Lesson Title Interpreting Unit Rates to Solve Problems Lesson Overview This online-enabled lesson is created for students

who have been working with ratios and rates and could use another method for solving rate problems. It focuses on the important vocabulary that students need to be able to precisely design and understand problems and give plenty of opportunities for students to practice their skills. Subject Area / Topic / Grade Level Math Ratio and Proportional Relationships 7th Grade Standards Common Core Math 7.RP.1: Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including
ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units.

Common Core Math 7.RP.2b: Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs,
equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships. Common Core Math Practice #1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Common Core Math Practice #6 Attend to Precision

Duration One 90 minute class period or two 45 minute periods. Lesson Objectives1 Students use precise vocabulary when discussing ratios, rates, and proportionality. Students find and interpret the constant of proportionality (unit rate) within the contexts of problems.

Guiding Questions3 Conceptual: Factual: Procedure Opening Activity (20 minutes): Calculating the total cost of a slice of cake (Pairs or groups of three). On the board, put the prices for a box of cake mix ($3.48) and a dozen eggs ($1.44). The cake mix calls for two eggs. If the whole cake were cut into six pieces, how much did the ingredients that went into each cake cost? If I sold all of the slices for $3 apiece, how much money would I make total? The first thing that groups should begin to notice is that it is not necessary to include the total cost of the dozen eggs, they just need the cost of the two eggs. Hopefully students divide the cost of the dozen by 12 to find the unit price of $0.12 and multiply that by two. This shows an understanding of the unit price, even if students are not aware of the terminology they used. The opening activity should end with a whole class discussion led by the instructor. Record student responses and expect students to explain their work and defend their answers. Group activity: Close reading (20 minutes): Students should navigate to the cK-12 flexbook chapter and, in their small groups, carefully read the examples and work out the problems together. Group questions could be shared with the class by writing them on the board. Students may watch the video as part of the lesson to provide further assistance. After reading the chapter and working through the guided problems, students should begin work on the practice problems. (*Note: this portion of the assignment can be assigned for at home preparation in a blended learning course) Individual Activity (5 minutes): cK-12 Exercises. Students should individually practice their work in the cK-12 exercises for this chapter (log in may be required). Students should self-assess their abilities up to this point and determine if they are understanding the purpose of the Unit Rate. Class Activity (20 minutes): Vocabulary building. Students navigate to Ratios and Proportional Relationships page on Quizlet. Students should spend some time learning the new vocabulary associated with the lesson by using the audio enabled flash cards, working through the learn and speller activities, and taking a practice test or two. After students are comfortable with the basics, they may play with the Scatter and Race activities to compete for the best score.

Why is the unit ratio equivalent to the constant of proportionality? Why can the constant of proportionality be expressed in two ways?

How is the constant of proportionality calculated? What are the different ways the constant of proportionality is represented?

Individual Activity (15 minutes): Khan Academy Practice Rate Problems 1. Students are expected to be able to answer five problems in a row to demonstrate mastery of the concepts. Students may use videos for support and may drop down to Rate Problems 0.5 to reinforce ideas if necessary. Closing Activity (10 minutes): Spaghetti Dinner. A package of spaghetti costs $1.25 and makes four servings. A can of spaghetti sauce costs $2.45 and also makes four servings. What is the cost per serving for the Exit Ticket (5 minutes): Vocabulary quiz & Check list. Students should take a vocabulary quiz created by the instructor (see below) and use the given check list to track their accomplishments. Assessment(s): Check-list of accomplishments Vocabulary Quiz Accommodations, Modifications, and Differentiations: English Language learners the Chrome browser can be set to numerous different languages to meet the needs of learners. Additionally, cK-12, Quizlet, and Khan Academy are all available in multiple different languages, Khan Academy has recently redeployed their website in Spanish to reach more learners. Lower achieving students When students are struggling, the instructor can work with them to meet specific goals. Three problems in a row on the Khan Academy practice, or moving down to Rate Problems 0.5 could really benefit many lower achieving students. Remind struggling students of the video lessons that could really help them understand the content. Higher achieving students The Khan Academy website has multiple other resources that could be used to challenge students; Rate Problems 2 is a good challenge for students in 7th grade. Other activities that students could do is promote them to editors for the Quizlet vocabulary words and task them with finding and identifying other important terminology that the class needs to work on.
