THE WORD IN SCOTLAND

Dear Friends,

The Christinas and New Year's holiday season is much the same in America, with a few small differences. The day after Christmas is

called

Boxing Day

and is just

as big a holiday

as Christmas Day,

New Year's Eve is called Hogmanay and is celebrated in the same way as in America, with all of the same excesses. One big difference is that in Britain it seems as if the entire country closes down for 10

or 12 days. The only stores that stay open during this time are the small Pakistani-run shops. Even the giant department stores down town only open for two or three days between Christmas and New
Year's for after-Christmas sales.

But the Christmas season was certainly not the most joyful one Scotland has seen. The whole country mourned as the Lockerbie air disaster dominated the newspapers, radio, and television headlines.

I recently made a trip to Lockerbie on behalf of International Disaster Emergency Services (I.D.E.S.) to try and contact individ uals in need of physical and spiritual assistance. But until the media, security, and sightseers thin out, the social workers are not going to give us a lot of cooperation. We will continue to follow
this up over the coming weeks.
All of the church's Christmas activities went as planned. The

live nativity was well-received and, in spite of the gloomy, drizzly weather, quite a few people stopped by to take a closer look. We also had a very nice candlelight service with an evangelistic theme.

On January 8th we will see our first baptism in Glasgow, (More details about that next month.) An older lady that I've been study ing with about the Christian faith and who was a candidate for our January 8th baptisms, has fallen and will be in the hospital for
several weeks. (See list of prayer requests.) We praise God for supplying additional workers for the Forres Christian Fellowship! Gary and Javonda Barnes have decided to spend 18 months to two years in Forres helping to strengthen the Body
there and train leaders. The Barnes' will Caudle, present minister of the Forres church. be assisting Robert

And lastly, we want to thank everyone for their nice cards, letters, and gifts over the Christmas season. May God bless you all

Dear Friends,

Praise the Lord for His goodnessi He has answered your faith ful prayers. This month, we*d like to "introduce" you to Graeme
McCaskill. You have seen his name in our list of prayer requests, and he was baptized into Christ on the 8th of January, along with Moira Toal. ttoira was a baptized believer, but had more or less been forced into baptism several years ago when she did not under
stand or desire to make a commitment to the Lord. I have asked

Graeme to write a few words to you, but first, let me fill you in on how we met him. Graeme came early on in our two-week crusade during the summer, and toward the end was even helping us invite others to attend. As a member of the Church of Scotland from childhood, he was somewhat involved in the church with his parents, but told us he

wasn't sure

Graeme and studied

with Him more of God's Word.

Hello therel My name is Graeme McCaskill and I have been asked to write a few paragraphs on my life in Glasgow, on my experiences and on my recent baptism.
Having gained good qualifications at high school, I entered the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow in 1977 and three years later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. At this time I had no
interest in the church or what i t had to teach.

I then began work for a government department in London, England. My brother, Ross, had departed for Australia at this time and I felt a deep emptiness. To fill this void, I dabbled in soft drugs, excessive drinking, and sex. Well, to cut a long story short, I had a nervous breakdown and was ill for about two years.
It was during and after my illness I felt a need for God. I began to read about this person called Jesus and listen to sermons on him. Then one night at a Christian crusade, I went forward and committed my life to the Lord. On the 8th of January, 1989, I had my baptism in Strathclyde Christian Church to affirm what has some times been a shaky and doubting faith in God. So I wish you all the best for the future and leave you with one of my favorite passages
from the Bible:

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life,

neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future nor any powers, neither height

nor depth nor anything else in all creation will

be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord," (Rom. 8:38-39)
God Bless,
Graeme

THE WORD ITi SCOTLAND

Dear Friends,

son.

Here in Scotland, we are continuing to enjoy a mild winter sea The weathermen say it has been the warmest winter for many

years.

Strathclyde Christian

Church is enjoying its

own "warm sea

son"! Though the church is still only about 200 members strong, every last member is becoming more and more enthusiastic about the
Lord and about the work of the church. We have declared March to be

a special month of outreach. Special church services are planned, social evenings, leafleting and calling campaigns, etc. to try and get people into the church.

One lady in the church, a young Christian, has written a little poem about our church which I believe sums up the attitude of every
one involved:

Strathclyde Christian Church

Strathclyde Christian Church Oh what a happy group of people giving love.

They follow on the Savior's steps. They tackle problems there with zest. They are giving us their very best
under the banner of Jesus Christ.

They sing His songs, they tell His works, They give it everything they've got. God gives His blessings on the lot
at Strathclyde Christian Church. by Helen Meighan

We were delighted recently to see the return of Denton and Lisa Fraizer, our fellow workers from the States. Another member of our team here, Steve Welch, will be returning very shortly. We were very concerned at the long delay that the British Consulate created over their visas, but we know that our God is bigger than all the bureau
crats in the world I

We were approached last month by one of the area^s head social workers asking if we could create a club for teenage girls in the local community center. Julie and the other ladies in the church were delighted to accept the offer. Since our friend in the social works department is a Christian and very sympathetic with our church, she has agreed to allow Christian teaching in the curriculum of the girls* club. We praise God for continuing to open doors for His
service.

PRAYER REQUESTS:

1.

Pray for the outreach of Strathclyde Christian Church

in the month of March (and beyond).

2.
3.

Begin praying now for our big summer mission, GO '89.

Any little conflict becomes very obvious in such a small body of believers. Pray for the unity of our
church and i t s staff.

April, 1989 THE WORD m

Dear Friends,

NUMBER 4

SCOTLAWD

Easter Sunday is the most important holiday that the Christian

Church celebrates, because the whole Christian faith rests upon the

truth of Christ's physical resurrection from the dead. By raising Jesus from the grave, God validated all of the miraculous events in
both the Old and New Testaments, as well as the Testaments

themselves. If you are in doubt of this, please read carefully I Corinthians chapter 15. Thus, it saddened all true believers to
see and hear the Easter headlines in Britain, where one of the

highest-ranking clergymen in the Church of England, the Bishop of Durham, David Jenkins, asserted that Christ's resurrection was
SPIRITUAL rather than PHYSICAL. Jenkins said he believes that such

a statement will make Christianity more accessible to the average person. Such teaching is far removed from historical Christianity; it is plain HERESY and should be branded as such.

But perhaps

even sadder than

Jenkins' heretical statement is

the lack of a serious outcry from the State Church, both in England and in Scotland. It appears that Britain is full of religious leaders (let's not call them "Christian" leaders) who, in the same mold of those in Jesus' day, "know not the Scriptures or the Power
of God".

However, the Strathclyde Christian Church met on Easter Sunday to celebrate the literal, physical resurrection of Christ. And what a celebration it was. We met on Sunday morning in a public park to

proclaim to bewildered onlookers that "Jesus is Lord!"

and

"Jesus

is Risen", (If you think planning an outside service in Scotland is risky business, you are right. But we praise God for fine weather 1) There were 31* in attendance and the singing, preaching, and break ing of bread and fellowship were truly an uplifting experience.
Our church was saddened early in March to lose one of our faithful members, 78-year-old William Wallace. Mr. Wallace was very active to the very end, and in fact died at a train station waiting for a train to take him to a church service. Although we only knew Mr. Wallace for a year, he was an inspiration to us as a tireless Christian encourager.

March was a month with an emphasis on outreach. The most exciting thing to me is a weekly calling program I began with the church members. At first, they were a little hesitant, but now everyone involved is loving it, and we have had a regular stream of
visitors to the church as a result. concerning this. Thank you for all your prayers

We are getting all excited here about our big summer program, GO '89. The dates are June 26-July 24. If you would like to come help us during this time, spaces are still available and we would
be glad to send you information!
In Christ,
Scott & Julie

PRAYER REQUESTS:

1.

Our team leader, Sam Burton, is due back in Scotland

March 31.

Pray that our team will

continue to be a strong

influence for

the growth of the church here.

2.

Two couples on our ministry team are expecting children soon (the Fraziers and the Gibsons). Pray for safety for the expect
ant mothers and their children.

*(Ed. note: last month's newsletter contained a printing error: the

THE WORD m
Dear Friends,

SCOTLAND

Every year in Scotland, it seems like we get one month where the weather is pretty nice. April may have been that month for us this year. We had plenty of sunshine, not too much rain, and the temperatures, although a little brisk, were pleasant enough. Spring
fever is in the air!

The

school kids

get a

two-week

break

during April,

so we

decided

to capitalize

and have two weeks' worth

of Holiday Bible

Club (VBS). Attendances were down a little due to so many people using this time to take a vacation, but we had a great time anyway. Best of all, we got some of our church members involved in teaching and puppets and other odd jobs. Those who participated had as good
a time as did the kids themselves.

A few of the men have agreed to get involved in some corres pondence courses. We will be using material from a group called the Bible Training Institute, which is a Scottish based group who specialize in training men for the ministry. Of course I will be supervising this program very closely, and supplementing the courses with my own curriculum. There are two reasons why I have

chosen to use the Bible Training Institute's courses. First of all,

they are one of the few groups around Britain who are conservative in their teaching and who have a high regard for the Scriptures. Secondly, at least one of the men can probably use the certifica tion from a recognized local institution to teach Bible in his line of work. I will be keeping you posted on how this sort of training
progresses.

Several years ago, the Church of England published an official statement declaring that they believed Freemasonry is not compatible with Christianity. The Church of Scotland is now moving rapidly toward making the same sort of official statement. In fact, one of the men in our church, after months of praying and studying
the Bible and all sorts of Masonic literature,
sion that he could not be a committed Christian

came to the conclu

and a Mason at the

same time,

so he

made his choice

and left the Masons.

It never

ceases to amaze me that, although a church as liberal and messed up as the Church of England can take a stand against unrighteousness, so many conservative Christian churches are willing to turn a blind eye to it. Such cowardice is just beyond my comprehension.

I would like to personally clear up any confusion created by a little typographical error that slipped by a few months ago in our
newsletter. Strathclyde Christian Church does not have 200 members I would like to thank all

(yet). That number should have read 20 (twenty). However, since that was published, we have grown to about 30, and we have even had
some attendances in excess of 40 people.

On April 16, Lisa Fraizer gave birth to little Luke Denton.

THE WORD m
Dear Friends,

SCOTLAND

After

over

three years

on the mission field,

Julie

and

definitely do

not

feel as

though

we've

been forgotten

by

our

friends back in the U.S.A. Every month we continue to receive cards and letters giving us words of encouragement and news from

back home, as well as

some very thoughtful gifts.

We can't thank

you all enough for keeping in touch; it means a great deal to us.

We are now well into the "allergy season" over here.

Whereas

Julie is not affected by the pollen in the air, I seem to be extra sensitive to it. One of the worst culprits for triggering hay fever over here is a plant called rapeseed. While driving along the road, the fields of rape are unmistakable, being a very brilliant (almost

fluorescent) yellow.

It's very pleasant to look at, but puts off an

incredible amount of pollen. I believe they use the seed to produce cooking oil.

We have had two more baptisms in the month of May; a young man named Andrew and a lady named Carolyn. In his nineteen years of life, Andrew has tried just about all the world has to offer, with out finding satisfaction. When we met him he was desperately searching for some meaning and stability in life and he was only too glad to admit failure and decide to follow Jesus. Carolyn, on the other hand, grew up in the Church of Scotland. Years ago, through an earnest search of the Scriptures, she saw plainly that she was to follow Christ in baptism. When she approached her church leaders, they refused to baptize her because she had been sprinkled as an infant. Eventually, she left the parish church because she felt they had very little to offer her spiritually. She came to us already believing all of the facts in the Bible, hoping we could help her live a life of obedience to the Lord. Needless to say, we are delighted to have her as part of our fellowship.

We are also very happy to say that our co-workers Oerry and Kelly Gibson are now the proud parents of a little boy, ^urby Isaiah. Curby was born in the wee hours of the morning of May 27. In the space of two months our small church has seen the births of three wonderful childrenall of them boysl We look forward to seeing Johnny, Luke, and Curby grow up to become great men of God.

GO '89, our summer crusade, is shaping up nicely, although we have seen a few very unusual complications. Two of the facilities we were going to use in our program have become unavailable to us. One of them is shutting down for good and the other is being torn to the ground before summer. Neither facility bothered to contact

us and we only found out about both of them by accident,

I'm sure

God will provide alternative facilities, and in the meantime these are some of the little quirks that keep life interesting!

PRAYER REQUESTS:

1.
2.

Pray that

GO '89 will be a great event,

for the glory of God.

Pray for the men in our congregation who are unemployed. Jobs in Scotland can be very hard to find, and wages are so low for the unskilled worker that there is a strong temptation to remain on government unemplo3mient benefits. Pray that we may be a strong spiritual force for the many children we come into contact with as a result of our Sunday
School and various children's clubs and activities.

3.

In Christ,
Scott & Julie

NUMBER 7

Dear Friends,

We've been waiting to write to you until GO '89 was well under
way so that we could report on its progress so far. There are

about 15 summer workers here from che U.S., not including guest speakers. One of these speakers, and our personal guest, was Glenn
Liston from my home church in Owasso, Oklahoma. Thanks to both

Glenn and Shirley for a job well done, and to the elders and congregation at Owasso for being able to spare them on our behalf.

Also we have enjoyed

hearing from

Ben Alexander who has been

bringing

some very pertinent

messages.

As a former spiritualist

medium from London, Ben is helping us to tackle one of Britain's biggest spiritual problems. Since his conversion, Ben and his wife, Miranda, have formed E.S.P. Ministries (Exposing Satan's Power) and have been travelling mainly in the United States warning of the
dangers of the occult. Over 30 first-time visitors have attended

Ben's lectures

over just

two nights.

(Sadly enough, more people

seem to be interested in hearing about Satan than Jesus Christ.)

Some of you

may already know that Julie and I have decided to

V/ / \

return to the States. We believe we have accomplished the task for which we were sent and can assure you that this decision has been
arrived at with much prayerful consideration. We're feeling the strain of mixed emotions as we prepare to leave the friends we've made and the churches we've helped to establish. Please continue to pray for us as we wrap up our work on the field and leave it in the hands of other missionaries and nationals. (Our plans are to leave mid-August and to travel to supporting churches to report of

'

our work over the past 3 1/2 years.) We hope to get to visit with many of you personally to thank you for your whole-hearted support of us and our ministry. Thank you sincerely for providing us with this priceless opportunity to serve our Lord on a foreign field.

PRAYER REQUESTS:

There have been several people attend the Ben Alexander meetings who are involved in Spiritualism. Others have come simply out of curiosity. Some have expressed a genuine interest in comparing Biblical Christianity with their experiences. Please pray for

LATE NEWS

FROM THE FIELD:

In a phone call Sunday from Glasgow, Sciott & Julie excitedly reported that four people were baptized that day: Anne (prayer request #2 above); Mrs. Johnston (for whom they had asked our prayer in an earlier newsletter); and two people who had come to the GO '89 crusade: Jackie and Roy. THE WORD m
Dear Friends,

SCOTLAND

You may be wondering, "Why another newsletter?" Well, first of all, during our travels, we promised many of you an "update" whenever we had final plans as to where we would be relocating. I*m happy to
announce that as of December 1st, we will be working in Phoenix,

Ar.-i^orxa, with Christ's Church of the Valley, under Dr. Donald Wilson.

We

will be

participating in a

912

month internship (unpaid) with

Christ's Church, and then we will be sent out by the Arizona Evangel

izing Association of Christian Churches/Churches of Christ to plant a new congregation in the great Southwest United States. Words can hardly describe how excited we are about starting out on this new adventure. Several of you have asked us if we would continue to need

support during this

internship period.

The answer is "yes," and if

you are interested, you may send your contributions to us through:

First Christian Church
ATTN; Missions Committee

12200 E. 86th Street, N. Owasso, OK 74055

Be sure to enclose a note stating who the check is for.

During our stay in financially speaking,

Scotland, we were always well taken care of, by you, our faithful supporters. I would

encourage every individual and committee who reads this letter to (if
you have not already done so) put the money you have been using to support us back into your nlsslons prograws, Tf yon have not already found a worthy missionary candidate, may I be so bold as to suggest
one? Robert Caudle has served very selflessly in Scotland for about

four years. Much of that time has been spent nurturing the young congregation in Forres. Robert is a single man and thus has abundant
time to dedicate to service; but because he is single, many churches have been reluctant to support him. Robert is conservative in doc

trine,

unimpeachable in character,

and single-mindedly dedicated to

the task set before him.

If you are familiar with the Apostle Paul's

teaching on the subject of single servants, you will agree with me that it would be good stewardship to support Robert. For information

regarding supporting his ministry, contact Robert's forwarding agent:

Often I'm asked to relate some of the valuable lessons we learned

while in Scotland. First of all, we learned that in order for a per son to be useful to God, attitudes of the heart such as availability,

humility and

servanthood

are much more important than intelligence,

wit, and even natural ability. God wants to use every Christian in service, but the Christian must first be willing to be used. Second

ly, we've seen that no matter how well laid the plans we make are, we must always be prepared to be flexible. God would have us all aggres sively work for his plan without running ahead of Him. That is easier said than done. Thirdly, we've learned that God is very serious when He tells us not to worry or be anxious because He will provide for us. Waiting for God to provide can be suspenseful, even frustrating, at times, but as Christians we should learn to find it exciting and fun. I wish we could sit down with each of you and tell you some of the specific instances God has used to teach us in Scotland.
If we could make one final request of you, it would be that you would continue to pray oi the" work in ScoLland.
