Professional Development October 21, 2013 TESS: need 8 hours by spring break; 24 hours total by end of school year.

The two day in 2012 accounts for 12 hours, Dr. Skelton3 hours in August. Today is one hour. Total: 16 Login to IDEAS, as a group or individually. Domain 2: Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport The Classroom Environment Meets, proficient are the outcomes of evaluation. No one will be exemplary for very long in any area. Stressed that proficient is an excellenta very high bar. 2a Classroom Environment How do you create this environment? Respect them Be fair Get to know them Involved in activities specific to them. If you were watching an excellent teacher, what would you see or hear? Taking adv of teachable moments Enthusiastic Calling by name Make them feel comfortable Convey that you care Are students mutually supportive of one another? Model and teach students how to be respectful Warmth and caring Politeness and dignity Encouragement Active listening Fairness Greets by name Respects cultural differences

Evaluators look for attributes of a proficient teacher. Three or more observed instances constitutes the mark. If three observation that fit in the the exemplary category that teacher is then evaluated as exemplary for that attribute. Level 4 Teacher demonstrates knowledge and caring about individual students lives beyond school. When necessary, students correct one another in their conduct toward classmates. The teachers response to a students incorrect response respects the students dignity. Live in 3vacation in 4. Three is rock solid teaching.

2b Establishing a Culture for Learning


What is evidence of a culture of learning? Researching on their phones? High cognitive energy? This is about what they are actually doing High expectations for all students? Both teacher and students value the hard work. Do we convey the relevance and importance of what they are learning? Create circumstances wherein students can experience success. We focus on the successful and not the lower levels. How do we make sure that all are included in learning and in learning success? Teachers make it happen.

Part Two Project Based Learning The goal is retention. Academic rigor? Students actually doing instead of listening. Challenging and accessible. Making connections in data to concepts. Ability to analyze that data with valid conclusions is a goal of lab science. Driving question should provide a need to know context. Project has to be authenticmust relate to their lives. Use the internet to gain insights and get ideas. Business world, hospitals, other teachers, students. active exploration. Students need to engage in active exploration. Knows? Needs to know? When students come to you with valid questions about what they dont know, youll know that they are in pursuit of learning. Project gives them a framework and a reason for learning. A good driving question? Provocative? Does it promote or instill a need to know? Relevance? How do we? Shock and awe. Has to go to the heart of the content. Must come from real world dilemas. Was Trumanns decision to drop the bomb justified? How have robotics and automation changed our society? Will the advances in robotics effect your ability to get a good job. What is global warming? What do you do to cause it? How will this effect your childrens future? How will it effect New Orleans? Florida? How has reading changed for teenagers over the past 30 years? How has technology effected reading by teenagers over the last 30 years?

Students get more engaged when: They have choices and, can choose their forum of delivery. Making presentations to people off campus. Outside people come into class.. By making a product that can be utilized by others it becomes more engaging. What are we looking for? In the springdo two more projects. Planning for the year is hard at this point. One per quarter is his preference. Suggestions: Do the critical friends protocol. At close of project, make reflection notes. Have someone come in and watch what is going on in the midst of the project. Mr. Clark was very affirmative today and invited us to come see him and seek his guidance.
