63B34G01 Suppl 1a PRACTICAL EXERCISE COURSE (S): Wheel Vehicle Mechanic (BNCOC) SUBJECT: Basic Recovery and Rigging

Techniques

INTRODUCTION: During this lesson, the method to determine mechanical advantage has been discussed. This practical exercise will give you a chance to practice your ability to compute mechanical advantage. Remember that, without the proper use of mechanical advantage, it would be impossible to perform the recovery operation. RIGGING FORMULA SHORT LOAD RESISTANCE (LR) = VW + OR - CGO * MF - RF MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE (MA) = LR WC TACKLE RESISTANCE (TR) = 10% OF LR * number of sheaves (1 less than MA for word problems only) TOTAL RESISTANCE (TOLR) = TR + LR FALL LINE FORCE (FLF) = TOLR MA DEAD LINE FORCE = FLF * most winch lines which are supported by a dead line. WINCH CAPACITY (WC) = given

RIGGING FORMULA LONG LOAD RESISTANCE (LR) = Vehicle weight plus the cargo weight, times the mire factor, minus the reduction factor. Load resistance divided by winch capacity . Round up to the nearest whole number. 10 % of the load resistance times the number of sheaves in the tackle system. The number of sheaves is always one less than the mechanical advantage. Load resistance plus tackle resistance. Total load resistance divided by the mechanical advantage; must be less than the winch capacity. Fall line force times number of most winch lines which are supported by a deadline. Given
