Various Avasthas of planets have been described.

Avasthas are the states of a pl anet which are to be considered in the context of the effects of the Planets. Baal Adi Avasthas Five types of Avasthas are explained in BPHS Say: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Baal (Infant) Kumar (young Kid) Yuva (Adoloscent/Young) Vriddh (Old) Mrit (Dead)

These Avasthas (Baal adi avasthas) are described on the basis of their position in the house they are situated in. Each house is divided in five parts of six degrees each. Counting of baal adi avasthas are started forward from begining of house in odd Signs and backward from end in even signs. In simple language, In odd signs they rule each part in sequence, whereas in eve n signs the sequence is reversed. Below is the table of baal adi avasthas in simplest Baal (Infant): 1-6 degrees for odd signs, 25-30 degrees for even signs, Kumar (young Kid): 7-12 degrees for odd signs, 19-24 degrees for even signs, Yuva (Adoloscent/Young): 13-18 degrees for odd signs, 13-18 degrees for even sig ns, Vriddh (Old): 19-24 degrees for odd signs, 7-12 degrees for even signs, Mrit (Dead): 25-30 degrees for odd signs, 1-6 degrees for even signs, Results of these Avasthas: These avasthas serve two purpose. First is the grade of result and second is the timing of result. By "Grade of Result of a planet" we means to what intensity or with which streng th the effects of planets will be evident. BPHS explains this as below.

Baal (Infant) - one fourth (1/4 of total strength) Kumar (young Kid) - half (1/2 of total strength) Yuva (Adoloscent/Young) - Full (with full strength) Vriddh (Old) - Neglibile (Minimal effects will be evident) Mrit (Dead) - Nil (Virtually no result of the planet may be evident) By "Timing of results" we mean when the graha will give the results. The planet in baal avastha will give results too early and within some time of starting it's dasha period. While Planet in mrita avastha graha may give results too late during it's dasa p eriod.

3) Deeptaadi Avastha This avastha is based on the relationships of a planet in a particular chart. i. e temporary relationships and compound relation ships based on the position of planets in the chart. Thes e avasthas indicate the energy or resources a planet have to express itself in the chart. These are of nine types, as follows: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) Deepta Swastha Pramudita Shaanta Deena Vikala Dukhita Khal Kop

1) Deepta Avastha: If a planet is in it's exaltation sign then it is said to be in Deepta avastha (Excited state). In Deepta avastha planet is a sort of excited and hyperactive. 2) Swastha Avastha: If a planet is in own Sign or Mooltrikon sign it is said to be in Swastha avastha (Healthy state). In swastha avastha planet is relaxed and dutiful and planet is able to express upto it's maximum. 3) Pramudita Avastha: When a planet is in great friend's sign then it is said to be in pramudita avastha (Happy state). In this state effects of planets are felt considerably although they are lesser as compared to Swastha avastha.

In layman's language we can roughly say that it can give 75% of results (Althoug h this grading is not scientific and not recommended for serious astrologers). 4) Shaanta Avastha: When a planet is in friend's sign then planet is said to be in Shaanta avastha (calm state). In Shaanta avastha planet is calm. Avasthas from 1 to 4 are considered good for a planet's placement in decending o rder from 1 to 4th 5) Deena Avastha: When a planet is in neutral sign then it is considered in Deen a Avastha (Deena means poor or pityful) In Deena avastha a planet is not comfortable, suppose the state of a person who is not getting threat from anybody but still doesnot feel safe either. Deen Avastha is considered neutral for a planet's placement. 6) Vikala Avastha: when a planet is conjuncted with malefic it is considered to be in Viakala avastha (Afraid or Uncomfortable state). In vikal avastha the significance of planet is shadowed by the malefic it is co njunct with 7) Dukhit Avastha: When a planet is in enemy's sign it is considered in Dukhit a vastha (Sad or Sorrowful state). In Dukhit avastha planet is weak and not comfortable in giving it's results. 8) Khal Avastha: when a planet is in great enemy's sign then it is called khal a vastha (Harmed or Hurt state). Some astrologers include debilitation also in Khal avastha. In Khal avastha plan et is not able to give it's results. 9) Kop Avastha: When a planet is eclipsed by Sun then it is called Kop avastha ( "Burnt by anger" state) In Kop avastha effects of a planet are eclipsed by sun. Avasthas from 6-9 are considered bad for a planet's placement in ascending order .

Jaagritaadi Avasthas This avastha is based on the natural relationship of a planet with other planets and position of a planet in a house. A planet can have a friendly, neutral or inmical relation with other planet. A p lanet can be in own house or other planet's house. Based on these 1) Jaagrit Avastha (Awake) 2) Swapna Avastha (Dreaming) 3) Sushupta Awastha (Sleeping) These avasthas can be explained as follows, 1) Jaagrit Awastha: When a planet is in own house or is exalted then a planet is said to be in Jaagrit awastha. As the name suggest, planet is considered awake means that he is fully concious and exhibit satwik properties, planet is capable of giving it's results to it's full capacity. 2) Swapna Avastha: When a planet is in Friend's house or in a neutral house then the planet is said to be in Swapna awastha. As the name suggest planet is considered in dreaming state. In this state planet exhibit rajsic properties and gives result to it's medium (as compared to it's full capacity) 3) Sushupta avastha: When a planet is in enemy's house or is in debilitation the n the planet is said to be in sushupta avastha. As the name suggest planet is considered in Sleeping state and exhibit tamsic pr operties. In this state results of the planet is almost nil.

Avasthas: Shayanadi Avasthas: How to calculate Avasthas: Shayanadi Avasthas: How to calculate

Each avastha type is given a number say 1) Shayan (lying down), 2) Upavesan, (sitting) 3) Netrapani, (Eyes and hands) 4) Prakash, (glowing) 5) Gaman, (On the move/walking) 6) Agaman, (coming) 7) Sabha, (attending an assembly) 8) Agam, (Returning) 9) Bhojan,(Eating) 10) Nritya Lips,(Desirous) 11) Kautuk (Eager) 12) Nidr (Sleeping) Similarly each planet is given a number from 1 to 7 (sun to saturn), each sign i s given a number from 1 to 12 (Aries to Pisces) and each nakshatra is given a nu mber from 1 to 27 (From Ashwini to Revati)

The formula for calculating the Shayanadi avastha is Number of the Nakshatra (occupied by that planet) X (Multiply) Number of the planet X Number of sign in navamsha that planet is in + (Add) Janam Nakshatra (constellation occupied by moon) + Number of ghatis of birth + number of Lagna Rashi (Sign occupied by Lagna in Rashi chart) = Total

Now divide this total by 12. You will get a reminder. This reminder will give yo u the corresponding avastha.

To get the Sub state, Take the square of the number of avastha of planet + Anka value of the person's name's first syllable (hindi varnamala) = Total (Anka value is 1 for a, ka, cha, ? a, dha, bha and va, 2 for i, kha, ja, ?ha, na , ma and sha, 3 for u, ga, jha, ta, pa, ya and sa, 4 for e, gha, ? a, tha, pha, ra and sa, 5 for o, ca, ?ha, da, ba, la and ha.) Divide the total by 12 = Remainder Now, Remainder + Constant additives of that planet ( Surya 5, Candr 2, Mangal 2, Budh 3, Guru 5, Sukr 3, Sani 3, Rahu and Ketu 4.) = Second Total Now divide second total by 3 = Second Remainder For second remainder 1 = Drishti 2 = Chesht 3 = Vichesht In Chesht sub state planet gives full result, In Drishti sub state planet gives half results and no results in third state. Another simple method to calculate these avasthas (The method which I use usuall y) is to use a good Horoscope making software. :))

Avasthas: Shayanadi Avasthas- General Description Avasthas: Shayanadi Avasthas- General Description Besides three types of Dasha Discussed by us in previous posts. There is another types of Avastha. This is called Shayanadi avasthas. These avasthas indicate th e mood of the planet. and which result will it give. Parashara says this type to be most important of all. Parashars discussed these avasthas in very detail. But these avasthas are o ne of the best kept secrets in astrology. And one of the less known types of ava sthas. In coming posts we will discuss these avasthas. The reference is mainly f rom BPHS. Shayanadi Avashathas are of twelve types, 1) Shayan (lying down), 2) Upavesan, (sitting) 3) Netrapani, (Eyes and hands) 4) Prakash, (glowing) 5) Gaman, (On the move/walking) 6) Agaman, (coming) 7) Sabha, (attending an assembly) 8) Agam, (Returning) 9) Bhojan,(Eating) 10) Nritya Lips,(Desirous) 11) Kautuk (Eager) 12) Nidr (Sleeping) There are further sub types of these. 1) Drishti 2) Chesht 3) Vichesht General effects of sayanadi avasthas as told in BPHS. If a benefic Grah is in Sayan, then that benefic planet will give benefid result s in all his dasha and antardasha period. Because at that time planet is lying d own and is in relaxed mood. he is feeling comfortable enough in that house that

he can laydown and rest there. If any malefic planet is in Bhojan avastha, then that planet will destroy every happiness of that house. Bhojan means eating and a planet is eating that house a nd it's significations. When a planet is in 7H in the state of Nidr (sleeping) and is not getting any ma lefic aspect then native will feel auspisious effects related to that house. Thi s is because that planet is sleeping there and is not in mood to harm. Similar e ffects can be described for 5th house But if a malefic is in 8th house in nidr then person will have untimely death du e to punishment from the government. But if that planet is getting aspect from b enefic and/or is in conjunction with benefic then that person will die untimely at sacred places/shrines. Parashara described the place of death as Ganga nadi s pecifically. If moon is in Kautuk or prakash avastha then person will have a great Rajayoga. If a malefic is in 10th house in sayan or bhojan avastha then that person will h ave to face problems due to his own bad deeds of present life any many past live s. These are just general effects of these avasthas as told by Parashara. In coming posts we will discuss how to calculate these avasthas and what are the effects with respect to different planets
