AT KASLO
VICTORIAN HOSPITAL
The Interior Health Authoritys decision to reduce emergency
services to Kaslo will only result in hardship to the members of that
community, and those members who live in outlying communities
which are serviced by Kaslo.
Contrary to The Ministry of Healths strategic goal #3, which
speaks to accessibility of timely, safe, and appropriate hospital
services that support the needs of the patients and their families,
the IHAs decision to reduce services at the Victorian Hospital in
Kaslo will do exactly the opposite.
Losing the emergency services in Kaslo will reduce the ability to
triage and stabilize patients with medical emergencies. The loss of
these services will result in patients having to travel to Nelson, by
either private vehicle or the provincial ambulance service. Those
patients may then require more critical intervention and the delay
in providing service may result in increased complications and
deaths.
In light of the negative impact to our families and communities, I
urge the IHA to look at all models of care, including the use of
Nurse Practitioners, promotion of Nurse First Call and Remote
Nursing Practice Certication for RNs, in order to maintain 24/7
services in Kaslo.

Rumour has it that the Kootenay area now has more quali-
fed dog trainers per capita than anywhere else in Canada!
No, problem, says Jeanne Shaw of Love 2 Play Dog Train-
ing. We all work together and consult with one another. We
are excited to welcome these new, and more importantly,
qualifed trainers!
Seven local people recently completed the Karen Pryor
Academy for Animal Training and Behaviour program host-
ed by Love 2 Play Dog Training. Tis program requires six
months of learning, training not only ones own dog but also
a second species (fsh, cat, goat, sheep, horse, bird, etc.). In
order to graduate a grade of at least 90% is required on every
assignment! Graduates include Julia Hamilton (Nelson),
Gundula Brigl (Nelson), Robin Maclean (Grand Forks),
Sarah Fulcher (Trail), and Frankie Smith (Trail). Hamilton
and Fulcher will be assisting Shaw (herself a KPA grad) at
Love 2 Play Dog Training. Fulcher is the owner of Barks and
Recreation in Trail, where she is assisted by Smith who also
works at the Trail Regional BC-SPCA.
Love 2 Play is looking forward to hosting the 6 month pro-
gram again next summer! Information is available at www.

primarily with other species in the wild or in zoological/
aquarium settings.

Te Nelson Public Library has joined the campaign,
celebrating the joy of reading by ofering everyone twenty
minutes of uninterrupted reading time. Joining ranks
with teacher-librarians across BC to kick of School Li-
brary Week 2013, the library hopes to fll its space with
people reading. including librarians.
Te best example is a personal one, says chief librar-
ian June Stockdale. So our staf will drop everything and
read as well. Members needing help during that time will
be encouraged to pick up a book or a newspaper or even
an eReader at least until 11:20.

New law turns shacked-up lovers into married
couples and 'Room-mates with benefts watch
out! trumpeted headlines when BCs Family
Law Act came into force March 18, 2013.
These days, many more couples choose to live
together for the long term than get married.
The need to better deal with this new reality,
and the fallout when some of these common-
law relationships inevitably end, is one reason
for the new law.
Also, family law disputes often took up heaps
of court time. The new law recognizes that the
bitter Ill see you in court! approach is often
not the best way to go.
If you have children, its particularly impor-
tant that you have a civil relationship with
your ex-partner long after you separate. The
new law refects that it may be better to try
to work through family break-up issues. It
encourages mediation, getting the help of a
parenting co-ordinator and negotiated agree-
ments instead of going to court.
But the biggest change and the one that
prompted the dramatic headlines has to do
with the splitting of assets and debts after a
break-up.
Before, if you lived in a marriage-like rela-
tionship for two years or more, you could
ask Ior fnancial support aIter a break-up.
But when it came to property like the fam-
ily home, the situation was different. Married
couples generally got one-half of the family
assets, no matter which spouse owned them
(though the court could order a different
split). Common- law partners, though, even
iI they contributed to the relationship fnan-
cially or by looking after the children, faced
an uphill court battle to try and get a share in
property owned by the other.
Now, if youve been living common-law for
two or more years, the law treats you the
same as a married person for dividing up your
property and debts. Family property is now
divided equally, unless that would be signif-
cantly unfair. You have up to two years after
breaking up to make a claim.
But for both married and common-law cou-
ples, the new law excludes certain property
from being split equally. Basically, you get to
keep whats yours if you owned the property
beforehand. Also, a gift or inheritance (or
things bought with that money), or insurance
money or personal injury compensation spe-
cifc to you, that you got during the relation-
ship generally stays with you and isnt carved
up between you and your ex-partner only
its increase in value during the relationship
is shared.
If you dont want the new laws property rules
to apply, you can agree with your partner to
opt out (by a written agreement) and divide
your property and debts as you see ft upon
a break-up.
It may make a lot of sense, well before the
two-year common-law milestone is reached,
to fgure out iI you share similar long-term
goals and how you want to split your assets
and debts in case you separate.
The new law deals with many other things
like giving notice if you want to move with
your kids, parenting arrangements, family law
protective orders and more. Seek good legal
help if you need assistance with how the new
rules apply to you or if your live-in love rela-
tionship sours.

Te River And Te Road
Singer/guitarist Andrew Phelan made his way to Chica-
go with the looming need to cross into Canada for work.
He had two fight choices, Montreal or Vancouver, and
fying west was cheaper. Once there, he met singer/banjo
player Keenan Lawlor, who had been playing around Van-
couver for the previous eight months.
Afer several months as a duo, and experimentation with
additional instrumentation, they recorded their debut
eponymous twelve-track album. In the spring of 2012, the
band emerged as a dynamic four-piece with the addition
of bassist John Hayes and drummer Cole George.
In their short history as a band, Te River and Te Road
has blossomed into an internationally touring quartet.
Winter 2013 saw the boys working to stitch their name
into the musical fabric of Australia, most notably in Syd-
ney and Melbourne.
Tenacity, heart, and above all else, a gripping live per-
formance, the band has no plans of slowing down. A
spirited folk form of sincere storytelling, mixed with
strong harmonies, heavy percussion breakdowns, and
dynamic arrangements embodies the sound of Te River
and Te Road.

New Ambulance Station
Unveiled By Riondel Paramedics
Local paramedics and members of the local community
will celebrate a bigger and better BC Ambulance Service
(BCAS) station that will help improve pre-hospital patient
care in Riondel at a ceremony on Saturday.
Having a safe, secure and comfortable station is greatly
appreciated by our crew. Te space suits our professional
needs and this winter I know well all appreciate having our
ambulance inside a vehicle bay. Te crew quarters, storage
and training area all support our provision of ef cient and
efective pre-hospital patient care to our community, said
Unit Chief Cynthia Bonnell.
Te 1,400 square foot station is a modular structure
which serves as the crew quarters and includes the pur-
pose-built stick-framed vehicle bay. Previously, the crew
quarters and vehicle bay were located separately with the
ambulance stationed at the community centre and the
crew in a residential building.
We have had such amazing support from our commun-
ity, ambulance auxiliary and emergency services and med-
ical partners, Bonnell said. We share this station open-
ing with all our community partners and our friends and
neighbours of Riondel.
Te new crew quarters includes rest areas, a kitchen, an
of ce, bathrooms, storage space and a training area.
Riondel is home to approximately 400 permanent
residents. Te BCAS Riondel Station was established in
1971 and serves the residents of Kooteney and Crawford
Bay, Gray Creek, Boswell and surrounding areas. Te sta-
tion employs four paramedics and works closely with the
Riondel Volunteer Fire Department, RCMP, Crawford
Bay Medical Clinic and BC Ferries to provide consistent
pre-hospital patient care throughout the community. Last
year, Riondel paramedics responded to 95 calls, 89 of
which required an emergency lights and siren response.
BCAS operates under the authority of BC Emergency
Health Services (BCEHS) to provide residents and health-
care professionals with access to pre-hospital emergency
and patient transfer services. BCEHS also oversees the Pa-
tient Transfer Network and Trauma Services BC.
The Village of Kaslo will be picking up organic yard
and garden trimmings only, free of charge, in an
effort to help our residents tidy up yards and
adjacent boulevards on:
Tuesday, October 29 for lower Kaslo, and south of Kaslo River
Wednesday, October 30 for upper Kaslo, and Kaslo Bay area.
Please make a note on your calendar.
A few things to keep in mind are:
Absolutely no garbage mixed in with garden trimmings
- anything other than organics will NOT be picked up;
leaves, dead plants and grass trimmings must be bagged in
compostable bags available for purchase in quantity at
local retail outlets; small branches must be cut to lengths
less than 6 feet and bundled.
Ensure adequate access for equipment.
Everything must be ready for pick-up from your boulevard
or lane by 7am on the appointed day for your area.

healthy by the water, and tourism.
