EXTRA CREDIT: LINEAGE RESEARCH

Due: Point Value: Instructions: September 13, 2012 2 points The purpose of this extra credit opportunity is to show you the types of documents used by historians, and for you to conduct your own historical research. In this case, using ancestry.com (note the free two week trial that conveniently aligns with this assignment) to trace your lineage back to a great-great-grandparent. Find the name, birth place, and occupation of your great-great-grandparent. Fill out the blank family tree provided below. See page two for an example family treecreated using census data found through name searches on ancestry.com.

Requirements:

Tips:

Begin by conducting a search for a grandparent, using their name, date of birth, and place of birth. When you locate a grandparent in the census, you will also see the information for their parents (your great-grandparents). Write that information down, then do a new search for your great-grandparent. Repeat. I will demonstrate how to conduct this type of research on ancestry.com during class on September 6, 2012.

NOTE:

There will be future extra credit opportunities to conduct research and see different types of historical sources. No one will miss out on the chance for extra credit because few records exist for their family, or limited access to international documents.

EXAMPLE:
All information found by using name search and census records on ancestry.com
