is in the joy of discovery, and this is something learners must do for themselves.

Clarifying Terms
Method a way of presenting a topic. Strategy is a specific procedure used to supplement a method.

Technique is a specific action taken by the trainer that helps implement the method.

Choosing and Using Training Aids

Keep in mind when choosing training aids that the useful is of much more importance and value than the ornamental.

Why use training aids?

To practice learning objectives for hand-on-tasks

such as mannequins to practice CPR. To emphasize a key point. To give visual representation of a concept, such as graph or organizational chart. To simplify a point. To add a variety of interest. To focus attention on a specific area, such as in maps.

Suggested training aids

a. Handouts b. Flip charts c. Overhead transparencies d. 35mm slides e. Videotapes/CDs

f. Power points
g. Still pictures h. Realia

Making Explanations Clear

The average person speaks at a rate of 150 words per minute or 9000 words per hour.

If you listened to 9000 words on a topic that was new to you, how would you know what was critical and what was not?
Unless the trainer does something to emphasize the key points, the listener may miss them altogether.

What to identify: Some key questions

What is absolutely essential to meet the learning objectives? What is difficult to learn? Are safety factors involved in the task?

Are you aware of problems the learners have experienced with the task youre training them to perform?

Ways to emphasize key points

1. Spend ample time discussing the point. 2. Ask check question that correspond to the key point 3. Use visual aids to highlight key points.

Ways to emphasize key points

4. Use examples.

5. Review what you have taught. 6. Organize your material. 7. Avoid vague language.

Polishing Communication Skill

Although trainers are not performers, they still need effective personal presentation skill to gain and maintain the interest of the listeners.

The old rule: Know what you are going to say first and know what you are going to say last.

Cont.
Attention Getter - focus the listeners attention on the topic. Some techniques are as follows: share personal experience ask rhetorical questions relate interesting fact or statistics show a brief clip or video tell a joke conduct a role play

Cont.

Motivation Statement tell the listeners specifically how they will benefit from the training. Learning Objectives the cornerstone of the training. Overview of the training a preview of what to come, brief summary of how time will be spent. Relationship of training to past and future training show how one training relates or builds to another.

Cont.
The Conclusion contains the following items. A. Final Questions B. Summary is a brief review of what the lesson contained. Make it effective by restating the lesson in four to six key ideas. C. Closing statement cues the listener that the lecture or training is over.

Verbal Skills
Checklist
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Articulation be clear and distinct. Conversational tone vary tone and inflection. Grammar brush up on your grammar. Vocabulary suited to the learners background. Fillers dont overuse. Volume adjust to size of the group.

Cont.

Evaluating Training Effectiveness

Evaluation is necessary to improve trainers and the making of a training design.

Broad sources of information for evaluating 1. Learners feedback 2. Verbal feedback 3. Written feedback 4. Self evaluation 5. Staff

Good Luck Trainers! Thank you.
