Eliza seems desperate to leave the house but also worried about leaving it. Why? A.1. Eliza seemed desperate as she wanted to save her son from being enslaved. She was ready to go to any length to preserve the freedom of her child. She tried to escape with him the night before he was to be taken away from her. She was worried because she was leaving the only home which she had ever known. She had to part with every familiar object; like the place where she had grown up, the trees under which she had played and the grooves where she had walked many an evening in her happier days by the side of her young husband. Her worries were that she had to go to a totally unknown environment. Q.2. Describe Elizas different state of mind A.2. She was disappointed and dismayed because she received the information that there was no ferry or boat to take her across the river and therefore she may not be able to save her son from slavery. The desperation created by the arrival of her pursuers prompted Eliza to pick up her son and rush towards the frozen river. She desperately leaped in madness. The sheet of on which she alighted cracked and creaked as her weight came on it. She didnt stand on that for a moment also. With desperate energy she leaped from one cake of ice to another one. She tumbled, leaped, slipped

SECTION 2 PRINCESS SEPTEMBER Q.1.When did Princess September stop crying? A.1. Princess September was lying in her bed and crying as the parrot which was gifted to her by her father had died. At that time, she saw a little bird which hopped into her room. Then it began to sing a beautiful song about a lake in the Kings garden. It sang about the willow trees that looked at themselves in the still water and the gold fish that glided in and out of the branches that were reflected in the water. When Princess September saw the bird flying in the cage almost lifeless, she could not bear it. She opened the door, put her hand in and lifted the bird out. She gave a sob of relief for she felt that his little heart was beating still. When the bird opened its eyes, the Princess gave him a great sob. She decided to give him freedom. She opened the window and gently placed it in the still so that it can fly away. In this way the bird got its freedom. The problems that King Cecilia faced when she did not know to read or write are as follows. 1. Life was terrifying for her because there was so much writing everywhere and she did not know what that conveyed. 2. It was a life of dependency for her because she had to depend on her children in order to know what any piece of writing contained. 3. She could not sign her name and therefore she had to put her thumb impression in its place.

4. She was underpaid and cheated and people took advantage of the fact that she could not read. 5. She had to often blush with embarrassment because of her inability to read and write.
