DYWIDAG DUCTILE CONNECTOR
DYWIDAG SYSTEMS INTERNATIONAL, USA, INC.

LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA 90805
1.0 SUBJECT
Dywidag Ductile Connector.
2.0 DESCRIPTION
2.1 General:
The Dywidag Ductile Connector is a system permitting
connection of precast concrete elements to form a special
moment resisting space frame as defined in Section 1627 of
the 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC), with R
w
equal to 12.
2.2 Materials:
2.2.1 Ductile Connector: The ductile connector is formed
from AISI C 1045 steel with a minimum yield strength of 60
ksi (413.7 MPa) and a minimum tensile strength of 75 ksi
(517.1 MPa). The components are 15 inches (381 mm) long
with a 3-inch-long-by-1
1
/
2
-inch-diameter (76 mm by 38 mm)
threaded portion to receive 1
1
/
2
-inch-diameter (38 mm) high-
strength bolts. The headed portion is 6 inches (152 mm) in
diameter by 1 inch (25 mm) thick. The shank of the connector
is 1
3
/
4
inches (45 mm) in diameter.
2.2.2 Bolts: The high-strength steel bolts comply with ASTM
A 490 and measure 1
1
/
2
inches (38 mm) in diameter and 7
1
/
4
inches (164 mm) long with a 2
3
/
8
-inch (60 mm) hexhead.
2.2.3 Connector Plate: Connector plate is 4-inch-thick (102
mm) hot-rolled ASTM A 36 or AISI C 1045 structural steel,
with the condition of F
y
= 50 ksi (345 MPa) minimum.
2.2.4 Tie Rod: The tie rod is a 1-inch-diameter (25 mm) hot-
rolled round bar complying with the ASTM A 36.
2.2.5 Washer: The washer is a standard hardened steel,
circular for a 1
1
/
2
-inch-diameter (38 mm) bolt, complying with
ASTM F 436, at least three washers are required for each
bolt.
2.2.6 Thread Bar: The thread bar is 1
3
/
8
-inch-diameter (35
mm) deformed steel complying with ASTM A 722.
2.3 Design:
Structural design is in accordance with the Dywidag Ductile
Connector design guide dated October 1995.
2.4 Installation:
The Dywidag Ductile Connector system is designed to be
used with normal-weight structural concrete columns with a
minimum compressive strength of 5,000 psi (34.5 MPa) and
a maximum
3
/
4
-inch (19 mm) aggregate size. Beams are
constructed from the same concrete materials. The number
of ductile connectors is determined by design. The column
ties are designed and placed to transfer the ductile connector
forces through the joint. The concrete precast column is cast
to permit the threaded portion of the ductile connector to be
flush with the column surface. Beams are prepared by
threading the thread bars into the connecting plate and
casting the concrete beam with the connector plate at the end
of the beam. A pocket to facilitate bolt tightening is left
between the connector plate and the top of the beam. The
column is then set in place. The beams can be framed into
one or two opposing sides of the column. Shim plates
measuring 5 inches (127 mm) in diameter by
1
/
4
inch (6.4 mm)
thick are placed over bolt ends between the beam and the
column. High-strength bolts are then inserted through the
connector plate, threaded into the receiving portion of the
ductile connector and tensioned in accordance with the
design requirements. The pocket is then filled with either
concrete or grout. Typical details are in Figures 1 and 2.
2.5 Special Inspection:
Precast concrete members are produced by an approved
fabricator possessing a current evaluation report. Jobsite
assembly requires special inspection according to Section
1701.5.1 and Section 1701.5.6 of the UBC. The special
inspector must verify precast member identification, member
erection, connections, high-strength bolting and grouting.
2.6 Identification:
The material packages are labeled with the Dywidag Systems
International, USA, Inc., name and address, part code, and
name of the inspection agency (Professional Service
Industries). The precast concrete elements are identified in
accordance with the fabricators evaluation report.
3.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED
Data in accordance with the Acceptance Criteria for Ductile
Connectors in Precast Concrete Special Moment Resisting
Frames (AC41), dated January 1995.
4.0 FINDINGS
That the Dywidag Ductile Connector complies with the
1997 Uniform Building Code, subject to the following
conditions:
