Mining is a primary industry that involves the extraction of solid and semi-solid mineral deposits from the earth that hold economic value. In 1859, gold was discovered in British Columbia and the Gold Rush began two years later, bringing development and people into the region. Presently mines are found across Canada supporting local communities and the abundance of Canadian resource opportunities continues to attract foreign investment and development. In 2011, the mining industry made up of 22.8% of all Canadian exports and contributed $35.6 billion to Canadas gross domestic product (GDP). In this assignment, you will create a report on the distribution of a mined non-renewable resource of your choice in Canada .Using ArcGIS Online you will investigate the human and physical characteristics of the area(s) where the resource is located. Learning Outcomes By completing this assignment, you will be able to: 1. Use GIS to identify where mines are located in Canada 2. Understand the human and physical characteristics of the area where your selected mined resource is located 3. Describe how landforms influence cultural and economic activities in Canada. 4. Find appropriate data to create a map for a specific purpose 5. Determine and select map layer content that is required for a specific inquiry 6. Interpret and analyze a GIS generated map. Skills By completing this assignment, you will become comfortable with the following GIS skills: 1. 2. 3. 4.
