Physical and Chemical Changes

An unexpected change in state is evidence of what? o A chemical change A pair of scissors were left outside and rusted. What evidence shows that a chemical reaction has taken place? A. They have turned orange. B. They are dirty. C. The sun has warmed them. D. They are hard to use. For my Halloween party, I made a snack mix with pretzels, M&Ms, marshmallows, and Chex. What kind of change is this an example of? A physical change How are fireworks examples of chemical reactions? They change color and require energy. During science, Kelsey and Jake added water to a teaspoon of powdery substance that was in a Ziploc bag. The substance expanded and now fills up half of a Ziploc bag. Kelsey says that this is a chemical change and Jake says this is a physical change. Who is right? Provide clues and evidence to back up your answer. Physical. No new substance is created. The powdery substance absorbed the water and thus expanded, if allowed to sit in the air, the water would eventually evaporate, leaving the powdery substance.

States of Matter

I have a mystery matter. The volume always stays the same but it can take the shape of a cup, a bowl, a box, or whatever container it is put into. What state is it in? Liquid How do you know when something is solid? A. It will pour. B. It cannot be seen easily. C. It takes the shape of its container. D. It will hold its shape by itself. Water vapor (steam) is an example of a: A. Gas B. Liquid C. Solid D. Mass An example of a solid changing to a liquid is: A. Water being poured into a glass B. Water being put in a freezer C. Ice cubes melting D. Clouds forming 8 grams of baking soda and 30 grams of vinegar are added together. A bubbling reaction starts. When it is over, the solution weighs 35 grams instead of 38 grams. Why has the weight changed? A gas has formed and left the mixture.

Conservation of Mass

A house made of toy blocks is weighed. It is taken apart and each block is weighed separately. If the weight of all the blocks is added, what will it total? The same as the house. Water is boiled in a flask with a balloon over the top. As the water heats, the balloon expands. What has happened to the weight of this flask and the balloon in this experiment? It has stayed the same. Ashley and Tyler were each given a ball of clay of the same weight. Both students used all their clay to make an object. Ashley rolled hers into a ball; Tyler made his into a long, skinny rope. What is the weight of the clay figures now? The objects would both still weigh the same. 5 grams of salt is dissolved into 100 mL of water to form a salt water solution. If the solution is heated and the water is boiled away, or the water just evaporates, how much salt would you have left in the container? 5 grams Kaden measures 25 grams of juice into a Popsicle mold and then freezes it. The next day, he takes the frozen Popsicle mold out of the freezer and notices that the Popsicle is larger than before. What will the Popsicle weigh? 25 grams (the same as before)

Vocabulary

I am anything that has mass and takes up space. I am all the stuff in the Universe. What am I? Matter This form of matter is invisible (most of the time) and spreads out to fill up the container it is in. What is it? Gas I am something about matter that can be observed with one or more senses and tells what the matter is like. I help describe and sort matter? What am I? Property (Physical Property) This occurs when substance is made into new substance and has different properties. What is it? Chemical Change This occurs when the form of matter is not changed and one substance is NOT made into a new substance. What is it?

Physical Change

Challenge Questions

Tell why burning a piece of wood is a chemical reaction: Heat is involved (wood is burned) A new substance is formed (ash)

Name at least 3 differences between a physical change and a chemical change: Physical Change: change in size, change in shape, substance stays the same Chemical Change: gas is given off, energy (light) is given off, a different substance is formed Which of the following is NOT a physical property of matter? A. Phase (solid, liquid, gas) B. Shape C. Hardness D. Flammability Study the chart and answer the questions below. Time Passed 0 minutes 1 minute 2 minutes 3 minutes 4 minutes Sallys Observations Candle is lit, black smoke rises Flame glows red and orange Wax starts to melt and run down candle Candle is shorter than before Hot gases are rising above candle

Which observations show that a burning candle is a chemical reaction?

A. The candle is made of wax. B. The candle smells nice. C. Black smoke rises, hot gases are given off

Which observations show that physical changes are involved?

A. Time has passed. B. The wax starts to melt. c. Black smoke rises, hot gases are given off.

Which substance had a chemical change? Which had a physical change?

Testing four substances collected the following data. Each was tested to see if it floated in water, burned when lit with a flame, or melted when heated.
Floated in Water Yes No Yes No Burned when Lit Yes No No No D Melted when Heated Yes No No Yes
