Andre Kertesz - Chez Mondrian Andre Kertesz - Piet Mondrian Piet Mondrian - Composition with Red, Yellow and

Blue J.J.P. Oud - Schrder House

Context: Piet Mondrian was an artist from the early 19th century. Co-founded the DeStijl movement with Theo Van Doesberg. DeStijl were interested with the primary colours, form, line and shape. Their main emphasis were block colours, straight lines and right angles. The movement consisted of painters, sculptors, architects and designers. The artists in the movement did not collaborate directly with each other, but rather responded to each others works with inuenced works of their own. Mondrians most famous piece is Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue The groups main work were created between 1917 and 1928.

Photograph: Andre Kertesz was invited to photograph Mondrian in his home. He wanted to capture the essence of the painters work in the photographs of his home. The owers in the vase are articial, painted by Mondrian in the primary colour scheme to match that of his studio. These aid in representing Mondrians work as they will never die like his paintings. The vase also creates a sense of tension in the scene as it has been placed near the edge of the table and may fall off. The scene isolates the single object on the table, emphasizing the focus upon it. The large open door, with bold vertical lines forming a rectangle, and the table edge, bold horizontal lines, are representative of Mondrians most famous work Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue The door mat signies Mondrians desire to wipe clean the effects of the outside in order to focus clearly and comfortably. The left side of the door frame cuts the image in two, with his warm homely space on the left, lit by a high window in the right hand wall, contrasted with cold bare stone and the outside light. Simple styled scene like his paintings. Self portrait of Mondrian, as it encompasses his home life displayed in the style of his panted work. This can also be seen as the hat and the coat on the hanger create an illusion resembling a person standing in the scene, as though Mondrian is there in the photograph. The photograph was taken later in Mondrians life and his career had gave him high standing, this has been represented by the use of space in the scene showing the house to be large and spacious. Line and angle have been prominent aspects of most photographs by Andre Kertesz.
