According to WHO countries
in Africa where son preference
is most apparent are Algeria,
Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia,
Cameroon, Liberia, Senegal and
Madagascar. Oppressive patri-
archy and male dominance in
all African societies mean that
in all countries, there is some
form of son preference and dis-
crimination against girls.

and to women. Sons are preferred
in order to perpetuate the family
name while a girl loses her iden-
tity with marriage. The responsi-
bility for the care of aging parents
often falls to sons who also per-
form their parents’ burial rites.
Thus not having a son is a source
of vulnerability for parents while
having daughters only is a social
stigma.
The effects of son preference
ripple into other spheres such as
nutrition and education. In the
traditional African homes sons
would be given better food than
daughters and are more likely
to be enrolled in schools and
encouraged to finish. When funds
are short, a girl is likely to be
withdrawn from schools so as to
make allowance for a son to be
educated irrespective of whether
the girl is naturally intelligent
and the son is dull.
Son preference reinforces a
girl’s low self worth, low self-
esteem, depression and eventual
low productivity in adulthood.
Lip Plate
Girls and women in parts of
Ethiopia wear lip plates for
protection and marriageability.
When a young Mursi girl reach-
a mushy ball of potato chips.

manufacturers, and they sent a
courier. Finally, we opened the
packet and it was a mushy ball
of potato chips which emanated
a rotten smell. In return for
all the inconvenience and a
over-active imagination, Simba
apologized for the poor qual-
ity. “Your complaint has been
brought to the attention of the
manager concerned, who will
take corrective action to ensure
that further incidents of this
nature are avoided,” said Elize
Oelofsen, Consumer Services
in an apology letter. Our reader

north of Mago Park in the Omo
River region of South-Western
Ethiopia.
Ritual Flogging
The Hamer of Ethiopia are
known for three reasons. They
make beautiful pottery, high
quality honey and they flog their
women. The women submit to
the ritual floggings proudly and
love to show the deep scars that
are regarded as a proof of devo-
tion to their husbands.

OFFICE BURGLED
T he Community News office
was burgled on 4 March.
Nothing substantial was stolen, but
our offices were trashed. The con-
tents of our desks, shelves and work
bags, including our refuse bin were
emptied onto the floor. When our
alarm finally activated the thieves
ran off leaving their screwdriver
(used to lift up the aluminum win-
dows), sun hat and bag behind.
Thankfully, our computers that were
ready for flight, was left undam-
aged. Now, the Community News,
sports the state of the art sensory
alarm technology and wrap around
electric security fences. An option
we were initially averse to. There
is good news, when the thieves
tried to sell our licence software
to a second-hand shop, the shop-

Dramatic increase in
Islamophobia in the
Netherlands
Islamophobia is gaining
ground in the Netherlands,
with Muslim minorities fac-
ing rising violence and dis-
crimination, a pan-European
anti-racism commission said
in a report released earlier this
month.
The European Commission 40th Independence
against Racism and Intolerance Anniversary
(ECRI) found Islamophobia in
the country to have “increased
dramatically” since 2000,
reporting that Muslims were
“disproportionately targeted”
by security policies and faced
racist violence and discrim-
ination. Tensions have been
fuelled by national and inter-
national events, such as the
September 11 2001 attacks in
the United States and the mur-
der of outspoken columnist
and filmmaker Theo van Gogh
by a radical Muslim in 2004,
the report said.
“The tone of Dutch political
and public debate around inte-
gration and other issues rel-
evant to ethnic minorities has
experienced a dramatic dete-
rioration,” it said, warning of a
“worrying polarisation between
majority and minority commu-
nities. ”It found that the coun-
try’s Muslims - a community
of one million people, or six
percent of the population - had
faced “stereotyping, stigmatis-
ing”, “outright racist political
discourse” and “biased media
portrayal”.

Mercy Senahe was nine years old
when her parents handed her over
to the Avakpe shrine, about 30km
(19 miles) from her family home
in Ho, the capital of Ghana’s
Volta Region. Her grandmother
had been blamed for the theft
of a trokosi woman’s gold ear-
ring. After that, Mercy recalls that
members of her family started
falling ill and dying.
“Nothing was said to me before
I was taken to the shrine. Beads
were placed around my knees and
ankles and then my family left. I
started weeping when I realised
that I’d been given to the priest.
I cried until some of the women,
also trokosis, came to tell me I
could not go back, that they’d
been there for many years.”
Mercy says there were about 60
women and girls in the shrine.
As time went on, more children
began to arrive. “The priest
was about 50 years old. If we
refused to do the work he gave
us - chopping wood, working
in the fields, preparing food -
he would beat us…”
Workload On
Women And Girls
In almost all of African homes,
household chores and care-giv-
ing fall almost exclusively on the
shoulders of daughters and their
mothers. Hardly do sons partici-
pate equally in domestic work.
Girls take on household and care
giving tasks in addition to or
instead of going to school.
Forced Feeding
Young girls are fed by force
to make them gain weight,
and obese to be attractive to
husbands who consider this
as beauty. The health conse-
quences include hypertension,
malformation of the bones and
diabetes. (Mauritania, Niger,
Nigeria, Mali). In some com-
munities, relatives, to make
women who have newly given
birth, gain weight and “be
healthy” feed her forcibly.
Virginity Testing
In order to present a woman
as a virgin on her wedding day,
she is subjected to pressure and
put under control by her fam-
ily in obedience to the norms
of the society. However a man
is free and never made to be
tested for virginity.
Widowhood And
Wife Inheritance
At the death of a husband
accusing fingers are pointed
at the widow suspecting her
of being the cause of death
directly or indirectly. She is
compelled to undergo certain
rites some of which could be
very harsh and dehumanizing.
Besides, at end of the rituals
she could be forcefully inher-
ited against her will.
Forced Child
Marriage
All child marriages including
abduction for purposes of mar-
riage are invariably forced and
violate the right of a girl to
choose her spouse.
The prevalence of child mar-
riage in all of Africa is dif-
ficult to determine. In some
selected countries such as
Mali, Mozambique, Niger and
Chad the prevalence of child
marriage is between 70 and 80
percent
In some African communities
girls are betrothed in infancy
and married as early as 7 years.
Young adolescents are abduct-
ed and forcibly married while
others have their marriages
arranged by their fathers and
given to much older men. In
Ethiopia in a study conducted
among 227 wives, 60% said
they were abducted before 15
and 93% before age 20. (UN
OCHA/IRIN Publication 2005
page 64.)
Poverty and ignorance seem to
be the main reasons for child
marriage where parents desire
material gain in form of bride
price. Other motives include
controlling a girl’s sexuality,
curbing promiscuity and out-
of -wedlock pregnancy. Child
marriage and abduction are
forms of gender-based violence
with multiple consequences.
Pregnancy, childbirth and child-
care are risks and burdens for
any married under-aged girl.
Fistula is closely linked with
obstructed labour during child
bearing among girls between 10
and 15 years of age. In Ethiopia
where child marriage is preva-
lent, doctors at the Fistula hos-
pital in Addis Ababa operate
on approximately 1,200 girls a
year.
Unfortunately legislative provi-
sions in some countries such as
Algeria, Chad, Libya, allows
a rapist to be pardoned if he
marries his victim even if the
victim is a minor. Abduction
of minors where men consum-
mate the marriage with rape
is permitted in some rural set-
tings in Ethiopia irrespective of
the legal provisions outlawing
abduction.
Female Genital
Mutilation
Female Genital Mutilation
(FGM) encompasses “all pro-
cedures involving partial or
total removal of the external
female genitalia or other injury
to the female genital organs
whether for cultural or other
non-therapeutic reasons.”
According to UNICEF estimate,
about 140 million women and
girls have undergone FGM world-
wide, and a further 2 million girls
are at risk of undergoing the pro-
cedure every year. Whatever the
type of FGM practiced, the sus-
taining factor is gender inequal-
ity, a desire by society to sub-
jugate women and control their
sexuality in the name of desirable
tradition. A female circumciser in
Kenya sums up the main reason
behind FGM thus: -
“When you cut a girl, you know
she will remain pure until she
gets married, and that after
marriage, she will be faithful....
But when you leave a girl uncut,
she sleeps with any man in the
community”. All other reasons
advanced for FGM including
mysticism, spirituality and
linking it with Islam are addi-
tional reinforcement to sustain
the practice and be acceptable
to prospective suitors.
Legal provisions have not
proved to be sufficient deter-
rents. Therefore, considerable
attention should be given to
raising awareness among girls,
families, and communities
Governments should prioritise
compulsory girl-child education
against violent and humiliat-
ing practices. Men would need
periodic training and refresher
courses on gender and power
relations.
“Putting an end to gender-
based violence will bring us
that much closer to a stage
of human social development
in which the rights, respon-
sibilities and opportunities of
individuals will not be deter-
mined by the fact of being
born male or female. The goal
is to create a world where all
people regardless of gender are
free to achieve their full poten-
tial” (Broken bodies, broken
dreams, UN OCHA/IRIN pub-
lication 2005).

RACISM AND SEXISM

An assault on the dignity of all our people
T he acts of abuse and
humiliation committed
last year by students from
the University of the Free
State, which were captured
on a video leaked last week
to the media, are an assault
on the human dignity of all
South Africans.
These acts are a stark
reminder of the many ways
in which the basic rights of
our people have been violat-
ed over centuries, and how
the attitudes that fed suchvi-
olations still stubbornly per-
sist in a democratic South
Africa.
The incident shown in the
video, which shocked the
nation and received interna-
tionalattention, reveals how
historical power relations
between people of differ-
ent race,gender, class and
age continue. By choosing
to abuse black women work-
ers, the perpetrators drew
attention, probably unknow-
ingly, to the triple oppres-
sion that a large proportion
of our society confront.
As women, as workers, and
as black people, this section
of society remains particu-
larly vulnerable, not just to
the outrageous abuse seen in
graphic detail over the past
week, but to daily exploita-
tion and suffering. They are
the section of society most
likely to be living in pov-
erty, to be unemployed, to
be caring for children and
elderly family members, and
most exposed to violence
and abuse.
The struggle against this tri-
ple oppression is not merely
a struggle against the kind of
hateful barbarism shown by
four young men in the Free
State, but a struggle against
the social, cultural, political
and economic chains that
bind black women workers.
It poses a challenge to deep-
en efforts to remove all of
these chains.
It also requires a concerted
assault on the patriarchal
relations that permeate all
facets of social interaction,
whether in the home, in the
workplace, in schools, in
political organisations, in
the media, or in the count-
less other places where
women are discriminated
against and oppressed.
The depth of sexist attitudes
in our society was evident
in another recent incident,
this time in Johannesburg,
where a young woman was
harassed and abused by taxi
drivers because of the clothes
she was wearing. It shares in
common with the Free State
incident the actions of a few
South Africans that infringe
on the rights of other South
Africans on the basis of atti-
tudes that should have no
place in a democratic soci-
ety, particularly in a coun-
try that has fought so hard
against racism and sexism,
and for which so many peo-
ple have sacrificed.
The sense of general out-
rage that these incidents
provoked among ordinary
South Africans, both black
and white, does however
point to the progress made
in developing respect for
human rights and a rejection
of overt racism and sexism.
It shows a society that has
travelled some way along
the road towards a non-racial
and non-sexist future - a
society which, although still
faced with the legacy and
reality of racism and sexism,
is nevertheless struggling to
overcome its past.
Such incidents do not signal
a return to the trenches of
racial animosity.
Nor should they be quickly
buried to ensure a semblance
of normality. They should
be used as an opportunity
for reflection and debate.
Society should be able to
discuss such incidents open-
ly and frankly, better to
understand the many ways
that racism, sexism and class
oppression (and ageism) still
affect our people. And then
to discuss how all South
Africans, working together,
can overcome these rem-
nants of our divided and
brutal past.

SALADIN – THE TRAVELLING THROUGH SPACE EVERYDAY
GREATEST WARRIOR I
G entle hearted Saladin
Ayyubi became one of the
world’s greatest warriors by
defeating crusaders and captur-
ing the holy city of Jerusalem.
Born in Tikrit, Iraq, Saladin,
his Arabic name is Salah al-Din
Yusuf ibn Ayyub. At the age of
14 he joined other members of
his family (the Ayyubids) in the
service of the Syrian ruler Nur
ad-Din. . He was brought up
by his noble father and talent-
ed uncle, Asad-ud-din Shirkhu.
Saladin was a very intelligent
and noble person. He loved
peace and never enjoyed fight-
ing battles but he and his uncle
were ordered to travel and fight
in three expeditions. And when
the young boy who didn’t like
fighting in battles fought, he
fought with great bravery and
strength.
Between 1164 and 1169 he dis-
tinguished himself in the three
expeditions sent by Nur ad-Din
to aid the decadent Fatimid rul-
ers of Egypt against attacks by
the Christian Crusaders based
in Palestine. In 1169 he was
made commander in chief of the
Syrian army and vizier of Egypt.
Having revitalized Egypt’s
economy and reorganized its
land and naval forces, Saladin
repelled the Crusaders and took
the offensive against them.
After Nur ad-Din’s death in
1174, Saladin became head
of state, Saladin expanded his
power in Syria and northern
Mesopotamia.Following the
submission of Damascus (1174),
Halab (Aleppo) (1183), and
Mosul (1186), numerous Muslim
armies, allied under Saladin’s
command were looking immor-
tal, The Crusaders were not
happy by Saladin’s increasing
power and success. Uniting their
forces, they planned a decisive
attack on Muslim area. Battle of
Hittin took place. Muslims won
under the leadership of Saladin.
Thousands of Crusaders were
arrested. Saladin treated the
prisoners with tolerance.
In 1187 CE, Saladin con-
quered Jerusalem. Thousands

of Crusaders were arrested.
However, when their moth-
ers, sisters, and wives appealed
to Saladin, he released them.
Many crusaders were ransomed.
However, he paid for many of
them. In addition, he provided
them transport, etc. He allowed
neither massacre nor looting.
He gave free pardon to all citi-
zens. He even arranged for their
traveling. He granted freedom
to Christians to leave the city
if they paid a small tribute.
Saladin paid it, himself, for
about ten thousand poor people.
His brother paid it for seven
thousand people. Saladin also
allocated one of the gates of the
city for people who were too
poor to pay anything that they
leave from there.
On Friday 27th Rajab 583 AH,
Saladin entered Jerusalem.
After entering the city they
went straight to the Mosque
and cleaned it. Then for the first
time in more then 80 years, the
people of Jerusalem heard the
Azan (call of prayer) from Al
Aqsa Mosque.
In 1189 the nations of west-
ern Europe launched the Third
Crusade to win back the holy
city. But they failed. On
March 4, 1193, Saladin died in
Damascus. He died with no pos-
session of Gold coins, Palaces,
Slaves, but The Holy Land Of
Jerusalem.
He is remembered by Muslims
as well as Non-Muslims as a
kind hearted un-selfish Warrior.
He was a religious person and
followed the teachings of Quran
(Book of God) and Prophet
Muhammad’s teachings regard-
ing War, he treated all of his
Prisoners with Respect and
dignity, no torture, massacre,
mass killing, took place during
his time. And unlike all other
Sultan’s he did not build a sin-
gle Palace or any building for
himself yet he erected mosques,
palaces, hospitals, and universi-
ties in for his Muslim brothers
in Cairo. This is why he is a
favourite topic to write on by
even Westerners.

was introduced to Khalid Manjoo
(KM) while reporting on the MSA-
Revival of the Spirit conference in
August and was intrigued by his
career choice as a satellite engineer.
Besides, him been the first satellite
engineer I’ve met, he is also an ener-
getic, dynamic and goal-orientated
individual with an infectious sense of
humor, definetly not the nerdy type
usually associated with inventors. So,
my first question posed to Khalid was
to enlighten our readers on the back-
ground of Space and Space Sciences.
KM - For centuries man has been fas-
cinated with space, the stars and plan-
ets, their positions, patterns and influ-
ence on our lives here on Earth. The
ability to look into the deep recesses
of our universe and also to look down
on Earth holds great value to us, help-
ing us better understand our world,
where we fit into the greater scheme
of things and where we are heading.
Satellite Engineering is but one facet
of the vast arena of space sciences and
involves the building and use of satel-
lites and satellite imagery to monitor
natural resources and evaluate demo-
graphic effects such as urban expan-
sion, pollution, deforestation and so
on. These satellites are often placed
high in the earth’s atmosphere, any-
where between 500kms (Low earth
orbit) to 30 000kms (Geostationary
Orbit) and can also be used for mili-
tary, telecommunications and GPS
purposes as well.
SP- Has your fascination with space
encouraged you to study satellite
engineering ?
KM - In all honesty, 2 years ago I was
oblivious to the existence of such a
field and career path in South Africa.
Close to completion of my degree,
around about the time when new-
bie graduates begin stressing about
jobs (aside from the 3 m’s : money,
motorcar and marriage), I happen to
come across the advert for a training
programme in satellite engineering
at a company called SunSpace in
Stellenbosch. The description of the
programme sounded so cool, I imme-
diately forwarded my CV. I was so
fascinated with the opportunity to be
part of something revolutionary and
‘against the grain’ of career choices
that I even called SunSpace to make
sure they received my application.
Alhamdulillah, 2 years and a couple
of months to the date, here I am.

SP- Towards which degree were you
studying ?
KM- I enrolled at university for a 4
year degree in electrical and electronic
engineering. Typical 1st year subjects
included mathematics, physics and
computer sciences, follow-ons and
build-up courses from matric (if stu-
dents saw them this way, they might
begin to enjoy it). As you progress
in your degree, you begin to take on
courses in electronic design, telecom-
munications, digital signal process-
ing, embedded systems and so on …
your choices are diverse and it’s up
to you to choose something you have
grown to enjoy. I personally chose the
above mentioned courses because of
my interest in them as well as their
relevance to the nature of the contem-
porary electronic world.

SP - What is a typical day in the life
of a satellite engineer?
KM - lots of free time to Google and
email friends (laughs) … everyday
is a new experience. Most of the
time you will find yourself either
at your PC programming or writing
documentation, but often you will
find yourself surrounded by electronic
equipment testing the cool stuff that
you have built. The testing takes place
in a cleanroom environment (much
like an operating theatre with your
design as the patient and you the doc-
tor) … you also get to dress-up just
like a surgeon with the blue overalls,
the gloves, head-cap and face-mask.
My particular role at SunSpace is
part of the Assembly, Integration and
Testing (AIT) Team. We are referred
to as ‘jacks of all trades, masters of
none’ simply because we need to
have an understanding of all aspects
of the satellite since we piece the
puzzle together and build-up the final
satellite system. The AIT team is
involved at all levels of the satel-
lite lifespan from first integration

right up until launch preparations and
actual commissioning and control of
the satellite once in orbit.
SP - What do you love most about
your job?
KM - Hmm, Amidst the wonderful
balance between an interesting line of
work and the monetary factor, I guess
it would have to be the opportunity
of being part of something beneficial
and knowing you can make a differ-
ence and improve the quality of life
through your work. There is nothing
more rewarding than being able to
work towards a better future for man-
kind and developing technology that
can help us achieve this vision. Also,
there is seldom a day when you
don’t learn anything new or interest-
ing. One cannot pursue a career in
satellite engineering without being
influenced and affected in some way
by the nature of space and many a
times being humbled by the marvel
and beauty of it thereof. I love what
I do not only because it is my forte,
but also because it gives me an
opportunity to recognize Allah and
His grandeurs in the kaleidoscope of
His creation within and beyond our
known world.
SP - Some advice to young learn-
ers embarking on choosing their
KM - Life is all about balance, weigh
the good against the bad, recog-
nize your talents and then select
your desired careers. You are the
raw materials from which forth great
scholars, engineers, doctors and law-
yers will be produced. You consti-
tute the edifice of a great nation to
come and any great nation is highly
dependant upon its moral upbringing
and education. Define your goals
and know what you want in life ..
then have the courage to follow your
dreams and make them a reality.
SP - And, finally tell us a little
about yourself ?
KM – Well, I’m 24 years of age and a
satellite engineer. I am also the direc-
tor of Jakhil Visionary Productions
and its sister company One4Kids
South Africa, as well as a trustee
of the MSA of the Cape. If I had to
describe myself in a nutshell, I would
say that I am all about balance; a
sound mind and character matched
by good looks (Alhamdulillah). My
hobbies include reading, internet,
radio, sports, and I love food (invent-

TRIBUTE TO ISMAIL COLLIER – PEACE AND HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST

sadly bade farewell to one of
the most remarkable and generous
human rights activist of our time.
Ismail Collier was always in the
forefront fighting to uphold the
human dignity of the oppressed.

Tribute to Ismail Collier
I met the late Ismail (ragam) in
the late 1970s while I was a high
school student.
At the time, as students, we were
actively involved in student and
worker organisation. We had set up
SRCs and inter-school committees
to take up the fight against apart-
heid and were meeting with the
democratic trade unions to support
their struggles.
Ismail had just been appoint-
ed physical education teacher at
Heathfield High. Within days of
joining the staff, he made his sup-
port for the growing student organi-
sation known. I was chairperson
of the SRC at school and Ismail
came to introduce himself to me.
He spoke about his beliefs in a
quiet, understated way and offered
to help us in any way that we felt
was necessary. And so a relation-
ship was born.
Over the next few months I got to
know and respect this new teacher,
someone who helped our group of
young high school students with
transport, with kind words when
we faced difficult moments and
with access to the school’s printing
machines. He gave of his time and
resources without hesitation and
allowed the group of young people
to develop their ideas on their own.
Ismail was very practical and while
he was passionate about his politics,
he looked for ways in which his
politics could manifest itself in his
daily work. Our physical education
lessons also became a time when
we would talk about organising
students. He was a popular teacher
and used the respect that students
had for him to support the message
of the student activists. I remember
the meetings we held, on the soc-
cer-field with a group of students in
shorts and t-shirts, to discuss ways
to raise money and collect food for
the striking workers at Fatti’s and
Moni’s and Ismail (ragam) trans-
porting the food with his car.
Ismail and Derrick Naidoo, who
taught at Harold Cressy at the
time, started an interschool volley-
ball tournament, got me involved
in the team and rapidly turned
the volleyball tournaments into a
further point of organising and a
meeting point for activists.
I remember the passion and seri-
ousness with which Ismail (ragam)
held his views, an anger against
injustice that you could see in his
body, in the intensity of his voice,
his movements, when he spoke.
My memories of him is of a teacher
with commitment, courage, a hum-
ble and strong person. In the years
that passed, he continued to show
that commitment to his students
and his beliefs. We saw each other
occasionally in later years, at the
home of our mutual friend Hamied
Mahate, and I found that time had
not dimmed Ismail’s commitment
or the strength of his beliefs. We
were all enriched by the time we
spent with Ismail, and we have
beautiful memories of an activist,
a teacher and a humble man who
gave much, quietly.

Brother Ismail Collier was a man
energized and driven by his con-
cern for the oppressed people of
Palestine. When I had the priviledge
to chat with him inevitably we would
be discussing a conference or protest
march, anything to create awareness
around the plight of the people of
Palestine. Brother Ismail was a man
who lived by the beautiful hadith
which says that the person who is
not concerned about the condition of
another is not a Muslim.
His sincerity and his humility was
something which I value. During a
visit to him just prior to the arrival
of Shaykh Raed Salah, he asked
me if I could arrange a favour for
him, he wanted to greet the Shaykh
and send his salaams to the peo-
ple of Palestine. Alhamdulillah the
Shaykh made the visit and that was
perhaps his last contact with the
people of Palestine. Sometimes I
wonder about the fact that a man of
Shaykh Raed calibre and status was
here in Cape Town just before his
demise and that he was honoured
with this visit. There is indeed
a great message in this. Allahu a
lam.
Brother Ismail was a man who
many could not keep up with,
his energy surpassed men much
younger than him. He was driven
by his heart and his intense love for
the oppressed. I remember many
years ago - he organized the first
Islamic Winter University in SA.
We pray that he be granted a high
place in jannah alongside the mar-
tyrs that died for the liberation of
Palestine, Ameen.

For the past 25 years that I had
known Ismail, what stood out was
his commitment and consistent
effort in the cause for justice and
for the rights of the oppressed.
To use an athletics analogy – after
all, Ismail was a super athlete
and sports coach – he was like
the pace-setter in a middle dis-
tance race, but with a difference.
He didn’t drop out or slacken his
pace. He raced to the finishing
line, and along the way everyone
else had to keep up with his pace
and endurance. This is how Ismail
handled all the projects that he was
involved.
Just ten days before he passed
away, Ismail phoned me – his
voice brimming with excitement
– to inform me about the guests
for the 60th commemoration of the
Nakba, which he was spearheading
as co-ordinator of the Friends of
Al-Aqsa organisation.
Most people know of Ismail as a
passionate activist for the cause
of the Palestinians. But through-
out his campaigns for the cause
of Palestine, he was focussed on
the global nature of oppression,
and therefore believed in a global
response in fighting for justice. So,
he very consciously connected the
struggle of a Palestinian school-
child in a refugee camp in Rafah
– for example – to the struggle of a
school-child in Bonteheuwel. Ismail
made people aware of the fact that
both these schoolchildren face the
same challenges of malnutrition,
lack of resources and violence.
Ismail also displayed those fine touch-
es of a caring, compassionate human
being, who didn’t forget the little ges-
tures that lifted people’s spirits.

Dear Mr President
We are concerned citizens who fear that
there is a cartel controlling and monopolis-
ing the Muslim pilgrimage travel industry.
South Africa is one of the most expensive
countries in the world, when it comes to
our South African Muslims wishing to
perform the Pilgrimage as we are obli-
gated to by the Religion of Islam.
We know this when we meet with our
brothers and sisters from the various
countries. We discuss our travel packages
and we get very surprised and shocked to
learn that our packages are exorbitantly
expensive.
HAJJ is the FIFTH pillar of Islam and only
becomes obligatory once an adult has suffi-
cient funds to undertake the journey which
is once in a lifetime for many of us.
Many of our people yearn to undertake
this pilgrimage because of it being the
last obligation to complete our faith, as
well as to go and visit the two most holi-
est cities of Islam, i.e. Makka and Medina.
Hence our travel agents have no mercy
and charge exorbitant fares because they
know that, out of our love for our faith ,
we would pay any price for this once in a
life time opportunity.
All we are asking you MR. PRESIDENT
is to look into this monopoly and bring the
“oppressors” to book. Regulate pilgrim-
age prices for the benefit of our people
(like you have done with the pharmacy
industry).
Have your team investigate this and also
do comparative country pricings and
expose these exploiters, because if any-
thing, we know and as citizens our coun-
try( from our history) , we would not
tolerate oppression and exploitation from
anyone - anytime!!

Dear Mr President
I read your state of the nation address
with much skepticism because its been 14
years into our democracy and still things
do not seem to be improving much. These
plans are all good on paper but in reality
will they be effective?
The crime in this country especially has
recently spun out of control and has
made South African citizens like myself,
extremely paranoid. What the criminals
need is harsher punishments. I mean real-
ly, we pay the taxes that keep the murder-
ers and rapists alive. The very same crimi-
nals who destroy the lives of our children
and our families! The crime is chasing all
our skilled workers away and pretty soon
we will be sitting with no one!
As for the youth, mere words are not
going to change the situation with our
youth. We need to start looking at our-
selves instead of asking why the youth act
the way they do. It is common knowledge
that youth follow the example of their
leaders, seniors etc. So how can we expect
our youth to be model citizens when their
leaders are exposed for corruption, fraud,
bribery and sex scandals?
The government aims to lower the amount
of hiv/aids victims, yet they promote pro-
miscuity by making condoms available for
children. Teenagers as young as 12 years
old can go for abortion without the knowl-
edge or consent of parents. Does this not
go against moral reformation? Somewhere,
somehow we are failing the youth and it is
time to stop the talk and start acting!

I think the State of the Nation Address
seems very unpromising this year. As
always the government makes extravagant
empty promises. Never mind the political
corruption in the government. And the
policemen that are convicted of crimes
reinstated in the police force due to “staff
shortages”. My suggestion to you is pay
our police service, medical personnel and
teachers a decent salary, so they don’t
have to free-lance in criminal activities
and flee SA. The Power saga of Eskom
sends a tarnish image of SA to the rest of
the world. All good and find for the 2010
World Cup, but where is all the capital
monies coming from – hope its not from
Eskom. Let’s not start on the economy,
what’s with our high cost of living – we
average, hard working citizens are strug-
gling to survive and pay for all govern-
ment corruption and stupidity. Looks like
SA is trying to mirror Zimbabwe.
